Nintendo has confirmed an upcoming spot of network maintenance which could have a minor impact on Switch's online services.
On Monday 20th April from 6pm - 8pm PT (that's 3am - 5am the following morning CEST), maintenance is planned for the "distribution of update data". What that means exactly is unclear, although Nintendo notes that "during the maintenance window, network services may be unavailable".
We should point out that this doesn't necessarily mean we'll see the next major system firmware update or anything similarly exciting appear once the maintenance is over. Still, it's worth keeping the date in mind and planning any online gameplay or eShop browsing around those times.
The last firmware update to arrive came at the beginning of last month, taking the system to Version 9.2.0. The changes? Lots of lovely stability.

I just want folders and themes...
My guess is stability
At this point no folders and themes is becoming almost offensive. Get it done Nintendo - your public is getting sick of asking for the basics.
@T7Hokage017 It's been 3 years, probably time to let go of them
Just FOLDERS, please..just folders..
I'll pass on pointless folders. If it's just a stability update that's fine.
I saw the picture for the article and got a little sad. I wish Nintendo would remember Mario maker 2’s existence and bring more themes (remember everyone saying since themes were plural they were going to come out with more).
I don't want themes, those WILL slow down the system.
I'm okay with folders, though.
@Corum Nintendo never said that.
Come on Nintendo ! Folders and themes ! What exactly is complicated, here ?
@sanderev they sure didn’t did they.
@Corum they didn’t said themes were coming, but it is kinda sad that MM2 didn’t have the same kind of support and updates as splatoon or smash. Kind of a missed opportunity imo.
@Crockin I agree completely.
Any chance of more SNES games added?
This happened in January. It was because of an issue where you couldn't download the latest update data at the tine(I think update 9.1.0. This isn't because of update 10.0.
@Corum I think it’s just shy of being the best 2d Mario game. I got some good miles out of it, but there’s just zero motivation to play levels or build beyond the novelty of that. It could be so much bigger and better
Nintendo, please, folders.
@Crockin I jump on from time to time still to move through the normal level infinite run (in the 8000s ranking now) and check if there’s a new speed run (which was a brilliant addition) but that’s about it. I’m still hopeful that Nintendo will release at least one more additional theme.
Folders and themes - big NO - they will drastically slow the system home menu, so N will never do that, but some new background colors would be nice.
Considering how far in to the Switchs lifespan it was when they brought in new UI developers etc it would make sense that it would be around now we would see some sort of major update. I still think it will be later in the year though.
@Corum I think Nintendo have another theme or two ready to go but are saving it either for a quiet time when they need to fill a release gap or will release it to mark the one year anniversary.
I heard from my dad's boss who's aunties stepsister works for Nintendo that it's an update to install Playstation Now
@premko1 absolutely! I still remember when the 3DS got the folders update and the menu became literally impossible to use, like 1 or 2fps.
@bluemage1989 I could definitely see that as a possibility. Got my fingers crossed for a NA Mario bro’s 2 theme, love that game.
Moar avatars!!1
I still don’t know why avatars are a part of a system-update...
@sanderev @premko1 A simple background image will NOT slow the UI down! Nor will folders.
@Corum a good choice.
@vio a simple background image is called a wallpaper, not a theme.
But overall, it seems like many people forgot to account for Nintendo's lack of motivation as opposed/added to lack of ability yet again. 3DS came with folders and themes and blackjack and selfies because it was partly designed in response to the growing competition from smartphones, and Wii U partly inherited this philosophy due to being an effective dual screen family member itself (the commercials even highlighted the GamePad's media interactions). Now they have a console that prints money without this stuff, so at best they might be leaving it as a carrot for Switch's twilight years... if intending to ever go there at all.
I'm not asking for much in a theme update. Just let me change to colors other than black and white. I promise you that changing the hex code for the colors displayed won't slow things down a bit.
there's so much about the Nintendo Switch OS that could be fixed with QoL updates but it's almost guaranteed that Nintendo hasn't cared about that because that stuff won't sell more Switches and Nintendo is all about making their money lol
folders confirmed.
I’ll try and keep my expectations in check. An update would be nice though and is long overdue!
I secretly wish they reopen the Streetpass again. Man, I miss it so much!
I gave up hoping for folder and themes. Wish they give us the freedom to be able to put our own wallpaper like PSvita ( knowing this will never happen, one can only wish )
@BenAV This!^ Not sure why all the fuss for folders most people barely have 10 games downloaded and others still buy the physical copies. I'd personally rather them focus on more useful or innovative things.
@abduz I have over 400 games on my Switch if you include physical and digital and folders would just make things messier. Sorting them alphabetically is the most logical and easy to navigate method of sorting a large quantity of games and they already added the option to have it do that automatically ages back.
@BenAV Yes i remember they did that but wowww 400 games?! I have around 30 games and that's more than what most people I know that have a Switch, own. I do agree, folders do look messier ..I dont have a single folder on my phone because of that and the less I need to click, the better
@abduz I do try to only buy games that I think I'll play but my collection has gotten a bit out of control at some point, haha. So many great games to choose from on the Switch, especially for someone like me who loves niche indie games, Japanese VNs, etc. I've been doing a pretty good job of getting through as many as I can.
Well, I'm sure it will be a good time for a nice smoke break and to get some munchies.
So. . . On 4/20 at 4:20, the servers will be down? And you act like this is just a coincidence?
@premko1 @sanderev A few jpegs/pngs in the background are not going to 'drastically slow the system home menu'. That's utter nonsense. It never slowed the New 3DS or the Vita and they are a far less powerful systems.
@abduz I must have over 100 digital titles without even trying – and I think you'd find very few people who have 10 or less. Even my Mum has over 30 and she only got her Switch Lite for Christmas.
Nintendo what are you waiting to do a update to Switch that add Folders ad Themes, my cousin have a lot of games and a Folder for his Switch and my Switch will be quite handy.
I guess everyone bought crappy switches. I've had mine since launch and have never had any issues. Personally, I believe the problem is that all you people are mindless idiots. You do things to your switch and then blame it on Nintendo because that's what you idiot people do. I don't expect your feeble minds to understand.
Themes would be cool
I personally want themes for the Home menu, but if they were just the basic colours that the 3DS provided, then I would be fine.
As far as folders go, I generally don't care too much. Considering the Switch's home menu already provides some form of file management, I've never really missed the Wii U/3DS folders too much.
Folders!! or I'm throwing my Switch into a fire.
@UnknownReader that's spotpass you're thinking of.
@Marka23 was it call spotpass? I thought it's streetpass, lol!
@UnknownReader streetpass is where two 3DS systems pass eachother and exchange info (Miis etc) Spotpass is the internet connection the 3DS uses when in sleep mode and connected to the internet. Certain WiFi hotspots allowed you to use Spotpass to get Miis and demos among other things. This feature has been shut down while streetpass is still active.
I don’t really care about folders but themes would be nice, and before people start with the “it will slow the system down stuff”, I’m just talking about additional solid colors for the background - red, blue, yellow, purple, etc. Maybe an option that could match each joycon color that’s available.
@Marka23 Yeah I know about the shutting down ,that is why I miss it so much.
Ah, so yeah it was streetpass I miss cos it's when I collect mii for the Mii Plaza. But also yes, I have to turn on spotpass.
@brunojenso I only own 2 games. Mario kart 8 and BoTW
@T7Hokage017 you don't get it do you..
this is a data update and most likely won't even have a system update, they will update the servers.
for you people that want themes, folders, browsers and such, either stop complaining (cus Nintendo is like apple and dosent care or listin to the community), if you really want those features, jailbreak your switch or just game on pc and run yuzu emulator.
@Advanced3 Sure, there are always exceptions – have you had your Switch long? I confess that I, like many here, got my Switch more than 3 years ago during the launch week - so games are gonna build - even though I'm far from wealthy.
And if you have had it more than 2 seconds, how have you not picked up something like Classic Doom/Doom 2 when they were about £2 recently? Even if those games are not your thing - you are on this website, so you are obviously more interested in building your games library than the average consumer.
There are amazing games at tiny prices all the time – and you already own 2 of the most expensive games on the system. I just picked up the amazing Broforce for about £2.50 for instance.
Wish Super Mario Maker 2 still got updates/dlc
@brunojenso Compare old 3DS from before the Themes update with after. The system takes LONGER to boot, and switching between menus. Also it's not just a single png/jpeg. It's also
1. Some means of downloading / installing the themes.
2. Extracting packages containing the files
3. Keeping theme files in system memory
4. Backgrounds, icons, borders, shaders, etc.
5. "I want music", music files.
6. Also these themes need to be added to the eShop slowing the eShop even more.
Also the Vita, 3DS are extremly slow systems to begin with.
And even the PS4 running with a theme is slower than the PS4 running on the default background.
I could see something like showing a (locally stored, or in the game "icon" file) screenshot of the highlighted game as an option though. Since that would only use already used memory. Same goes for folders.
@sanderev I think you're making way too much out of this. Your point 'Also the Vita, 3DS are extremely slow systems to begin with.' supports my point – that the Switch is so much faster than these machines so it not going to slow down for themes. For those interested in Hacked Switches (not me really) then very complex themes with music are already running perfectly.
The eShop slows down due to network issues (even if you yourself have a good connection) and the fact that Nintendo place things like the sales in one big stupid list instead of breaking it into sections such as by price or alphabetically.
I have never seen my Vita (owned both models) slow down in the themed menus at all - same for my New 3DS model. However I can well imagine the Old 3DS's did - as you have mentioned – but that proves nothing regarding the Switch.
Anyway I'm prepared for the possibility of themes and folders never coming - but there is no valid reason from a software or hardware pov, and it seems more likely that Nintendo simply can't be bothered whilst the Switch is selling so well.
@brunojenso The only reason the Switch is really fast is BECAUSE they made the OS very small. The OS fits basically in 200 KB of RAM. Adding more to it WILL 100% make it slower.
See: https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2018/08/the_switchs_home_menu_uses_less_than_200_kb_of_resources_for_super-fast_load_times
Also I said that the PS4, not a slow system compared to the Switch, is a lot slower than normal when using custom themes.
A full colour JPG at 720p can easily be around 400 kb, and 1080p even around 600kb.
And yes, I'm a software engineer / programmer. I know using more memory will slow down your application. Remember, the Switch does not have 16GB of memory. The Switch only has 4GB of RAM, and almost all of that is reserved for games.
Adding more memory to the OS is possible but that would require the system to unload / load some of the OS memory when going to /from the Home menu. Which means ADDED LOAD TIME.
@sanderev ok, best not have themes then. Thanks
It’s just a normal matinence every network will do that every so often.
I could really get my hopes up on some online stability... but I think it’d be more reasonable to hope for an integrated party system...! 😂
Just add custom background
On console party chat
And miiverse, so many question about games that would have been answered by the community over at miiverse and best way to meet new people to play online with as well.
Last time this maintenance happened, it was mainly for backend stuff, so don't give your hopes up
@BENDsli well....looks like I gotta get up to smoke now.
@Incarna A homebrew developer actually already made just that: https://github.com/tallbl0nde/NX-Activity-Log
The only problem is that Nintendo bans you for using it because you are not allowed to make your system better.
The maintenance is NOW. Can't download the system update...
Ban hammer time.
