I keep eyeing up that MD collection now that I've got an MD 6 button pad. Anyone got it? Good emulation?
Alien Isolation, here I come.
@WiltonRoots
Emulation is so so, the sound is especially off in some titles
But with 50 titles its stil worth buying.
@WiltonRoots I have the physical version of the MD collection. I've not noticed any issues, but having not owned a Mega Drive back in the day I'm not uber-sensitive in the way that someone who's played 50,000 hours of Sonic might be.
@WiltonRoots
You should avoid Mega Drive Classics, it's not worth it.
Every title is afflicted with bad input delay, which makes everything feel like you're playing on ice physics.

The SEGA AGES titles are good though, they are beautifully emulated and don't suffer horrendous input lag, and add all sorts of lovely new features.
The SEGA AGES versions of Sonic 1 and 2 feature the drop dash from Sonic Mania as a bonus.
Oooh Virtua Racing! Gettin that.
@RileyR ive got it and cant get in to it. Dunno why tho as its supposed to be one of the best. Must just be me i guess.
@WiltonRoots input lag is horrible, games like Shining Force it doesn't matter, Streets of Rage feels a bit heavy but Sonic is nearly unplayable for me. The majority of the games are pretty good to play though, just get the Sonic games elsewhere
@RileyR
Its a great port.
Definitely worth your money
Alien Isolation seems to be all that's interesting in this. Had my eye on that for a while. Hung on for this long, hoping for a physical copy, but doesn't look likely at this point so may jump on it
@Kidfunkadelic83
For me it's just a great unexpected port of a game i thought was consigned to the Megadrive and 32X ( The Saturn port is diabolical)
It's a bit lite on content but it is an arcade game so I can deal.
@carlos82
Personally I honestly never noticed any lag.
@WiltonRoots don’t do it! The input lag is terrible, I’m not even that sensitive to it normally but this is really bad, Sonic is borderline unplayable.
@KitsuneNight i may get back on it tonight and give it a bit of a bash. Nice break from FFIV remake.
Forgot all about Alien: Isolation. Was on my wish list while I waited for a sale so I guess I should probably pick it up now.
The rest of the games I couldn't care less about, except for the Valkyria Chronicles games which I already have.
@carlos82 This is how I feel aswell. The input lag is bad but they are fine to deal with for turn based games but still annoying that you overshot going into a doorway or passage and bump into a wall.
Anything with platforming is just a nogo for me as I too feel they are unplayable.
Onto the games. Nothing really interesting other then SHining Resonance but I rather get that on PC for the 60 fps combat.
@PlayedNSlayed it is really good and especially impressive on Switch. I also bought it in the sale.
@WiltonRoots terrible lag and the buttons won't be in the right place on the six button controller. I don't recommend getting it for ANY price.
Very very tempted by Alien Isolation, Valkyrie chronicles (both) and Virtua racing. I recently got Vampyr and it runs worse than a legless mule. Anyone know how Alien Isolation runs? Mainly docked at moment due to Lockdown.
@Kidfunkadelic83
Best way to play it really
In short bursts, it's an arcade game after all.
@FargusPelagius haven't played it personally but did watch the Digital Foundry analysis of it and it runs really well and in some ways it looks sharper than the PS4 version at the time the done it.
Alien isolation for me but it is not on sale in North America 😔
Cheers for the feedback gang!
On the other hand, if you want to play Landstalker, Beyond Oasis, Shining Force, Gunstar Heroes, Toejam & Earl etc then the Mega Drive Classics Collection works perfectly fine and it's your only option on Switch anyway, short of hacking the thing.
@N64-ROX I did like Landstalker...that was what drew me to it.
@WiltonRoots Landstalker was a fantastic surprise - a weird, Zelda wannabe that I never knew existed. It certainly gave the rewind and save state buttons a good workout though, I can't imagine how people back in the day must have completed it.
@WiltonRoots @KitsuneNight Some people try to "see" or "hear" input lag but it is really a question about how you "feel" a game in your hands. You might not see it but in the end, the whole experience is ruined because of the lack of responsiveness of the game. Even on a turn-based game like a tactical-RPG.
I became aware of input lag a few months after getting an 61ms input lag TV. It's enormous ! But it felt ok the day I tried it and bought it. A few months later, I realized my envy of playing videogames was fading like ice under the sun. It didn't felt fun anymore.
I suddenly had the idea to plug my PS4 into my desktop PC screen (which I don't use for gaming) and it felt absolutly responsiv ! It was FUN to play again.
A few weeks later, I bought a TV with 21ms input lag and it felt great again. One year after, I bought a PVM (professionnal CRT) for retrogaming, which has no input lag at all, and I realized how 21ms had in fact already an effect on the pleasure of playing.
Going by a friend house, I tried a 11ms TV on a combat game (MK11), and it felt awesome : I was litteraly feeling that I was giving punchs and kicks again, which I was not on the 21ms TV, where there was a very small delay that made a big difference in term of feeling.
So now, after this covid-19 storm, I will buy such a TV.
Input lag is really an invisible and silent plague that kills the pleasure of playing videogames. Even if you don't notice it.
@smashboy2000
I don't even see the difference between 30 and 60 fps though.
I may have adjusted to input lag or not
The only time when slowdown actually bothered me is when I played DOA 2 today on the Dreamcast and the game was visibly slowing down
I'm not sure if this is my tv, the boot disc im using ( its an import game ) or my dreamcast. ( all other games play fine )
Or me being used to the faster, later versions
But doa 2 plays in slomo.
@N64-ROX
Lots of walkthroughs and trial and error.
Dark Savior on the Saturn is a sort of "sequel"
@WiltonRoots
So what's the verdict ?
Are you gonna get it or nah ?
@smashboy2000 I don't disagree with you there. You're bringing back memories of my first HDMI setup getting even the audio and video slightly out of sync, that was enough to drive a man to despair. And a racing game with lag is a non starter. But sometimes close enough is good enough, especially when we're all playing on this little handheld console which is putting a fair effort into being a platform for everything under the sun.
@KitsuneNight I was exactly like you a few years ago : not feeling input lag and not seeing the difference between 30 and 60fps. The reason for me was chronical stress.
I started doing meditation every day since five years, which slows your brain every day a little more, and oh boy can I see the difference today o____O
It did increase my skills in video games too
@N64-ROX Totally agree with you. And that's why I'm gonna get a 11ms input lag TV : I don't feel today any input latency with that number.
By the way, the Switch in portable mode has an input lag I can't perceive. I don't know how much it is but it's far under 20ms.
It's one of the most responsiv way to play to modern games today.
@smashboy2000
Can't say I feel stressed though
But I do most of my gaming on the PC or NX.
@KitsuneNight It can come from many factors, I'm not a doctor.
But you have to know what stress is because I didn't really (I thougt I did). If it can help...
Stress = thinking of something that already happened or something that has not happened yet.
No stress = feeling the moment right now.
I always go back to the mega drive classics collection it’s got 50 games on it! My only gripe is I wanted more shoot em ups but hey ho. For me all the games are playable and great fun to dip in and out of , for the price less than 50 p a game. For all this lag talk I’m not too fussy, I guess I have noticed a few music issues in sor games but only for a second or so, I quickly got over it x x didn’t notice anything in the other games apart from fun. Got back into bare knuckle 3 recently and alien storm is my personal fave x x x x x x x
@KitsuneNight I've just ordered Dark Savior, I'm not sure if I've played it before but the boat scene looks familiar
@Zenszulu cheers I checked out the DF for it and it swayed me. Should be downloaded in about 30 minutes. Looking forward to it.
@carlos82
Its a pretty good Saturn game.
Maybe you played a demo of it at one time.
@KitsuneNight I think I’m going to hold off for the mo. It’s one of those things with emulation, it can be a bit hit n miss. I’m surprised it hasn’t had a patch if people are having an issue with lag...I mean the NES and SNES games with the online feel tight.
Alien Isolation is on my list but still a bit too pricey for me I think
@WiltonRoots
Fair enough.
Sega is very ...uneven even between ports.
For me 50 games was enough reason to go : take my money ( during a sale)
I don't find any of these sales news worthy as the same titles go on sale at the same price every other week. If the prices were going down it would be more news worthy.
Why hadn't ya'll mentioned that amazing Atlus (Sega) sale on 3DS last week (On US eShop at least)? You were able to get Stella Glow for $9.99, for example! Atlus used to have a million sales throughout the year, yes, but this was the first one in, oooh... what like over a year, or longer? Any Atlus games you needed to complete your collection, this was the time.
@KitsuneNight Yeah that's the thing, it is Sega, and as much as I supported them back in the day, they do have a habit of shooting themselves in the foot with whatever they release.
@WiltonRoots
Yeah Sega is very uneven.
That's part of their charm I suppose
You could buy the Mini Megadrive, but that's a lot more expensive then the classics collection.
Puyo Champions! If you were ever playing Puyo Puyo Tetris and wished you could just play Puyo online without all the Tetris players getting in your way, then Puyo Puyo Champions is the solution. Get it while it's cheap!
