Nintendo has revealed that Square Enix's Octopath Traveler has now sold two million copies.
The turn-based RPG had shipped one million units by August 2018, three weeks after it first went on sale, but the title has been steadily selling more and more copies over the past few months to reach this latest milestone.
To celebrate the fantastic news, the game has been put on sale on the Nintendo Switch eShop for a limited time. Here are the prices and discounts:
Discount | Price (UK) | Price (US) | |
Octopath Traveler | 50% | £24.99, was £49.99 | $29.99, was $59.99 |
The game will be 50% off worldwide until 2nd April, so make sure to jump onto the eShop and grab it now if you're intrigued. We'll leave you with a snippet of our review should you want to learn more:
Octopath Traveler is a special RPG, the kind of game that keeps an eye on the past while walking bravely into the future. Indeed, we’d even go so far as to say this is the best RPG you can find on the Switch to date, all elements of this game link together perfectly to make for a harmonious and immersing experience that you’ll find difficult to put down.

I never got to finish this game. I'll have to get back to it at some point, but may have to start again 😄. Definitely worth that price though
Hopefully, that means we get a sequel or at least another game like it with the same art style.
How much of that 2 million was on Switch though compared to PC.
@FragRed
Nx version sold 1 million copies
dr evil pinkie
I wish I got it at half price.
The presentation is amazing. I loved how the game looked. Gameplay-wize though, I got kinda worn down by the backtracking, trying to get everyone's story, and a few other things.
Here's hoping we get a second one though.
Need to complete Octopath someday. I've only completed 4 stories, but I have to level grind my other 4 heroes. >_>
A lot of Square Enix games are on sale currently. I’m thinking about getting that Mana Collection at half off.
@FragRed @KitsuneNight
Actually sold 1.5 million on Switch as of January 2019, before the Steam release:

Great game! Havent finished it yet, but its a lot of fun!
@FragRed
The Steam version of Octopath Traveler has sold 100,000-200,000 copies.
Now that we know Octopath has reached this level of success, could we have a FF6 remake with the HD-2D engine please!
After all FF6 was the inspiration for this game
@Toy_Link
March 2019 according to vgchartz.
Either way the NX has 75 % of the titles sales
@TJWorks Weird how this is different for everyone. I absolutely did not need to grind at all - my biggest issue was not overlevelling. I did all Chapter Ones, then Twos, then Threes, etc, and rotated everyone in and out so nobody was a higher level than anyone else - apart from my first pick, who you can’t rotate out until you complete their story. So I finished his Chapter Four first, and then didn’t bring him back into the party till the postgame.
Great game. Don’t think it’s the best RPG on Switch (Witcher 3) or even the best JRPG (XC2 or DQXI), but it’s certainly in the top tier.
@FragRed 80% of it.
I might grab this, i prefer all none indie games i own to be physical with the exception of games that come with an additional game download code, such as Bayonetta 2.
I always liked the look of this but it just screams over priced at me. This sale is perfect if it was for the physical copy. I'd even pay £35.
@TJWorks @Krull Similar. I have finished chapter one of each character, but I wasn’t as good as balancing the teams - so I need to level up some of my party.
I am taking a break from it now, but I intend to get back to it. I find the character stories compelling and I want to know how they end.
Well. Guess I'm buying another game.
I saw the date and it looked like it past. And then I realized that the sale is on until April 4th.
Fantastic game but extremely difficult in final boss. It left me a bitterness in the end that I never completed it but except of this, it's a very good game with a great soundtrack.
Cannot recommend this game enough, especially for this price. Disappointed that the prequel is gonna be a mobile game though. :/
Great game and a good time to buy it at that price if you haven’t played it yet. Really looking forward to a proper sequel on switch.
Might finally pick this gem up and give it a play through this summer. Will probably get it on PC though. Thanks for the heads up!
I understand the quality and astral of this game, yet... it was such cheap gameplay design. Grinds to bosses, bosses that you defeat only to have no indication that they'll suddenly return to full health... Just a bit lame.
Fun, but didn't click. A bit overrated.
Would give it a go if the physical version was that price. I like old skool rpgs, but the demo seemed very melodramatic, so not sure whether I'd be able to look past that.
Couldn’t get into the demo but I’ve heard lots of good things from people who have played this. Maybe it’s finally time...
2 million sold and one person finished it.
it is a great game, finish all path where is the sequel ? 50% off is a great deal go for it if you can afford it. still waiting for Square Enix next jrpg. Not sure about this but it feel like every year they drop one. they really support the Nintendo Switch
@KitsuneNight please stop referring to the Switch as "NX". It's pointless.
I bought the game on Switch and Steam, so I count for 2 of those 2 million.
@sailornic Bravely Default 2 should be coming this year.
I’d recommend skipping Octopath and go play anything from Final Fantasy 4-10 instead. Octopath had absolutely no connection between characters story-wise and boss battles were needlessly long and tedious.
@sanderev
Nope i wil keep calling it the NX.
Ps1 was referred too as the PSX for years as well.
@Robzilla Someone didn’t finish the game! The postgame ties all eight threads together really nicely. Whether that makes up for the preceding 32 chapters depends on your mileage. I really liked it, but get why others would find it tiresome.
@PALversusNTSC I play this game for weeks... It was really a great time for me. every path give a time to shine to each character. This game is a must have
@Krull You’re right, I didn’t get through it. Called it quits in the midst of the fourth story. I just think it has absolutely nothing on the classic Final Fantasies. I do love the art style though. I wish they would remake FF6 like that.
I'm playing through this right now (backlogs, am I right?). I've got one chapter 2 to work through, then I'm on to everyone's chapter 3s. I really like how the game is it's own thing gameplay-wise, but the Final Fantasy VI influence is obvious. The music is fantastic, the stories so far have been poignant and entertaining without delving too far into JRPG tropes, and the graphic effects (lighting and particle effects around characters who are basically sprites) are just awesome. If you haven't at least played through the prologue demo, you should.
I never understood what the fun is all about a game, where you play several caracters but without one great story. Its just pointless in a jrpg.
It looks realy great, and ofcourse can be fun, but its just a shame there is no story behind it that would have made it more apealing like final fantasy III was. This is what actualy holds me back from buying this, even if it will cost 5,-
I was expecting more from this game during development.
@Robzilla
Exactly my thoughts.
I'll dig this out of my backlog someday...unless the sequel is formally unveiled, in which case I'll jump back in immediately.
@PALversusNTSC
Yeah, no the PSX was the code name of the original ps1.
Sony later repurposed it for their white Japan only ps2 DVR.
But hey don't take my word for it
Just open any Playstation magazine from the UK from the late 90's.
Or wikipedia
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_(console)
The PlayStation[a] (officially abbreviated as PS and commonly known as the PS1 or its codename PSX)
And that smarmy ad hominem makes you look so very much more mature.
@KitsuneNight Do you own a Dolphin or a Project Reality?
Playstation X was its project name, Psx was the original launch name in the U.S as shown in early advertisements, then named playstation.
It became Playstation ONE with the slim version, and when the playstation 2 was launched, people starting to call it the ps1.

Sorry for my reaction btw.
@Skunkfish
Oh good, technicalities.
Let's ignore that naming the ps1 PSX was an actual thing shall we ?
And you missed the Revolution there btw.
As wel as Project Cafe.
Yet somehow it all of a sudden matters that I refer to the NX as the NX.
This is a very silly thing to argue about.
But I am aware I am fighting a losing battle, so I wil bow out of it.
Its sounds cooler, thats for sure.
This is a game I've really wanted to get into, but just couldn't dig it for some reason.
@XBontendo Same, I tried the demo back when it came out and I just couldn't get into it.
I realllllly loved this game. I even bought the soundtrack on iTunes. Some of the best music I’ve ever heard for a game.
Fantastic game! I really had a blast with it! It's on my list of games to revisit someday. I even bought the soundtrack! And the soundtrack is, by the way, some of the most gorgeous looking CDs I have ever seen! Each disk is one of the character's beautifully etched onto the surface. I didn't know CDs could look so good!
@KitsuneNight Agree that it is a silly thing to argue about, but you (probably) knew that people were going to call you out on it, so it feels like you were just looking for attention. The official name is Switch and the only abbreviation I’ve seen thrown around is NSW.
The game was an absolute bore at least from the 2 demos (which I think are the same?) that I played. The sprites were neat but I prefer sprites with fun animations to go with it. The story is extremely cliche and I heard they barely even connect the stories together so that blows even more. I did enjoy the combat a bit and the music from the demo was fantastic. I'd buy it if it ever gets a decent price cut just for those 2 factors alone
Also lmao are u guys seriously getting triggered over somebody typing 2 letters? Damn
Amazing. Let’s give nothing to those who help achive this numbers....
@Krull I took a different approach with the game. I divided the 8 protagonists in two teams of 4. I completed chapters 1 - 4 for the 1st team, and then completely switched to the 2nd team and did their chapters 1 - 4.
