In the early days of the Switch, we were pretty excited about the possibilities Nintendo's shiny new IP, ARMS, could bring to the table. We were hopeful that ARMS was going to turn into a genre-defining experience from Nintendo, following Splatoon's success in the world of online shooters, but Spring Man and co. didn't seem to generate quite the same lasting buzz as the Inklings did.
We might not have seen any new content - or anything at all, really - for a while now, but Nintendo has announced that an official online competition is on the way. The game is set to punch its way back to centre stage with the 'ARMS North American Online Open April 2020'.
More details on the event can be found here if you'd like to get involved. Registration is now open to qualifying residents in the US, Canada and Mexico, and will remain open until 4th April. There will be a total of eight tournament winners, all of whom will win 2500 Nintendo Gold Points.
We're still pretty baffled by the fact that no ARMS characters were selected for a proper roster slot in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and while we'd love to say that this is all happening to spark fresh interest in the game ahead of a sequel or new content, that'd just be wishful thinking on our part. We can dream, though, right?
Will you be taking part for old times' sake? Tell us below.

My boy Springman will get into Action once again ! 😀
Hope that nintendo remembers soon that directs exist too...
Wow just the other day I was thinking "What ever happened to Arms?" I never played the full release but it seemed like it had it's community. I would probably try a sequel if it had more single player content. But after the test punch thing I was not into the idea of playing it online.
I can't say that I play Arms a lot but when I do it's really really fun. I hope they do something more with the franchise. I know it's not everybody's cup of tea but it's a pretty quality game and there's loads of character.
I went back to ARMS a couple of months ago after not playing it for a couple of years and I was reminded of just how good it is. Ranked mode with a similar skilled opponent and the game is at its best. There's nothing else like it. The problem is finding any opponent in Ranked mode, never mind one with similar skills.
If Nintendo reduced the price by 50%,or made it part of a Select line then sales would pick up and there would be an online community again, which in turn would bring back those who stopped playing because they couldn't find anyone to play with. It will give it a new lease of life.
@TadGhostal They could take the core gameplay and spin it into Punch-Out, Metal Combat, Custom Robo, lots of things.
@OorWullie 100%. I find Arms to be a really neat game. Great to show of the Switch's uniqueness and it's really fun to me. As far as i remember most critics were pretty positive about it and it made me wonder why so many see it as a failure. A reduced price would greatly help this game. Maybe it just needs more attention and a price drop would help immensely with that. I hope they release a sequel at some point too
@Fuwa
What happened is that Nintendo themselves seemed to not really believe in this game, and with how they handled its release it got victimized by Splatoon 2.
It got far less promotion than Splatoon, was released just a few weeks before that game (and you could tell coz the playerbase dropped a lot when Splatoon came), and Nintendo never supported it as much as that game.
Only 6 months for new content updates followed by a few months of smaller updates (they called it "small", but they added a lot of gametypes for their Splatfest-like event and some new weapons, so kudos to the devs) was all it got, while Splatoon got more than double that support.
It was also hard to create hype coz as much as I love playing the game... it's really boring to watch. Hype tournament material this is not. And there was that thing where as soon as you dared to speak positively of it online, you'd get swarmed by haters every single time...
And despite ARMS having all that going against it, it still managed to sell over 2 million copies. Truly an underdog boxer story in game form ^_^
Would love a sequel down the line, especially with some real arcade/story modes in it and far more unlockable stuff. The game's world is actually quite interesting if you dig into the backstory stuff that's sprinkled about.
PS
Sorry about the wall of text, I have a habit of doing that for games that I love xd
@Fuwa I never tried the Test Punch as I bought the full game when I got my Switch. Was it just limited to Party mode? Not too keen on that myself. For me, it's all about the Ranked. If you get paired with a similar skilled opponent, the best of 3 battles are so much fun, you can choose Rematch too. Like I said in my comment though, it's difficult to find a Ranked opponent now. It's a shame.
@StefanN When I used to play it, I always used motion controls, they work brilliantly. I tried playing with a normal controller but wasn't too keen on it. However I read others talking highly of how it plays with a Pro controller so gave it a try, a few weeks ago and it clicked. I would still be playing it regularly if I knew I'd find an opponent.
I could actually get pretty far in this tourney, I'm signing up!
A vey nice game that did not get the attention it deserves. I hope a sequel will make arms a bigger game.
@OorWullie I wasnt a fan of Ranked myself because if you were good you get nerfed by getting little health next match and I disliked doing 2v1's or Free for Alls.
Glad there are people like you that enjoyed the game. Despite how well it did in reviews and sales it seems so many people consider this game a failure and bash it (a lot that dont even own the game tbh)...
@TheNewButler I say it does have the quality of a proper Nintendo game, just not the amount of content or longevity we'd expect from a fighting game.
Got it day one.
Online was good and after 3 months online was dead. First switch game I traded that I don’t regret one bit.
Problem is that someone gifted me this game again and I just can’t find myself traded it in yet as it’s a gift
Other then Smash Bros, this is my favorite fight game. Such an innovative and fun titke. And the coop play is amazing. Highly underrated.
@TheNewButler Personally I really loved the art style, the music and overall vibe, and the gameplay was fun enough, but never felt like it had something calling me back to play it. I wish it had more stuff to unlock as you play (aside from so many arms), proper character endings when you beat the game to give you a reason to do it (which I think they added afterwards but should have been there at launch), and that getting new arms didn't require as much grinding as it did.
this should have been Nintendo's first FREE release with the purchase of a NSO subscription
instead it's a game that costs real money and the integration with NSO barely exists
I love ARMs. I wish they did more with this game than they did.
@TheNewButler honestly I loved playing this with my siblings. We used to play it all the time till smash came out
@mesome713 I think ppl hate on arms because they have no friends to play it with.
@OorWullie There’s still an online community, it’s just smaller then some. A group called CasualARMS hosts online community events every single week to this day: https://www.casualarms.net
@ShadowSmile
Im guilty as well, i totally forgot about this game.
LOVED ARMS...
...and once they stopped doing the online events, I stopped playing. It's too hard to find someone online other than during events.
I think a 50% price cut is in order b/c there is simply less to experience now than there was when it came out.
Fun game though, it really hit the spot for me. I preferred it to Smash, but I think just b/c it was something new and I've played so much Smash over the last 10+ years that "more smash" wasn't as compelling to me (that said I have 50+ hours in Smash on Switch...I just have more in ARMS).
The key to ARMS is...
...watch the shoulders, not the hands!
@cyrus_zuo Try the CasualARMS online events, you’ll find plenty opponents all the time. The happen every week, including one happening tonight: https://www.casualarms.net
@JBBPro Cheers for that, I'll be sure to check it out.
Wasn't Arms developed by the same team who produced Mario Kart 8 deluxe? I loved playing Arms local & online back in the freebie days. Though must admit that unlike MK8 I haven't played Arms for years.
I would enter this if I was better at the game.
@TheNewButler its definently not a game for everyone but ppl can have opinions!
I might sign up!
i think arms just needed a better single player to help people master the controls. the one they got now isn't even alright since they require you to beat the minigame rounds to continue when you could have a load out that's absolutely garbage for them.
@TheNewButler
If you don't know about ARMS, basically ARMS is a BOXING game with Extending arms like Dhalsim (Street Fighter).
And talking about Boxing, you do realize if in Boxing there are some techniques such as Hook, Jab, Cross, Ducking, Dodging, Blocking, etc.
The game itself is NOT Paper Rock Scissors based. Which weapon you chosen and how do you use weapons and react with your opponent will determine the victory.
And for the weapons, each weapons have their distance , speed and direction to use. Each weapons also have their way to attack, so you must know how to avoid those weapon attack when being used by your opponent. For example, it's not wise to jumping around in front of your opponent when they use Hammer weapons as Hammer will attack in Vertical direction. You can avoid them by Dashing to left or right. If you find your opponent use Heavy Weapons, don't be panic. Heavy weapons deal more damage but it will stretch slower than Light weapons. When you see your opponent use Heavy weapons, mind to block their attack oftenly and try to find a chance to counter by Grab or Curving attack (Hook).
ARMS character design was unique due to some reasons. They wore masquerade to protect their eyes since their eyes have mysterious power that will be out of control if didn't covered by something, kinda similar with Cyclops from X-Men. And if you see the character design, you do realize if the character name has some references to real things that have possibility to be stretched such as spring (Springman), ribbon (Ribbon girl), chain (Ninjara), bandage (Master Mummy), noodles (Min Min), belt (Max Brass), etc. It looks crazy but that's the creativity by using unusual ideas and combine them in video games. Not every character are my favorite due to weird looking design like Helix but sure i have ever used them at least once.
Oh, btw...
This is my dedication for ARMS as i really like the game. 😉
No Euro tourneys again. Shame. Luckily I don't have this game so it's irrelevant for me.
@ZeldaLord
Don't expect a Direct anytime soon with this virus going on.
This came out of nowhere. ARMS is my most played game on Switch, and I kind of lost track of it and... geez, pretty much everything on Switch for a while. I'm out of practice, but this is just what I need to hop back into the game.
It's very odd that this is happening out of nowhere though. Makes me hopeful that there will b some sort of announcement about it. At minimum, we're due for the graphic novel to finally be released, though I'm hopeful there may be a Direct soon (and while I'd love ARMS content, I just want a Direct in general)
def. gonna jump on the bandwagon for this one!!
ARMS would have been (and would still be) an amazing pack-in for a switch bundle!! then, the game would/could have a huuuuge player base!!!
i hope the next entry of SMASH/dbfighters has this ARMS lobby/match-making style!! finding matches in smash and fighterz suuuucks lol
Woah, cool! Too bad I live in Japan, which as far as I know isn't part of North America. Which part of America is Japan in, again??
