Update (Tue 31st Mar, 2020 17:30 BST): And just like that, 9 Years of Shadows has been successfully funded. The Kickstarter campaign will still be live for another 23 days, during which time any further financial support will go towards the project's stretch goals.

The first of those goals, which will bring animated intro and ending sequences into the final game, is around $1,500 away from being met already.

Original Article (Thu 26th Mar, 2020 11:30 GMT): Indie developer Halberd Studios has launched a Kickstarter campaign in hopes of getting 9 Years of Shadows, a new Metroidvania game, onto Nintendo Switch.

Inspired by games like Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Mega Man Zero, Super Metroid, and Demon's Crest, 9 Years of Shadows follows battle maiden Europa as she explores her tragic past in a world devoid of colour. You'll need to explore the abandoned mechanical castle of Talos, which once served as an orphanage, and also the outside world by entering paintings of the castle's missing orphans.

We've got an official story description and feature list for you below:

Story:
In a land where a dark curse has consumed all color, an abandoned orphanage hides a terrible secret. After 9 years of living in the shadows, a brave warrior will rise: Europa. A battle hardened maiden who carries the fate of the world on her shoulders. Equipped with little else than her parent’s mementos, her task is daunting - venture inside the missing orphan’s memories to vanquish the curse that has been tormenting the people, and restore peace to the lands.

Features:
- A tragic and emotional story centered around battle maiden Europa
- Uncover the mysteries of your past and the missing orphans of Talos
- The healing power of music with Michiru Yamane and Manami Matsumae
- Gorgeously-drawn pixels in the abandoned orphanage and outside world
- Tons of replayability with hidden bosses, secrets, and collectibles

You can go ahead and check out the Kickstarter for yourself here if you're interested. The game needs to raise another $5,000 at the time of writing after securing more than half of its goal in a matter of days.

Famed composers Michiru Yamane (Castlevania: Symphony of the Night) and Manami Matsumae (Mega Man) are involved in the project, not only writing music but also appearing as in-game characters who can expand the player's magic and health meters. A neat touch.

Feel free to check out the project and let us know what you think. Will you be backing this one?
