Update (Tue 31st Mar, 2020 17:30 BST): And just like that, 9 Years of Shadows has been successfully funded. The Kickstarter campaign will still be live for another 23 days, during which time any further financial support will go towards the project's stretch goals.
The first of those goals, which will bring animated intro and ending sequences into the final game, is around $1,500 away from being met already.
Original Article (Thu 26th Mar, 2020 11:30 GMT): Indie developer Halberd Studios has launched a Kickstarter campaign in hopes of getting 9 Years of Shadows, a new Metroidvania game, onto Nintendo Switch.
Inspired by games like Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Mega Man Zero, Super Metroid, and Demon's Crest, 9 Years of Shadows follows battle maiden Europa as she explores her tragic past in a world devoid of colour. You'll need to explore the abandoned mechanical castle of Talos, which once served as an orphanage, and also the outside world by entering paintings of the castle's missing orphans.
We've got an official story description and feature list for you below:
Story:
In a land where a dark curse has consumed all color, an abandoned orphanage hides a terrible secret. After 9 years of living in the shadows, a brave warrior will rise: Europa. A battle hardened maiden who carries the fate of the world on her shoulders. Equipped with little else than her parent’s mementos, her task is daunting - venture inside the missing orphan’s memories to vanquish the curse that has been tormenting the people, and restore peace to the lands.Features:
- A tragic and emotional story centered around battle maiden Europa
- Uncover the mysteries of your past and the missing orphans of Talos
- The healing power of music with Michiru Yamane and Manami Matsumae
- Gorgeously-drawn pixels in the abandoned orphanage and outside world
- Tons of replayability with hidden bosses, secrets, and collectibles
You can go ahead and check out the Kickstarter for yourself here if you're interested. The game needs to raise another $5,000 at the time of writing after securing more than half of its goal in a matter of days.
Famed composers Michiru Yamane (Castlevania: Symphony of the Night) and Manami Matsumae (Mega Man) are involved in the project, not only writing music but also appearing as in-game characters who can expand the player's magic and health meters. A neat touch.
Feel free to check out the project and let us know what you think. Will you be backing this one?

This looks interesting. I like the soundtrack.
Though wouldn’t ‘9 Years of Shadow’—singular—be better?
It does look nice but the protagonist is looking ridiculous fighting in that ballroom dress. It might be artistic choice but it does not look good to me.
I hope it doesn’t have a messy launch like some “heavily inspired by that game” projects we’ve had in recent memory. It looks promising.
This looks good! It should reach its goal so I will keep an eye on it.
"New Metroid-..."
"...-vania"
Exactly what we all needed, yet another metroidvana!
@syrupdash same 🙃
@Zuljaras This is like Princess Peach: the metroidvania
Sounds like it errs more on the side of rip-off as opposed to inspired by. Portraits, really? Also mechanical castles do not scream orphanage material to me.
I really like the animation style for some reason.
Looks more appealing to me than Bloodstained. There’s been a flood of Metroidvania games so I’ll have to wait & see if this stands out.
For some reason the first line of the headline made me think there’s a new franchise just calling itself “Metroidvania” and it decided to start with the ninth entry.
“Metroidvania 9: Mother Dracula Brain’s Revenge Orchestra
@Roam85 Won't lie. I'd buy that.
I'll keep an eye on it but as of now discretionary spending is put on hold.
No physical, no money. I loved the game, but digital only is pure BS.
Looks nice. Definitely heavily influenced by the style and flow of Symphony of the Night but bringing its own ideas, as well. The formal attire is in line with Alucard's ridiculous fancy jacket and heavy cape, and adds to the dreary atmosphere, in this case. Will keep an eye on it.
@setezerocinco Eh? You seem to be limiting your game library unnecessarily. You really have no digital games? In my opinion you are missing out immensely, if so.
Good luck to this crew. It's going to take a lot of work to distinguish themselves from all the other indie, faux- retro, pixel art, metroidvanias.
@aaronsullivan digital I have just demos. The rest is physical.
@syrupdash Yeah it always seem like the Metroidvania games are more Vania than Metroid. Still waiting for one to hit like Hollow Knight but I'm not holding my breath (until Silksong of course).
Ah, lovely music! And the game looks pretty sweet too.
On a sidenote: Whatever happened to Hazelnut bastille? Very different genre (topdown, inspired by 2D Zelda), but it looked soooo promising.
So, Is the music actually a way to heal the character?
I am going to keep my eye on it in the next few days though the hardest choice will be for what system I want it for.
Looking at the tiers I may go for the $42 one.
Has more appeal to me than Bloodstained as it is pixel art. I am absolutely not sold on the protagonist though and there is very little to be seen here for a trailer that is supposed to make you jump up and throw your cash at it. The lack of said 'Trailer ' action makes me think this is very very early in development and that always concerns me a little with Ks projects.
Hopefully this will see a physical release ..
Please allow us to have custom button inputs.
@oceano Definitely plenty of -vanias to go around (although few really capture the same feel, which makes this particular one stand out). The only Metroid-likes I can think of are A Robot Named Fight and Xeodrifter.
Not sure that game could get any more emo if it tried!
So many Metroidvania style games as of late but still no new Metroid 5 or Castlevania: Symphony of the Night 8.
@setezerocinco I'm a pretty big physical collector, but a lot of indies simply can't afford to do a physical release.
@oceano ..I actually prefer “Metroidvania “titles to be more “Vania “,than “Metroid “..As I am a big Castlevania fan ..Hopefully this game will be as awesome as some of the more recent “Metroidvania “titles to be produced and release ..
wow, i never played a game where the main character uses a halberd before
Michiru Yamane! If anything I'll give the soundtrack a listen at least.
Is everything a metroidvania now?
Another one worth getting would be this one
Aeterna: Noctis - Traditional 2D art non-linear platformer, via @Kickstarter https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/aeternanoctis/aeterna-noctis-traditional-2d-art-non-linear-platformer?ref=android_project_share
@Deliesh Gato Roboto as well. Short but sweet
@HammerKirby nowadays I do not think so. They have kickstart and companies like Limited Run or Super Rare Games.
I see people rather have their game live in somebody else's shadow instead of it being its own thing by constantly throwing castlevaina or metroid in it.
