Update - Sat 21st Mar, 2020 01:25 GMT: Pre-orders for the Classic Edition and Standard Edition of the game are now live. The standard edition will set you back $34.99 and the Classic Edition including various extra goodies is $59.99. Pre-orders will close one week after the digital release (TBD).
Original article - Tue 17th Mar, 2020 02:45 GMT: It's still hard to believe Streets of Rage 4 is a thing - but yeah, it's happening. It's even better knowing a Limited Run Games physical release is also on the way. While we've been aware of this since the
, the physical games specialist has now officially revealed what this hard-copy "Classic Edition" of the game will look like and what exactly it includes. If you don't want that, you always opt with the standard edition.
In the Classic Edition, you'll get the game, game case, a SteelBook case, and a large Genesis clamshell that houses all of it (how fitting). "Open pre-orders" on the Limited Run Games website will start at 10am ET on 20th March.
Limited Run also noted some slight differences between the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 edition:
The Classic Edition will be available on PS4 and Switch, both will have the same Genesis clamshell coversheet, but Switch will include an additional slipcover with Switch platform branding.
Although pre-orders go live on 20th March and will be open for an extended period, a release date for this title hasn't officially been announced yet, so stay tuned. Will you be adding a hard copy of this game to your collection? Comment down below.

Looks amazing, I'll go ahead and preorder. Sucks for the PS4 version, but they only have themsleves to blame.
SteelBook case or steel bookcase?! I'd prefer a steel bookcase but think delivery costs would be prohibitively expensive!
So, there are two cases, inside another case? What is this, Inception? Do we find out at the end that we were playing a game all along?
@Pac-Manc A Streets of Rage 4 steel bookcase would be pretty neat. Fixed!
It's grand how this version is getting revved up(per)!
Ok, but where's the release date? I'd like to buy this game at some point, along with Panzer Dragoon, but both fronts of SEGA's indie retro franchise revivals have been silent on that front.
Oh no a Limited Run release 😒.
Well I hope it comes to Best Buy like every other Limited Run game I have purchased so far...
It's a common game, why does it need a limited physical release? Why can't it had a regular physical release like LizardCube's other game, Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap HD? I mean I like that Limited Run is giving it the go ahead but a regular physical release would had been much better so the game wouldn't be on scalper's radar after its launch release.
With an OST CD would have been much better. Anyway that's what I was afraid would happen: it won't be distributed in stores. Why, God? Why? This is a game that would have sold well!
@alexybubble pretty sure the release date will be announced 10am Pacific during the Nindies
@Moroboshi876 I'm sure it'll be at Best Buy.
Also I'm sure it will sell ok, but not crazy. SOR seems like a huge franchise to us, but we live in an era where a huge chunk of the gaming public doesn't know who Terry Bogard is.
Actually excited for this
Can't pre-order this. I need to see a review that says the Switch version runs properly. I am also on the fence about whether the devs will be able to pull off Streets of Rage levels of excellence. Hope they do.
@Tim_Vreeland Well, DotEmu games don't usually get physically released (bar Wonder Boy The Dragon's Trap) in stores. They seem to have some sort of agreement with LRG, and that sucks. But let's hope this time is different.
Not a fan of the cover artwork at all. Would have expected the Genesis style case to have artwork that resembled the original games.
Just let me play it. Will be getting the game no matter what probably download tho x x x x
It looks great and I love the Clamshell, but I dont like the games, so I can't buy it, can I?
Wife: No
Me: But it looks cool.....
Wife: You will never play it
Me: But just look at it.....
It would have been cool if they had an option to swap out the Genesis look for a Mega Drive look.
That clamshell design is terrible.
@SilentHunter382 I will be making one just like that.
@retro_player_22 well for one its not a common game, its not even out yet, there's no such thing as a scalper situation happening with this since both editions are open preorder and three, doing it by the order is far cheaper than making excess copies in a standard retail release.
street of rage as a franchise is not triple AAA enough for sega a wide physical release being the most likely reason
This should have a general physical release I always find it so difficult to buy games that have limited runs it’s annoying cos they will end up on eBay at stupid prices unless you are there at the minute these things open they are gone pretty much instantly
@SilentHunter382 Or at least just go for the black cover look that SoR 1&2 had on both Mega Drive and Genesis.
I just don't understand the switch case. It looks unfinished. The PS4 one looks much better :S
I just dont get why I should need both the steelbook and the standard case. It first happened with OoT3D and now both cases sit on my shelf, annoying me.
I would have prefered a MD "Japanese Version" release. But you cannot have everything.
@BionicDodo I wish the game used the art from the original games too.
@Moistnado I love pixel art and am a huge fan of the 16-bit generation, but I don't personally mind them changing the visuals as this is a sequel made in 2020, not in the 1990s for the Mega Drive. That said, the artwork doesn't feel like a modern updating of the old style, it looks more like a Final Fantasy cover.
DAY ONE PURCHASE
@jswhitfield8 The PS4 special edition does say "Genesis" on the plastic case.
I wonder how many people will accidentally order "Streets of Red" which is also available for pre-order at LimitedGames.
Very tempted by this, although I really don't like the Switch version of the clamshell - makes no sense without the Genesis branding! Might buy on PS4 instead in that case.
I hope they just do a standard edition as well.
An important thing to note about this Limited Run is that they'll be taking pre-orders until one week after the game's digital release.
Which means you have the option of trying the game digitally if you aren't sure you want this physically.
@Gs69 You don't have to be there there minute it opens. LRG needs to do a better job at communicating this, but they changed the way they operate a long time ago.
The game will be sold as a preorder. Meaning it can't sell out during the preorder window. They take however many preorders they get, and then have that many produced.
They also order an extra production for Best Buy to sell in their stores.
So yeah if you decide not to preorder a copy, and Best Buy sells out, then you may have to turn to eBay resellers. But if you want one, there is no problem getting one during pre-order week.
@Tim_Vreeland thanks I always get put off when they are not on general release to the point where I don’t even bother trying to pre order but if that’s the way they do it then that’s great Best Buy is not an option for me as I’m in the Uk but it’s good to know that a retailer actually gets stock just need someone in the Uk to do this but definitely not Game . When the pre order goes live I’m 100% getting this 👍🏻
**Pay attention to my very poor customer service story from LRG**
I ordered a game, it was never delivered even though the post office said it was, and they refused to issue a refund or send me a new game. They basically told me they would not do anything about it and this is despite having over $400 worth of pre-orders outstanding with them at the time. So I went to my credit card to claim it as fraud and out of spite they cancelled all my preorders, took out a 10% fee for it and have banned me from ordering again. Not that I EVER would. So if they lose your order and the post office said it was delivered...you are out of luck. In order for me to get a refund, and this is their official policy, you need to file a police report or get the US mail to say its lost. You have 30 days to do this. In LA, the LAPD refused to file a police report for lost mail of that amount and said just get a refund. They are not wasting their time on a ridiculous claim. The US Post Office takes up to a year to say a product was lost. So LRG effectively prevents themselves from ever having to issue a refund or a replacement, by issuing a 30 day limit, which in essence puts the burden of shipment on the customer rather than on themselves. They choose to use the post office, they send it to me, someone loses it...but I am held responsible? I have yet to touch or see the product, but now I'm supposed to file police reports and mail theft reports? THIS IS CALLED PUTTING UP BARRIERS TO AVOID REFUNDS.
So again...why ever order from them? If a long time customer who had $400-$500 on preorder gets treated that way, everyone else will. They offer the absolute worst customer service I've ever seen. I have never had anyone else ever suggest that their lost package is my problem. Not Amazon, where's its happened a dozen times over the past decade, not Ebay, where I've had multiple packages lost and not Etsy, where the same thing occurred. Everyone single one of these merchants apologized and sent me a new item immediately, LRG? They could care less about its customers and you really find that out once there's an issue.
You have all been warned.
And stil no word on an actual release date or pricetag
Just hype and announcements.
It's like a microcosm E3.
More importantly, Mega Drive slip in EU/Japan?
The steel case looks great. Really looking forward to this title. The first game in the series is greatest shmup of all time.
$60 bucks. I think I'm goodm
I’ll stick with the digital version; that absurd asking amount for the physical release is just utter nonsense.
@Agent721 you have my sincerest sympathies. I refuse to support companies like LRG for that exact reason. Let’s hope they crash and burn soon like GameStop...
A case in a case in a massive box all for a tiny Switch cartridge?
No soundtrack? No plushies? Not even a keychain?
No?
Just a case in a case in a box?
For a tiny Switch cartridge?
Genius.
@Wavey84 yeah- the soundtrack alone sounds amazing; can’t wait to blast it when I go to the gym.
Risky as the game might turn out to be crap.
I want to. But with Covid-19 about. I can see this game getting delayed for upto a year.
@Agent721 was going to get this until I read your post. Thanks for the warning. Gonna get it digital after reviews come out.
I took the classic Switch edition, the one with the Steelbook and THE GENESIS box. Couldn't resist !
Kinda cool but then again paying $60 for a $20 isn't.
@blockfight
Good decision. I was totally shocked at how poor and uncaring their customer service is. In this day and age, to treat a long time paying customer without even an ounce of effort is ridiculous. They truly do not care about anything BUT their profits. They simply made a very poor decision.
@NihilistNirvana
Definitely. Its absolutely shocking customer service. No one treats a customer this way. I never saw the product, it was never in my mailbox, why am I going out of my way to get a refund? No one operates this way but them. Honestly, I'm glad they refunded me nearly $500 in pre purchases, as there's no way I would give them a dime more of my money. You have to have self respect.
