After a five-year development cycle, Yacht Club Games has finally completed Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove. That doesn't necessarily mean it's done with the iconic indie character altogether, though. In fact, it already announced Shovel Knight Dig – a joint project with the talented team at Nitrome (known for titles such as Bomb Chicken).
During a recent appearance on the Nintendo Power Podcast, Treasure Trove artist Sandy Gordon explained how the team would be able to continue making games starring the indie hero for a very long time. Treasure Trove director Sean Velasco added to this, by stating that they'd never stop making games about the character:
We're gonna keep on making Shovel Knight stuff forever and ever and ever
So, there you have it – Shovel Knight is here to stay. It does make us question what Yacht Club might have planned for the future. Apart from Shovel Knight Dig, the only other game we know it's linked to is the 8-bit ninja platformer Cyber Shadow by Mechanical Head Studios.
Would you like to see Yacht Club focus more on Shovel Knight in the future? Do you think this character could end up being as timeless as certain other video game mascots? Share your thoughts below.

I generally prefer it when developers continue to make a wide range of original and different games rather than milking one particular IP for all it's worth so I hope they don't overdo it but I assume they know what they're doing and have some sort of a plan. As long as there's plenty of variety going forward rather than every game just being the same old thing it's fine I guess.
If Shovel Knight is dead 50 years from now, I'll know to never again trust Yacht Club for blatantly lying to their fans with PR nonsense.
Heck, if they're gonna make Shovel Knight games "forever and ever and ever," I had better see a new game in the year 3067 or I'll be very hurt and disappointed. I'm holding them to this promise.
I'm down for 16-bit Shovel Knight. Or Shovel Knight 64!
He has certainly been all over the place as a DLC character.
Shovel Knight is a labor of love and you never want to see your digital baby vanish into obscurity. I support more and more Shovel Knight!
Wouldn't this backfire on them? Nothing lasts forever; people will get tired of this series. And also, do they want to be only known for making shovel knight games?
Come play with us. Forever and ever. All work and no play makes Shovel Knight a dull boy.
So, when do we get Super Shovel Knight and Shovel Knight 64?
Well, if Nintendo can do it so can these guys, so long as they keep making great games.
Personally, if they took a break to make new DuckTales games based around the new show and in the vein of the NES/Remastered/Shovel Knight, I'd be pre-ordering those games INSTANTLY.
Heck, let's have a Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck game.
I’m glad the IP had a future, as it’s one of my fav indie games. But I also hope they branch out a bit. Even if they can cover any genre with the franchise, it’d be great if they do some unrelated games now and then.
Also, considering Dig has a whole new slew of knights... I hope they do expand on the existing knights backstories. The ones that didn’t have campaigns. I’m quite interested in the story behind Propeller Knight’s rose, and Polar Knight has to have an interesting past. Given the amount of time they spent on this entry, I’m not going to ask for campaigns for every character in the base game... but I wouldn’t mind hearing their stories eventually.
Heck, at the very least, please add online play to Showdown! I absolutely love the multiplayer in that and want to play it against more people!
@Maulbert they were in a poll the devs posted awhile back (if I recall correctly) so pretty sure there’s a strong possibility. They also mentioned a kart racer.
@Menardi One, I agree. SK is damn near everywhere. Two, f'n Menardi!!!
The Shovel Knight and Shantae franchises are my favorite indie games of all time. Their music is sublime, the gameplay/lore is exquisite and the cheeky humor is dynamite. I cannot wait to see what Yacht Club and Wayforward Games come up with next in the days ahead. I will always love and support them no matter what!
@MsJubilee -glances over at the Mario, Zelda, Metroid and POKÉMON franchises on his shelf-
You might wanna think before you post next time?
Pah! They’re backing the wrong horse. Plague Knight is clearly superior!
Like others, I’m totally behind a Shovel Knight 64 (more than a Super Shovel Knight, TBH). However, what about The Legend of Shield Knight: A Shovel to the Past? I’d love to see Yacht Club tackle a Zelda-like.
I’d love to see Shovel Knight RPG.
@BenAV Nintendo milks it like crazy as well namely with Mario and it works for them quite well.
I'd love to see a Shovel Knight Metroidvania or an RPG Paper Mario style where you have to input timed button presses to land your moves etc
@ShadJV Showdown is on a lot of systems. Including the Wii U and PS3. Even if they focus on only the modern ones, it would still be a hassle for a smaller team to include online play
@KingBowser86 Slams fist on table in agreement Aye! Fantastic idea!
Shovel Knight is one of the few games released for every console of the current generation: 3DS (which I think looks best with 3D graphics similar to 3D Sonic the Hedgehog), Vita, Wii U, Xbox One, PS4 and Switch.
Is there any other?
@KingBowser86 That, sir, is the most genius idea I’ve ever heard.
For every shovel knight there’s a bucket of devs who got nowhere near mainstream success with their game character and world and have no choice but to try something different to pay the bills. I’m sure YC know this all too well
I will play forever and ever... you deserve it *claps
I love Shovel Knight at this point, but a Shovel Knight "64" wouldn't interest me much.
I'm glad to hear they are in a position to do more Shovel Knight. The devs seem pretty smart, so I hope they look at other examples with Nintendo being a good one, that one important aspect to maintaining a franchise is to have it go away for a little while so that people have a chance to miss it. Ideally, they'll be able to create a few strong properties so that when one is on a break, they can work on another.
I enjoyed the first Shovel Knight game very much. However, all the other games felt like just DLCs/side quests and not worth buying standalone so I got tired of Shovel Knight and stopped playing the "new" but not really new games.
If they want to milk the Shovel Knight as a long running franchise, then they need to change things up and/or make actually new games. Like Nintendo, most of their games with repeated characters are largely independent and give new/different experiences. The current set of Shovel Knights games are just more of the same rehashed stuff.
@Entrr_username my game design problems literally required us to learn how to program for online play during freshman year. It’s not as complex as you’re making it out to be. A lot of indie games have online play, even cross play.
they've been getting better everytime so WOOOO
Great. People complaining at this is like miyamoto saying aftet super mario bros 3. Thats it. I will nevwr make another mario game!
@gokul32 You clearly don’t know what a sequel is. It’s supposed to be rehashed
What about Pick-Axe Squire or Hatchet Sheriff?
Also are we ever going to see a sequel or are they just going to keep adding dlc to the base game forever and ever?
I really hope they shake things up with Shovel Knight and make something new instead of pretty much making the same game over and over. I'm getting really bored of the Shovel Knight games.
I thought Yacht Club Games might have another potentially great IP in them, but it probably makes much more sense to assure some success by leveraging the popularity of Shovel Knight.
Shovel Knight can translate to different genres not just different console eras. The team has already explored different types of games within the action platforming genre, so I expect they will keep the gameplay fresh.
How about Actraiser-style: keep the action platforming and also manage the growth of a kingdom? There's not much of a limit in the Shovel Knight lore.
Reads " Happy to milk Shovel Knight forever and ever"
I hope they finally do something fresh with the Shovel Knight franchise. It's been pretty stale for a while now.
I wish they would do other storys for the other knights, I want to know Tinker Knights back story
