As you've no doubt heard by now, the Sonic the Hedgehog movie is officially out in cinemas. It's already estimated to have banked $65 million in North America on its opening weekend and fan feedback so far has been generally positive.
If you're still on the fence about it or haven't got around to seeing it yet for whatever reason, our American-based video producer and resident Sonic fan Zion Grassl is here to tell you why should go and see it right now. He absolutely loved it. We can't say much else beyond this, as there are a fair amount of spoilers in this video – especially towards the end.

I still have to wait until 26 February 2020 for Sonic movie 2020 to be aired in Indonesia.
Still don't feel like i gotta go fast to the theater to see it but will definitely look for it on home video. I've always loved Jim carrey when he's being his goofy ace ventura like self!
As for the critics they're not the end all be all opinion on which films are good or not. Many movies hated by critics are among my favorites such as Willow, Ghostbusters 2, Labyrinth and even Weekend at bernies 2. Hey i like a little stupid fun now and then! Otherwise i wouldn't be into Jim carrey!
From what ive noticed, many reviewers have crapped on it, while the majority of viewer comments have been positive. The movie is solid at the very LEAST. It was entertaining enough and had a few genuinely laugh out loud moments. Frankly it’s about as good as a buddy movie with Sonic could be.
Its not groundbreaking or amazing but it definitely had some heart and you can tell they made a sincere effort with this. The fact that they even acknowledged the original design of the character and took time to update it alone deserves some praise.
Without going into spoilers, some of the ending stuff seems to leave open a lot of possibilities from where they could go from here. If the movie has any real ‘issue’ its that it does play it a bit safe, but given expectations i think its reasonable for them to have, and frankly I’m personally interested to see a potential sequel. They have a solid platform from which to build off and they Have far more leverage to let loose in a sequel.
I've seen the movie last week and I agree with that the movie is good. Much better than most video game movies. But indeed, it's a kids movie, don't go expecting too much from it and just enjoy it for what it is.
It was actually pretty decent, even as a Sonic fan. The sequel should it be made, should have a slightly more mature tone, maybe with a bit more action. The action scenes were great and maybe with a higher budget they could excell further. Less corny jokes and laughable product placement are my only real critiques at the end of the day. Solid movie all around imo
It’s not a “Must-See” but it was cute for what it was. I only saw it for Jim Carrey (he never disappoints!)
I enjoyed it a lot. I would agree that it is nothing revolutionary, some jokes do not hit, and it is a kid's movies, but it has heart and charm. Our fears of it paying no tribute are unfounded. Little things like the inclusion of familiar instrumentals of certain tunes and the surprise inclusion of a set of minor Sonic Adventure inspired characters were great!
So are we going to compare this to the Mario film from ‘93 or the upcoming one?
@Severian but of course! I shall just peer into my crystal ball and....it compares favourably to the Oscar winning upcoming Mario film and is much better than the old one.
I've no interest in this. Despite NL's apparent liking of the film and even my friend saying they enjoyed it. It looks bad. The whole idea of the film sounds unappealing to me.
If I wanna enjoy some Sonic, I'll just hop on Sonic Mania. If I wanna watch something, I'll stick to Crunchyroll and YouTube.
I loved it!
It definitely surpassed all my expectations and i highly recommend everyone to give it a watch, it is actually a really good movie! 😃
I found the movie to be bland and almost nothing to do with sonic.
The main reason I don't want to see this is because of Jim Carrey
Love Jim Carrey, and Sonic will always be cool to me even though I don’t play his games... watched Dumb and Dumber recently with my son, his first time, and he LOVED it, I think we’d enjoy this.
@Heavyarms55 don’t just hate and be negative. Watch the movie than judge it.
You click the article to say you have no interest in this. Well done.
@Severian the one from 93
Honestly, it looks like a renter for me...that is unless my 7yr okd suddenly gets the urge to see this in theaters. Either way, I hope it succeeds.
I’m taking the kids to watch this. Looks great. Jim Carey never disappoints
@Severian I remember been confused with the Mario movie! 😂😂May be funny to watch now to see how crap it is 😭
That's the story of 40-y.o. guys forcing their kids to go to the cinema to watch daddy's favourite videogame character. But there's Mr Carrey acting as a mediator between these two generations.
@Gamesurfer my kids wanted to go see it and loved it to bits. suprisingly good movie, even in german lol
@Anti-Matter
It'll be 26 Feb before you know it.
I'm personally surprised its already 16 Feb and we are closing in on the third month.
2020 is nearly 3 months old already......
Are there some really down voting comments that have something positive to say about the movie? Are some of you really that petty and childish that you can't handle that a movie that you wanted so badly to be awful may actually be decent?
I love the movie. Dr Eggman is my favorite villain, so it was interesting to see a different take on the character. I also like how they focused on how Eggman does not care for other humans as they all seem useless to him. If they do a sequel, I am thinking his next assistant will be a robot.
There were also plenty of Easter eggs, which I enjoy seeing.
Yeap the movie was awesome, not Avatar, Avengers, Super Star Wars Trilogy, or The Lord of the Rings Trilogy level of epicness but a good fun film for the kids and the adults who are still kids at heart.
@La-weejee
I disagree
everybody has an opinion and they are welcome to air it, whether it's positive or negative.
I have zero interest in this movie for example and the only reason I'll ever watch it is when i pick up used and cheap.
@KitsuneNight I agree about the opinion entitlement but not blindly judging something.
After this review I want to see the movie in theaters even less. I was always a Sonic fan and remember fondly the first Sonic game I played on the Genesis. I am glad it is doing well and hope it has a great run but unless there is something astonishing to uncover my guess is will be a good streaming movie but no more than that.
For what it was, i enjoyed the movie. One of the better video game movies i've seen in a long time.
I doubt Ben Schwartz is a huge Sonic fan. I saw a video where he commented on a Sonic speedrun and didn't seem to know much about the game or show interest to that extent. Also he always describes Sonic as a kid with attention disorders, we all know Sonic is always 16 in canon... So yeah, he absolutely nailed the voice but a huge fan? Doubt it.
About the movie I am still confused about the huge switch on roles. Suddenly Sonic stops being the pursuer and Eggman is the one after him, because of an invented power he holds? Yeah I still liked the movie by why turn things upside down like that so much?
