Update (Tue 18th Feb, 2020 11:00 GMT): Following on from the news that the coronavirus outbreak had impacted the production and pre-order dates for the Animal Crossing-themed Switch console in Japan, Nintendo has now confirmed a new reservation date for those looking to get their hands on one.
Pre-orders will now open on 7th March - the same day that pre-orders go live for the newly-announced Coral Nintendo Switch Lite console.
Original Article (Thu 6th Feb, 2020 10:00 GMT): Nintendo has revealed that production of the newly-announced Animal Crossing: New Horizons Switch bundle has been impacted by the new coronavirus outbreak.
In an update posted on its official Japanese website, Nintendo has issued an apologetic notice of postponement for pre-orders of the console in the region. With production taking place in China - where the coronavirus has caused the most devastation - shipments of the new system will be pushed back; the original pre-order opening date of 8th February has been delayed to a vague 'to be determined' date.
The coronavirus has now reportedly taken 563 lives, with 28,018 people confirmed to have been infected in China alone as of midnight Wednesday. At least 230 cases have also been confirmed outside mainland China.
Last week, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa revealed that general production of the Switch in China had also been impacted. Pre-orders for the new Animal Crossing system can still be found at some western stores.

I was planning to preorder earlier this week but wasn't able to in the end. Maybe I'll try to go do it tomorrow then.
Understandable. People are kind of dying during this outbreak, so Nintendo needs to figure things out from--well--from here on out.
It's sadly kind of ironic considering we also just got confirmation on the whole "no save data transfer" thing.
@Rodan2000
You know, predicting complaints doesn't make your comment any smoother.
I have this preordered in the UK but I'm not bothered if it arrives on time as clearly more important events are happening in China.
Better to over-react and be safe than not to be careful and have someone get sick when it could have been prevented.
But I very much do still think all this fuss over the coronavirus is overblown media hype looking for clicks.
There are plenty of other things far more common and more lethal. But they aren't new and thus not as scary.
@Heavyarms55 pretty much all news is like that these days
I have one pre ordered. I will happily wait.
Do you remember the days when all consoles were made in Japan...
@AlexSora89 not really ironic though is it? Coincidence, maybe, but it’s certainly not irony
@Northwind it’s the article literally below this one on the NintendoLife website. A quote directly off the Japanese AC website specifically stating that you won’t be able to transfer save data, even if it’s because you bought a new console.
As for this article- I’m with everyone else. Better safe than sorry.
Why can't Nintendo have a plant in Japan, Vietnam or South Korea as well?
@Rodan2000 I am glad I am not the only one who likes to distinguish between irony and coincidence. Yes, it may be a small thing, but I believe words are important. Thanks, friend!
I can't believe companies have to apologise to people for this. Anyone should realise that peoples health should always come before manufacturing games consoles or shipping toys etc.
@RasandeRose Nintendo has a shaky relationship with Korea. Piracy is massive there. It was not uncommon for people to sell hacked Wii consoles or Nintendo DS consoles with rom cards at retail stores. The 3DS was delayed quite a long time because of this and they didn't even bother releasing the Wii U there. Customers had to import from Japan. Switch seems to be doing well in Korea though so things are turning around for them.
@Heavyarms55 commonality doesn't matter, it's really just SARs and is contagious as the flu, but the lethality is up in the air. Again, the news is coming from China. There aren't many "confirmed" cases, but who's doing the reporting? I mean, the Chinese government shut cities down, WHO is looking for 700.milliom dollars in aid and the super rich are going cash. It's probably pretty bad.
@Northwind Not a problem. I’m just sorry that my ‘assistance’ is only to confirm crappy news.
not that anyone over there will see this comment but still, i want to say, i am sending love and hope to everyone affected. trying my best to do so, anyway.
Why is Japan the only one affected by this? I assume the North American and European and UK consoles are made in China as well.
@Likethepear Perhaps due to shipping time, the consoles for those regions are produced first, with the idea being that Japan is much closer and thus they can do the Japanese units last and still make the deadline.
Ah, the ol’ “Please Understand.” Haven’t heard that one in a while.
Luckily I managed to sneak in a pre-order
I was concerned this might happen last Thursday in the other article.
Overall Switch production slowing down in Feb may not be that big of a deal, just make it up later, but when you have a big game coming out and you announce themed models for it, then you have a problem.
"I could see this becoming an issue if the Switch they are building now are Animal Crossing themed ones made for bundles.
Game releases in less than 2 months and they haven't really talked about bundles which we all assume are coming."
This is why we should make stuff in America again.
Didn't Nintendo start to move some of their Switch manufacturing out of China when the US started imposing more tariffs? That might be part of the reason the Western regions aren't as immediately impacted by this news.
Nintendo really needs to sort out the system transfer issue with Animal Crossing New Horizons then before the game releases. Lots of us are trading in our current Switch systems for the new ACNH model. If we don't get our systems on time, then we definitely can't play the game. Obviously peoples health and safety are PARAMOUNT but I feel like this is a problem Nintendo has caused for itself by its weird policy on no system transfer for this game only.
@cgpwns I think the West isn't mentioned yet because our release date (in Canada at least) is March 13, one week before the game releases. In Europe I think it launches the same day as the game because they have a download code with their systems. Japan was getting the system a month early, sometime in February. That's likely why they're affected. But I wouldn't be surprised if a delay is announced for other regions if the virus continues to worsen.
@DarthFoxMcCloud Date was originally March 13 for my country at least (Denmark), but it was pushed back to the 20th now. I got an email from the people I pre-ordered at saying the bundle was delayed to the release date due to the corona virus. They hadn't received more than 20% of what they needed, so they wouldn't be shipping any of them until release date.
@Bermanator sure, go for it, but don't complain when merchandise will cost you 10 times as much.
It's probably going to take a century or so and a few riots before you can afford stuff at a reasonable price again.
Well, that unless you restore slavery, but in that case I'd be worried if I was you.
@Gamesurfer We can enslave illegal immigrants that cross the border.
Would be a justifiable punishment for not becoming a legal citizen and trying to drain our economy.
@Gamesurfer it only costs 10x more because the investors and higher ups can’t go a year without giving themselves crazy raises and insane bonuses.
No need for slavery. They could still pay workers and release affordable products. They choose not to, because they are greedy.
I really just need the controllers, can they please be sold separately in the US?
Has the Direct been affected by the Coronovirus?
Any tips on what to disinfect my unit with when it comes? Just to be safe.
@Bermanator you could do that for the initial generations, then those who earn enough would free themselves, and since their population would inevitably end up on mixing with yours, you or your kids would risk to be enslaved if you ever get into debt.
It's funny how those who invoke prevarication never think it could turn against themselves.
@konbinilife Imagine if they could split those raises among all the workers instead. Do you think their gain would be relevant?
