Today's Animal Crossing Direct brought with it a ton of information nuggets regarding the upcoming Animal Crossing: New Horizons for Switch. You can check out the entire list of new additions, but the thing that had us sitting up in our chair was the new ability to remodel the landscape of your island at will.
That's right, once you're in possession of an Island Designer Construction Permit you'll be able to not only build paths, but also remodel the landscape itself. This includes shaping existing rivers, creating ponds, lakes and waterfalls, and demolishing cliffs. Whatever landscape you desire, you can now quite literally shape your Animal Crossing town as you see fit.
It might not seem like much if you've never played the series before, but this is a huge change for veterans who have always dreamt of more control over the geography of their villages.
If that wasn't shock enough, the character in the trailer just casually hops over a stream while engaged in this landscaping like it's nothing:
Blimey. How far we've come!
Yes, yes, minor details perhaps, but this is big news for series aficionados. What was the biggest news for you in the Animal Crossing Direct? Let us know below.

The beginning of Direct was quite boring until i saw Terraforming the island... WOW !! 🤯
I was thinking ACNH = Animal Crossing x Dragon Quest Builders. 😀
Man, this month is going to last for some eternities
I FREAKED OUT. We can make little land art, destroy road blocks, discover secret paths, go on those ledges we couldnt get to, make waterfalls, fix a bad layout, compliment paths, decide better places to put villagers, ITS THE BEST PART TBH IM HYPED
I was thinking about something...the height limit for the terraforming...because I think it would be so neat to have a house on top of a cliff!
Like I said just a while ago in another article, I still wish that there could be more than 1 island per Switch, but anybody I share the island with, I'll just let them make the terrain as they want.
Then-considered random face, and town design were reasons for multiple resets on the AC game, when starting a new town. Didn't get what you liked? Time to reset the Gamecube. The face of the player can be controlled, but not the landscape.
Literally was the best part of the direct
Hmmm. I wonder if...
Looking forward to inviting villagers I hate and leaving them on tiny islands 😂
Seems like a cool feature!
‘Mine Crossing’ more like! Goodbye social life...
I want to see someone fashion a miniature Koholint. Can it be done?
I'm hoping that we see the Dream Suite feature return. Getting to visit people's shared towns in ACNL was great, people had some fantastic ideas for themed towns and residences.
Make your island be one big maze!
I hope we can make caves. Like if we have a 3 tier cliff and dig out below one of the lower levels creating a cave, or passageway
I still wanna know if we can move/remove boulders.
What about beaches and the Shopping Street ?
This feature alone makes this game the “botw” of animal crossing. The things we love are still there, but this makes it a whole new type of game, and the first really big leap since the GameCube one. There’s a reason nintendo isn’t showing us anything coming up this year, because this is the big one. Minor annoyances with the save stuff, but this direct gave me so much more context for those choices, and I’m very impressed with what they’ve done here
I'm hoping we can do bridges over ravines! Or ones that do not require a river to be directly under them by like half a foot.
Altering beaches would be nice as well
@Crockin,
I think you are right, the usual first Nintendo direct of the year would have happened by now if It wasn't for the Animal crossing delay, if the game was released in December 2109 as originally planned we would of had today's direct back in November, but as we got the delay this Animal crossing direct was always going to happen before the normal direct, but as a leaker stated there would be two directs this month and one would happen on the 20th, what is the betting we get the normal direct next Thursday.
@johnvboy Nintendo is definitely unpredictable, so I'd never rule it out completely! I feel like they'll wait until this is out first. They want people to go all in on this game
@Crockin,
I do not see a reason why they need to wait for this to come out, after all we have known about the game for ages and I feel the main reason for it's delay was to have a big game for the beginning of the year, Nintendo tend to have a bit of a first party drought around this time of the year, and they could afford to delay this with a big hitter like Pokemon sword and shield out for the holiday period, there could have also have been a bit of a clash between the two, I was very surprised to see two massive games like this coming out around the same time in the first place.
@johnvboy I'm just saying Nintendo rarely ever busts out a showcase of new games this close to a AAA release with the exception of e3, and some oddball announcements here and there. Obviously I am unemployed
I wasn't sure if I was gunna buy this game or not, but, when I saw this in the direct today it changed my mind.
This feature was the real game changer for me. With the absurd amount of customization options within the game, this entry may bring me coming back for even longer than the previous ones (of which I played for years).
This game is so gorgeous, even with the bizarre save restrictions.
I knew there was a Minecraft vibe there.
Fingers crossed for an extra tier and not just two. But incredible nonetheless
Will wetsuits and swimming return? If so, ima ‘bout to have a bunch of small islands!
