During the recent Animal Crossing: New Horizons Direct, Nintendo explained how 'sometime after launch' and only under 'certain circumstances' (for example, 'console damage' and 'loss') would the company be able to restore save data.
The catch? It's apparently a one-time-only deal for Nintendo Switch Online members. It means that if an unfortunate incident was to occur not once, but twice, and you lost your Animal Crossing save data, Nintendo would not offer its assistance or support.
Now, though, according to Nintendo Everything, a new version of the recent Animal Crossing presentation has been uploaded. Instead of the statement about Switch Online members only being able to recover their save data once, it now says more details about save data recovery will be shared at a future date. Below are the before and after screenshots:
Nintendo Switch Online members can only have save data recovered one time due to the loss or damage of system.
More details on save data recovery functionality will be shared at a future date.
Surprisingly, this isn't the first time something like this has happened this week. A few days ago, "in-game purchases" returned to the ESRB rating on the Animal Crossing; New Horizons game page. And while New Horizons won't support cloud saves, it was discovered this week that users would be able to transfer save files from one system to another at a later date.
Is Nintendo perhaps listening to fan feedback? Tell us what you make of this in the comments below.

I assume it's still one time recovery but from each switch .... Which makes more sense . Once you save your island to the new switch, it'll be reset?....... But idk. I'm not one to lose things like phones or switches (knocking on wood) but hopefully those who do lose their switch in the future can rest easy and can recover their things .
Darn. And all the while I was planning on destroying two Switches. I guess I'll have to get by with destroying only one.
I would love to imagine Nintendo has paid attention to all the negative feedback and are considering a better way.
But I doubt it.
looks like theyre still flip flopping on how they wanna do it. i hope this means theyre considering restoring our data as many times as we need. seems dumb to only let us do it once
Please Nintendo, for once, listen to the fans
Never played an animal crossing game before, any advice?? Cause I'm on the fence for this. Will get it for my daughter regardless.
At least they are listening.
@Rpg-lover
Start playing and let it happen. Everything is fun and zen in this game.
If they could somehow build in being able to play across a Switch and Switch Lite on the same account that would be nice too. 30% of Switch owners now have two consoles (Nintendo's own figures).
So I guess in your life time if you're were unlucky enough to have it happen 3 times then fair dos. If you did it every weekend Nintendo will tell you where to go
Nintendo needs to start using workarounds to prevent "cheating", and be much more flexible about accounts, etc. The purpose being that they won't have to use extreme, & unnecessary methods such as this, to prevent cheating. Also, account flexibility works out in their favor, since people would have a favorable perspective on Nintendo's handling of such things.
@Capt_N Um......this IS a workaround. Preventing cheating is not at all an easy task, considering that you didn't provide a solution and only demanded results proves how difficult it is to come up with one. Not to mention, sadly, cheating prevention methods affect everyone, not just the cheaters. Consider it the cheaters spoiling the fun for everyone. And any solution that gives the players the benefit of the doubt, obviously ignores the fact that the solution is a cheating prevention method to begin with.
@Capt_N In Animal Crossing's case, I don't think restriction of cloud saves is purely about preventing people from cheating. Each user gets their own set of cloud saves but each user in Animal Crossing shares the same island so it doesn't really work.
I take it there must be some sort of system-wide cloud save going on in the background... otherwise how can an island be restored from the server in the first place? ::
What the freak does it matter anyway if people want to cheat? Whether it support cloud saving or not people still find a way.
@brettsynthetic You mean like Project Rainfall?
Also they can easily support cloud saves. They do not even give a reason why it does not support it.
Don’t give me that all users use the same island nonsense. They can easily copy the island and separate save files or just let you upload the save file of the last save file so all people continue where the last person took off. It is not that hard.
I'm sorry, but all this nanny state/totalitarian control of saves and the way we can play the game stinks of microtransactions, it really does. The fact that Nintendo is storing all our saves in the cloud, but not giving us access to them is out of order and I'm steering well clear of this game until I know I'm not going to have real money purchases constantly shoved in my face.
I found it funny in the direct that when they started the faq section they conveniently dodged the biggest most asked question... 'Will New Horizons have microtransactions?'
At the very least, Nintendo is going to store information from people to work out how to encourage spending from players in the future games.
I feel like the best solution as a compromise would be to allow one recovery or system transfer every three months.
Sometimes ignorance is bliss. I'm having the same issues I had with Pokemon Sword and Shield with this game. Everywhere I look people have latched on to a negative issue to overshadow ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING positive about the game.
Good. This entire thing baffles me - it seems to be purely to prevent item duplication which in a game like this doesn't seem to give you any competitive or significant advantage.
I think the one time per console confused people. Nowadays you have to make things as clear as day.
@Kohaku so I won't be disappointed? Cause I'm really tempted with all the hype in it.
Why don’t they just allow us to back up the save data?
What is cheating in this game even? Time manipulation was an ingame function in NL, so that wasn't it.
Hacking an inconvenient stone out of existence? I know someone who did that, and I wouldn't have noticed because I typically don't go around counting people's stones. And they were happier playing in their own town.
Duplicating items... maybe. But it doesn't hurt me if someome decides to put 50 ice cream lamps in home. The largest ac community is adamantly against even talking about cloning, and even a few years after release I could easily find people paying high prices for my legit Saharah wallpapers. I myself had someone clone a golden watering can for me ONLY because getting one the normal way would have forced me to build my town matching some criteria that go against the "create your own world" spirit I bought the game for.
So, what kind of "cheating" do you need to protect other players from?
Everyone just take a deep breath and R e l a x
@Rpg-lover Animal Crossing is basically Sims with a new theme and look.
I personally don't care what they do with it. Never intended on buying it.
@Razer ooh! That's helpful thanks, personally not a fan of the Sims.
@Rpg-lover I would say that Animal Crossing is about building and improving your community. It’s also about maintaining relationships with animals and the environment of the town. To do this, I would advise trying to play everyday. Once you get the hang of things, it’s a blast.
@Razer @Rpg-lover Animal Crossing is to Sims as Pilot Wings is to Flight Simulator.
Comparing the two experiences is unfair and not the least bit accurate, as their experiences are entirely different. In fact, the comparison doesn't hold up at all.
The latter is arguably more fun and, in the case of Animal Crossing, more relaxing. You don't have the annoying "real-life" physical mechanics that boggle down the Sims games. More zen, I suppose, is the best way to describe it. More fun things to do. More customization on your town (let's not mention the terrible Sims Free-Play game here).
If you experience it for yourself, you'll discover quickly that it's nothing like the Sims and just how far off the comparison is.
Case in point, I personally hate the Sims games but I absolutely love Animal Crossing.
I think Nintendo is listening to their fans. I think Nintendo Employees are reading Nintendo life and all other sites comments. I think Nintendo realizes in order to remain amazing beyond the games they make they must listen to our wants. I think they are doing just that because the switch is here to stay for a long while.
It sounds to me like Nintendo are listening to fans and trying to find a solution that will satisfy both them and us. I suspect this is due to their new, younger leadership. A few years ago they would’ve just released the game with their typical take-it-or-leave-it attitude.
Is Nintendo still only allowing online subscribers to transfer from one switch to another or can non subscribers transfer now too?
@Likethepear
That requires them to pull the leash on this clearly authoritarian wackjob dev who forbid cloud saves 2 and had lots of other horrible annoying ideas designed around inconveniencing the player and limited freedom. Nintendo could have prevented all of this if they never had the choice for devs to disable cloud saves.
So much flip flopping ! I hope you two above me are right and that they are actually listening..
@Antraxx777 lol if it works it works
Pleased this seems to be sorted but baffled by all of the seemingly unnecessary grief Ninth brought on themselves over this.
Seems a lot just to potentially stop item duplication in a game where it gives no real competitive advantage (unlike e.g. Pokemon which also unhappy with but understand a bit more.)
Will now out my pre-order in.
@brettsynthetic they have take a look at super smash bros DLC.
Can I share my cartridge with friends?
@nintendork64 lol their in exactly the same genre of games... Sorry man it very much is like the Sims. Maybe you could say Stardew Vally too but the premise is really the same.
Start off with nothing and build up your own little island/town/village - essentially a strategy type game.
Now 90% of people i know who love this game also enjoyed both Sims and Stardew...
I mean... why do you think it's always compared with The Sims...
@Old-Red I didnt know free updates was microtransactions.so how is it full of them when they are free?btw they stated free updates during the direct and if there was microtransactions it would have said that.but at the same time microtransactions came up from a fake leak.. what's more funny is everybody believes leaks lol until Nintendo says there are microtransactions there aint.
