Following on from last week's classification in South Korea, the upcoming Switch release Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition has now received an ESRB rating in North America. According to Japanese Nintendo, this information was discovered on Nintendo's webpage for the game.
Like previous entries in the Xenoblade Chronicles series, the Definitive Edition has been rated T for Teen:
Blood, Mild Language, Partial Nudity, Use of Alcohol and Tobacco, Violence
While a rating might not be considered very exciting news, it often means an official release date announcement is the way.
As for when this game could be released, there's been rumour since January of a May launch. This stems from a Danish retailer that updated its Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition page to 29th May. As previously noted, if this is true, it would follow on from the Trials of Mana remake in April.

Durect this week.. i can feel it.
Still need to finish X and 2 but this game is where the Magic is at.
Still havent played a Xenoblade game, can't wait!
Still haven’t started XC2, but I’m kinda set on waiting for this now. Can’t wait... please don’t be blurry in handheld.
Partial nudity what? I've put hundreds of hours into the original, what are they calling nudity? Even partial? Is it still 1917 where showing your belly button is considered partial nudity?
Maybe that was there on the original rating too, I just never thought to look.
@The_Pixel_King
If you haven't played XC2 yet, you should definitely wait and play XC1 first. While they say they're completely independent games, that was a bit of a white lie on Nintendo's part. XC1 does inform certain things that happen in XC2.
"Can we get a release date now?"
My sentiments exactly. This is one of my most anticipated games for this year. I've never played the original or the N3DS port, so this will be new to me.
@Dezzy Good to know. I have XC2 backlogged, but I have no problem waiting to play it.
@Heavyarms55 Yes, actually.
It's in the original Wii description, and I generally understand "partial nudity" to mean bare midriff.
@OrangeSoda @Heavyarms55 : The ESRB's Wii/Wii U/3DS listings for Xenoblade Chronicles all cite "partial nudity".
The rating summary states:
"A handful of female characters are dressed in skimpy outfits that reveal large amounts of jiggling cleavage, and one cutscene depicts a male character's exposed buttocks."
These games aren't for me but it's a good exclusive for the Switch to get. I wonder if it will be an independent announcement about the release date or perhaps part of a March Direct? I know....I know....I shouldn't say the 'D' word lol.
@OrangeSoda Wow... That's... antiquated, but fair enough I suppose.
@illmatic20xx "I'm really feeling it!"
I'm really feeling the Nintendo Direct presentation now. It's this week or next, I can feel it!
@KingBowser
I think you meant to say that you're in fact "really" feeling it.
While I appreciated the Animal Crossing Direct, they needed to have a big Direct to detail other games coming this year. Hopefully this all but confirms a full on Direct is coming in the next couple weeks and this is one of the games in it finally getting a release date.
@Heavyarms55 You can strip the characters down to their underwear. Just remove all armor.
@Kanbei one of the best series out there.
@Angelic_Lapras_King Oh I'm well aware. But so what? That's not nude, that's nothing worse than swimwear. You see more nudity on store shelves in Target - Or you used to back when I was in high school over a decade ago. It's been a long time since I've been to a US department store.
I've started and stopped this game so many times i wonder if I'll ever finish it. I get why it's so popular and i really would like to give it a playthrough but man all the sidequests and junk just overwhelms me! Same thing happened with breath of the wild. Curse the completionist in me! I feel like i ain't really completing a game unless i do everything and holy crap there's alot to do!
Never played it on Wii. Loved Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Can't wait!
One of the ... if not THE best RPG of that decade.
@Heavyarms55 I mean if someone's getting picky I'm glad it's the ESRB. Rather have them put that in the back of the box than have another outcry about how children are exposed to sex and violence in videogames.
@fafonio Certainly my favorite since Chrono Trigger
@PcTV I don't mean it's a problem, I just don't understand what they're talking about. Exposed midriff means partial nudity? Maybe in Saudi Arabia or the 1920s.
@Heavyarms55 There's some fairly revealing clothing in the game. I think Sharla might have the most revealing ones.
Might seem tame in a world with Senran Kagura or even Xenoblade Chronicles X.
But it warrants the label either way imo.
@PcTV I really don't agree. There are no exposed nipples or genitals. There is no nudity. There is nothing you wont see at any beach or pool in any developed nation in 2020.
Ultimately it doesn't matter though.
@Heavyarms55 That'd be full nudity, wouldn't it?
I find your direct association of the acceptance of nudity and how developed a country is, a little funny, I gotta say.
Seems it's almost Reyn time.
@Zeldafan79 I often cite my 75+ hours on 3DS to date that, from what I hear, haven't even brought me anywhere to half the plot yet, so I know the feeling. But while I try to do as much as I can on first playthrough as well, NG+ is pretty much obligatory for a completionist here anyway - there are branching quests whose alternate outcomes unlock separate and thus mutually exclusive quests. Same goes for XC2 where the NG+ reportedly gives access to several rare blades (with their own affinity charts to complete) that you can't get the first time around.
@Zeldafan79
I’m a completionist too and it can get in the way for some games.
I’d recommend separating in your mind the story as the first thing to complete, and the side quests strictly for postgame if possible. That way in your mind you’re still telling yourself you are completing it. Just in a different order that isn’t overwhelming.
Xenoblade 1 sidequests are more for character development on the side and experience I believe, rather than for special items and stuff.
I think a May release date would be the perfect time for it.
All I need is a release date, very excited for this!
I can't wait. I kind of have to beat the second one first. I wonder how well it will translate to the Switch? I am a little bit uncertain about that. I played Monster Hunter Generations for a couple of hundred hours, they really didn't improve that game when it translated from the 3DS, I know they are different companies, still, there's doubt.
Aaaand this means it's definitely coming soon. I've not long been on Switch and bought around a dozen physical games with Xenoblade 2 among them. I've not played it yet (I'm too enthralled with BOTW), this way I can play them in order...
If only Nintendo had some sort of way to give news about upcoming games which there is a lack of information for! Seriously direct now please!
cant wait to replay this on my switch.
@Heavyarms55 ESRB definition of partial nudity never implied actual nudity, it always just meant that the game exposes the whole body except something that could considered nudity.
Also more importantly, this means that Dickson still smokes, so that one scene will still be a masterpiece.
I'm so ready to play this game
@Charinzardon I agree completely on the Dickson thing. Changing that scene would be a travesty!
