Nintendo UK yesterday rolled out an overview trailer for the upcoming Switch release Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE featuring English subtitles.
If you missed the drama in October, it was discovered that the upcoming worldwide re-release of this game would be based on the toned-down western version of the Wii U original, featuring costume and age changes.
This newer version will also add new costumes, songs, scenarios, and dungeons. If you didn't play the original release, the overview trailer above should give you a better idea of what to expect and help you decide if this stylish RPG which combines the Shin Megami Tensei and Fire Emblem series would be your kind of game.
Alternatively, you can read our review of the original game, which was released on the Wii U in 2016.
Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE can be pre-ordered right now from the Nintendo website for £49.99 / $59.99 and will be released on the Switch on 17th January 2020.

Take it from someone that has played the original. This is by no means a bad game. It's just had lots of bad luck...
@JR150 Though it seems a bit "very Japanese", I'm definitely intersted in this title. Will pick it up in January.
Great little game that I enjoyed very much, that just had a lot of bad luck back when it first released. Great songs too, got a lot of them on my usb stick for listening to while driving ^_^
Since the Dream Catcher song heavily references Calamari Inkantation from Splatoon, I'm holding out hope for one of the new songs to reference Fly Octo, Fly (I just want a full version of that song with lyrics that I can actually pronounce).
Though there are no characters in the game that match Pearl and Marina so the odds of that are very low v.v
Yeah it's a great game and I don't even like all the idol stuff.
The entire announcement of this game was just a hot mess. They made people expect a SMT+FE crossover game and after a long radio silence this happy go lucky idol game is shown. On top of that of course the whole altering of content for non-japanese audiences made everything spiral out of control.
Some people like to complain that this game did not get a dub but I think the decision to not dub it is not just a matter of money or finding VA who can sing. The game is all about Japan/Tokyo and the whole idol thing is very specific to it.
Like with Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan, you simply can't localise it without changing the entire game. That's why it became a totally different game over here (Elite Beat Agents).
@Quarth
It really is. Taught me a lot about Japanese culture and the entertainment industry. The combat, addictive and rewarding. The story, cheesy, yet a nice retelling of the original Fire Emblem. The characters all wonderful in their own ways. Itsuki is a snarky, yet dense protagonist. Touma is the overachieving best friend. Tsubasa is the lovable, yet eccentric talent. (Ellie is best girl however.)
While the troubling production and controversial changes still plague this game, it is worth a look if you enjoy SMT, Persona, Fire Emblem, anime games, or just want something new and fresh from Nintendo. People who don't wish to buy it have every right to speak their wallets. But I just want those of us who genuinely want to enjoy this game to also be heard. And I will continue to do so no matter what.
But anyways, yes. It's a good game. I hope you have fun with it!
Still not super clear on this game, but I like how unique it looks. I’m not interested at full price as neither of those series interest me, but may give it a go when it gets much lower on sale.
This is looking fokin CRISP
@Joekun
It's a turn based RPG focused on the idol industry. I picked it up on a whim on the Wii U without having played any SMT game or Fire Emblem game prior and it was a really fun time from beginning to end. It's not perfect by any means, but for what it does do, it does a decent job of painting a picture of the Japanese industry it represents. The combat is fun, fluid, and rewarding when you understand how to hit weaknesses and get combos. The characters are cute and funny. The dungeons are really puzzling. And there's no need to have any sort of knowledge of either franchise. I jumped in out of nowhere and enjoyed it a lot and you can too!
@JR150 Thanks. I like Japanese culture (used to live and study there), and would’ve been pretty into this years ago. I’ll probably grab it when it’s cheap.
Uncensore patch is already in the works bois.
Got it on the Wii U; it’s a great game. Looking forward to playing through it again next month in the Switch!
I like that they are doing this one a favor and giving it a second chance. Here’s hoping for Super Mario 3D World Deluxe and TLoZ TP and WW HD versions.
I do like the battle music in this game.
@Zach777
Xenoblade X: demands that you join BLADE
But glad to see someone else willing to give TMS a chance. Hopefully Atlus will improve on this crossover idea with future installments.
Played it on Wii U. It's a decent jrpg, although on the Switch it has a lot more competition and may struggle to stand out. Worth a punt if your into the genre but I won't be double dipping on this one.
This game is amazing, even if the trailer is a bit too spoiler happy, the bits showed were pretty much taken from the whole thing XD
At least they fixed the last part and clarified the new characters for the encore only join in the session/combo... which is a shame, full new party members were all I needed to buy this game again.
Honestly this will be a great game for those that skipped it on Wii U, but ironically it feels like they didn't add much to make it worth of an "Encore" for those that already played the original version.
@JR150 Yeah being a Wii U exclusive was it's biggest problem.
@Steelhead
I wouldn't be so hasty to say that. There are no other Atlus RPGs on this system (until SMT V comes), and no other JRPGs that take place in modern Tokyo with entertainment idols. If anything, it stands out even more now due to be on much more successful hardware. I wouldn't worry.
(And before anyone mentions P5 Scramble. That isn't a traditional Atlus RPG. It's a Warriors game with RPG elements.)
The gameplay for this in battles was probably the highlight for me on Wii U. I loved the SMT style battle system with weapons triangle from Fire Emblem and the whole session link mechanic, ad-lib mechanic, just made it fun to play. The story on the other hand I did not find to be that great; it is just enough to pull you along, but not enough for me to really care about the characters.
I will probably double dip, but I will wait until it gets cheap as their does not appear to be much change between the Wii U version and Switch version.
Hearing "Feel" again in the opening of the video just makes me so happy. One of my favorite songs from the original.
@JR150 I agree with this. Got the Wii U original last Christmas and it pretty much became one of my favorite Wii U games. Very much looking forward to the Switch release come January 17th.
I’m excited to replay this one!
I was convinced they would put in elements from Three Houses in this one... it seemed to make so much sense
Already have the game for Wii U so I probably won't double dip but we'll see. For those who haven't I recommend playing if you love JRPGs. The game gets a bad rep for the censorship fiasco but that doesn't ruin the game play or the vibrant look of the game.
I'm currently playing this for the first time on the Wii U and its a lot of fun. I hope it does well on the switch. It deserves a bigger following.
I’m still yet to play this on the Wii u. Backlog
@JR150
Yes of course! I totally forgot Xenoblade Chronicles X!!!! Thanks
Despite what the writer says here, the Fire Emblem connection is dubious. About five characters from the franchise show up (in masks) and help you in battle, and you spend a bunch of time talking to Tiki. That's pretty much it. It's still a very fun game, but if you're picking it up solely for the FE connection you're going to be very disappointed.
Heck this is worth it for the music alone! Just such a fun and warm game all the way around. It may not be a TGA candidate, but it's an unforgettable time of pure fun, and the characters stick with you forever!
@WiiHawk A handful of characters are "masked/shadowed" but Tiki is a major role, Anna runs the shop, level up screens/sounds are all FE, the battle system respects the weapons triangle (something even 3 Houses doesn't do ), and of course there's the major plot being more or less FE 1 retold.
I agree it's not a full-on FE heavy game, but there's also a lot of pieces that are tied to FE on both large and small scale. It's not what everyone expected, but it's also more tied to FE than it appears on the surface.
Bad luck = censorship = no buy
This is basically a SMT/Persona game with the demons and personas replaced by amnesiac Fire Emblem characters. Like most SMT/Persona games it's a simplistic ROG with a great story.
I might double dip especially if they make a special edition that comes with a soundtrack CD
I've researched this game and like its premise, setting, and the general unique wackiness it exudes. Yes some of the localization changes are weird, but that's not enough to scare me off. I'm torn about whether to get it on Wii U (as it's cheaper) or grabbing the Switch version as I'm not sure there's enough added to justify the higher price point in my case.
@Tyranexx I'd say if you're just wanting to play it and have your Wii U handy, nab that as I think you can get it new under $20. By the looks of it, not sure if the new content is worth the $40, but it's a fun game that's worth a try.
My main issue with the Wii u version (and what may drive me to get this after a while) is the need to have the Wii u gamepad on that version. You can use the pro controller, but a lot of interactions and maps are only on there. Made it to where I usually had the gamepad docked in front of me while I used pro controller.
I'll just wait for the uncensored mod.
NOTE: This is by no means me telling people that it sucks or not to get it. In fact people should get it because it is a good game. I just don't enjoy knowing that I will be playing a censor version
@FlyingShoeMan Thanks for the reply. My Wii U is still hooked up (still do occasional Virtual Console runs) and I don't mind juggling the GamePad and Pro Controller. Heck, I don't even mind playing on just the GamePad on occasion. TMS #FE is currently about $19 on Amazon US, so I might just order it later.
@JR150 Yeah, the NX rumours scene really gave Wii U games released after Super Mario Maker bad luck. This, XCX and Color Splash were hit the most.
@JR150 Thanks for the recommendation! I will absolutely check it out. Have a nice weekend!
PoKeMoN Is A BaD GaMe! WhY Is iT $60?
yet you nintendrones will buy this again for $60 like a drop of a hat!!!!! you fans make me sick let people enjoy this you can do whatever you want dont buy it but dont complain when you arent getting it we have enough people in the pokemon fandom doing this
@Shiro28 thanks for sharing an uncensored version isnt coming out.....weeb people stay mad
@Zeuseksy no one cares
I hope new players get to enjoy this game like I did back in 2016. It's a real winner, especially for those who don't own a PS4 to play Persona 5.
censored garbage I hope Tokyo Mirage Sessions bombs yet again on Switch
I hope they add a uncesorship option people will be mad but I'm personally willing to pay up to $10.00 U.S dollars for something like that.Other than that I hope this somehow turns out not to be censored and for that content to still exist .I'm an adult and if I want to be a scumbag and enjoy "fictional" charachters* written by adults,drawn by adults,voiced by adult.Then I don't otherwise understand why the forces of people who don't have to expierence that content themseves have to interfere with that.Also Atlus have some balls or whoever is making this game and stop pretending it's not going to be a relativley niche amount of people who buy this game anyways.Although part of me wonders if they partially did this to save budget money somehow.Who knows but let perverts be perverts if that's what yor concerened about and understand the kids that maybe you're trying to sell this game too don't exist.Exceptions to the rule are not who you should be catering to Atlas* who I know is reading this comment.So please do the right thing.Also skin showing can be more about beuty than pervesion so think of it that way since it 90 percent leans towards that appeal anyways.askbasoihadwihoqwiufaeijowqijefpjo
@Quarth It's a fire emblem and smt cross over about idols. It's arguably the most japanese
@GAMER1984dude This argument makes less sense with this game given literally almost no one played. It's honestly a little bit of a weird one to port. It didn't flop, really, but even for the Wii u it didn't do great. It's new to basically everyone. I mean, I'm obsessed with games and I never heard of it until the direct
@Xansies
As a person who played the original, there was a lot of money that went into this game from an art direction standpoint, vocal standpoint, and story standpoint. A lot of money that was lost as well. Sure, Atlus isn't hurting for money but this is the Megami Tensei team's only major console release until SMT V. The Persona team meanwhile has nothing to fear with all their spin-offs and re-releases. When you consider Atlus ports their own games, it's not that weird, honestly.
Unlike Xenoblade X, for example, since Xenoblade 2 did so well and they're bringing Xenoblade 1 to HD, there's little financially to gain from porting Xenoblade X. Monolith has made plenty of money from their work. Not saying that I don't want an X port, but from a monetary business perspective, TMS deserved it first.
@Xansies only reason you never heard of it is you probably didnt have a wii u. great system with a library just didnt sell well
