As we get closer to the end of another decade, NPD video game industry analyst Mat Piscatella has been sharing interesting data about software and hardware trends. His latest tweet highlights the top five games that made "the most" appearances on the NPD Group's top 20 best-selling video games chart within the US over the past decade.
As you might have already guessed, Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto V takes out the top spot, with a total of 74 appearances. Coming in at second place is Mojang's Minecraft game with 73 appearances. After this is Mario Kart 8 with 37 appearances, followed by the new Rainbow Six game with 34 appearances. And in fifth place is Nintendo's massive open-world adventure, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
As noted by Mat, there's still technically a month of the decade to go. He intends to share an update when the December data arrives.

Kinda crazy when you realize Zelda is the only non-online capable game on the list. In addition, it came out near the end of the decade and still made it on here even though it's an exclusive title. Of course GTA V is at the top. It came out at the beginning of the decade and it's on several platforms.
Basically, it's impressive as heck what Zelda accomplished.
@JR150 Couldn't say it better. I wonder what the sequel to BotW will accomplish? I get goosebumps just thinking about it.
I am so happy for MK and Zelda!
@aznable Based on trends it stands to reason that BoTW 2 will sell less than the original. When two or more Zelda games share a console together the second one always sells less than the first. Those being Zelda II, Majora's Mask, Skyward Sword, Four Swords Adventures, and Spirit Tracks. Heck, every Zelda game released on 3DS sold less than the previous one.
Wait a second, Rainbow Six is one of the best selling games of the decade?
@JR150 You really put the figures into good context, especially the fact that GTA has had a significantly longer period to be on the charts than BoTW, but its achievement is also significant that it has managed to keep the sales momentum going on forever.
What the hell is the NPD and why do they have multiple charts?
@Priceless_Spork American retail analysts. The data is based on US sales not anywhere else. Despite the mention in the article and the tags within the article page - I think the title is misleading and should clearly state what region it covers.
Skyward Sword charted in the Top 20 in the US for like 3-4 months before it disappeared off the charts and never returned.
It's crazy how much the franchise has turned around.
@Chayshirin I was surprised as well!
Now is that MK8 or MK8Deluxe or both? Technically they are different games so I’m assuming it’s Deluxe only which is mightily impressive.
@JR150 BoTW is also the only game that's not multiplayer on that list, very impressive indeed.
@JR150 Zelda’s merit is exceptional. It’s the Game of the decade, by far.
@JR150 non online more like platform exclusive to Nintendo is the impressive
@westman98 yeah it only sold 3 million how sad...
What is TCR6:S?
I wish people weren’t too lazy to just spell things out. Oh, sorry. What I should have said was: IWPWTLTJSTO.
@Hordak apparently TCR6:S is Tom Clancy's Rainbow 6: Siege, i had to Google it, i had no idea.
So yes BotW(sorry) is the only game listed that is a console exclusive as well as the only game without online play, wow.
Liam, for context, which kind of decade? Phonetic, deck-aid or d'caid ? How is it said in Australia? I'm joking and respectfully curious. I've never been to Australia. (I thought Liam was in Australia)
@Hordak only so many characters available in a tweet
GTA V was also available on PS3 and XBox 360 then re-released with enhancements for current gen consoles. So amazing that Breath of the Wild is on there, great work Nintendo.
@westman98 That's so sad about Skyward Sword, I didn't know that. Hope it gets another chance some day it's a great game.
@aznable 1 it will be huge but it wont sell more than botw thats for sure.
