Reflect on the Nintendo DS generation and you might remember the system exclusive Solatorobo: Red the Hunter. The action-RPG by CyberConnect2 was well-received across all regions but only sold around 100,000 copies worldwide.
Is there a chance of the game ever getting a remake, though? CyberConnect2 boss Hiroshi Matsuyama was recently asked about this at a Q&A not long ago and said he was open to the idea. The main issue would be working out how to operate the game on a newer system that may not necessarily support the touch panel design of Solatorobo. Here's the transcript, courtesy of Nintendo Everything:
Of course, the possibility is there. As you know, Solaroboto was a game exclusively released on Nintendo DS. You all remember, right? Nintendo DS had two screens. The top screen was the play screen and the bottom one a touch panel.
On the operational side of things, it will be quite hard to port the game without a hardware that supports this system. It is possible to rebuild the touch panel system of Solatorobo, and integrate the bottom screen into a single screen, but would call for a complete remake. I feel that this would bring its own set of difficulties.
Matsuyama went onto state how "a lot" at CyberConnect2 would like to re-release the company's games made during the DS and 3DS generation, but at the same time would be more likely to "start over from scratch" in the case of Solatorobo.
I personally think that, not only for our title Solatorobo, but also for a lot of other games that were made for the Nintendo DS and 3DS, a lot of us would like to re-release, whether just a downloadable version, an HD remastered version of these games, so that our current customers could play with our past properties, but at this time, I don’t think the industry is aiming for that goal yet. If we were to remake Solatorobo, we would start over from scratch.

I think they could do it a lot better if they had the right resources. The game's plot and such was fun but the gameplay wasn't the best.
It was a good game until my copy kept freezing, but I would be interested in a remake of this and Tail Concerto which I never played.
That would be a cool one, it was a great game that released at an awkward time. Hopefully it would get the recognition it deserves.
Ironically my 10 year-old son dug through some of my old DS games, fixated on this one, and has barely put it down the last 2-3 weeks, even well after beating it. Now he talks about part combinations and mechs all the time (instead of Smash Bros. and Pokemon). A testament to the classic gameplay and timeless appeal of this little DS gem.
I would love to have this remade. The game's too damn rare to get my hands on.
Never heard of it. Would like some more 3ds releases
I love the original Tail Concerto game, but I never played any of the “spiritual successors,” or whatever this is considered. Tail Concerto rules.
Never heard of it but I’m definitely interested!!! Would love to see this come to switch after reading all the comments above, seems like I missed out but glad there’s still a chance (:
As much as I hate to admit it, this game is the primary reason I bought an R4 card for my DS some years ago. It's just so darn hard to find a copy, and when you do it costs more than the R4 card.
By the time I heard of the game, it cost way more than retail for a used copy. I'd certainly check it out if it ever got a rerelease.
Man, I can remember picking this up years ago by chance just because of the anthro characters. We only got 1 or 2 shipped here, and I got one that came with the soundtrack. Thank goodness I did because I adore the soundtrack just as much as I loved the characters.
It's also one of the only games I've played where the very few spoken pieces of dialogue (ex: the side quest lady) are in French and not English, Japanese, or a "jibberish" language (ex: Sims, Zelda).
I'd recommend it. It's a bit clunky but I can tell the devs put a lot of care into it.
Just require two switches. You can now re release every ds, 3ds, and wii u game.
I actually bought this about a month ago and have yet to play it. I'd rather play a switch remake and not play the ds one, mainly because it's expensive. Heh
That would be great! A bit more replayability or at least the ability to replay (😝) past missions would be nice too.
I was one of those fortunate enough to be able to pick this one up within launch week, (with the bonus CD at that!) and it's shaped up to be one of my top 5 DS games. I would absolutely buy it again on Switch if given the opportunity.
@Seanmyster6
I snagged mine when I was transferring my launch 3DS info to my new 3DSXL while at gamestop and saw it sitting on the shelf next to me. Yoink!
I would prefer a remake to Tail Concerto first. That was one of the few PSX games I purchased 2-3 times before ultimately selling it again.
I really enjoyed this game. However the dialogue just drags on, and on, and on in some parts of the game. Maybe if they clean the dialogue up a bit I'd play it again.
SolaToRobo was a... weird amazing game.
I remember loving it, but I remember nothing of the actual gameplay, I have like zero memories and just a warm feeling of having played a very good game when I think about it.
Loved this game! Not sure I would buy a remake but I never got to any other games in the series so would probably get those
@Roam85 Or just use the Switch in TATE Mode which could easily emulate both the top and bottom screens with no problem as the entire Switch is just one big touch screen similar to the 2DS anyways.
I loved this game! Still got it. Would love a remake.
I have Solatorobo but never got around to playing it, heard that the play style changes around half way through the game.
Solatorobo 2 please!!!
Mhhh always wanted to try this along Sands of Destruciton .... always thought that plot line had potential.....
Does anyone here played that game? I think there was an anime about it.... I guess its existence proves the quality of the storyline
I always thought this game’s art was held back by the DS, so a full remake in HD could look absolutely amazing. Some sort of a hard mode (or general difficulty rebalancing) would be great too
I'll be honest, ever since the game came out on DS I've been interested in picking it up to this day.. but for some reason I just never pulled the trigger on it. If this remake does come to be I will definitely make sure to pick it up (provided it's still a quality product of course).
A long shot. They should just remaster to Switch cart and gain benefit from that.
Have small dev teams ever considered kickstarter campaigns? Base goal could be a simple port, with stretch goals like remaster > remake > extra ports, etc.
@BoyfriendOfDeath Yeah, it was on a $1 reserve on Trademe (bidding site in NZ) at one point and it rocketed up to over $100. I never realised how rare it was.
Solatorobo was great, but I rather would see a sequel or Tail concerto. That's a game we Nintendo-players didn't get.
@TobiasAmaranth the gameplay wasn't that big of an issue for me. the story itself was far more important and appealing then how it played. this is the type of game where the main point lies more in the story then the gameplay.
