Nintendo ended its E3 2019 show with a bang earlier this year, revealing that a sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was in development. We were treated to a teasing new trailer (which you can view above), showing Link and Zelda in a spot of bother. It's so creepy and mysterious - we love it.
Anyway, new images have now surfaced which give us just a small glimpse behind the scenes, with initial concept art being shown alongside a motion capture actor. We also see Link's animation being worked on inside Maya - a 3D CG application - before being shown the final result. The images come from Nintendo's Japanese recruitment website.
At this early stage, there's still a lot we don't know about the new game, but we did share a full breakdown of that initial trailer a little while ago. In that breakdown, we also list every single thing we've learnt about the Breath of the Wild sequel so far - such as the fact that it's being directed by Hidemaro Fujibayashi and that the game will be darker in tone than the original. Make sure to check it out if you're interested.
Are you excited for Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 - or whatever it ends up being called? Is that a silly question? Tell us below.

Umm... What is even happening in the top-left image?
Cant wait for this game
@KayFiOS
A vibe check.
New trailer Game Awards I bet. 2020 release. Change my mind 😂😂😂
@KayFiOS there are three erections? And a smiley face.
@KayFiOS
He is learning to do the Rasengan.
Nice little insight here. I love the sound of BoTW2 having a darker tone and I can’t wait to jump into some dark mysterious dungeons this time!!
@Thorthegreat12 I give it 1:4 chances of happening. Not out of the realm of possibility but still very unlikely. As much as I'd love to see it (and I would absolutely love to see it), console Zelda games are always slow to be released and they trickle the trailers out really slowly. If it comes out in 2020, it'll be holiday at the earliest. I'd still put my money on 2021 though. It takes time to make games that are as good as Zelda almost always is.
@CarpeDiem Anything but the twilight realm, kinda don't like that place.
@able_to_think Unlike many Zelda games, this one is reusing a lot of content. I reckon early 2021 is the latest it could arrive.
@Thorthegreat12 Late 2020 seems like a safe bet, three-and-a-half years for a sequel that reuses a ton of assets is very doable. Kojima made Death Stranding in just three years, so a Zelda sequel in 3.5 years is definitely possible.
And I don't see what else they're going to do next holiday. Unless they haven't revealed it yet, but in that case it would be weird if a new January/February reveal comes out before the already announced Zelda game.
I hope they double up on the amount of main dungeon areas. The shrines were fun but Id like to see more unique dungeons aka OOT. Dont get wrong, BOTW was great.
It will be delayed and released on the Switch 2
@KayFiOS it's a storyboard. basically, a drawing to decide what to "shoot" before all the coding and motion capture and programming (also used in movies for the same reason. it's cheaper to draw than just to wander with your camera, lightning settings and actors around aimlessly)
@dux That still doesn't explain why Link is standing there stark naked with the Master Sword standing tall and proud.
Is Link losing his Courage part of the Triforce?!
@KayFiOS Each photo represents a different step, the first one is a storyboard which gives devs a general layout for character modeling, which camera angles to use, how the backgrounds will look like, etc because is way more convenient than just messing around with the game's engine. Second one is motion capture, not a lot to say about that one, the third is the character modeling using mocap as a base and the fourth picture is the finalized trailer itself
And here I am still waiting for that Zelda WW/TP remaster for Switch. Still haven't played BOTW because of that.
I do have Witcher 3 though (sealed/unplayed🤗, love my Switch, the biggest unplayed backlog I'd ever had then with former condoles/handhelds)
A holiday 2020 would be awesome. But just as happy if they do 03/03/2021 as 4 years from launch date.
There is so much in my backlog and want list on the switch that I am fully entertained.
This game actually looks pretty good but the thing is it takes place in the same exact Open area that the first one did Hope they change enough to make the game feel new and improved.
@KayFiOS the "master sword" (AKA penis, no need to be coy) is just his tunic blowing with the magic's wind. he's not "naked", it's just a general flesh colour for a storyboard, no further details are needed. he could be magenta, it wouldn't make a difference. I'm gay and I'm not seeing dicks on every mundane thing, you people startle me sometimes
@Thorthegreat12 I'm with you man, I'm getting my hopes up stupidly high, and have no regard for the crushing disappointment I may feel afterwards 😂
Darker is good. It helped make Majora's Mask the classic it is.
@dux I don't see dicks on everything either, normally, but that flesh color made it really hard for me to think it could be anything else, especially at 4 AM, when my brain is practically mush until I get my coffee.
@Thorthegreat12 So did Majora's Mask and it took way longer to make then they planned. Plus they made it sound in interviews like they were taking their time making BotW2. I hope I'm wrong because I really want to play it but as a lifelong Zelda fan, I've learned to expect the next big mainline game to take forever and suffer multiple delays.
Motion capture? Is that new for the series?
@able_to_think I mean sure but the development for Majora’s Mask was only one year (checked my Hyrule Historia book for that, it’s also in several other interviews).
@Sanangelo89 You have not played BOTW because you are waiting for a remaster of WW/TP? Uh... I hope that that is at least either/or and not both. One Zelda fan to another, you are REALLY missing out. It's a very well deserved GOTY.
Also, those games have not even been confirmed to be in existence for Switch.
Nice. Normally you never see those things regarding Nintendo games. Nintendo always keeps those things to their chest.
@the4seer I know I am missing out. It's not that i will never play it, but after i have finished WW and TP not anytime sooner will I play BOTW. Simple as that, it's not like it will become less fun playing it years later😅.
You have no idea how i love all the ports also from the PS360WII era because i didnt own a consoles sinds GC/PS2, only PSP and 3/DS.
