It might not seem like it, but earlier this month, Axiom Verge 2 was officially revealed for the Switch during Nintendo's Indie World Showcase. As explained by the title, it's a sequel to the original game released on the eShop in 2017.
While Axiom Verge has been compared to the Metroid series in the past, the sequel has also been influenced by The Legend of Zelda series. This was revealed by the game's creator Tom Happ during an interview with Nintendo Enthusiast recently:
I think I’m pretty much always digesting every game I’ve ever played and using them to flavor my work in some way, but in Axiom Verge 2 there is a distinctly heavier Zelda influence. Also, the newer Prey has been very influential to me, as well as the modern Tomb Raider games, Horizon: Zero Dawn, and Shadow of the Colossus.
Apart from Zelda, Tom has also drawn on games like Tomb Raider, Horizon Zero Dawn and even Shadow of the Colossus over the sequel's four-year development cycle.

So the first game isn't anything like this?
All good influences for sure. This is exciting since I’ve really enjoyed the first one. The man is quite talented.
I'm playing thru the 1st game now and I'm excited to see how he implements zelda into it.
Looking forward to this! Probably day 1 purchase.
Any pre-order discounts?
Axiom Verge is definitely one of the best Metroidvanias ever made, and I love the Zelda series...so this is good news.
There’s something about the art/design of this second one that makes me kind of uneasy. It’s almost like Blaster Master for NES was great and then that new one came out for Genesis and it was like ... weird. I get kind of the same vibe here, maybe it’s the blue logo, I’m not sure! Anyway, because I loved the first one dearly, and I totally trust Tom, I have faith I’ll enjoy it, no doubt. But yeah there’s something weird about this second one... the color palette? I think that’s part of it. Anyway, looking forward to this one coming out!
They need to hire him to help direct the next Metroid.
@Kalmaro The first game is Metroid 1.5. Graphics are better but it felt like Metroid down to a tee. Visually it's more like the first game but borrows a lot from Super.
I'm replaying the first game for the 3rd time right now. Bought it on PS4 and Switch. I absolutely love it and will buy the sequel day one.
@Spoony_Tech I see, it's interesting that they changed up the genre in a way, I'll get the first one on Switch.
Not so sure I like that. The Metroid cloniness is what made the original so good. Coupled with the pixel fart graphics which feel like a straight downgrade from the beatiful spriteart of the original I'm starting to get a bit nervous about this.
@Expa0 pixel fart, hehe
@KimBread I agree, it is one of the best Metroidvania, and I say this despite the fact that one pet triggered intense migraines for me... the game was that good that I powered through the migraines TWICE.
I loved axiom verge. Hope they keep the colour scheme of the original game. This trailer looks a bit washed out. Axiom verge was amazing though, so I'm sure Happ knows what he is doing.
Ok... screw it I'm making a leap of faith... I'll buy the first one now! I love Metroid type of game and was on the fence for Axiom Verge for quite some time but it always come to me going on the eshop and seeing a screenshot and choke... I just find the game artstyle so damn repulsive... It's something about the color palette or the texture or I don't know I just can't put my finger on it but it really bugs me. I love how 16-bit game looks and tolerate 8-bit games pretty ok (time hasn't been kind to 8-bit in my oppinion both with the look and gameplay) but this one is kind of a in-between, NES color palette on Snes graphics/texture and it bugs my brain I guess...
Hopefully it'll grow on me or the gameplay will make me forget it.
Edit : Ok went to the eShop and managed to press buy without bringing my eyes to the screenshot area ... now just have to not let it die in my backlog because of the look... I think I'll finish Fire Emblem and force myself to give it a try...
Inb4 people claim it's a rip-off somehow.
But for real, glad to see that this man's work ethic hasn't waned. I hope this game will reap way more profits than the first.
@Kalmaro thats some stinky pixels
I just recently started playing this one myself and I'm really digging it so far, lookin' forward to the sequel.
@NintendoByNature the first Axiom verge is one of many still un played in my backlog. Maybe I'll start that one right after I've finished Salt and Sanctuary.
@NotoriousWhiz I want salt and sanctuary on switch but its never in a sale. got it on ps4 but I'm not paying full price for it again. I find it strange it's never in any sales on Switch
Shut up and take my money!
The first one is a great game. I'll definitely be getting this. I wish the first one wasn't as short as it was, but that was my only complaint. Now there's more coming, can't wait!
@NotoriousWhiz it's been really good thus far. Feels exactly like metroid.
First one was really great, this is definitely going to be a day 1 for me.
It only makes sense that the best-selling physical Wii U game of 2019 gets a sequel.
Absolutely love the first game, will definitely buy the sequel. But I’m not sure about the change in art direction.
@NotoriousWhiz Salt and Sanctuary is pretty awesome!
Zelda has always been a co-influencer on the Metroidvania titles (and I'd argue that Zelda II -IS- a Metroidvania, and that Metroid Prime series and Skyward Sword make the distinctions between 3D Metroidvania and 3D Action Adventure very hard to find.
This is good news, certainly. Axiom Verge was awesome, but this will be an interesting way of remixing the game's genre slightly while giving us more of what we love!
Sounds good but I am not feeling it just yet. The old artstyle is soooo much better.
