The tech experts over at Digital Foundry recently looked at Luigi's Mansion 3 to see how it compared to its predecessors and found it to be a shocking technical feat for the Nintendo Switch.
In terms of the resolution, the game runs at 1980x1080 in docked mode during gameplay but can drop to 900p in cutscenes. In portable mode, the resolution runs at 1280x720 but again falls during cutscenes.
As for the frame rate, the game runs at a mostly stable 30fps in docked mode. To achieve 30fps in portable mode, some additional effects have been cut, resulting in a blurrier look overall. Despite this, Luigi's Mansion 3 is still one of the best-looking games available on the Switch.

They really did a good job with it. I think they should rerelease the two 3ds ones on the switch to capitalize on it.
@AG_Awesome I would be down for that big time. Probably my favorite franchise right now.
Made it to the 9th floor. Having a blast. I absolutely love the art design and environments. (I also want a Polterkitty...before the transformation, that is.) xD
Game looks amazing throughout
Game doesn't need to always be 1080p or have 60fps to look freakin' awesome. lol
Good job Level-5.
The game looks absolutely fantastic. One of the best looking games on the switch.
The Luigi's Mansion games always felt like technical showcases for me. Ever since the first one on the GameCube, it was an excellent showcase for what Nintendo's then-new console was capable of! On 3DS, both Dark Moon and the remake pushed 3DS to new heights with dynamic lighting, impressive animations and good attention to detail respectively. And now, Luigi's Mansion 3 represents something really close to an interactive CGI movie. It kinda feels like Resident Evil 2 in terms of graphical effects, and the interaction looks closer to something like Control.
The only thing I can criticize on the visuals are the questionable materials in some assets, but apart from that, everything is top-notch, especially for a 1080p Switch game.
It may feel like a culmination, but I heard from an interview that the directors are already thinking of Luigi's Mansion 4, and who knows how it will look or play
This game is absolutely stunningly gorgeous. The graphics, lighting, reflections, everything about it looks fantastic. Easily one of the Switch's best exclusives to date.
@Joeynator3000 Next Level Games*
Good graphics are barely even a secondary concern for me.
But that's not to say I don't enjoy it when a game looks nice!
Kudos to Next Level Games on developing an amazing game! With the sad news that the Mario & Luigi RPG’s may be no more, I’d like to see NLG take a go at creating one.
Also, this is just another reminder of how poorly developed Bloodstained is on Switch and why the recent update did nothing to drastically improve the quality of the game outside of some performance issues. It’s still an unacceptable game on Switch.
GRaphics and gameplay always makes for a better game. No way around it. No reason not to expect both.
Fantastic game, but I do miss humping furniture.
Personally I've utterly amazed but not only the graphics quality of Luigi's Mansion 3 but very much the art direction.
People aren't kidding when they say it looks like an animated movie because for all I can see it's visuals and art direction seem to have been designed with just as much care than many of the better animated movies out there.
@LucBL
John Lineman is the best because he actually has a lot of respect for the whole history of gaming, his DF Retro vids are fantastic but the other guys always sound condensing and only get excited over next gen bs, the types that cheerlead the yearly Call of Duty being called a “seismic shift” and want $599 consoles preferably with better models released more frequently.
The devs redeemed themselves after that horrendous Metroid Prime: Federation Force on 3DS.
Nintendo games finally looks like Pixar's Toy Story (on a portable no less!). The most under-rated feature of this game is HD rumble. The vacuuming, jumping explosion, VirtualBoy ringing, Boo sensors, etc all made good use of the vibrations.
@Aurumonado ...I thought Level 5-....eh, whatever, the Level guys. lol
Digital Foundry are the best in the industry : )
@LucBL I’m sorry you are the only one.
@CarpeDiem took me forever too. Made me think maybe I should have activated E. Gadd’s hints.
I would say this is the best looking game on Switch. Glad that it's not only that though. It's overall excellent and one of the greatest games on the system.
@LucBL if you think DF is the worst the video game industry has to offer, you must be very, very new around here.
Welcome, but buckle up if you think DF is bad... It's all down hill from there.
Game Freak, take notes.
@LucBL What is it specifically that you don't like about them? Even if a game isn't great in terms of FPS I usually find their videos fairly subjective and simply breaks down the graphical output. Never really found the videos overly judgemental and still feel like they give props to gameplay if the graphical output isn't great.
What a game. I remember thinking to myself playing LM2 with the 3D up to the Max how could a game get anymore charming - well here it is. Well done Next Level Games. Top marks from me. I hope we don’t have to wait so long for the next LM.
@Gwynbleidd I didn't mean to imply the gameplay in this game isn't good. This is about Digital Foundry had to say, and despite what the fanboys say, DF ONLY cares about how a game looks.
What I’m loving isn’t so much the raw graphics, which are great, but how immersive the game is as a result of basically everything in the world being movable and not feeling fixed down. Really feels great to start sucking and having pretty much everything in the room respond. It makes the game feel so much more dynamic and the world alive than most titles where half the map is fixed props that you can’t interact with.
@LucBL yep, it’s just you! DF is one of my favorite YouTube channels.
Hey when graphics in a nintendo game are great suddenly the game is immersive. I guess all xbox one x games are immersive based on that. But we can't say that since Nintendo games are rarely graphical showpiece while xbox one x that is a regular thing. Truthfully I bought the game because I haven't played Luigi mansion since GameCube days. It's good but I do agree I am hearing way more comments about the graphics and less about the actual gameplay. Nintendo gamers I guess turn into graphic wheres when it suits them. When Mario Kart 8 deluxe and smash came out at 1080p 60fps everyone mentioned how great the hardware was and how great the developing studio is. Now we keep getting 30fps and it's all quiet on the Western front.
@arekdougy What impresses me about Digital Foundry is how thorough they are.
@Gwynbleidd Luigi’s Mansion isn’t really a platformer.
It’s certainly a great looking game. Fantastic art design and nicely realised. The comparison to Pixar films is fair.
@Smigit
Great point. Yes it’s got nice graphics but the world itself is what immerses the player. Everything reacts how it should.
The game's gorgeous. Fluid animations and a charming art style make this one a stunner
Never played a Luigi's Mansion game before and picked this up yesterday. All I can say is, this is one of the best games i've ever played, absolutely love it!
@sixrings how old are you?
