If you want to get in shape and play video games at the same time, the active role-playing game Ring Fit Adventure might be worth investigating when it arrives on the Switch next week. In this upcoming release, players explore an expansive world while battling enemies and performing real-life fitness exercises with the Ring-Con and Leg Strap accessories.
The question is, is it actually any good? Our very own fitness guru Alex Olney recently had the chance to go hands-on with Nintendo's latest invention at a preview event in London and in the end was allowed to take it home. In the above video, you can find out his early impressions and get a better idea about how the Ring-Con works and how the game plays.

I'll never be able to play this in private because even my subconscious mind will be judging me for looking like an absolute tit while playing this.
But my waist is burgeoning for the first time in my life, so some physical activity might do me good.
Every generation of Nintendo hardware has something like this. I get why this is useful to people, but personally I'd rather run, run as fast as I can AWAY from this game, except that I always seem to get winded so easily...
I'm planning to buy it day one. My wife, 4 kids, and I got several years of use out of Wii Fit. This looks even better.
Can't wait to see Alex being all buffed in a couple of months xD
Like I said on the video comment section, I'd have to rearrange my entire living room to be able to play this without breaking something. Not everyone just has a bunch of open space in their house.
Can’t wait! I work from home — running and going to the gym are fine, but having some additional way to combine entertainment and movement into my day is most welcome.
I would love Love LOVE if Nintendo would use a smartphone app to tie your activity into a larger profile such as iOS Health or MyFitnessPal.
I watched one of the journalists from arstechnica playing this, and pre-ordered straight away. Looks loads of fun, and I need more exercise in my day!
So pleased to see accessibility functions for mobility/disability. That little reveal made my day
I'll see how this ages with people. Too often I will buy these things and only use them twice then it just takes up room in a closet.
I hated your review of Fitness Boxing where you just sat on the couch and wiggled the controllers. It didn‘t do any justice to the game (which I happen to like a lot). This time you made an effort, thanks.
Not sure I can be bothered now because my Switch Dock is upstairs and I'd have to bring it downstairs, hook it up to the TV and rearrange the living room before I can get started. Did like the idea at first but for me it doesn't feel practical, hope others enjoy it though.
I lived Wii Fit
And Wii Fit U
And Fitness Boxing!
This is gonna be great!
I was already hyped for this game and have already pre-ordered a set, but after watching Alex Olney's video about this game i am 2x as hype now! WOOO!! I am so pumped!! XD
@gdog good for you.
@Silly_G if youh are getting fat, this game won't help much.
@Grant007 You're literally doing a workout with this, between jogging and doing squats etc. Therefore you're burning calories, explain how it does not help much!
@PhatToad it's so lame that you'll probably use it twice and off to the closet it will go after a few weeks of sitting out. Plus it's not like an actual workout, moreso designed to get ou moving slightly. Spending $60 for a gym and trainer will have 100X lasting results while you'll be sick of this crummy game in less than a month.
As someone who could stand to lose some flab, this appeals. I wonder how much difference it could make? I’m guessing half hour a day would be better than doing nothing but slothing on the sofa
Like others say here, it could just end up being used twice and then clutter up a cupboard.
We shall see but it’s a potential purchase. Either way, I applaud the innovation.
does this not look tough for kids.
@grant007 you must not know how much trainers cost. Sure most Gym's are 10 to 30 a month but you not getting but maybee 2 sessions from a trainer for 60
I’ve been trying to make an effort to lose some weight...
I’ll definitely pick this up later on. It looks like a blast!
@B-Locks even 30 minutes with a trainer would have longer lasting returns than the purchase of this game which only gets played for a handful of days.
You can't catch me I'm the gingerbread man!
Alex, it looks so uncomfortable in jeans. Sweatpants next time, please.
(Great preview!)
I too am really impressed that you get a little beep when doing exercises with the game off. It doesn’t appear rushed when they include little details like that.
@KorGonia I know you can buy another Switch dock but they're about £70 and that's a second hand one. If I was going to play lots of games on the downstairs TV then it might be worth it but not just for Ring Fit. Thanks anyway.

(Sees people comparing a £30-a-session-plus-gym-membership Personal Trainer to a £65 game that nobody has played)
(Rolls eyes)
(Laughs)
(Leaves)
I want it, still waiting to hear if a download code version will be available outside Japan so I don't have to bother with constantly changing the cart out
Will probably buy it! Not because i think it Will become a regular part of My workout routine, but out of professional curiosty (physiotherapist)
But Will probably be fun to play with the wifey sometimes
Wonder how Switch couch potato will game now...
Judging from the hair, ring lady has already achieved the status of a legendary super sayain!
It appears Nintendo has taken exergaming to another level with an engaging RPG format with exercise, sounds brilliant. I wonder if there’s a cycling part of the game/workout à la Wii Resort Sports? It would be great to incorporate Map My Ride data for us hardcore cyclist and hopefully Nintendo incoporated a training format or reference to the Tokyo 2020 Summer Games.
The 2012 Wii Fit sold over 22.67 million copies and we still use the Yoga & Strength training several times a month. Like any exercise it’s about occasionally having a tad of discipline to push oneself away from that extra-large pepperoni pizza (*PIM) and semi-leap out of sluggo mode and move one’s body. It sounds like Nintendo will make exercising fun for those of all ages and that’s a positive especially for seniors. *Pizza in moderation
I'm already looking forward to the video whereby someone has managed to complete SM64 just by using the Ring-Con.
@Heavyarms55 How crammed is your house that you don’t have enough room to lay on the floor?? The switch is also portable, if you need to move it somewhere with more room.
Imagine integrating Ring Fit controls into a Zelda game, but allowing players to choose between traditional/Ring Fit controls. That could revolutionize open world games! Think Skyward Sword swordplay, but also having to jog or jump to traverse a BotW style open world.
@Silly_G
This will help you to go from tit to fit!
@Xaessya Exactly. And it would enhance immersion. Players would actually get to be Link. I'm not sure how they could incorporate climbing though. The Ring Fit control scheme could also tie into factors like stamina, etc.
Got a standing bike. Run it watching 30min of youtube game reviews or crunchy roll. Im good.
Wii sold 100 million units. Ps4 is at 100 million units by end of quarter with no need Of Chasing casual or Mobile sector with all this nonsense (and just jump ship once the fad is done)
Just make games and Fix online (iphone app is down to 2.5 stars. It is embarrassing)
It would be kind of awesome to include these control scheme into existing/upcoming games. Moving and playing games at the same time. Gaming time would be a bit reduced and people eould be healthier. WHO(World Health Organisation) would keep their mouth shut.
I am interested to purchase this, but will wait for reviews.
I'm actually looking forward to it!
Day one. I prefer working out in private and usually do a mix of Wii Fit and Samba de Amigo. I can't wait to incorporate Ring Fit into my routine!

"Pull ooooout... And then release."
The way Alex Olney's voice went nose pitch crazy made me laugh.
Is that a male avatar in the video? It's hard to tell, honestly.
Getting this day one. Not only is it a nice way to get up and moving and start doing something, it's actually a fully fledged new rpg ip from Nintendo with unique mechanics. RPG fans should be intrigued as well. I have been enjoy Dragon Quest 11 and this will compliment DQ nicely while playing entirely different.
Already pre ordered this . Hopefully this will be what it takes to get me working out again after a long time out of gym worse case is I'tll make me laugh and I have a cool fun rpg game
@NerdyBoutKirby Is that a male avatar in the video? It's hard to care, honestly.
Ftfy!!
I already have a routine, but I pre-ordered for a relative's birthday. Get the impression it'll be a hit.
looks cool mate
As someone who is on a diet this interests me. After my mum passed away I stopped caring about life and ballooned. But after just 3 months I’ve lost 2 stone, or 28lb or 12.7kg. I’m currently at 13.7 stone and want to get to 12 stone, so it would be cool to have a gaming related thing to help me burn calories.
@Grant007 trainer? Naw, youtube.
@Hughesy keep it up.!i.think this game could be a laugh and if it gets you moving all good👍
@Grant007 basing your assumption that this game won’t help burn calories by getting the user up and moving solely on said user not using the game is ridiculous. One can say the same thing about your solution for someone to just pay for a gym membership and fitness trainer. Without doing any research, it’s already safe to say that even after this game releases that there are more people paying monthly on gym memberships that continue to not go to the gym. Therefore, based on your assumption, gyms and gym memberships don’t help lose wait either.
@Hughesy congratulations! Keep up the good work!
I want a digital version
I’m gonna be getting this one for sure.
@wazlon I don't see the problem. It seems like you could just take the Switch and set it on a table with the kickstand or prop it up with some books or something.
@Nintendo_Thumb Had thought of that too, I don't want to play off the small screen. If they release a Switch Pro then I might well end up with another Switch later down the line, who knows.
@Link2284 Could be fun, integrate movement in BotW with Ringcon.
...People wouldn't be able to make it out of the Great Plateau, distance-wise, but hey it'd be fun ;p
It looks different, you gotta give it that.
@Sabroni If I'm going to be exercising as a nameless character, it'd be nice if that character resembled my own build.
This will never get old, just like tae bo.
This could come in handy in the pooping mini game in South Park. Pinch it off!!
@Xaessya : Sold!
1:48 WTF does he say? Sounds like it could be saying its good or not really good. Dude slow down and enunciate!
Before Wii Fit came out I was doing very little exercise. I bought Wii Fit and would do 30 mins every day - after about a year I lost 2 stone and that was the only thing I had changed exercise wise so you can definitely lose weight with these ‘games’. But, like anything, you have to put in the time.
