Nintendo has revealed a new option for Switch Online subscribers which will allow individual members to score discounts on a family plan.
Coming into effect from 1st October, anyone who has an Individual Membership to the service will be able to trade-in the remaining days left on their deal towards a discount for a Family Membership. If you signed up individually at some point over the last 12 months but would love to add your friends or family to your package, this could be a great way to do it.
More details are expected to be shared soon, but here's the official wording straight from Nintendo of Europe:
Starting 01/10, you’ll be able to use the remaining days of your Nintendo Switch Online Individual Membership as a discount when purchasing a Family Membership! More details, such as discount rates, will be available on our website at a later date.
We're just coming up to the anniversary of Switch Online next week - it first started on 18th/19th September last year - so this likely won't be relevant for those who grabbed a subscription on day one. Hopefully it'll come in handy for those who signed up a little later, however.
What do you think? Does this sound like a good idea? Would you use this option if the discount seems worth it? Share your thoughts with us below.

My advice is stop having kids as they'll only make you miserable and spend the money on games and your own personal pursuit of happiness. Alternatively have lots of kids and then post in the comments about how you wish you could afford this game.
Very well done Nintendo!!! My husband got an individual membership for his birthday (combo with Mario maker 2), but we already had a family plan. Now that membership can be put to good use!
To be fair I think I will cancel my one in December. I never play online (just not my thing) and SNES is not enough for me (from the list so far I will finish super metroid and link to the past and will never touch it again but to be fair as I am half way through metroid I already have more than doubled the time I have put into nes ones)
@YANDMAN Yeah, well, that’s just, like your opinion man
@Krzysztof Yep that's exactly what it is, you've gained one XP point.
Wonder if this can be tied into promotions? Like, a while back you got a year free with a Twitch sub, but since I already had a family sub, that wasn't applicable for me.
@Balta666 dont forget about cloud saving, which is useful when u have 2 switches.
@premko1 If you're playing a game that they'll let you use it with...
@YANDMAN Or have three kids, four controllers and eagerly await Castle Crashers Remastered.
PLEASE make it part of the family deal to be able to play digital downloads on 2 consoles simultaneously.... a la PS4. Paying full price twice so my son and daughter can play together seems s bit stingy.
@Jeaz That's my plan
@Balta666 what about game backups, that was the most important to me
@premko1 true but I don't think I will buy a second switch (but cloud saves is one of the reasons I decided to bite the bullet in the first instance)
@jockmahon I don't see that as sufficient to pay for the service
@Balta666 each to their own, £20 to not lose my botw progress was cheap enough for me
Good. Means I can use that individual membership bundled with Mario Maker 2 at renewal on 17th and then upgrade to family on 1/10. There's three regular users on my Switch.
@fluggy Do you mean to share the game library across all members of the family subscription and play simultaneously? I play games with other members of within my family subscriptions, but we have of course bought the games; 1 for each console as we live in separate houses.
@sikthvash ... no, I mean for 2 Switches to be able to play the same game at the same time from one eshop purchase. Both my son and daughter can download Mario Kart 8 (for eg)... they can both play it on there Switches at different times. BUT only one can play it at a time. They've both got the game on each of their switches from one purchase ... doesn't seem like a big deal to allow them to play it together. Ive got all my PSStore games on 2 PS4s (my sons and mine) and we can play everything together simultaneously from the one PSStore purchase.
@fluggy Ah I see! Sorry, I couldn't quite follow before (I blame a Friday work brain). Yeh, it would be nice if they allowed that. It's one area where Nintendo are not quite up to speed with.
@Balta666 imho only if u got 2 or more switches, cloud saving make sense.
@fluggy turn the flight mode on primary switch and voila - unless they want to play online. In that case only local is possible.
Seems like Nintendo REALLY slow-walked this implementation.
Nice, my son's getting a switch lite so this is good timing for me.
@fluggy Don't get me wrong I agree but Game Sharing (on both PS4 and X1) isn't really intentional it is just a loophole in the "play your games at your friends' house" account system not an official feature.
If MS or Sony decided to close it (like Nintendo) they need the other to do it too, I know more than a couple of gamesharers who'll happily jump ship if it means not having to buy "every game"
@Jeaz You should check out the Twitch offer again, it expires September 24th:
https://twitch.amazon.com/prime/loot/nintendo
@fluggy you are doing gameshare incorrectly then the switch version of gameshare works exactly like the ps4
@Rikimaru
... It doesn't. If my daughter is playing Mario Kart 8 and my son then opens Mario Kart 8 on his Switch... My daughter's is cut off. It only permits u to play it on ONE Switch at a time. PS4 allows u to set up one console as a Primary unit ... And another console can be used also. I leave the Primary account on my son's PS4 and he plays on his profile, and I sign in under my profile on the 2nd console. Means we can both play games online together from one purchase.
@fluggy I think that's by design. You bought a single license of a game. That one license can be used by either device, which is great that they can share the same license, but you only bought one license so only one person can play it at a time. It would be cool if they let you play it on 2 consoles for free, but they're not wrong by limiting you either since you only bought one license.
Announcements of announcements suck. Just announce it. And why do we have to wait 3 weeks until Oct 1?
So much positivity that will all be for naught when Nitneod announces what the discount will be. Probably $1 off if you have more than 6 months left, 50 cents if you have less than 6 months left. This is Nitneod we're talking about, discounts, deals and giving stuff away isn't their strong point. Still waiting for actual Switch game rewards in my Nintnedo.
BTW this is relevant to us. My son got the 12 months w/ SMM2 digital bundle. My other son has the 3 months Twitch Prime offer, but we aren't Prime members anymore so the other 9 months doesn't seem possible. So a discount to the family plan for the 3 of us would be nice. Target had the $35 card on sale for $27 a few weeks back. So unless the discount is $8 or more other offers are out there so we'll see what this "deal" is likely to be. But I'm listening.
Best thing about this offer will probably be using our gold points on it which are otherwise not being used. Unless I go all in on Kirby Clash.
@Daniel36 I guess then you'll glimmer some sense of achievement.
@fluggy you are still dong it wrong it's not suppose to kick anybody off a game try looking up videos on how to gameshare
@fluggy pretty much you gotta recreate the gameshare thing like ps4 so your who ever has mario kart 8 has to deactivated their account while the one who doesnt have the game have to activate the deactivated account and then the one who doesnt own mario kart 8 has to play on their on profile just like ps4 does it
For now I will be re-signing up on the individual plan but by March I may go to a family plan... Will this count for me then?
I have a feeling this is a precursor to a "you can have a second, Switch Lite without always needing to be online ONLY if you have a family plan" announcement.
@YANDMAN I have kids and every console with two Switch. I rarely hear people with kids complaining about having no money. The complain "us" parents all have is that we wish we had more time and not have to swap an hour of sleep every night to be able to play our favorite games or be able to play a long ass 100 hour open world game lol
Family Plan regular price is £31.49. Currently available for £24.85 from ShopTo.Net
Bobby Dazzler. I bought 1 yesterday (and we share the cost 8 ways)
@Daniel36 Don’t you mean two kids? (Unless you’re a single parent.)
Anyway, I’m in the same boat as a lot of others here. I’ve had access to individual sub promotions like the Twitch Prime one, but we already had a family plan. So far this offer sounds like you’ll get a discount on “upgrading” to a new family plan. It would be cool if we could apply solo subscription time as a credit to our family plans (maybe 12 months becomes 6 for a family?), but I’m not holding my breath on that.
(I guess you could let your family plan expire, redeem an individual sub code, like the MM2 one, then convert to family again? That’s no good if your individual sub offer expires before your current family plan runs out, though.)
bought the family plan since my lil bro does online on his profile too, but we're the only 2 that use it so i kinda wish there was some cheaper in between option for paying for a smaller amount of users or something
I’m single so no luck for me unless I convince my friends to get the family plan together. Still I have plenty of time from the individual plan + 3 months from OW when it comes
@kuliddar You must be one of the husslin parent types.
