In July, we found out the YouTube service for the 3DS would end in Japan on 3rd September. Well, it's now officially 4th September in Japan and according to Japanese Nintendo, Google has removed this app and service from the system's eShop.
If you're located in this region, you'll no longer be able to download this free app for your older handheld device. YouTube originally went live on the 3DS in 2013 and followed on from the YouTube update for the Wii U. Nintendo users in Japan with access to a Wii U or Switch can still access the video service on these systems.
With the 3DS generation beginning to wind down, we expect this app will also be removed from the 3DS eShop here in the west at some stage. Until then, pay your respects in the comments below.

If you want to see what it was like, just go to the website and set the resolution down as low as possible and that's still better quality that 3DS YouTube.
I watched maybe 10 minutes when it came out on 3DS and it gave me a headache.
I love my 3DS, but it was NOT a video player.
With all due respect (heh heh)...
Who, in this modern age, would ever want to watch YouTube on a 3DS? (And yes, I know they're there, but it still doesn't make sense to me)
Remember Nintendo Video and how they had like only 4 videos per week? And the Dinosaur Office episodes? And the Kid Icarus specials?
Well now you can put it on the Swit...... Wait, wrong app.
Now to put Netflix on the Switch.
....Meh, whatever.
for some reason, video playback on the 3DS web browser was of a substantially higher quality than in the youtube app so i used to use it all the time for watching videos until the ability to play videos via the browser was seemingly patched out. not sure why there was such a huge quality discrepancy, or why the browser got patched to hell but you win some and you lose some i guess.
Nintendo Life brings you:
"The Death of the 3DS", article no. 2577489.
But what about the loner who bought a 3ds but doesn’t have a phone, computer, iPad, or Switch. How are they going to watch The Quartering now?
CASTLEVANIA:SOTN ENDING SONG INTENSEFIES
its not like it loaded the videos before anyway
I used to use this until I found out you can watch youtube on the New Nintendo 3DS browser, with surprisingly good quality too. Heck, I still use it! The browser also makes it my portable pirated anime machine!
Um... Goodbye service I never used. I have a phone.
It was always crap from the beginning and I would just end up watching 80/90s cartoons on my 3DS using Netflix instead.
i dont get why they don't have Detective Pikachu sold with the Switch since you can redeem the digital copy on Youtube as part of movies anywhere
@PBandSmelly Holy crap, I had totally forgotten about that little gem of a series. “Dinosaur Office, Rwwaaaarrr!!!”
Yet another service goes down on the 3DS...
Oh, well...
I still have Youtube on my USA 3DS XL. 😏
My 3DS is just a super deluxe Gameboy now! I still love it and am playing it every day . Playing Splatoon 2 on Switch once in a while!
The Iwata era is over. 3DS and Wii U: RIP.
Good riddance, it never worked right in the first place. Only 480p and lower videos looked okay on my 3DS XL. Anything in a higher resolution would look like 144p.
And when I've gone back and checked in semi recent times to see if it had been fixed (Perhaps the past 12 months), the YouTube app crashes as it's attempting to load a video. Even went to the bother to delete and redownload it, with no success.
While it was fun watching Youtube on 3DS. It's not really something that will be missed from me. there's plenty of ways of getting Youtube these days for me.
@cryptologous "Patched Out"
More like due to the fact that the browser never been updated that it stopped working when Youtube become to new.
@Kawaiipikachu ahhh, this makes more sense
The 3DS had a youtube app? Why?
The 3DS had YouTube? Well you learn something every day.
The end of an era? Not really - you can get youtube on loads of platforms and it never really worked very well on 3ds anyway.
But 3ds isn't dead
Say wat you want. There isn't a console with a library as great as the DS/3DS. IF Nintendo would only straighten out that mess of an EShop and MAYBE have a DS/3DS shop to download onto the Switch....Then the gaming community would be like, "PS what? "X-what?" The Switch would clean up....Ok, maybe I'm slightly exaggerating, however, that move would generate more sales for Nintendo, seriously....it would be insane...and fun at the same time. I'd need to take a long vacation from work. Kind of like the one I'll be taking when Animal Crossing is released for Switch..."Hang on Kitt, Agent S, Ruby, and Groucho! I'm coming!"
@Ttimer5 Netflix and maybe WWE Network. 👍
I used 3DS Youtube app to play music videos while i'm working on something else. Like a mini radio (even though I have a regular radio receiver).
But 3DS app stopped working some time ago, it doesn't even launch now. I don't know if it's because they closed the service in Europe (didn't hear any news regarding that), but it's more like the app wasn't that good in the first place.
I didn't use YouTube on the 3DS much but on the WiiU the app was just horrible. I much prefered to use the browser especially since you could play a video on the TV while doing other stuff on the game pad.
I used my 3DS as a stopgap media player a few times when my phone battery was dead, and I could see the application for a younger kid who might not have anything else. But yeah the youtube app on a 3DS isn't a good substitute for a tablet or smart phone viewing option.
Poor japan they will never laugh again..
(Rest In Lemons) RIL YouTube for the 3DS in japan (2013-2019).
Considering the app just crashed every time you loaded it basically starting at the beginning of 2019 and all but the original 3DS can watch YT on the browser... literally nothing was lost.
@cryptologous I always used the web browser, because it could open alongside your game. Watch a quick walkthrough bit and move on. Pretty neat, totally unnecessary.
New3ds webbrowser was better for Youtube, videos seemed to be 240p and atleast the 3D was pretty cool.
As for the app, it was ultra low quality, I'd say it wasn't even 100p.
Nintendo and their fanboys: "Switch is NOT the successor for the 3DS, it's got a long life ahead of it"
Nintendo *shuts down every meaningful app while insisting it's still "alive" leading fanboys to echo the statement.
Face it, the 3DS has been dead since Switch launched, it's had pathetic releases in 2018, nothing by Nintendo themselves in 2019, and Switch Lite is its true successor despite what Nintendo (and Wikipedia- likely being edited by fanboys anyway) says.
