Shovel Knight's development cycle has been going for five years now, but soon it will come to an end.
During an interview with GameIndustry.Biz, Yacht Club Games COO James Chan clarified that once King of Cards and Showdown are made available later this year – that's it for Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove.
[King of Cards and Showdown] is the end of the Kickstarter list. That's it. This will be the wrap up, this will be the end of Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove, and then it'll be pre-production on the next thing, which we're not quite sure what it is yet. We're gonna end the five year dev cycle, take a couple of weeks off, and then come back and say 'Okay, what are we gonna do?'
In the same interview, Chan explained how the Switch would remain a key focus for Yacht Club moving forward, and noted how a lot of Shovel Knight's success (with the game shifting 2.65 million units to date) was thanks to Nintendo's platforms.
It was so early that we benefited from people having nothing else to buy. We were lucky then, but we do still see that the Switch is a really good platform for us. It's where gamers that speak our language are. It's definitely going to be our main focus.
The next game Shovel Knight will be appearing in is Shovel Knight Dig, a spin-off co-developed by Nitrome. Yacht Club is also focused on publishing Cyber Shadow, a game by Mechanical Head Studios.

Glad to see the series has gone places! Hoping to see more from YCG in the future!
Definitely keen to see what they do next, they’ve blown me away three times over with Shovel Knight
I always wanted an exclusive boss fight on the nintendo platforms like the other versions got.
@Moonlessky Ditto. I was waiting for Link to show up. Or maybe Bowser.
I think shovel knight has a fair chance as a playable character in the next smash game, he is nothing but flawless hits!
Stoked for King of Cards and Showdown. And those Amiibo that I preordered like 18 months ago, haha.
Shovel Knight is a masterpiece. I can’t wait to see what Yacht Club brings us next.
Are these parts coming to the Wii U version? Yes I still play my Wii U.
...and I enjoyed every second of the journey Yacht Club Games. ❤️
@Kanbei Based on their previous statements both the Wii U and 3DS versions will still be getting all the updates.
I've been playing through Shovel Knight, but got distracted by Mario Maker 2 and Celeste. These are clearly developers who care about level design. They introduce good mechanics, use them in interesting ways, and combine them in interesting ways. Anything they put out in the future is at least worth considering.
I love Shovel Knight, but I really am glad that YCG is finally going to be done with it. I wanna see what else they can do!
@MysteryCupofJoe I always wanted to see Meta Knight
You can imagine his ship flying over the map too
Can't wait to see what's ahead! Yacht Club sets the bar for indies as far as I'm concerned.
I too would like to know if this update is coming to the Wii U version. Yeah some of us do still exist. I already bought the game on Wii U.
I don't toss aside old systems just because there's a new one.
They can coexist.
Lets hope Super Shovel Knight arrives one day ^^
So excited for King of cards. Also just got my SNES controllers today and happy to say they work great with shovel knight!
I’ve been here since the journey was about to begin and it’s crazy to see how far Shovel knight and YachtClubGames have come! I’m very excited to play this new dlc and even more stoked for Cyber Shadow.. sad to see it ending but I’m sure they’ve got plenty more in store for the future!
@Kanbei @Zeldafan79
It will definitely come to the Wii U. King of Cards even has an official page on the Nintendo website:
https://www.nintendo.com/games/detail/shovel-knight-king-of-cards-wii-u/
Well that's a relief. I know switch is the new hotness now but some of us are still rockin our Wii U's!
It'll be sad but at the same time an epic send-off for a game that has been a massive, fun success. Probably the only game I've ever bought digitally for 3 consoles, and physically twice. Chances are I may end up getting the Switch physical version should they make it available at some point.
Cyber shadow looks to be their next big hit! Looking forward to it!
Kind of insane that they kept delivering on those kickstarter promises after all this time ... and even for free for all existing owners. They could have also just put out low quality additions and call it a day yet decided to give it their all. YCG definitely earned my respect
Just typing the words "Shovel Knight" makes me happy. I'll buy Treasure Trove for the PS4 when it's complete. That would be a rare case of triple dipping but YCG deserves my money
I bet they will be relieved too. After Shovel Knight expectations are high, but they can do something completely different now and give the blue shoveller a bit of a rest.
Being a one franchise studio rarely works out.
@Steel76 Agreed. Super happy for YC's success, but they have rode this one game into the dirt (and have taken forever to conclude it). KoC can't come soon enough.
So, Shovel Knight 2 then? 🤣
This’ll probably be the last new release/game I’ll play on my 3DS then, been going back each time Shovel Knights DLC came out
Five years spent working to fulfill every promise they offered to it's fullest. I like Shovel Knight, but with all of the work put into it, I think people will be fine with Yacht Club messing around with a new title, especially with Shovel Knight Dig coming up.
@Zeldafan79 same here. I still play my wii u and 3ds all the time, as much as the switch
I might eventually get shovel knight on switch too though. Yacht club has been really generous in giving all the dlc updates for free on all platforms to anyone who already owns the game
Class game. I've got treasure trove digital on switch but only ever done the base game. I thought I'd wait until everything is out to rinse it all. I may even double dip on a physical copy just to show support and gratitude for the solid work gone in to bringing us this joyful game.
