How many times have you played through the opening level of Super Mario Bros. on the NES? Considering how many systems it has been released on over the years, we're willing to be that it's more than just a handful. World 1-1 lays down the foundations for what has become one of the most famous video game franchises of all time, and most Nintendo fans will know its layout like the back of their hands.
That's what makes this Super Mario Maker 2 stage from DannyB so compelling; it's World 1-1, but in a way you've never experienced it before. The entire stage layout has been turned 90 degrees, making it a vertical-scrolling challenge rather than a horizontal one.
We've seen some brutally creative Mario Maker levels in the past, and while this one isn't as challenging as some, it's unique in that it presents a familiar location in a new way. Give it a spin and let us know what you think by posting a comment below.

There's an entire hack of Super Metroid that does the same, and it's pretty interesting.
Genius! I do love how creative people can be with SMM2. Makes me feel inept though ha!
Thatโs brilliant!
This really shouldn't work, yet it does.
as long as its not a mario 3d world level, they all suck ass, lag on online multiplayer seams better these days , a bit
I get nerveus by just watching the video. Its like watching a horror movie ๐
I've seen too many 1-1 remakes already..
Obligatory question: do you die if you walk into the "pits" on the right?
This is great. Well done maker
Aww, someone beat me to it.
This seems like such an obvious twist to be made, yet Iโve never thought of it before now. Awesome!
There was someone else that did 1-2 vertical. I found it during an expert run.
I've done 1-1 upside down using the dark underground, it was really simple to do but surprisingly a lot harder when everything is flipped on its head. Then I made fire Mario a goal challenge and it just topped the whole thing off, as it means you can't just shortcut through the stage and you have to be super careful with the enemies to maintain fire Mario
@nhSnork I'm guessing that's why there is spikes on the left side since it's one of the levels you can walk out the other side? Not sure if that is something happens in vertical levels in SMM2 since I don't have it.
@dougphisig The spikes on the left may be to keep it from scrolling horizontally when you move to the left. Solid blocks do that, I am not sure about spikes.
Nice course. Now I can continue to die on level 1-1.
I thought this was the falling down version, which I've played. It looks like an actual challenge when you have to climb it! My goddess I love Super Mario Maker 2!
@dougphisig that doesnโt happen in SMM2.
I feel sorry for the poor saps that get this stage in Multiplayer Versus!
Literally the first stage I played in Mario Maker 2 on launch day was a different vertical 1-1. I liked that one more.
Course ID is GB0-VJ0-8GG
I Gotta say pure skills..
Love the idea.... but I hate levels that you can still be alive but you've somehow failed because you've killed the enemy you need to make the jump already. GRRR.
@AlternateButtons So good to know! Yeah, I love how Mario Maker 2 never goes below 60fps. I suppose it's possible, but so rare that it counts as locked at 60fps in my book. Even these awesome glitch levels with psychedelic aftereffects run at 60fps! I wish I could find more. I've only played "uno mas, acid trip" 5MS N30 HHF
I beat one that was upside down. It was hard, but I loved it.
This makes me want to rewatch the AGDQ 2017 run of Super Metroid Rotation (the 90 degree rotated version of the game that RupeeClock mentioned)
@Roto13 I just played it. Thanks! It was easier (but still challenging). I did manage to finish it after a few tries.
@nhSnork Nope! It's a long fall if you miss a jump, though.
@michellelynn0976 Same here They were a pain.
@ShinyUmbreon Big time. I had fun though.
I love how a lot of the awesome levels I see posted around this site and the internet in general are ones I could never enjoy even though I own SMM2 because I would clearly not be able to get past the first few jumps without dying 30 times.
@michellelynn0976 It's crazy how people make the best games..
@ShinyUmbreon I know.
That's pretty creative.
