Fans of the JRPG genre are in for one heck of a treat next week when Grandia HD Collection arrives on the Switch eShop on 16th August.
GungHo Online Entertainment originally revealed this collection back in August 2018 and more recently in June this year said the title was coming soon. This collection includes the first and second game, along with great characters, mature storytelling, memorable music and what's described a fun battle system.
Here's a bit more, directly from GungHo Online Entertainment America (thanks, Gematsu):
The classic RPGs have been updated to bring enhanced visuals, handheld support on Nintendo Switch, and gamepad and keyboard support on Steam. Players will be getting their hands on two games that changed the landscape of RPGs forever, for the first time in beautiful HD graphics.
For more information about the history of the Grandia series and this HD Collection, check out our previous posts.
Will you be downloading the HD Collection on your Switch next week? Have you played these classic JRPGs? Tell us down below.

Why isn’t Grandia 3 included? I heard the Saturn translation of the original was awful. Did they redo it?
I never played the originals. So I should pick this up.
More JRPGs are always welcome.
@brandonbwii SquareEnix owns publishing rights to it.
I've heard good things about these games. They are calling it a collection, so I assume it is both games together?
@brandonbwii For that matter, why no Grandia Xtreme. But then, that one was pretty mediocre story-wise, even if the combat was as fun as ever. And the Playstation localization (the Saturn version was Japan only) is still being used for this version, but they said the graphics will contain elements from both versions, since the Saturn one had superior textures and lighting/shadow effects while the PSX one had better transparencies.
Confirmed for Smas--ahahahaha, ahhh, I just had to say it.
Started 2 on my Dreamcast back in the day and never finished it, though enjoyed what I played.
If they can make the collection $30 or under ya got me.
When I have time I definitely want to play through these. Wish there was a physical release.
sweet, how about Lunar next?
Retail version???
@brandonbwii I mean, the Saturn version it never left Japan, so I'm not sure which you're referring to. If you mean a fan translation, I would imagine so. If you mean the SONY localization for the PS1, probably. It was really the only glaring issue w the game, outside of minor framerate and visual effects issues vs the superior Saturn version. Well, that and the voice acting. Can't imagine it wouldn't be updated. I've read that it will include both Japanese and English soundtracks and language. And German and French, which I don't believe the original ports had. So I think there's a decent chance it's been updated.
@joey302 they said unequivocally, absolutely not. Digital only. Same w the PC releases.
So digital only, huh?
And it's supposed to be based on PlayStation version instead of the arguably better Saturn one, isn't it?
Can't freaking wait for this. Been waiting for more word ever since they said it would be "winter 2018". Grandia 2 is one of the best RPGs of all time and I'm so stoked! The one problem is that it comes out just days after No Man's Sky VR.
@brandonbwii from an interview in another site (at E3): 'Finally, I asked Mr. Minagawa if a Grandia III HD Remaster could be a future possibility. "I cannot say," he replied. "The history with Grandia III is so complicated - who distributed it, who published it, who actually has the rights. If you really want to ask that question, you'd have to go ask Game Arts first."
@Moroboshi876 '"We want to be clear, the GRANDIA HD Collection are not ports of the original PlayStation games, they are remasters. We are using the original PlayStation code of GRANDIA, but working with the Sega Saturn version to craft the definitive version of this beloved RPG."
After we asked if GungHo could offer more clarification, GungHo replied:
The team is primarily using the Saturn version as a reference point, working to match details and effects from that version of the game.'
@Tsusasi Where did you get this great news? Anyway, why working with the PlayStation code if they know Saturn is better in this case?
Man, I wish they had made a retail version too...
If this was done by Square Enix or Game Art instead of GungHo we would had gotten a physical collection just like the Collection of Mana. So disappointed that they refuse a physical release.
@Moroboshi876 Cause the PlayStation version is the only one in English duh. Not only do they had to make sure the game look its best but also the translation being accurate too.
@retro_player_22 A dub considered the worst thing ever happened to mankind, judging from comments on the internet. But anyway, if the graphics part comes from Saturn I'm happy.
I hope we can choose Japanese with subtitles, though.
@Moroboshi876 A dub for those games would be good though if they found the right voice actors for the games but since these are just budget releases I don't expect much from em. Subtitles are okay with me, I grew up reading text with RPGs anyways so it's no prob as long as the games retain their fun factors like the originals.
@retro_player_22 OK, thanks. In the same interview where I found those statements about keeping Saturn version in mind they absolutely rule out a retail release. It's a pity, but at least we can buy it digitally without the fear of a future physical version.
@Tsusasi Is Grandia getting a new translation separate from the Saturn version?
@Sabrewing Yeah I meant PlayStation. Whoops!
I will get this. I have previously played a bit of grandia II on pc and I enjoyed it but could not finish it because pc and JRPG don't really go together you know...
@Heavyarms55 Yep.
I've been waiting so so long for this to come out, and of course it comes out when I'm going to be lost in Three Houses for the next month at least.
What a cinch! These are two of my favorite RPGs of all time, still have the best turn-based battle system. I'm also hoping Lunar, also from GameArts will be next. Expect an earlier Winter, with lots of snow!
I loved the original though I wasnt that good at it and dont remember finishing it. Never played the sequel. depending on the asking price I will probably get this
@RobotReptile are you kidding? That game is worth even 60$/€. It's really a gem of RPGs. And this time it will have native Widescreen. So no stretchy one unlike the Anniversary. And you also get Grandia 1 game included. Both are gems. You will enjoy it even if it cost around 40 euro. I think that's a very good price
Any idea if there is going to be a physical?? Hope so, never played these before, but looked at the old gameplay (PS1) and VERY interested to see what the upgrade is like
Very welcome!
I Need them.
@Moroboshi876 this is the site and article... https://www.rpgsite.net/feature/8611-grandia-hd-collection-meeting-with-gungho-at-e3-2019-and-hands-on-impressions
Great news indeed! Looking forward to replaying these classics!
@Tsusasi Yes, I found it and read it earlier, but thanks anyway.
Sadly I don't feel compelled to pick this up digitally.
Enjoyed these games a lot but they don't come close to the Lunar series..hint..hint..
Will get it next week unless it's overpriced like the mana collection if it is will wait for a sale.
@Sabrewing
From the videos I've seen it's definitely based on the PSX version, albeit with seriously ugly "high-res" sprites.
I'll stick to playing the fansub of the Saturn original.
I'm really interested in this as long as the price is right. If they try to pop this off at 60 I won't be picking it up for a long time with a discount. I'd like to see 30, but I have a feeling we'll see 40 bucks for it.
@DockEllisD
I know what you mean! I have considerable backlog. Every week I'll buy at least one game (usually an arcade archive or other retro release) and some of them may never even be played by the time I have to upgrade to whatever the successor to the Switch will be.
@RobotReptile 2's battle system is superb. The plot I got a bit tired of towards the end. But reckon I'll pick this up
@8bitforever Well, that's why Saturn is so difficult to emulate, but this is supposed to be a remaster, not emulation per se. Anyway, as long as they use the better parts from Saturn, as they said they did, I'm okay with whatever they used as a code.
It will be mine. Oh yes...it will be mine.
No physical no sucky sucky.
I’d love to play through Grandia 2 again as I didn’t quite finish it, but the biggest hurdle for me would be finding the time... I liked the way battles were handled.
@brandonbwii Grandia 3's story was awful, as was the voice acting
@mikegamer I only bring it up because unlike Grandia Xtreme it did get good reviews at least.
@Tsusasi that’s a shame- I’m sure both games would fit on one card too!! Oh well!
Always wanted to play the well loved Grandia, but I'm going to struggle this generation too it seems. I'll backlog it nonetheless...
Probably in the minority but I prefer Grandia 2 over Grandia 1. What are the odds we see Lunar 1 and 2 someday on Switch?
would love to play these, but the camera constantly pushing in and out makes me literally motion sick. i'm sensitive to it, so it probably doesn't affect most people. but i couldn't play 2 without getting nauseous, and it looks like 1's camera works in a similar way.
@w00dm4n love that game so much😁.. best game for the ps1 era.
