Switch owners already got a dose of the Hero when he arrived in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate earlier this week, but soon, Dragon Quest enthusiasts (at least in Japan) will be able to play as him once again, in a demo based on his own upcoming outing, Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age - Definitive Edition.
At the Dragon Quest Summer Festival 2019 in Tokyo, publisher Square Enix announced this demo for the Switch-bound RPG would be released at some point in the near future. Users who play this demo and record save data will receive a "Skill Seed" in the full game and be able to obtain a premium hero card "The One Descended from Erdrick [S]" in the Japan-exclusive Switch title, Dragon Quest Rivals.
Square Enix also mentioned how Dragon Quest X would appear in Dragon Quest XI S as a past world players could travel to and confirmed a "North Leather Style" outfit for Erik/Camus would be in the game.
Dragon Quest XI S arrives on the Switch this September. Will you be adding this one to your collection? Leave a comment below.

Maybe I’ll consider Dragon Quest after Fire Emblem.
Announcing a demo before it's released?
Useless, useless information, dudes.
Was going to get the PS4 version of Dragon Quest but the Switch version looks like it will be the best.
I wasn't too interested in the game, but i will be happy to try the demo.
been thinking about getting the full game but not to sure this might convince me to buy Dragon Quest 11 S
Nice! Well thought, SE.
Anyway, I highly recomend this game to any RPG fan, it really is a gem. One of the best JRPGs of the generation so far, along with Xeno 2 and Persona 5.
Even the story is far better than I thought (being a DQ, I didn't expect much).
Super cool. I already have it preordered, but a chance to take it for a spin early is always welcome.
This is really smart IMO because the only reason i bought Dragon Quest Builders 2 was because i enjoyed the demo so much.
Very cool. The release isn't far off, though, so they should probably get on that and give people time to actually play through it before the full game releases.
I'm pretty excited to be able to play around in the DQX setting, especially since Squeenix will probably never release that game in the west.
I want to play this. Passed it on ps4 for potential a switch version. The only thing holding me back is Link's Awakening... also thinking about Fire Emblem, but can't make up my mind.
@Silly_G
Not useless at all. People who were considering pre-ordering based on liking the genre, can now wait to make sure they like it first.
Personally, I don't need a demo. My preorder is locked in. But for the casual Switch owner, a demo is nice. Give those players who are on the fence a taste. Entice people to buy the game.
I'm already more than sold for the game, I'll just wait for the actual release.
It'll be interesting to see how this runs. The PS4 version is 30fps, so the Switch version at 30 is going to need some serious trimming.
In the positive column though the Switch version replaces some of the god awful ultra low budget MIDI music from the PS4 version with orchestral versions.
Really torn between getting the PC version for better performance or the Switch version for the Enhanced features. Hope the Demo comes to the west cause I'd really like to try it.
It's not a rule of mine, but it seems like anytime a new character gets in Smash, I end up wanting to play their franchise. So I'm probably gonna play other Dragon Quest games before this one. I'd like to play the whole series, but that'll take a lot of time.
@Silly_G Bruh
A confusing article to be sure.
Cool. I’d be happy to give it a try.
20 Sep: Link's Awakening
20 Sep: Ni No Kuni
27 Sep: Dragon Quest X
That's quite the week!
I hope the demo progress will carry over to the full game.
This is great news.
Having already put over 70 hours in on Playstation 4, I probably won't be buying this game again.
However I have been curious about the 2D/retro graphical option on this version. Hopefully the demo will let me try this feature out.
No need for a demo. Dragon Quest games are fun. Only problem is that you need a long break after finishing one. Playing them back to back is just too much.
@Roam85 This is my first Fire Emblem game and I'm obsessed.
Square Enix is actually setting a very good example by releasing demos for all of its major games - Octopath, DQB 1/2, Oninaki, and now this one. It is so comforting to see such a huge gaming company actually working in a pro-consumer way in an age of predatory practices. Respect.
@ShaiHulud yes I want to get all of them too! My wallet is telling me otherwise though 😬
@Silly_G so they're only supposed to announce things after they release? What?
I hadn't realized that I've played at least two Dragon Quest games already (4 and 9), and they were traditional style battles, but this game is more action RPG which is more my speed. A demo can only help me consider wanting the full game, so thank you Square Enix.
@PlayedNSlayed Same I'll probably get Zelda and Dragon Quest on Switch and pick up the Ni No Kuni remaster for the ps4 later when it's discounted.
@Silly_G not that useless. The Builders 2 demo had it's flaws but also helped a lot of people deciding upon getting the game that were otherwise unlikely to ever get the game.
And with Hero being added to Smash Bros suddenly bringing the license into the spotlight for a LOT of people who'd never known what Dragon Quest ever was, the sudden reveal not long after that a demo will be released for the main game to feature one of his incarnations will definitely be noted by many as an occasion to really have an idea what that game will be/look like.
There's a LOT of people who're now curious about the franchise that previously weren't and even knowing that a demo will be out before the game is even out will definitely be something a lot of them are going to look forward to if you think about it just that way. Not everyone will want to dig down the PS4 version when most people didn't even know it existed prior to the Smash DLC, considering how the original PS4/PC release basically got flat-out eclipsed by Spider Man of all things.
@MeloMan XIs is pretty much turn-based still but I do have to say the game brought a LOT of quality of life in term of story progression, XP gathering pacing balance and just sheer accessibility(ontop of Party Chat giving you plenty of hints of where to go next in the story, just loading the game will always give you a fully updated recap of where you were into the story to make sure you always know exactly what you were up to the last time you shut down the game, were it one day ago or an entire month).
This said the return to DQ8's third person camera is most welcome and really allows the gorgeous world to truly shine at it's fullest(which even ties further into more action-friendly minigames and activities found into the game, including monsters that can be visible in the game world rather than being purely managed as random encounter... though if you've played 9, that's something you're already familiar with, though there's now more options in how to further trigger fights/aggro or even avoid monsters etc).
I'd like to see if it's worth the double-dip with the retro style so this is nice to hear, not much time left before release though...
I just can't give these games the time needed anymore unless I can take them on the go, Still not 100% if I want to get back into a DQ games though. Demo may be just what i need to convince me either way.
Honestly, this is my most anticipated game fgjs year. I know it’s been out for a while on PS4 but I have purposely waited to play this on Switch. Hopefully the demo drops soon since the full game release isn’t too far off. Between this, Ni No Kuni, Pokémon & Luigi’s Mansion I don’t know if I’ll have much time for other games for a while
@Lizuka while it's cheaper on the PS4, the Switch version has tons of QoL update and some content added for story as well. The most SE said about this coming to PS4 is they won't say anything for now as well.
Here's list of what they added: https://gematsu.com/2019/06/dragon-quest-xi-s-list-of-additional-elements-and-improvements-dlc-voice-drama-and-more-detailed
@Ludovsky @Dezzy : I never insinuated that the demo itself is useless. They should just release it and get on with it. They hadn't even announced a release date or hell, a release window for it.
Frankly, I'm not keen on indulging this website's ever increasing use of non-articles for easy clicks.
Or are we going to perform a song and dance every time a demo is merely announced?
I'm very happy Switch is getting Dragon Quest 11 S (and the demo is welcome). I would also like the regular version of FF XV or some FF spin off (Lightning the third coming)
@Silly_G You do realize in the article it also mentions benefits that were announced for playing the demo and a few other details about DQXi. Or did you only read the headline?
@Galarian_Lassie : This information pertains only to the Japanese market, and any other details seem inconsequential, and there is no mention of save data carrying over to the full game either, for example.
Had an international demo been announced, sure, but there is no guarantee that any of this information is of any relevance to western audiences as not every demo makes it out of Japan, even for games with international releases. Demos with English-language support are by no means guaranteed to be released internationally either.
Remember how much of a great time sink Dragon Quest IX was? I am so ready for this.
@ramu-chan I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that the game is actually designed again almost from ground up for the switch version so it should run well. Atleast everything I've seen on Nintendo Treehouses has been promising, ofc that could be a "faked" presentation
these games need demos
