Now this is a story all about how Fresh Prince himself, Will Smith, developed something of a fondness for Nintendo games - and especially The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past - back in the '90s.
In a 1992 issue of Nintendo Power magazine, both Will and music and TV partner DJ Jazzy Jeff spoke about how they'd been enjoying a variety of games across Nintendo systems. It appears that Nintendo Power sent some games over to the duo for them to check out, and the result was overwhelmingly positive.
Reading the interview in full, though, it's pretty clear to see that Will really liked Zelda. You can see it for yourself below if you'd like to read the whole thing, but we've picked out just a couple of snippets:
Nintendo Power: How did you like the new games we sent you?
Will: I liked them all, but I definitely liked The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past best.
NP: Did you play NCAA Basketball, Will?
Will: I tried it for a little bit, but as soon as I put the Link game in... I've found the two Pendants. I need to find one more before I can get the Master Sword.
Jeff: He needs help - I called him and he didn't hear a word I said on the phone. I could hear him in the background collecting coins or something.

As you can see, it goes on to reveal that DJ Jazzy Jeff had noticed Will's new obsession before the interview, and when asked about the kind of game he'd design himself if he could, he uses Zelda as a reference. To be fair, we can completely empathise - who doesn't love a bit of A Link to the Past?
Maybe we should hook him up with a copy of the upcoming Zelda: Link's Awakening remake on Switch to see how that goes down? If you're reading, Will, give us a buzz.

AHHHHH HA HA HA, THATS HOT
Or, you know, Breath of the Wild.
The Fresh Prince Of Hyrule.
@Sinton The pacing on truckloads of shrines and Korok Seeds does not offer the same satisfaction as OoT/LttP/MM/TP, etc. key item gathering. Link's Awakening is top-down and traditionally-paced.
EDIT: "The kind of game you can go back and play again and again." Not what I think of when I think LoZ. Which is why I can appreciate BotW wanting to break up that hesitancy or the tedium of the traditional formula. But it went to the other extreme. OoT is closer to the middle range of this spectrum, and ALBW is a bit closer to the happy medium than that.
What about Carlton? I think he's more of a Mario guy.
@Quarth Or Just Dance.
@Sinton LOL, yeah, if Fresh Prince was aired today he would be dancing to a remix of It's Not Unusual. Maybe he imported some Japanese rhythm games back in the day?
NOOOOOOOOW... this is a story all about how,
Link ended up in the upside-down,
and I'd like to take a minute just to remove my Moon Pearl,
I'll tell you how I become a Link to the Past hare.
It's Rewind Time. You know, if I controlled Nintendo, I would make Zelda and NCAA Basketball
@Sinton @Quarth nah, definitely more of a fortnite guy me thinks
@Spanjard And Mark-Ass Brownlee
I miss Nintendo Power’s comics.
Nester for smash.
I love this. I hope he's still gaming.
Mark Hoppus from Blink 182 is a huge Zelda fan. And Gerard Way of My Chemical Romance loves the game, too.
What is it with this icons of 'cool' and a fantasy epic?
Robin Williams (RIP) was like that as well, in fact he named his daughter Zelda because he loved the game so much.
@Shiryu Well, since you started a rap battle.... ahem
NOOOOOW this is a story all about how
My timelines make no sense right now
And I'd like to take a minute in this comment section here
I'll tell you how I become the Link mistaken for Zelda
Wake up in this Hyrule place in a daze
There's some Koroks and a Deku Tree in most of my games
Killin, exploring, adventure so cool
Shooting some arrows, solving some puzzles
When this bad dude named Ganondorf whose up to no good
Trying to dominate everyone in my Hyrule-hood
I got this one little sword and this shield right here,
So let's go on this adventure and don't call me Zelda!
(Yeah, you gotta say Zelda as Zeldare but it kinda works)
Breath of the Wild Wild West.
@Kienda I think I will stick to my electronic genres. xP
Jazzy Jeff loves Nintendo as well. He regularly scratches up the SMB1 overworked theme in his sets to this day.
Saw him in Aladdin over the weekend. Does he ever age or is that really great makeup and CGI? He doesn't look any older than the pic above, minus the haircut.
Haha fun interview.
@SpicyBurrito16 https://youtu.be/M53B6YitO78
Maybe NCAA Basketball was something in its day, but I got NHL Stanley Cup (basically the same game) in the late '90s when SNES games were dirt-cheap (as even a complete sports game was worth like 50 cents ) and played it for a few minutes and couldn't tell ANYTHING that was happening in the game.
Maybe it was too much Mode 7. (I read reviews for a Konami NFL game for the SNES which criticized it for basically that reason.)
I guess Mr. Genie has some good taste
That interview is the most 'written by a marketing person' I've ever seen lol.
@Shiryu Lmao, that last line
@Quarth Let's face it, Carlton would think videogames are beneath him, or he would finally discover Pac-Man as his first videogame this year and get addicted as if it was crack.
