Earlier this week, the promotion allowing Nintendo Switch Online subscribers to pick up two game vouchers ended in North America. If you didn't take advantage of this limited-time deal and had hopes of it returning to the region in the future, you might be out of luck. According to the official Nintendo FAQ, these vouchers are not currently scheduled to return:
As of July 31, 2019, Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers are no longer available for purchase. Previously purchased Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers can be redeemed for eligible digital titles up to 12 months from the purchase date. Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers are not currently scheduled to return, but Nintendo of America is continually evaluating special offers for Nintendo Switch Online members.
The same promotion is still available in Europe and other regions. You can select from a number of first-party favourites such as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Maker 2, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and pay £84.00 / €99.00 for two of them.
Even though Switch users located in North America can no longer purchase the vouchers, they are still valid for 12 months. View Nintendo's official website for more information.

Yeah I bought some vouchers. Kinda wish they kept it going.
I definitely took advantage of these vouchers. It was a good deal for me as somebody who buys digital (especially mixing it with Raise). I don't get why they are stopping it at all. Are they losing money from it? I'm lost. Whatever I guess. At least I'm set for now.
Considering they cost almost as much as a brand new physical game (if not more), I never bought them. I prefer physical copies and generally physical copies eventually go on sale making them cheaper than these vouchers.
I only subbed to get a voucher for alliance 3 and astral chain. Look like I won't be re subbing.
It wasn't that big of a deal anyways
Really weird that they decided to make this a limited time thing. One less incentive for people to sign up to their online service. Oh well I guess.
It seems weird to make this a limited time thing. It wasn't any super sweet deal or anything, but I still bought quite a few of these vouchers for the 60 dollar games I plan to buy at launch.
As someone who buys digital 95% of the time, the voucher program was big for me. I got 2 sets and picked up Mario Maker 2 and Fire Emblem 3 Houses. I still have 2 vouchers left and will be picking up Astral Chain and most likely Link's Awakening. The only reason Nintendo would discontinue the program here in North America is the same reason any company discontinues any promotion that features price cuts. Besides the fact that price cuts lead to lost profits on normal sales margins, having indefinite sales promotions can actually lower the perceived fair price of the product itself. Its like those games that are always on sale in the eshop. Because they are on sale always, nobody is going to pay "regular" price for those goods since the "regular" price is perceived to be the price when they are on sale.
I bought a pair and already redeemed for FE3H and Astral Chain. Still got 3 more games need to pre order.
I had no idea this was a limited offer. Might have to quickly take the plunge...
@chewytapeworm well bad news if you’re in the North America...it ended Wednesday.
I wonder if I have an account from another region, could I buy more vouchers? Maybe there is a solution here yet!
@mattesdude I’m fully aware, hiding in Europe over here. Can you still get the offer if you changed your region though, if you could really be bothered..?
I'm sure NA will get a holiday sale. The reason the vouchers were good was because Nintendo games rarely go on sale. I still don't have arms because I missed a %50 sale months ago. It seems like Nintendo games go from full price to players select with no inbetween.
@chewytapeworm If you're in Europe, you're fine: there's currently no scheduled end date for the vouchers, with the possibility that they're a permanent feature outside of NA.
Meh, I had been thinking of buying a pair and using one to try out Fire Emblem. Guess I saved myself some money. I just got laid off recently and I won't be making any big 80 CND game purchases any time soon. I've got Smash for multi player fun with friends. And I've got FF7 and 9 that I still need to replay after buying them for Switch. Probably would have used the second one for Link's Awakening or Pokemon.
Pokemon is one of those games that I could see myself buying day one, but Link's Awakening... I probably won't get that day one without some sort of discount.
The time limit was a huge turn-off. Maybe they'll tweak it and try again, but I'd prefer a standard digital discount for Online subscribers
I checked yest and they were gone. There's 2 $60 games I want to buy. I assume Americans can pay the $60 a game. It was a d**k move to have vouchers. Then even deeper discounts on games for the same games at the E3 sale shortly after the vouchers.
Physical copies at Walmart tend to be $10 or $15 on sale on their website to compete with Amazon but the local stores will give you the discount when you point out the online store is doing the discount. I'd just rather have digital copies.
well I did the voucher thing for FE3H and Link's Awakening.
Mainly because I don't think $60 is the right price for Link's Awakening - but I KNEW I would end up buying it anyway.
Like - a 25 year old GAME BOY game that takes like 5 hours to beat shouldn't be the price of a full game - and the dungeon editor seems like non-event.
The issue is Nintendo still need to protect retailers, so selling games digitally cheap will undercut them and therefore the incentive for gamers to buy hard copies. In major chain department stores, hard copies are always cheaper than digital. Usually $20 less in Australia ($70 compared to $90 for major Nintendo first party releases), while some outlets, notably Amazon, will sell for another $5 off, especially by pre-order. Nintendo keep doing this otherwise the margins on hardware are so low so for retailers to dedicate space to games, they need more than just the hardware. Of course, accessories is the other major way to favour retailers. Controllers and even the Switch dock are ridiculously priced.
Ugh. NoA sucks.
This really isn’t a big deal when Walmart seems to be pricing every single Switch game at $49.99. You’re essentially getting voucher prices on everything there. Plus, it’s physical media, which is far less transient and can be resold.
Oh well guess i'll go back to buying slightly used games for crazy low prices again. Where Nintendo & Others get absolutely no money out of the sell. I don't do this to hurt Nintendo & Others but to save money. And Nintendo & Others kinda did this to themselves.
Oh is that your wound? Ok let me pour some salt and lemon juice in there for you!
Your absolutely right @thesilverbrick i buy all my games at my local Walmart. Where every Switch game is $49.94 or less even on launch day.
Your forgetting the B.S they told us years ago @HalBailman. They said that going digital would save on production cost which would be passed on to the consumer. Yea how's that working out for everybody but the game companies who don't have to make game cases and carts anymore and they make sure you can't sell your games to others anymore?
I've thought about the math. Right now on Raise I can get two $50 eShop cards for $92 ($46 each). So I get $100 for $92 plus any promo codes. That's enough for two vouchers and I keep a couple of extra dollars. Plus any gold coins I have so take maybe like $2.00 off. My first time on Raise, it cost me $82 for two $50 eShop cards using the first time promo. Adding a little gold coins, it cost me like $78 (something near that number - I don't remember) for 2 new games.
Two games at Wal-Mart could be $50 each, plus a 7% sales tax where I am. So it would be $107.
$92 (which doesn't include a potential promo code discount, gold coins, or any money left over) vs $107. The voucher system was cheaper for me.
But it's different for others.
I hope they bring them back.
@BacklogBlues You're right, that was BS. I don't remember reading it anyway. It's been standard across all systems for years hard copies are initially cheaper. Do you have a link to their comments?
Seems like NA always gets screwed over on good things, whether it's the vouchers or the collector's editions of physical games.
NoA is possibly the worst division of Nintendo. Well, maybe except for that Russian one.....
Dont get it why they dont make this definitie
I think it wasn’t that great of a deal anyway. You can get physical versions for around the same price, and unlike digital those games retain their value
@BacklogBlues and the funny thing about that is now Walmart sells digital code cards along side the physical but the digital is 10.00 more.
@AlphaElite On the flip side, NoA is fixing Joy Con drift for free while NoE is not.
I'm in Europe, still need to pick these up. I'll definitely get to use them!
@JayJ yeah it was ..I saved 80 dollars the last few months...thats a big deal and it would of saved me hundreds if it was a permanent thing.
Nintendo being stingy I see, that’s a bummer. If I wouldn’t have had bills this week I was gonna buy vouchers before the offer went away. Shame...
No i don't have the links @HalBailman because the comments were from Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft back in the Wii U, PS3, and Xbox 360 days. So it would of been 12+ years ago or so. But it went something like this. We believe digital games will be the future of the gaming industry as it will make consumers gaming library accessible anywhere there's a game system and internet connection without having to take physical games with you. And it will be better for the environment and cost less on the production side of things which will be passed on to the consumer. It's basically a win win for everybody and something we think our customers will be very excited about.
@AlphaElite I've been noticing this too. Like why is NoA so bad at their jobs? I feel like we don't get the same level of customer service other regions are getting.
I wonder why they would discontinue something like this so soon?
@Leuke Nintendo of America makes lots of money where as Nintendo in Europe is no where near as popular. So they have to do everything they can to promote Nintendo out there while here we are willing to throw our money at the bare minimum.
I never bought them because I have commitment issues but now I'll never have the opportunity to. ;-;
@BacklogBlues That's actually a belief or a prediction, and will be true in time. Right now, gaming companies are still relying on retailers to help promote and sell games so they make deals with them to sell below RRP.
I just buy digital for the convenience of easily always having them although I have SSBU which came with my switch as a physical and I bought SMO physical but everything else I am buying digital like SMM2
Considering they allow you to get about 15% discount on a launch title, I think they are at a better value than most people appreciate.
@vitalemrecords I totally agree. Link’s Awakening is essentially a 3DS game. Like Samus Returns, it should launch at $40.
To all our friends living in the US: I know is not a solution to this problem, more like a way to exploit a loophole, but why not just create an account under a different region so you will be able to keep buying the vouchers?
Also for many games the US marketplace is not the cheapest one out there (talking mostly about indies, as big games have a more uniformed price-tag throughout the different markets), so having an account under a different region is like hitting 2 birds with 1 stone. Sure you would have to pay for another subscriptions, but if you plan on buying another 2 or more sets of vouchers, then it gets immediately repaid.
@thesilverbrick I prefer digital downloads so I don't have to change out the game
i never was interested in those vouchers.
i wish nintendo had better deals like playstation 4. like two for 30, or big discounts like in playstation plus.
digital is way too expensive on switch
"not currently scheduled"
"We have no plans to introduce new hardware"
Yes, I trust you.
