It's fair to say that we're all more than a little bit excited for the release of The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening in September. Lucky European gamers can pre-order a limited edition version with a Game Boy themed steelbook, but North America just gets the 'Dreamer Edition' which bundles the standard release of the game on Switch with an art book.
With this in mind, FuturePak are showing off a lovely looking metal slipcase which they have put together for Zelda: Link's Awakening. It will be on show at the Gamescom event in Germany this week, but unfortunately, it really is just a promotional product to show off the quality of their work. You won't be able to buy this product... well unless Nintendo allow it.
Let us know if you'd like a metal slipcase to protect your precious copy of Link's Awakening on Switch with a comment below...

this really sucks i want one of those
That's pretty wonderful, I wonder why slipcases like these haven't been more of a thing for Switch games?
There have been cardboard slip covers that slide in from the top or bottom, but nothing with a secure slip in from the side.
@RupeeClock I never understood slip covers with top/bottom slide ins. While the slip cover for Sonic Mania is cool and all, it's very easy for the game case to fall out from it.
@Quarth The slip cover for Sonic Mania+ is the perfect size for the Playstation 4 game, and thats why there is a stupid cardboard insert to hold the switch version in.
Well, at least the title prepared me for the dissappointment. Pretty neat looking case. I still prefer steelbooks myself. But if I had the option to get this in a CE for NA. I probably would.
Its bad enough I'm having to import this CE from Europe to get the steelcase, and Luigis Mansion 3 from GAME UK for the Glow in the Dark steelcase, and Daemon X Machina CE from Amazon UK for the steelcase, and goodness knows what else.
NA is lame
@JaxonH I'm in Europe and I rather have the normal editions tbh haha Never liked when one game case stands out from the rest on the shelf, particularly if it's not the exact same size as the rest.
@RazumikhinPG I believe you get both the standard case and the steel book. My AU listing showed both packaging for the collectors edition.
@RazumikhinPG
Still comes with normal edition. I keep steel cases separate from my gaming shelf, on display.
@RazumikhinPG As per other people have said, you get both the standard case and the steelbook, but I fill the steel case with a foam insert and cut out spaces so that they can hold around 20 game cartridges.
I don't understand the point of making these sorts of things so exclusive. Why make something like this rare instead of just being an optional deluxe release?
Huh, I just noticed that the example Switch box's spine has no title, but still shows the id Software logo. That's weird.
@RupeeClock Shining Resonance Refrain, Smash Ultimate, and Bloodstained also have similar covers to this one
@Ultimategamer132
As in they slip from the side, and are made of metal?
I couldn't find evidence of it for Smash Bros Ultimate, but could find something like it for Bloodstained Ritual of the Night. Though I think that might have been a backer reward as I recall the retail release had a Steelbook instead.
@RupeeClock All of them are metal whilst Shining Resonance and Bloodstained (based on your findings) are slip-on. I brought up Smash since there is a metal case for the game in the deluxe or special edition that is metal, but lacks a slip-on functionality.
Now this is a slip case that is really cool. Perhaps Nintendo can partner with them for a future title.
@Bunkerneath Yeah, it's not the best solution. It's really a shame.
I really would love to know what the decision making process is that involves not introducing a more expensive premium edition of a product in a specific market. It's the most bizzarre decision making I've ever heard of for a business. "Golly, Bob, our revenues are great in the NA market, we're the leading division of the company! But do you think we should introduce premium products here for 20-50% more margin like we did in insignificant minor markets?" "Naa, we're really doing good with just the bare minimum, let's just stick with that."
I really can't figure out what they hope to not harm by not introducing the premium version that includes swag.
@NEStalgia It looks like they did release a US edition at 20% more and it’s still managed to sell out. Can’t explain why it’s missing other goodies.
The situations very frequently reversed though with the US getting better items. The BotW collectors edition didn’t have the Switch case in other regions, so it’s not like the US is necessarily worse off overall. In terms of adding value the UK seems to get it best by my observation by virtue of the UK Nintendo store throwing in extras for first party titles sold directly through Nintendo. They miss out here and there but the Nintendo store often seems to have something other places doesn’t. All in almost Nintendo logistics can be a bit baffling.
Outside of limited editions the US has also had issues for stock with Amiibo and things like the 3DS XL (reportedly) that didn’t seem to reflect my own market here in Australia. It’s odd how independently different regions are treated in this respect.
@Smigit Yeah, I mean I expect demand for different products and the existence of different promotions to vary by regional interest, but...Nintendo just seems to work from how they imagine the region actually works rather than what their sales numbers and consumer surveys actually say....
The voucher program being time limited in one region only, however, makes it clear they're actively working against NA, it's not our imaginations.
I'm getting the game digitally, but it still would have been neat to have. Though honestly, I would have tried to import the Euro Steelbook version if it didn't sell out immediately.
I think the American gaming market is getting screwed a lot this generation when it come to Switch games.
Why is America getting jipped out of so many deluxe editions? Ever since Xenoblade Chronicles 2 we haven had any good deluxe versions since. We got jipped on Metroid: Samus Returns too.
@RazumikhinPG There's a lot to be said for a uniform block of red spines. Heck I even get anal over different typefaces being used on them.
Screw you, NOA.
Protecting a plastic box that is near undamageable with a metal sleeve that will easily scratch and blemish... I love how it looks, but the purpose is nothing more than a simple aesthetic!
Still want it though...!
looks really nice, i want the full version of that artwork as a poster though
I would love a case for my game
Would love to have metal slipcase to protect your precious copy of Link's Awakening on Switch
That looks pretty nice.
