Fans of the Studio Trigger anime Kill la Kill are in for a treat towards the end of July when the vagrant school girl Ryuko arrives on the Switch in her very first fighting game adaptation.
Following on from the initial reveal of the game around the same time last year, Arc System Works has now confirmed a Switch demo of Kill la Kill: IF will be made available alongside the game's launch, on 25th / 26th July. It will include a Versus Mode – featuring a total of four playable characters (Ryuko Matoi, Satsuki Kiryuin, Ira Gamagoori and Uzu Sanageyama), and the first story mode chapter.
If you're wondering why the Switch demo is releasing alongside the game, it's "due to reasons", according to the official Arc System Works America Twitter account. Other versions of the demo go live on Monday, 8th July. Digital pre-orders for Switch version are expected to follow sometime next week.
Update #2: Due to reasons, the Switch demo won't be ready until the launch of the game.

Sweet. More companies should do this.
I have reservations about it, but if I enjoy the demo, I'm more likely to buy the actual game.
"due to reasons"
ArcSys: "In short, our Switch version is crap so we hope you jump the gun and buy the game on launch day without trying it first or just buy the game on other platforms."
Seriously though, I hope the Switch version runs good. 30FPS on a "fighting/brawler" game is already a minus imo.
@Zyph why would they release a demo if the game is crap on switch?
@Zyph I had the same thought. Has some Bloodstained vibes.
@Sabroni Yes, they would. Also did Square Enix with Dragon Quest Builders 2. Compared to the PS4 demo it plays like crap on Switch.
I hope, Nintendo will come up with a more powerful unit soon. Personally I chose graphics/performance over portability every day.
@Sabroni I meant that as satire . A joke if you will.
But seriously, if you try the demo out days or weeks before launch and you don't like it, you won't buy it, right? Now, if you were interested in the game in the first place and the demo and full game launches both on the same day, there's a high possibility you'll just buy the game outright. It's possible ArcSys had the same line of thinking cuz yeah the game might be crap and they still want your $$$. Why would they release an early demo if they know there's a high chance you won't buy it? Unless of course you still know better and try the demo out before buying.
@Lando_ Yeah as for Bloodstained, maybe they wanted to ride off with the game's good PR on other platforms and prayed it will transfer over the Switch too. Apparently the issues were too serious and still backfired
That headline is so wonderfully written it sounds like "DEMO THE GAME OR YOU WILL BUY IT LATER THIS MONTH"
@TempOr Sales-wise sure. But it sure questions Iga's or 505 games' competency and attitude towards Switch development which doesn't really sit well with Switch owners. Granted, the high Switch sales could be attributed to the initial # of backers on Kickstarter who preferred the Wii U/Switch version at the time. Including me which I backed $60 for.
I'm skeptical about the reasons, but still happy its coming soon. Still mad at myself for spoiling the ending for myself when it was still new to the point I couldn't watch it, but at this point, it's common knowledge. Studio Trigger is having a great year so far with Promare and the Shantae opening!
Another fighting game! What is this the 90's all over again? Only fighting game i'm interested in, is Killer Instinct coming back home.
I love when companies release this kind of demos as I can't get games regularly, and this let me try and play some games for awhile. I'll be downloading this demo, KlK was great and this game looks awesome so this is a no-brainer for me.
I'll probably check out the demo, I did like the anime so maybe the game will be good as well.
Hopefully the NA version has English voice acting. I loved watching this anime on Netflix with dub. Those voice actors were really good.
I was considering this game, but at this point, probably not because I'm amassing a collection of fighters that's getting out of control. But as far as the suspicion that this game won't run well on Switch, I really don't see why it should be an issue. The graphics look rather basic. I have Zoids Wild (Japanese Import) and it looks similar to this game in many ways. Fighter with 3D graphics and gameplay, cartoonish visuals that don't require that much detail, same whacky special move animations that interrupt the gameplay, etc. Zoids won't exactly wow anyone with stunning graphics, but it looks fine and it runs smooth. So there's no reason Kill la Kill should be any different. Of course I also can't figure out why a 2D action platformer like Bloodstained struggles.
I’m just hoping for results, akin to FighterZ. I have both the PS4 and Switch version. And they did such a good job with the Switch version, that it’s my go to. Yup, the PS4 version is noticeably better. But, not so much better that I felt the Switch version was at all inferior. I’m hoping that they manage to pull off a similar feat with KLK. Fingers crossed.
Note: I will be playing both the PS4 and Switch demos prior to purchase. The Switch demo delay does concern me though
@Lando_ If you're a big graphics/performance guy, then I take it you play most of the big AAA games like Witcher 3 and Fallout 4 on PC?
That's how I am. If I can't play something portably, then I'll always opt for the tethered version of a game that's not struggling to run at 30fps and output advanced visual effects.
I dunno...I can handle shooters at 30fps because bullets fly infinitely fast and make up for it. But certain genres like racers and fighters need to be smooth. The former for more enjoyment, and the latter for a better understanding of frame data and how fast certain attacks come out. People playing on Switch will be at a competitive disadvantage.
@Ralizah Nah, I'm happy with the graphics/performance my Xbox One X can deliver. I also own a PS4 Pro for the exclusives.
I'd also be happy if a Switch game/port could reach a steady 30 fps, but it's not the case with Dragon Quest Builders 2 and Bloodstained; sadly. I've also had lots of bad framedrops playing games like Ys 8, Gal Gun 2, Fate/Extella Link and Nights of Azure. Otherwise I'd give portability more often a go than graphics.
I really hope, the rumors of a "Switch Mini" with improved specs are true.
@Lando_ Ah. I agree regarding most of those examples. NoA2 is practically unplayable in handheld mode, so I have no reason to get it on Switch. Bloodstained... honestly, I might revisit it once the input lag and framerate stability issues are sorted out, but the current build is too rough for my liking. The lighting and resolution issues are unfortunate, but I could look past them if the port was good otherwise.
Gal*Gun 2 played fine for me, though, and the addition of motion aiming made it preferable to the PS4 release. Dual Analog aiming sucks. My issues with that game were almost entirely down to the game design: making endings dependent on lobbing gobs of food at the girls instead of performing well in the levels made it a considerable downgrade from Double Peace, imo.
Ys VIII... I was OK with how it performed during normal gameplay segments. The framerate tanked during some of Dana's dungeons, though. I ended up selling it after finishing it because of those issues.
The PS4 is mainly for exclusives and the occasional dirt cheap purchase for me, because even my aging mid-range rig still runs circles around it. Also, any game with aiming will automatically be a Switch or PC purchase because of the potential for motion aiming.
Additionally, I just can't see playing a lot of AAA games on PS4 when they kind of struggle to run well on the hardware. Switch at least allows me to play games away from the TV. PS4 had no equivalent killer feature, imo.
The same is true of Xbone X for me, honestly. I don't have a 4K set, and the PC versions of games allow me to tweak settings to prioritize performance.
For me, portability is the biggest consideration if the Switch port performs well enough to be enjoyable. That won't excuse terrible optimization, though.
The demo of DQB ran great on Switch. Surprised to hear DQB2 is struggling.
Wow, I never thought of this. "Spear, why haven't you paid your taxes?" Spear: "Due to reasons."
@Ralizah Yes, Dragon Quest Builders 1 runs perfectly fine on Switch, I agree. But I've played the Demo of Dragon Quest Builders 2 on PS4 and Switch, and I've been extremely disappointed regarding the Switch's performance in comparison. It struggles to maintain 30 fps while the first Dragon Quest Builders runs at 60. Yes, the resolution of the second one is sharper (might be 1080p), but I'd have preferred a lower resolution for smoother gameplay again.
Glad there's gonna be a demo. I love Kill la Kill, but IDK about a 3D fighter. I would have prefered a 2D fighter, or for the characters to be put into BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle or something.
Regardless, it'll take a bit for me to try the demo because Fire Emblem: Three Houses will be taking up all of my time.
Don't know if i will buy the game, but if the demo will have the versus mode with some characters, i'm definetely downloading it to play with my friends.
If i like it, i'll wait for a sale and then buy the full game.
I would be excited for this game but I'm personally not into 3D Arena anime fighters. My favorite anime fighting games are usually ones that play more like traditional 2D fighters, like Guilty Gear Xrd Rev, FighterZ, Blazblue, Persona 4 Arena/Ultimax and the Budokai/Tenkaichi games.
I would love to see the FighterZ team adapt other anime to 2.5D fighters with the same visual spectacle as what they accomplished with Dragon Ball. JoJo, My Hero Academia, Fullmetal Alchemist and Devilman (a combination of the original OVA and Crybaby if possible) come to mind
I know nothing about this series and I know Japanese media often strings English words together in titles... buuuut...
Kill la Kill:IF???
Are we just randomly stringing together letters now? I don't know if I've ever heard anything more nonsensical
Those outfits though...
@Lando_ "yes they would" doesn't answer my question. Why would they release a demo if they know the game is crap?
@Sabroni It wouldn't be the first time for SE. The Japanese Dragon Quest Heroes 1 + 2 demo, for example, looked fine, but hovered around 20 fps most of the time. I was shocked how bad the performance actually was in that demo. I think it's pretty clear why they never released this version overseas.
In the case of the DQB2 demo, it looks like the framerate, while a good deal better than what we saw in the DQH demo, is still very unstable and keeps jumping around between 25 - 35 FPS. Hopefully they stabilize it a bit before it releases here in the West.

I've played the Demo on PS4 today and by the simplistic look of the game, I'm not too worried about issues (framedrops) on Switch. The 60 fps run smoothly on PS4 but a stable 30 will be okay too, I guess. Maybe the loading times and resolution may get a hit on Switch, resulting in a overall slightly more 'jaggyish' visual quality. Regarding the simple artstyle though I'm also not too worried about that.
I'm more surprised about seeing so much fanservice on Sony's console. Panty shots, sexy outfits, breasts bouncing... I should be happy since I prefer my waifus uncensored , but I'm also a little bit p*ssed about Sony's inconsistency on that whole censorship policies topic. It's hard to trust them anymore cause there is no guideline if or what they are going to censor in a game or not. Don't know if I'm going to get the PS4 or Switch version, to be honest. On Switch, I could rest assured that nothing is censored though...
I don't understand why you can download the demo right now from the Japanese eShop but can't for the us eShop I just don't get it. It has full English subs. Like what are they doing dubbing it in English? Or censoring it? I just don't get from what I have played of the Japanese demo it seemed okay don't think i will waste 60 usd on it but when it goes on sale for 20 30ish dollars I'll probably grab it.
You can download the demo right now on the American eShop. A full week before the game comes out. Looks and plays great. Picking this one up!
@Sabroni exactly and as of now the demo is out in the US eShop and fully playable. Good stuff from what I see.
