If you're still playing the addictive battle royale game Tetris 99 months after its release and have been training up in preparation for the next big event, you'll be pleased to hear Nintendo has now revealed the 4th Maximus Cup will be taking place later this week on 21st June. Below is the official announcement for North America:
This one is likely to be slightly more difficult than certain other previous events – with only 999 players (with the most points) eligible for the reward of 999 My Nintendo Gold Points. Even if you don't win during this period, you can still earn points.
Will you be participating in this upcoming event? Are you still enjoying Tetris 99? Tell us in the comments.

hope we can unlock the game boy theme again
Somebody with a lot of time and a lot of skills is making bank from all these Maximus Cups 😂 (emphasis on “a lot of time”)
@Sikboy1029 that was a timed event thing
edit* i realised you said hope instead of how lol my bad
Yo, i hope they give us a new theme. I’m all about those 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
I just got the online for free from Twitch Prime two weeks ago. That means I'm on my way to free money
@MotionMan If they did, what theme would you be interested in? Something like the super expressive Tetris DS game (the one that had cool games running in the back like Mario, Zelda, and Metroid) that's what I want!
Hmmm I wonder, can these points be used for anything else if you don’t make the top 999? For anyone not supremely versed in the art of Tetris, this would sort of be a pointless (no pun intended) challenge if not :/
@Reigestugatensho that would be a really cool one! If were basing themes off of games though, one based on the Sega Genesis version would be really cool looking as well.
Great love Tetris 99, came second on a couple of occasions and can get Top 10 regularly, any tips for actually winning?!
Loved the Game Boy one. Nice to have an alternative theme and music.
Was hoping we'd see more themes and other classic Tetris tunes in future events.
@MJInnocent Keep playing. It's gonna happen eventually. And ignore what place you are in, just focus on the game. If you let the stress of being in the top 10 get to you, it is easier to mess up.
@Heavyarms55 alright thanks!
I'm absolutely horrible at Tetris in general, even worse when playing online (although I haven't played online since that 3DS game came out a couple years ago). I guess I'll stick to earning gold coins the old fashioned way, by purchasing other games while the eShop sale is still active. HAHA.
@MJInnocent if you’re getting Top 10 fairly consistently, then you’re likely good enough to win. The final factor is luck. Skill only can take you so far here, as often you can lose simply because multiple players ganged up on you. Once you have badges, the odds of that happening increases, but you likely need badges to get through the last few ranks, so it’s a catch-22. And once you get hit by a couple big attacks, you’ll likely get targeted by more trying to finish you off.
Ultimately, just play your best Tetris and hope for the best. You’re making it to the top 10 so skill likely isn’t the problem at this point.
Damn it starts same day Crash Team Racing comes out xD
I'm not even gonna bother, I'm one of the worst Tetris players on the planet. I think my highest placement ever was 59. Usually it's between 70 and 90-something.
@ShadJV thanks a lot. I don’t understand about the badges? How do you earn, or know you’ve earned them?
This is definitely just going to be a race to see who does not have a life, because basically if you play the most during the timeframe you will be in the top 999
@MJInnocent when you KO players. You send trash lines, from when you clear 2 or more lines at once, to players you’re targeting. If those trash lines push them into losing, you get a KO, and after a certain number of KOs you get a badge (the first only takes 1 KO but the numbers get progressively larger). You can have up to four badges total. Each badge makes your attacks send larger amounts of trash. If you KO someone with badges, you steal there badges. The thing is, there is a shortcut option to focus attacks on the player with the most badges, so this makes you more of a target... but when it comes to a few players left, the player with more badges has a huge advantage because their attacks will make much more trash.
That’s where luck comes in. If you want to stand a fair chance near the end of the match, you need to make sure to acquire them by KOing players (you can choose to target players close to KOing, your chosen target is shown at the top of the screen). But once you have those badges, you are now more likely to be targeted, so you have to be lucky and not have people send you trash too quickly for you to deal with.
You can see your badges on the bottom right, next your playing field. It should show your KOs too I think there?
The best strat in my opinion in terms of your targeting tends to be to first try to get KOs. Pick off the weak players. By midgame, you should change your targetting to players with the most badges. But if at any point you have a lot of people targetting you (3 or 4 at least), switch to targetting attackers to try and slow them down. It doesn’t always work but there’s always a fair amount of luck in the game.
@ShadJV alright, thank you very much I appreciate it!
That’s a lot of gold points! Too bad you can get jack squat with them on the My nintendo website.
So what's the deal with the themes? Are they just a one time event or will they ever be other opportunities? Personally I am not a fan of these limited time opportunities to unlock things like this. Luckily I got the Game Boy theme while it was being offered but I would be annoyed if I missed out on that.
@JayJ I always thought it would then be sold as DLC later on
@Doktor-Mandrake yeah I thought that would be the right thing to do. Selling the themes for a couple bucks sounds about right to me, it would make it so you can at least get the themes one way or the other.
@Rutty_YT You can use gold points on the eShop.
@insertcoin2play I know that, but most of the time, you save 3-10 cents. It’s very rare if you get a good deal.
@Rutty_YT Yep, but you were talking about not being able to use it on My Nintendo. I was just saying you can use it on the eShop. Besides, a penny saved is a penny earned!
@ShadJV Hey, wanted to tell you I just got my first Tetris 99 Victory! Absolutely delighted, I actually yelled in triumph 😂 thanks for your advice.
@MJInnocent oh congrats!!! No problem!
