Square Enix has revealed Dragon Quest Walk, a brand new entry in the series developed for smartphones. Just like Pokémon GO, this game uses your location to bring elements from the Dragon Quest universe to your local area.
The game is being developed by Japanese mobile studio Colopl - the company which Nintendo took to court last year over multiple in-game patents - and is expected to launch in Japan later this year. It has you walking around the real world, talking to townspeople, battling against monsters, preparing equipment, and more. There's also a story mode which develops as you walk and play.
The game was revealed in a Square Enix press conference today (and is the title initially teased just over a week ago). During the very same conference, Dragon Quest series executive producer, Yu Miyake, also spoke of an upcoming Dragon Quest XII.
He said, "By the way, about Dragon Quest XII, which I’m sure is on everyone’s mind—[Yuji] Horii and I are currently making preparations on series developments that will connect to XII. I think it’s still too early, but we would like to announce it in some form, so please wait a little while longer" (thanks, Gematsu).
If you haven't already, make sure to watch the trailer above to see what Dragon Quest Walk is all about.
Do you like the sound of Dragon Quest Walk? Are you more excited to see what Dragon Quest XII will eventually bring? Tell us below.

Ugh... 🙄
Another mobile game...
I might see the outside world again if this turns out to be good. Hopefully it will only be based on how much you walk and not on portals like Niantic games, which makes the game near impossible to play outside cities (only 1 portal within a 1 mile radius around where I live).
Hopefully good
@Anti-Matter you don’t need to download the game if you don’t want to. I’m sure there are some gamers who like games different to you.
Been playing dragon quest for years, cant wait for 11 switch and 12
@Anti-Matter Mobile games are really good! There are loads of great examples of all genres. Just ask
But another Pokemon Go challenger? No ta. I’ve invested 3 years in that already. I don’t have the time or patience to start something else.
Developers: “So the most important thing we need is a word like go that isn’t go. Move? Forward? Jog? Run? Walk? Yeah, pick one of those and we’ve got ourselves a game!”
Ah classic Square Enix
announcing a game that is probably several years away from an official unveiling
and probably even longer away from a release
I mean good to know it's in development though!
Meh, I think I'll pass
The most underwhelming announcement they could have made.
And here I was expecting either Dragon Quest Heroes I&II for the West or a Dragon Quest I-III collection based on Android versions already out there, which would require little effort.
Ooooh. I mean, I love me some Dragon Quest and I'm getting bored of Pokemon Go to be honest. Do you think this will come out outside Japan though?
I really enjoy Dragon Quest but it is kind of funny how they are copying other games. They already had a Pokemon knockoff for NDS called DQ Monster joker or something. Then DQ Builder of course. Now another Pokemon rip.
Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime was one of my favorite games! I hope they make a new one for current gen consoles
Lame, copycat concept won't work. The idea is not fresh anymore and Dragon Quest is not popular outside of Nippon, so it won't go international like Pokemon Go.
Nintendog Walk™ however will succeed. A mobile Pet simulation that requires walking to keep the dog happy makes more sense.
"Walk" has got to be the worst name they could have picked. What were the names they passed up?
DQ: Boring AF
DQ: Watching Paint Dry
Whatever the word for walk is in Japanese they should have gone with that instead.
Google said Aruku. DQ: Aruku. Much better.
Also better titles -
DQ: Taking it to the Streets
DQ: One for the Road
DQ: Ease on Down the Road
DQ: Journey with the Cursed King
I have no interest in Dragon Quest Walk, but the tidbits about 12 sure have me interested, and I haven't even played 11 yet!
@konbinilife To be fair, Dragon Quest has had people collecting monsters and battling with them since about 1988 - roughly a decade before Pokemon even existed. It’s actually Pokemon that took Dragon Quest III’s idea and expanded on it.
I lost it with the commuter dragging a coffin behind him.
@Krull the first Dragon Quest was my first RPG ever. And I played 2 and some of the newer entries. I never knew DQ3 you could have monsters fight along side you!!
Somehow I missed that. XD
Didn't think Square Enix would stoop so low. I thought they were good friends with Nintendo
@nintendolie
I would be so into this! Yeah it’s a rip off of Go, but it looks like they’re pushing the concept further with a story mode and other things. Can’t wait to learn more,
Seems like it would be neat, but like Pokemon Go, it doesn't really fit my lifestyle so I probably wouldn't play it that much.
Not gonna lie. I’ll probably play this.
That trailer should had been for a Dragon Quest live action crossover movie, I'll gladly watch it if it's like that. Too bad it's only for a lame mobile game.
Since they copied Pokémon Go!, it's only fitting I copy my original Pokémon Go! post.
"It's not for me, but I'm sure it will be fine."
Cool trailer, but even if it gets a release here it won't take off because Dragon Quest. Anyway, forget XII, when are we getting XI on Switch?!
Trailer had a big wow factor. Then I saw the screenshots and laughed at it.
I think I have enough with FE Heroes to satisfy my mobile gaming.
It is probably going to be another cash-grab mobile game, but I might try it.
I want to like it but most likely it is not an issue because:
1) It will not be localized
2) It would be smarter to sell this on the switch with a camera attachment (oooow, Gameboy retro action)
3) it will not work on my phone
