In February, Nintendo revealed Dr. Mario would receive his very own free-to-download entry on mobile devices later this year. Now that E3 2019 has come and gone, the Japanese company has revealed the first gameplay footage and announced Dr. Mario World will be released worldwide on both Android and iOS devices next month, on 10th July.
This unique take on the series changes the long-time formula, transforming it into a puzzle-solving game. It will mix things up even more by adding new doctors with special skills and including helpful items such as Koopa shells to certain puzzles. To start, there'll be a total of five worlds to play through and more areas will be added over time. Diamonds allow players to spend real money and can be used to continue levels, obtain items or restore stamina.
You can pre-register for the game on the Apple Store or Google Play right now. Below is some additional information from the game site about what else you can expect, along with the official introduction trailer:
Match capsules with viruses and watch them disappear! Simply match three objects of the same color vertically or horizontally to clear them. Take your time, because each puzzling stage’s configuration of viruses must be cleared using a limited number of capsules.
A colorful cast of viruses has Dr. Mario's world in a panic! Dr. Mario and friends have put on lab coats and grabbed capsules! Now they're ready to eliminate those unruly viruses. Hundreds of stages over many different worlds need saving, with new worlds coming on a regular basis!
You're not in this alone—send and receive stamina-giving hearts to use in stage mode! Then, show off your puzzle-solving progress. In versus mode, you can challenge others to a one-on-one showdown
If you missed the original announcement, the free-to-download game will also support multiple languages and will be available in 60 countries/regions. Visit the official game site to find out these exact regions. Lastly, the game is being co-developed by LINE and NHN Entertainment.
Will you be trying this out on release? Tell us in the comments.

My mom is gonna love this...
Oh wow Dr Bowser is a thing now hah
How much is it? Is it a free phone game? It looks fun, and I'll play it, but I'd rather have a Switch Dr. Mario!
This is different than I expected, glad to see that a lot of effort is going into Dr. Mario World though. Interesting that green viruses exist now too. Can't wait to try it out!
I could never understand this game as a kid. Wouldn't mind checking it out now though.
Yoshi is a doctor now! He’s getting paid! His tax fraud days are over!!!
For a mobile game this is more in-deph than all of the console versions. If it weren't for the microtransactions this could easily become an eShop 3DS/Switch game.
Pretty tired of Dr.Mario at this stage.
@Kalmaro This looks to be verrrrrry different from the traditional Dr. Mario game, so that may be something worth keeping in mind going in. This doesn't look appealing to me, so if you don't like it, don't let that turn you off from other Dr. Mario games.
I take it Mario Kart's still a while to go.....
Gotta be better than MK... oof that was a rough beta.
When they said this would launch in more countries than any other Nintendo mobile game, I assumed they would release it in all the countries they had released previous mobile games in and also some more. I'll be able to get it, but not all of my friends who played the other ones will be able to yet
Didn’t Nintendo say Mario Kart Tour was going to release this Summer? Kind of Nintendo to release these 2 so close to one another, even if Mario Kart Tour ends up being at the very backend of the Summer.
This is great news. Hopefully it will spike the stock price nicely together with the rumors of more Switch editions.
I'll give this treatment a prescription!
The question is, will this be what the doctor ordered? Or will the game be a tough pill to swallow?
@Deku-Scrub No, they never gave a release window for Mario Kart Tour
@ALinkttPresent I double checked my info before I posted but decided to check again.

It appears Nintendo did in fact give an approximate release window for the game when it got delayed earlier this year.
So according to the trailer, there's also Dr. Peach, Dr. Toad, Dr. Yoshi, Dr. Bowser...
...Dr. Pauline when?
Looks actually kinda refreshing for Dr. Mario....even if it might be standard mobile fare in practice
"Stamina"
Nope.
I wish Nintendo would take the subscription/season pass route (a la Fortnite or Rocket League). Mario Kart on mobile would work perfectly with that model. Season pass games allow players to access the entire game, and provide mostly cosmetics for those who’d like them.
It looks fun..... But man is this video slow. Had to change it to 1.25x
Wonder what new characters they will throw at us (a la Mario tennis?).... Isn't it Nurse Peach?.... Guess she got promoted to a Doctor. And Yoshi is always cute!
looks better than the other Dr. Mario games because you have shells this time and that's it.
l might try it soon
@SmileMan64 I was excited to hear there was other characters in the game and not just Dr. Mario and Dr. Luigi! Here's hoping for Dr. Wario (he got this title as a spinoff micrograms from WarioWare) and Dr. Kamek (a wizard and a doctor, what's not to like?)!
@Reydn while I can't deny that the whole season pass thing works (I'm a fortnite player on switch so I know). Nintendo usually likes to keep their free-to-play games without that feature. You should see Super Mario Run as an example of this. However, it's still early so who knows!
Oh cool, another free to play game that I'll never play.
No Belgium in list of supported countries because of that no gambling law ?
We need Dr Mario for Switch!!
@joey302 We do indeed. I fear this mobile game will be our lot for this gen though.
I'll probably only get into this if it's the first Nintendo mobile game that can be played offline. Doctor Mario is very much a bus game for me.
Where's Dr. Pink Gold Peach?
I'm pretty sure that's the title of at least five Super Mario World rom hacks.
No thanks, looks really dull. Will wait for Mario Kart instead.
Seeing the heart at the top left of the screen says it all. Online only with energy so you can only play a few times before having to wait or pay money. I really thought Nintendo were above 'Games As A Service'..
Dual currencies and stamina systems; Nintendo learned fast what fuels the mobile market and bowed right down to it. Every mobile game they’ve released so far feels like a scummy mobile knockoff, and this is no different. This rise of this kind of stuff is why I quit playing mobile games essentially, sad to see Nintendo contributing to it.
Looks like a standard smartphone match-three game rather than traditional Dr Mario. Which makes sense but not what I’d want in an ideal world.
@therube @Jawessome
They tried to make a more "traditional" game with Super Mario Run, with a "Pay $10 just once to unlock everything" model, and it didn't sell as well as expected. Then they made FE Heroes, a free to play with microtransactions, and it was a huge success.
Hard to blame Nintendo. Mobile audiences are different from traditional console/PC audiences regarding what they're willing to pay for.
I just hope they restrict this system to mobile Gaming.
Love the voices of the viruses in that video lol.
@SmileMan64
That is the conventional telling, and not wholly wrong. But for the amount of content on offer, and in the mobile market, Mario Run was not good value for money. Half that price and it would have sold a lot better. There is a smaller, but still extant, market in mobile for premium, pay-once games, but the price range is usually 2.99-6.99. Nintendo’s bite size games could have lived there.
Anyway, it doesn’t matter, the Switch alone has more first party content on it than I have time to play, and every one of those games is infinitely more palatable than the mobile offerings, so it’s just as well that they’re so easy to ignore.
@therube Agree with u guys, these mobile games don't do anything for me, it just feels like "greed" 2 me and I'm not gonna b suckered in 2 this data usage, micro transaction scene...here in South Africa there killing us with data pricing so we need 2b ultra cautios...
Interesting! Isn't it a bit strange that the blocks are floating from the bottom, normally it falls from the top. Also, what's the best Dr Mario game on Nintendo consoles?
Can we have a non-F2P physical version on Switch? K. Thx
Surely it would be easier to develop a Switch version as opposed to supporting all of the different phone specs and OS variations.
@PhilKenSebben I hope they nerf the crap out of the Frenzy Mode... Especially for Bowser!
@OorWullie jeez I hope not. A game like Dr Mario would be a perfect short burst time killer!! 😊
Wake me up when Dr. Blargg is in this.
This actually looks like the best Nintendo mobile game fit yet! Might give it a try...and I don't even play phone games. I own Switch, and I value my phone battery for being a phone, web browser, and audio player too much to burn it on games my Switch does better.
This seems to deviate too much from the original dr. Mario. Doesn't even seen difficult since you manually move the pill with your finger
After playing Mario Kart Tour in Mobile I've lost most of my interest in Nintendo mobile.
Controller please.
No micro transactions please.
@Reigestugatensho But I believe they mentioned timers for Mario Kart ... which is disappointing. I’d prefer anything to timers.
This looks better then expected, even if its free to play. Maybe a dumb question, but is there a way to download and play those mobile-games just on my laptop, and play them without a touchscreen?
I actually like the talking. Its corny, but in a good way. My favorite is the yellow one (yellow m&m, anyone?). He says: "that looks dangerous". And when the bomb explodes: "see". Lol!
