Sega may be playing catch-up with Nintendo when it comes to the whole micro-console business, but the news that the Mega Drive Mini would finally be hitting store shelves later this year has been met with a positive reaction – mostly because emulation expert M2 is involved.
Given that Nintendo followed up the NES Classic with the equally successful SNES Classic, it's tempting to wonder if Sega could create its own line of clone systems based on its enviable selection of '80s and '90s hardware.
Unfortunately, it's unlikely that we'll be getting a Saturn Mini anytime soon. Speaking to IGN Japan, Hiroyuki Miyazaki – a project leader on Mega Drive Mini – says any kind of system based on the 32-bit console would be years in the future, if it comes at all. He cites issues with emulating the console on the current generation of cheap, off-the-shelf 'System on a Chip' options currently available, which are simply not powerful enough for the task:
It may be possible in 10 years. By that time the necessary chips should be cheaper.
It might seem short-sighted of Miyazaki to be so pessimistic, but the Saturn's complex internal architecture has made it a real pain to properly emulate over the past 25 years, and even today, Saturn emulation is way behind PlayStation and N64 emulation.
Strides have been made with emulators like Yaba Sanshiro, but they're still some way off being totally accurate and software compatibility is lacking. The closest we're going to get to a Saturn clone is the upcoming Polymega, which appears to have Saturn emulation nailed down – but it's a PC-based system which is going to cost much more to make and sell than any potential 'Mini' release from Sega.
Miyazaki did, however, say that he'd love to create a Master System Mini – something which could easily be achieved with current low-cost 'System on a Chip' hardware. However, he admitted that demand might not be there for such a release; in Japan, the Master System (and Mark III, on which it was based) sold poorly compared to the Famicom, and it was the same story in the US, where the NES was king. It was only in Europe and Brazil that the console achieved any kind of commercial success, and those markets might not be big enough to tempt Sega to take a punt.
Would you like to see Sega make a range of 'Mini' systems? Let us know in the comments.

It's perfectly understandable, but people has already started demanding a Saturn and a Dreamcast Mini, and this will keep happening until and beyond Mega Drive Mini's release. No matter what the company itself says, as we can see with N64 Mini, denied by Nintendo but with a lot of people still believing it will happen.
It's logical too that Master System Mini doesn't see the light, if it wasn't so popular in the most important video game markets. It would be a chance for those people to enjoy it, but I understand why it's too risky for companies to bet on that probably too optimistic thinking.
Mednafen is about the best Saturn emulator I've seen but you need a decent PC to make it work.
Not surprised, the saturn is a pain in the backside to emulate
Maybe its because publishers are awaiting the community to emulate then simply "borrow" the code and use it themselves. Its an interesting correlation that all the mini devices have already very good emulators, and the ones that have not been emulated don't. The exception to this however is that god damn PlayStation mini which was better to root and install our own emulator rather than use what was supplied...
I will preorder any and all mini consoles SEGA is willing to sell me. Insert obligatory “shut up and take my money” meme here...
a dreamcast mini might acutally be interesting with the right games
I want the Dreamcast, not Mini, but manufactured the original version
Bug
Panzer Dragoon
Baku Baku Animal
Clockwork Knight
Virtua Fighter
Nights
Not sure I remember playing much else other than Sonic 3D and that wasn't much cop
I love the Saturn.
Of all things I want to play World Series Baseball 2
that was one of the best baseball games ever.
that and MVP 2005
Well, my most wanted titles were just Bug! and Scorcher anyway.
Theres tons of great Saturn games
Nights
Burning Rangers
Virtua Fighter and VF2
Sega Rally
Fighting Vipers
Fighters Megamix
Last Bronx
Shining Force 3 (all 3 parts)
Shining the Holy Ark
Die Hard Arcade
Radiant Silvergun
Panzer Dragoon, Zwei, Saga
Sonic R
Daytona USA
Guardian Heroes
Virtual On
Theres 21 without really looking at third parties or games like Virtua Cop and HOTD which might be too difficult to make work given the hardware.
I kissed the Saturn and my favorite game (Panzer Dragoon Saga) away last year... I've closed that chapter. I don't need a nostalgia revisit. In fact, I'm kind of done with the entire nostalgia trend. Don't get me wrong- I'd love to see sequels to the games I love, as anyone else would- but rebuying stuff with fewer compatibility options is getting old.
Side note, also kind of done with the "retro" trend. Bought Wizard of Legend recently... fun game, frustrating as sith to look at.
Pre-ordered the Mega Drive Mini. I’d buy every Sega Mini console system too. Saturn top of the list but I’d take a Master System one next year for sure.
Obligatory, I would love for BAKU BAKU ANIMAL to be released on a Saturn mini but in the meantime get it out on SEGA AGES for Switch.
Here’s footage of this awesome puzzle game.

so... dreamcast mini next ? if not i could settle for sega cd mini add on to the mega drive mini... and then 32x mini oh and powerbase mini too!
I'm a diehard SEGA fan. The Dreamcast may well be my favourite console of all time and I'll be first in line for the Mega Drive Mini. I even bought a ton of merch from the UK Sega store and I'm still waiting on them to stock the Beats T-Shirt from Jet Set Radio that the US store has.
But the Saturn sucked.
I'd prefer if they would just re-release classic Saturn and Dreamcast games on Switch.
Best way to emulate Saturn ? Buy one and replace the CD drive by an SD card reader (Rhea or Phoebe).
I love the Nintendolife card casually tossed on the Saturn: 'Oh yeah, this is OUR stash' puts on sunglasses and strolls away
I can imagine that’s true, the Sega Saturn is beast of machine to emulate. Luckily I have an original system with some cracking Japanese imports:)
Forget emulators, build the real thing.
All of these mini consoles have been a total disappointment. None had working cartridge slots, none are using real hardware, none are better than just playing it on a PC.
If there ever was a Saturn mini I would be on it in a heart beat. If it had texture smoothing and Panzer Dragoon Saga included then it would be a best seller.
I think the whole mini console fad is kinda getting old. It was a fun idea for Nintendo to do since many of those games were unavailable outside the Vitual Console. At this point people are just getting tricked into buying games 2-3 times over. Just release the games in cheap compilations on current gen consoles and be done it.
Saturn is the only system I never played when it was out. I'd be very interested in getting a mini if it ever was made.
The Saturn has one of the most incredible libraries of 2D games ever created, but most never left Japan. It was the final hurrah for 2D gaming, designed as it was to be a sprite scaling monster of pixel art. For a Nintendo crowd who are unfamiliar with it - it's essentially a SNES on steroids with some bolted on 3D abilities which were rarely used and best forgotten about.
The machine is phenomenally complex internally which is why so many games ran poorly on it. When properly utilised however it was utterly formidable. Emulating it has long been the holy grail for emulation authors, which is why I'm interested to see just how well Polymega turns out. They're making big claims.
I still have my original white model 2 Japanese Saturn hooked up to a Framemeister and use it pretty much every day. It's a truly superb system.
@StevenG
You're missing the point. Minis are for casual gamers who want a simple, cheap, plug and play solution for their living room TVs. They're not for the hardcore or the tinkerers.
Maybe they will one day announce it at e3 and that its out now. Just like the real satarns mess of a launch
Sega's going to do what they did the last time we were waiting on the Saturn! Sega CD & 32X mini attachments incoming!!!!!
If Sega ever does make a Saturn Mini I hope they bring back Segata Sanshiro to do commercials for it. Segata Sanshiro: "You must play Sega Saturn Mini!"
@Medic_alert @aznable
I'm kind of with you guys on this one. I too have unloaded most of my original "retro" games. I'm not a game collector, although there's nothing wrong with collecting. I have limited space for storage of games, and I now have a limited amount of time to play games. When I get a chance to play, it's usually a newer game. However, I do own the NES & SNES Classics. They are both small and easy to store and have a good collection of games so that when the retro bug bites, I just plug one in. Usually it's the SNES just because I can fire up the Switch and play the NES classics there instead.
Master System would be fun. Not sure I’d want accurate recreations of that terrible controller, though! I’d at least want options. It was niche in US but I owned one and loved it, so it’s just as nostalgic as the other consoles to me!
@Damo
“Sega may be playing catch-up with Nintendo when it comes to the whole micro-console business, but the news that the Mega Drive Mini would finally be hitting store shelves later this year has been met with a positive reaction”
That is not even just a little incorrect, that is completely false! Sega has had mini consoles on store shelves for years before Nintendo released NES Classic Mini. It is at least five years ago I first noticed a Sega mini console in toy stores here in Norway, but probably closer to seven-eight years ago. Nintendo and Sony are the companies playing catch-up to Sega!
@BornInNorway81 The AtGames abominations don’t count - Sega just gave them the licence, it was not hands-on with the creation. The Mega Drive Mini is the first time the company has seriously been involved with this kind of thing.
I've seen an original Mega Drive mini (with about 30 games included) 10 years ago. They came in very small boxes and were sold for 29,99€.
@ramu-chan
I’m as hardcore gamer as you get and I love my S/NES mini. They’ve had more play than my Switch this past year.
There's also the little problem that Saturn was a complete sales bomb.....that's like demanding a WiiU Mini.
Does the Saturn even have 10 games worthy of being labeled as classics that would be no-brainers for a plug and play console of this nature?
@NEStalgia at least if there was a Mini Wii U, I could easily come up with 20 to 30 games that deserve to be included on such a device. I can't even think of 10 good choices for the Saturn.
@StevenG
I recently tried setting up a Sega Genesis emulator on my gaming PC, and..... you'd be surprised how many problems you'll actually run into with that.
Back in the day, Sega Genesis emulators were pretty good and were very impressive, like Gens and Genecyst, etc. Today though, many of those older emulators don't work so well in modern PC's anymore. I think I tried several different ones-- Dgen, Gens, Gens/RS7, Ages, Genesis Plus, etc. The one I found that ended up working best in Windows 10 was actually Kega Fusion 3.63, which (surprise, surprise) was made by one of the guys who now works at M2. Lol. Even that one though was hard to play on, because there was a LOT of input lag, even using a wired controller.
The Genesis Mini is perfect for people that don't want to deal with all the setup of a PC environment, but just want to be able to play their favorite games and relive their childhood.
@duffmmann definitely have!! Like what someone mentioned previously, you can get quite a number critically acclaimed games (with some Japan only releases) Saturn was also a powerhouse for almost perfect port of arcade classics, with its expandable ram option bringing fluidity to many 2D fighting games.
Nights / Xmas Nights

While not a huge Sega fan, I would like to see Dreamcast get the "Mini" treatment. I think that system had such untapped potential but it had a lot of great games in its short life-span. Also, I did own a Game Gear back in the day and would like to have seen some kind of re-visit to that system (but maybe make it a software compilation release similar to the Switch release Sega Genesis Classics).
I’d LOVE to see a Master System Mini!! I was one of the few that actually chose this over the Nes. A clear difference in the graphics and being a fan of the Sega Arcade Games didn’t hurt! 👍
Do it Sega- many Nes Loyals May give it a shot to see what they missed!
@Sun_wukong oh man I loved X-men VS Street Fghter so much!
I'm good. I still have and play my retail Japan and US stuff.
@Lodmot people have moved onto android to emulate these days, far more easier than tinkering with Windows.
@huyi
I don't like gaming on my phone screen though, a full-size TV is my preference if I have access to it. I've tried installing Android-x86 as a dual-boot option on my hard drive, but their installer doesn't seem to work all that well for that. I can only really get it to run properly off my USB flash drives, and every time I shut it down and boot it back up all the settings are reverted.
I can't wait I really want to see this happen.
This is the only "mini" I would be interested in. Shining Force 3, Dragon Force, Panzer Dragoon Saga is all I need. Maybe throw in an English localization of Dragon Force 2, yeah buddy.
I would certainly be interested in a Master System mini, found it a lot more fun than the NES back in the day.
@Lodmot you can run emulators on the tv via android, via your tv or android tv as it's called, look up shield tv, you can even use any controller you want with android too.
@huyi
Ill check it out. Already preordered two Genesis Mini's though, so its not a concern to me. By the way, i dont condone preordering two of these consoles. Im a huge Sega hardware fan, so i freaked when i found out this was first party. XD
Not surprising but still disappointing. Very tempted by a Polymega just for the Saturn emulation, but waiting for reviews first.
That makes no sense. The PlayStation Classic is a console on a chip and the PlayStation is more powerful than the Saturn. The PS TV is a tiny box capable of rendering 128 bit graphics. Raspberry Pis can produce Sega Arcade Hardware games. How on Earth can Sega not produce a mini Saturn?
@Lodmot How many people who aren't nerdy enough to do it themselves care about playing old games?
@NTELLIGENTMAN
The PS classic is not a console on a chip. It's a normal ARM SOC running a software emulator.
@ramu-chan I don't think casuals care about old games. Not caring enough about gaming to want a mini and yet caring enough about it to play old games seems to make limited sense to me. Nintendo sold tons, but I think that was novelty and hackability.
@StevenG
PC is for browsing the internet and i prefer to use a Mac.
Shinobi Legions ( Shinobi X ) is over looked so much the last real Shinobi game.
@Sun_wukong
Shinobi Legions ( Shinobi X )
@Moroboshi876
Actually, the Master System was very successful and Europe and Brazil. It's only seen as a failed system for the same reason the US-only video game crash of the 80's is seen as global.
@Redbear I know, I know. What I said was that having been a failure in the US, not precisely a minor market, I understand why Sega isn't interested in releasing a Master System Mini, which would almost only appeal to European and Brazilian consumers.
When Is Sega Saturn Mini Coming
Sega.
