Just yesterday, an official poll told us that the water-type Pokémon Sobble was the most popular Pokémon Sword and Shield starter amongst fans. If you're also on #TeamSobble, or perhaps just a fan of the series in general, then this art piece may well appeal to you.
If you cast your minds back to last November, you may remember RJ Palmer, an artist working for Ubisoft who was snapped up to work on the Detective Pikachu movie. He was discovered thanks to his portfolio of 'realistic' Pokémon designs online, and has now created a new piece featuring the newly discovered Sobble.
You can check out the piece directly on Palmer's DeviantArt page, as well as all of his other work, of course. He has plenty of wonderful Pokémon pieces so we'd urge you to take a look.
It's a little too late to get Sobble in the movie, but this art certainly fits the vibe nicely. 'Detective Pikachu 2: The Case of the Disappearing Sobble', anyone?
Feel free to share your thoughts on the piece in the comments below.

I love realistic takes on Pokemon. I don't know why but it is nice to see what would they look like in our world.
#SobbleSquad
That looks amazing! kind of seems like a blue kecleon though
If you saw that in a forest, you would run away pretty damn fast.
@Octoguy You hate creativity?
@retro_player_22 I prefer the creativity of the original artist. This version went from cute to scary really fast.
Am I the only person who thinks the realistic version is adorable?
At least it's not covered in long fur for no reason like most pocket monsters in the upcoming Detective Deadpool movie.
@Preposterous I mean, I wouldn’t say this is vaguely related, it’s literally a blue, cartoony chameleon. Even it’s name in the other regions references chameleons.
@Octoguy Reminds me of berd's most recent video on Pokémon:
"Okay yes good wonderful I hate them all" lol
I mean... it's not too outragously late to add in a background pokemon to the movie. They still have quite a few months after all. Even a post credits things including the gen 8 starters would be dope.
People are acting like this is somehow terrifying, but it is literally a blue chameleon with a frill on its head. You must be very disturbed by real-life chameleons.
It's amazing how quickly the art style changed Sobble from "cute and cuddly" to "nightmare-inducing."
Good piece of artwork... I will never look at a Sobble the same way again though. Yet another reason for Scorbunny being the best!
Wait a moment did he do that in just 2 days?!
At least it's not hairy...
@ShadJV I'm referencing the entire portfolio with crab magnemites, bat ghastlies etc.
I think its really cute
Huh. The Barbary Macaque and Mediterranean Chameleon. They are European-native. Ya learn something every day.
@Preposterous I get your point. I will however say there are some that he does a really good job with and aren't just mere color slaps. I also feel like if someone took the property too seriously and wanted to make some gritty interpretation, that's the direction they would go in
Nice work, as usual!
@Preposterous yeah, I don't know what's up with this guy. It's creative, I'll give him that, but I'm betting the few designs I'm disliking in Detective Pikachu (furry Jigglypuff, no belly division of colours in Mewtwo, overtly scale Charizard) were made by him considering his tendency to downplay the original shape of the Pokémon.
Other than the colour and fin on its head, it looks nothing like it. Nowhere near the same body shape or proportions. If you gave me that photo and asked me to name the pokemon it's based on I'd be hard pressed to recognise it aside from the fact it's a recent reveal.
oh its RJ Palmer! He is really famous for his realistic pokemon...they are horrifying. I highly suggest looking at all his work.
Sobble's secret Game Freak origin story:
"Hey, that new Pokemon you're designing... it looks like Bob from Bubble Bobble. We're going to get sued."
"Don't you worry about that. They'll never see through my elaborate naming ruse!"
The guy definitely has some drawing skills, no question about that, but this is one of his lesser efforts, where it concerns looking like its actual inspiration. It may be true that the name in other regions actually refers to it being a chameleon or chameleon-like creature, but I'm just not feeling it in this particular image.
It leans too real animal to feel right. I'm sure if they did get into the movie(s) they would give them a lot more passes to feel right.
@link3710 I do. I think it's adorable. I don't know why on Earth people think that is scary.
@Rect_Pola this is his personal work, which takes the core concepts and bases of Pokemon and tried to work them into something that could be kinda real world. It’s really clever some of the ways he’s translate much more abstract Pokemon like Voltorb and Magnemitr. Worth checking out!
For the Detective Pikachu movie they have kept the silhouettes and cartoon proportions, which I think works much better for the film. It’s a very different aesthetic to this
@Preposterous I think the way he takes things like a Magnemite and figures out how a collection of screws and magnets around an eye could be translated to a real world, organic creature that the previous cartoon version could have been interpreted from is very clever and he does it with a great level of polish. It’s a fun side project that a passionate fan does in their spare time, and hey it landed him a movie gig in the end! Might not be a style to everyone’s taste but it’s well researched and well rendered, there is very little random about it.
The problem I have with some of their stuff is that in trying to be realistic, he's done stuff that makes them nearly unrecognizable. I'm not on board with the purists that don't think Pikachu or Jigglypuff should have fur. But they basically turned Onyx/Steelix into some sort of basilisk, rather than a pseudo-magical creature made of segmented stone/metal with a magnet in its brain.
I don't see why this wouldn't be in the movie. Im sure these states have been done for a while.
Looks very nice.
