During the latest financial briefing Q&A summary, Senior Managing Executive Officer Shinya Takahashi and the one and only Shigeru Miyamoto were asked about how consumer preferences factored into the success of games based on existing IP and titles offering new types of play experiences that weren't necessarily as popular, in terms of sales.
Here's what Takahashi had to say:
“It is true that consumer preferences are becoming more varied, but when we make games, the most important points are how we will make each game enjoyable for consumers and how we will create sources of fun, and I see no reason to change that. That said, games are being made differently now in comparison with the past ways of game development before the Internet and some other aspects of the current era, and we are constantly aware of those changes and thinking about how to incorporate them. So I think it is best that we keep thinking of ways to mix the old with the new, to incorporate new ways of thinking and to bring forward any old ways of thinking that are still valid appropriately.”
Miyamoto added to this with the following:
“I don’t think Nintendo developers are hung up on the classics and unable to develop anything new. You do not have to worry because we are capable to respond to the variety of preferences in today’s world.”
He went onto explain how Nintendo took a bold approach to the creation of new games without fear of failure. The current generation of gaming is also apparently a “dream situation” for the company because of the sheer number of consumers who now have access to games and a better understanding of digital media, meaning a good idea can quickly lead to huge success. Miyamoto finished up with the following comment:
“I realized that consumers come back at any time if we leverage these characters and create fun products. Placing value in areas like that is the essence of our IP strategy. It’s not about clinging on to series titles, so please look forward to our offerings in the future.”

I love Nintendo for being different and willing to try new things. However, I don't think they actually do care about what the consumer wants. We'd love classic Nintendo games on our Switch at a reasonable price. We don't like paying for the same game several times.
I'd love to be proven wrong though. Allow me to play Paper Mario: Thousand Year door on my Switch legally please! I think that is fair given both your history and what the competition is doing.
Miyamoto : not hung up on classics and able to develop something new!
Here's star fox zero it's the same as all other star fox games because I did not know what to do with the franchise?
That's pretty hilarious as they have been totally ignoring consumers wishes for years.
Important things missing on switch
Native voice chat (no phone app that only works with a handful of games).
A universal invite system at system level to make it easy to jump into games with friends.
A messaging system
Netflix
Folders
Themes
An internet browser
Servers for online games.
Virtual console.
Switch online is not a good deal.
If Nintendo actually cared about what consumers want they would do something.
They are too busy counting money.
It's not hard to make a voice chat app for the switch.
Discord even offered to do it twice.
I am on the verge of selling my switch as many friends have since we can't communicate with each other after nearly 2 years.
People play games online with their friends these days.
Nintendo need to understand that.
@Apollocreed good points but no need to sell your switch over it. Just use Discord on your phone - it works brilliantly with just a pair of earphones.
I've always maintained that a TV screen and a (joystick) Pro controller and a good game is all we need.
Nintendo seem more interested in designing games to play on their latest system and to include all the gimmicky that goes with that system.
Improve the console and controller gradually with each new release like Sony and Microsoft do. And keep games as the important part of game playing.
Wii controller, balance board. Wii u controller screen, things 3rd party developers were not interested in. Playing games were awkward and gimmicky.
Depending on Nintendo's next move the Switch will become another system to be written off and the system after that will be released.
The Switch is a hybrid console that seemingly after two years has lost its direction.
It looks like 3d games will go the same way.
Nintendo caters to a wider range of tastes than any other developer does. They probably couldn't do it any more than they already do without spreading themselves too thin.
@andykara2003
Yes I can use my phone.
I shouldn't have to.
Why use 2 devices when you can use one.
When I finish work my battery is drained.
I could use a work around with Bluetooth headphones to my phone.
This is the point.
Nintendo don't care that I need to use a work around and buy new hardware to play on their system.
I should be able to plug in my headset to my switch and chat.
They don't like to copy what Xbox/PlayStation do.
Well playing with friends is easy on those systems.
On switch it's a frustrating nightmare since there isn't even a universal invite system it would work differently on every game.
I have many friends with a switch.
All of them own another console to play online and won't use their phone to chat not should they have to.
It's a mess
@Mailman Like a new Wario Land? Because I'd be down for that.
"If Nintendo did everything fans wanted, they would give us this long-list of stuff."
I'm sure they would if they had infinite amounts of time, money and staff to do it. They need to prioritise things.
All I want my Switch for is games, no Netflix, no browser, nothing.......
However, I hope there’s a Direct soon showing us what’s in store for the year as after Yoshi, there’s not much else on the horizon.
Sure, there’s a steady stream of indies but a glut of those are metroidvania, roguelite etc. not something that really interests me.
Games like Gunman Clive set an example, infinitely repayable and a great price.
As a 43 year old and a long-standing Nintendo fan I’d kill for Switch versions of Pilotwings, Starfox, F-Zero, any Mario IP etc etc.
I’ll happily hold my hands up and say Switch is my favourite console currently on the market but Nintendo needs software to keep the momentum up.
Oh the other thing is what are you paying for with switch online?.
A voice chat app that's compatible with about 5 games out of the 1000 plus available.
No servers for online games
Cloud saves that don't work on every game.
Used to 3 nes games now 2 a month which I and many switch owners have no interest in.
People that want those games have probably bought them many times on previous systems.
Compare that to games with gold or PlayStation plus which yes is twice the price but they are high quality new current generation titles you get.and you get 3 or 4 a month.
Doesn't sound like a great deal does it.
People seem to be constantly comparing the Switch to the PS4 or XBone. If people want the gimmicks those 2 consoles have why not just buy those 2 consoles? If people want the gimmicks the Switch has, pick up a controller, have a Coke and shut up.
Nintendo is an entertainment company first and foremost. And they do just that. They entertain. I choose Nintendo for their great quality of games and their ability to innovate beyond the normal joystick. Personally, I hate online games with voice chat and steer clear of those anyway so Nintendo's current setup is good for me.
As for Netflix, I have 4 other devices capable of playing Netflix, and if you include Google Chromecast, that number is doubled.
While I would like to see other features coming to the Switch, I think what is already there is an amazing accomplishment in itself.
Sooo... Real Paper Mario game?
@LavaTwilight totally agree, I’m not sure why there’s this continued obsession for Netflix on Switch!
@LavaTwilight
Firstly I don't consider playing games online with my friends a gimmick.
It's a prerequisite for a games console in 2008 let alone now.
I had to buy a blu ray player to watch it netflix on the TV since I sold my PS4 which played everything.
Should I have to buy a tablet too?.
Because the device I own won't play it?.
My phone is too small to watch it in bed.
I have my switch next to me which I play games on.
I should be able to use that like every Nintendo console since the Wii played netflix including Wii u which was a sales disaster.
If you don't want to use it there then dont but for many people like me it would be a welcome convenience.
People need to stop chopping Miyamoto for Star Fox Zero His hit to miss ratio is otherwise better than most all game creators that ever were!
@Mailman Yes, please! A new Mario bros. in 2D with original content, that is what we are waiting for since... Super Mario World on the Snes. 28 years!!!
@Medic_alert
I am by no means a hard core gamer.
If I was if be playing on other systems.
What I want mostly is to be able to play games online with my friends and chat to them without external devices and fuss.
And I don't think it's the minority that wants that.
Yes it's about the games.
I've had switch since march 2017 and not played a single game online with my friends due to those complications.
So as usual Nintendo's gimped online is limiting the console's potential.
all my friends and colleagues have an Xbox or PlayStation to play games online.
Not one of them plays on switch.
Because I don't have an additional console I can't play with them.
Tell me thats not a problem.
@Lord comments like yours are entitled opinions of someone to poor and young to afford games.
Also I'm glad you're all so ungrateful for Star Fox Zero since that's likely going to be the last Star Fox game .I hope you remember that you spat in his face; after you ask why's there no Star Fox Game .
All I want is to play Super Mario Sunshine on my Switch. Is that too much to ask?
@LoveEmpath but the game wasn't very good.
You can't really blame that on the consumer.
Instead of abandoning the franchise maybe re-examine it and say how can we do this right.
#firstworldproblems
@Rodan2000 Not much after Yoshi? What? Okay, let’s go through this. First and second party gives us Fire Emblem, Animal Crossing, Luigi’s Mansion 3, Daemon X Machina, Pokémon Gen 8, and then post 2019 we have Bayonetta 3, Shin Megami Tensei V (not sure if that counts as second or third party but it’s definitely an exclusive) and Metroid Prime 4. Also, Retro have almost definitely been working on a game since 2014, and now they’re moving to MP4 an announcement should be on the horizon. Then, if King Zell is right, we also have ports of Pikmin 3 and Boxboy and a new 2D Zelda. Of course, those last few are unconfirmed but I’m pretty certain of them. Nintendo is bombarding us with exclusives this year, while Microsoft won’t be able to match it (obviously), I think Somy might simply because of Last of Us 2, Death Stranding and Ghosts of Tsushima all might release this year. Even then, I’d still give it to Nintendo.
@Rodan2000
Well I did just state my reason.
I don't own a tablet and I would like to watch it in bed on a device bigger than my phone
I appreciate some people have other options but just because you won't use it it doesn't mean it shouldn't be there for people that will.
Wii u had it,3ds has it,Wii had it.
It's now more popular than ever so why shouldn't switch have it
@Apollocreed Totally agree! If there is one thing I hate about Nintendo, is that they completely ignore customer's wishes. /shrug
They would have re-released Super Mario 3D World and/or Super Mario Maker, instead of Super Mario Bros/Luigi U! For example.
What about Pikmin4? Or wait almost 2 years into Switch's life before finally announcing Animal Crossing.
What about improved UI features, like Themes? Or that web browser people asked for?
@Lord The Star Fox Zero controls actually changed the way the game was played, drastically. That’s why a lot of fans were turned off from it. But once you got the gang of them, the gameplay really did open up. Unfortunately, the level design fizzled in some places.
I can't be that hard core as I haven't played a game online since switch launched and switch is the only console I own.
Servers is important for long distance play as anyone who has played say smash Bros online will have had huge lag issues and noticed some matches are great and others are a slide show even if they don't know why.
I think the voice and party chat is the most important thing as that is preventing people from playing games online with their friends.
This has been acknowledged as a problem since their terribly received voice chat app was introduced.
@EasyDaRon @Medic_alert
Well to use an example you can see when your friends come online and even what they are playing.
But without using your phone you have no means of communicating with them so what's the point.
So you say use the app?
It only supports a few games and If I'm using the phone why not use WhatsApp, hangouts, Skype, discord,text messaging ect.
See how pointless the app is.
@Medic_alert
Oh I wasn't talking about servers for everything just games like smash or arms that would benefit from it.
You're correct most games will be fine with P2P.
They need to put that subscription money to some use.
“I don’t think Nintendo developers are hung up on the classics and unable to develop anything new. You do not have to worry because we are capable to respond to the variety of preferences in today’s world.” [...] “I realized that consumers come back at any time if we leverage these characters and create fun products. Placing value in areas like that is the essence of our IP strategy. It’s not about clinging on to series titles, so please look forward to our offerings in the future.”
So, can you please leverage the F-Zero IP?
If you say so I haven't played the game online.
Maybe that wasn't a great example.
I was more meaning competitive online games where the response time and lag is an issue as it has been in smash.
It probably depends on your proximity to the other player.
Just out of interest have you played arms with anyone overseas?.
And how was it?
Takahashi (general manager of Nintendo game development) and Miyamoto (the former general manager of Nintendo game development, now just an advisor) aren't the ones who work on or care too much about Nintendo Switch Online or extraneous non-essential Switch features.
Take your frustrations elsewhere.
@Mailman
i would love that, side scroller with more depth in it.
@LordMolecule,
That is what you and a small internet minority want,it's not indicative of the wider market,If there was a massive market for a virtual console service then Nintendo would cater for it.
And for the ports of Wii U games that Wii U owners have already bought,these games are not designed for the people that bought them in the first place,they are made for the 33 million or so Switch used base..which is massive compared to the.
@Apollocreed Switch has a heavier focus on local multiplayer than online multiplayer. Your criticisms aren't unfair exactly, but Nintendo's not wrong to ignore them either. You're not necessarily the market they're aiming for, and that can be frustrating. Their core selling point is to be able to play together, in person, anywhere. It's a portable/console hybrid. That's the point. It's a fantastic family machine for this reason.
And as a second system for most hardcore gamers, because let's be honest, if you want the latest and greatest you own a PS4 too, as a second system, online on Switch also plays second fiddle. Generally speaking, if I want that experience, I boot up my PS4. If I'm on the go, I grab my Switch. Could Switch benefit from a more seamless online? Sure could, but the gains won't be as big as people are making them out to be. Does it work in its current incarnation? Sure does, which is good enough since it's not the core focus of the system.
@Mailman Was thinking exactly the same just yesterday. I'm hoping that Yoshi will scratch that Nintendo platforming itch but we do need a new and original Mario 2d platformer.
@Beermonkey @Mailman I think that if Nintendo hired new people to create 2 to 3 new EAD teams, they could made that happend without outsourcing teams that are likely making other games because, why else they haven't release more new 2D Mario games? Not to mention that they need to improve the 2D Marios just like they did with SMB3 and later they did that with SMW. I now they can do it again just like they did in those consoles. They just need new people with ideas that can spices up the New Super Mario Bros games.
Being the core focus is not really the point.
You're saying I shouldn't be able to play switch online with my friends and chat to them too in 2019?.
Where does the subscription money for switch online go?.
Dragging and dropping nes games into an emulator?
Nintendo’s innovation has been sorely lacking lately. Smash is a polished version of the WiiU game.
But why should they do anything different? Nintendo fans line up to buy Super Mario U deluxe at full price.
@NoxAeturnus
As far as me not being their market I've been playing Nintendo games since the super Nintendo.
But I live in the modern world where I have a job and a child and my friends do too.
It's not practical for me to go round their houses regularly.
So while I like playing local games with my daughter I also want to play online with my friends when she is sleeping.
Nintendo know we want things like voice chat. But they are that set on being different for thesake of being different that they won't offer voice chat through a headset.We could have had everything in the first year(internet browser Netflix cloud save) if Nintendohad not have had this be different than the rest attitude.
In response to Miyamoto-san's statement, I have to disagree somewhat. A lot of Nintendo's games are essentially the same thing:
1. Bowser kidnaps Peach, Mario has to save her
2. Ganon kidnaps Zelda, Link has to save her
3. Space Pirates and Metroids threaten galaxy, Samus has to stop them
4. Andross threatens Lylat System, Star Fox has to stop him
5. Octarians steal the Great Zapfish, and some Inkling has to rescue it
Aside from gameplay differences, in the story department, there is pretty much nothing new.
If you ask me, the formula is getting really stale, and Nintendo really needs to freshen it up, maybe with new characters, new villains, new stories, etc., if it wants to stay relevant in the 21st Century.
@DannyBoi they are in a unique position where they can go the cheapest route.
I mean think about this: Something that is stale, sooner or later becomes boring. That is what is happening with the 2D Marios. And yet, at the same time it doesn't need to be completely different. That's why the 2D Pikmin failed and also the reason why each new New Super Mario Bros have decrease sells one after the other. Sure, New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe may sell better, but that's because many people didn't buy the Wii U. My point is we need new people and ideas that can give a breath of fresh air to the New Super Mario games while at the same time doesn't derail too much to what made 2D Mario so good. Like the people said: Everything in moderation.
No offense to the guy, but Miyamoto is about the last person who should make that statement.
@westman98
I'm aware of that but they are still senior management making public statements about how they listen to the customers.
But how about asking them?.
When was the last customer satisfaction survey or poll about what features you would like on switch or how you think switch online could be improved?.
Xbox and PlayStation do them regularly.
So they tell us what we want but don't ask.
Same as Reggie says we have a voice chat app because nobody wants to carry a bulky headset.firstly most people don't play online in a public place as the connection is too unstable.
Secondly I might be at home and want to use my headset.
Thirdly bulky headset?.
I have a pair of earbuds with a mic in my switch case same as most people probably do.
And if he read or cared about the reaction to that statement they would have addressed it.
It's utter nonsense.
@Kainbrightside I am happy for the enthusiastic Duck Hunt fans (;________________;)
I think that Nintendo should do more polls and surveys so that that they can improve some of their games like the NSMB games and evade giving us things that have flopped like the 2D Pikmin to name one example.
Nintendo warming us up to new IP released this year. Exciting!
If they combine new ideas, with making surveys every year, we can have better games that will increase the sales of the next new games. We may finally get that Super Mario Bros game that a lot us have dreamed to have. They just need to open to new ideas and ask us what we think that needs improvements. They have listened to us when we criticize how linear was Skyward Sword and they responded with Breath of the Wild, so they can do it again for the Paper Mario games, Star Fox games, Kirby games etc.
@subpopz This has been a problem for Nintendo since day one. And yet the wii u had this basic functionality.
@Rodan2000
People said the same thing about having a DVD player on the game cube. It's not necessary but it does add value. Having Netflix on my ps4 is great and I use it for Netflix and Hulu all the time. Sometimes my job sends me away for a month at a time and I would love to just pack my much smaller switch but the reality is I'm bringing my ps4 instead.
As for lack of voice chat, how are people even attempting to excuse that? There's no reason why I shouldn't be able to get an invite from my friends to play a game, easily jump in and immediately be able to talk to them. We're not going to load up Skype, we're going to load up our playstations.
For those saying voice chat isn't important why do we have companies like vivox announcing plans to support it in development kits.epic games saying they will enable it for developers to use on their games for free this year.
And Microsoft planning to bring Xbox live to the switch.
Basically these companies have recognised a basic need that Nintendo is ignoring.
But then you would have to actually communicate with customers for that like Dan adelman did...oh wait they fired him for it.
@Apollocreed I have a simple five step process to solve your issues.
1.) take a deep breath
2.) go back and read this entire thread
3.) realize that you seem to be the only one in this particular thread making the points you are trying to make rather than generalizing for the millions of other Switch users.
4.) understand that your only posts on NintendoLife are on this single thread.
5.) stop trolling this group
You’re welcome.
Pointing out Nintendo's shortcomings is trolling now?.
And no I'm not the only one voicing these opinions by far.
Not just in here but on YouTube and most games outlets.
@Apollocreed
My only posts are there as I just joined the forum today.
Also this is what I feel needs to be addressed.
I'm not bring negative for fun.
I would like to enjoy playing my switch online with friends.
After 2 years I can't.
That is very frustrating
@SamusLv7 Would love to see a proper paper Mario art style platformer maybe using UbiArt Framework.
@GhostGarrity
Skype which works on the significantly less powerful playstation vita.
Which has a tiny operating system footprint but works in the background while playing games and chatting with earbuds plugged in you mean.
@Beermonkey Since I haven't played the Wii Paper Mario, I can't comment much on it but I have heard good things about that game. I hope that type of Paper Mario and also the first two Paper Mario games are what Nintendo has in mind when making future sequels.
@Lord it's not the same. The other ones were good.
@Apollocreed No need to get your knickers in a twist - I agree with your points, Nintendo needs to sort it out. I was just saying that if it's come to the point of selling your Switch, there is another easy option that would enable you to keep the console & have access to future games.
@Apollocreed Hahahaha those games PS+ gaves you are not free: as soon as you don't renew your subscription, they get blocked in your console. It's twice the price, and it gets hacked all the time, accounts get stolen, it crashes regularly, it's a BEAUTIFULLY awful service. In Italy, just recently, Sony lost a lawsuit for it.
@KingdomHeartsFan
Yea i know quite a few people who did the same thing for the same reasons.
It's a shame though because they make great games and I like the portability.
But I'm tired of playing alone.
@Edu23XWiiU
Well I can only speak for my experience.
I had a PS4 from 2013-2017 and didn't have any of those problems.
Being a dad and not having much TV time the switch was more convenient but I went from playing with friends to playing alone all the time and I'm more of a social gamer.
@Edu23XWiiU I regularly use the service and have played a couple thousand hours online. The service is reliable and embarrasses what Nintendo offers. Yes it goes down....as do cable sevices, phone services etc.
@Apollocreed
Just playing games online doesn't make you a "hardcore" gamer, dude. In fact a lot of my co-workers who only play online games don't really know anything about the gaming industry, and I can never really have interesting conversations with them about it. I play tons of retro games, big singleplayer adventure games and RPGs, try to 100% most of the good games that I play, I follow gaming news, subscribe to gaming YouTube channels, and have favorite development studios. I'm the most hardcore gamer (God that sounds dumb) I know irl, and I dislike online gaming now that I'm older. Local multiplayer with my friends and family is much more fun than talking to people online, in my opinion. For instance my fiance and I went to a family gathering and all of the cousins and I had a Smash tournament and ate pizza recently, that experience would not have been as fun if we did it online.
I do understand that I don't speak for everyone, but most people who know anything about Nintendo's platforms know that they've always been behind with the online stuff. If that's more important to you than fantastic single player and local multiplayer games, just get a PC and play on Steam. The thing is, it doesn't seem to be bothering people as much as you are overexaggerating it. The Switch is selling like hotcakes and is the fastest selling console of all time in the US. People know what they're getting with the Switch, and they love it. I've only ever heard people say bad things about the Switch online, and never from people I know irl who actually own one.
@Spudtendo
I'm not speaking for other people I'm speaking for myself but I have many friends with a switch and they either don't play online or they sold it to play other systems online.
Not sure how it's over exaggeration the facts are the facts.
I also don't talk to strangers with voice chat I'm saying i like to play with my friends and work colleagues.
People have bought switch despite these issues but it doesn't mean they are happy about it.
I'm one of that number but I will most likely be selling it due to these frustrations which could be easily solved and were by Microsoft in 2001.
You say you know Nintendo are always behind with online but does that mean we should accept it forever?. or push for change.
This is the modern world we live in.
They never charged for a online service before.
Now they are and nothing has changed and we get the same excuses.
Sorry it's not good enough.
Problem here is the people's views of what they want can vary from the same line to line that doing so would ruin the fun of just gaming. They have to take what is mosted voted and go with that. Otherwise trying to do a one fits everything would never finish making the game.
@Apollocreed
I'm not saying people shouldn't request it, but acting like online multiplayer is the making or breaking point for a Nintendo platform is silly. It simply isn't as big of a deal as you say it is, most hardcore gamers own more than one platform anyway, myself owning a gaming PC and Switch. If I wanted to play online multiplayer games that aren't first party Nintendo games, I'd just play on PC. The thing is that I don't these days, and why I'm playing my Switch and modded SNES Classic way more than I do on Steam.
You act like the Switch will fail without a good online experience, but it's doing just fine without it. Would the Switch be better with better online multiplayer? For some people, yeah. I didn't buy my Switch for that, I don't buy Nintendo platforms for that. When I say over exaggeration, I mean just that, because you act like people are so fed up with Nintendo on the online front when sales and reception prove that those people are the minority.
@Apollocreed
Also, the president of the company said they're going to focus on improving the appeal of the online service this year F.Y.I.
I have a feeling your opinion was cemented before coming to this article, though, so I doubt it'll change your tune.
@Apollocreed
"Native voice chat"
which is coming soon with fortnite's built in tech. (not likely first party games though)
https://www.ign.com/articles/2019/02/05/nintendo-switch-fortnites-built-in-voice-chat-tech-coming-to-more-games
"A universal invite system at system level to make it easy to jump into games with friends."
something we can both agree on.
"Netflix"
something Nintendo doesn't even own, so they would have to get Netflix to agree on bringing it.
"Folders"
would love to see.
"Themes"
would love to see, as well. wish they let us add any background like the PSP did.
"An internet browser"
a lot of devices uses it. don't think the switch needs one. but it's your idea. 3DS internet browser wasn't that good anyway. and i didn't use the Wii U's browser that much anyways.
'Virtual console."
it's there. but only on the Nintendo Switch Online SNES games has been data minded so maybe will see that soon?
"They are too busy counting money."
so is every other video game company.
@Apollocreed Meh......don't waste your time arguing with company apologists. Just let them keep being strangely sentimental toward for-profit corporations and their anti-consumer decisions.
The point is the app should either be 1st party or allow Skype or discord to do a native app.
A netflix rep actually said an app was ready to go sometime ago but Nintendo weren't interested as they were focusing on games.
Yes the other companies count money but they also do surveys for customers asking you what you think could be improved or what requests you have for added functions.
That is the big difference.
Actually asking the customers what they want and doing it.
Yes I believe SNES games are coming but how about something more modern like GameCube.
I think a browser would be handy for bringing up guides or maps and such but I would make it low priority compared to the major things missing.
@Spudtendo
I did read that but I think that's why SNES games are being added to the service.
I am not asking the world am I?
How hard is it to make a native chat app or just allow discord (who offered to make one),Skype hangouts.take your pick
I'd like Nintendo to make their own shooter. Something a bit more mature.
@Spudtendo
I didn't say it will make or break the system.
It's selling great as it is that's no secret.
Why give your competitors a reason to buy a rival console?.
Some people are saying I'm in the minority.
Look at this way.
What reason is there to not have those functions?.
What meaningful features have been added since launch?.
Then tell me what features PS4 or Xbox don't have that you would want?.
I can't think of any.
So why not please all of your customers then there is no argument.
@Spudtendo
Also I don't have a pc or another console to play on.so for people who don't these are necessary features.
I already bought a blu ray player for netflix since my PS4 I have used to do that.
I shouldn't need to keep buying more hardware because Nintendo don't want to spend money or effort (which people are
paying them for)on enabling basic functions on their console.
Many people here are treating Nintendo customers as a single entity that have uniform tastes and preferences. This is obviously not true. It is difficult for a company to meet each and every demand, especially with a customer base spanning many generations, each with different gaming experiences.
Personally, I dont see the need for Nintendo to engage with adding media apps like Netflix to the Switch. There are numerous other devices, including televisions, that already have this. Id rather they put more time into the meat and potatoes of IP and R&D, not copying what has been done a million times.
I do get frustrated with their hubris over keeping their back catalogue accessible in a way that makes sense, but this is a business, and all investments need to have a return. Is there going to be a huge return in 2019, in the world of fortnite, to give us Mother 3 or (insert retro port) on the Switch? I would hope so, because a good game is a good game, but unfortunately there are shareholders to appease.
Outside of the online service and lack of their first party retro offerings, Nintendo is largely doing a great job. Its only been a recent slip in the past couple months, with the lack of communication about 2019 that has been annoying. I dont know if this has to do with the new president or not.
@Mailman Can you elaborate on what you think that would look like? It is kind of hard to think of something that has nailed the genre so well. Personally, I would like one similar to the style of Super Mario World but with more mechanics.
@NinjaWaddleDee Yes. It does not have to be with blood either. I think the multiplayer in the 3DS Kid Icarus Uprising was going in that direction. Or even a Splatoon game that allows you to play arena mode with bots (similar to Timesplitters).
@Apollocreed yea indi games is what PlayStation fives
@Apollocreed The February offerings include the competitive melee action game For Honor and the full first season of Hitman. That latter game has an extra layer of value since the recently released Hitman 2 lets you play the older game's maps inside the newer game, as long as you own it. February PS Plus also includes Divekick and Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots for PS3, along with Gunhouse and Rogue Aces for Vita. Divekick has cross-buy with Vita, and both Vita games have cross-buy with PS4. Sony also announced it is expanding the PS Plus Cloud storage from 10 GB to 100 GB starting in February.
Remember, you still have some time left to grab the PS Plus games for January. Those include the the extreme sports game Steep and Portal Knights on PS4, Zone of the Enders HD and Amplitude on PS3, Super Mutant Alien Assault on Vita, and Fallen Legion: Flames of the Rebellion on PS4/Vita.
And with that, the PlayStation 3 and Vita games are bowing out of the monthly rotation. Sony previously announced that it will no longer include PS3 and Vita as of March 8, which means February's games on those platforms are the last we'll see. Fare thee well, older platforms. This will probably mean the total games included in the monthly rotation will be reduced, though Sony could still surprise us with some change of plans. The PS4 games will be available through March 5.

That's a mighty fine list there
Ah jeez, just scrolling through the comments was a nightmare and a half. However, since ive got no life whatsoever and too much time on my hands ill shove my WITTY opinion into this. First, i believe nintendo is listening to their consumers, in some regards at least. I think the main problem is that a lot of people, NOT ALL OF THEM mind you( i really want to stress that point) are overlooking the good nintendo is doing out of pure anger at things that are quite petty, except for one issue, but ill get to that in a moment. Alright so first, the lack of a decent voice chat system and lack of internet browser and netflix. To be blunt, the switch doesn't need any of this. While yes netflix, an internet browser, and a good voice chat system are great things to have, they aren't needed. Allow me to remind everyone that the switch is a GAME SYSTEM, not a tv to watch netflix on, not a telephone to chat with friends on, and not a computer to search things on. While some would say a system lacking its own voice chat system would be idiotic and flat out DUMBBBB, there are other things that can be used, such as discord or skype. Remember, the switch isnt perfect, it has its limits and its own purpose, to play games. Same with netflix, theres hundreds of different ways to watch netflix, and its a 100% garentee that everyone has at least one way or another to watch netflix. And the lack of an internet browser is honestly a good thing in my book, because lets be real, who actually used the internet growser on the 3ds or wii u? It wasn't really all that good. Now on to the one problem that has quite a lot of merit, nintendo abandoning certain IPs in favour of more popular ones. While i find it sad that nintendo is abandoning less popular IPs, it makes sense from a buisness point of view, its better to make games for franchises that sell a lot more than ones that don't. And while yes, a new mother game or f-zero game would sell like hotcakes, i dont think it will happen anytime soon. And again, people are overlooking the good games nintendo has released, breath of the wild, mario odyessy, lets go pikachu/eevee, the glory that is smash ultimate! I think if accept the switch for what it is, a game system, then everything will be fine.

@Apollocreed I hear what you're saying, but just because you've been playing their games for a long time doesn't mean you're part of the market the Switch is aimed at capturing. I know what it is you want, and there's nothing wrong with wanting that thing, but what's the value to Nintendo as a business? As you've said, the system is wildly successful right now. What incentive is there for them to invest in making their platform more like the experiences found on other platforms when they have a "good enough" solution already in place? Someone who enjoys online multiplayer gaming almost certainly owns a PS4 (or an XB1...but honestly, why?), where there're loads more amazing online multiplayer experiences - and hardly a local multiplayer game to be seen. The hybrid nature of Switch is its unique selling point, and hitting the section of the market that enjoys local multiplayer is a smart move, and ultimately that makes online multiplayer a secondary feature for Nintendo. However, if what they're providing is a dealbreaker for you, then you're not enough part of the market the product is aimed at. It is what it is, and no amount of complaining on internet forums is likely to change it any time soon.
There are always new customers to be gained.for instance I sold my ps4 due to wanting something portable.
If you have the same features there is no need for switch to be a second console.it can be your only console.
Many people want to play Nintendo games and they can't be enjoyed on rival consoles.
They shouldn't give people Reason to not have one.
I work with over 120 people.
Many have a switch.
They all have other consoles because the switch doesn't provide what they want.
The other thing is you say what reason to do it?.
How about keeping your existing customer base happy.
So they won't defect.
Once you are in a console ecosystem it's hard to get out as your purchases I think will move with you next generation.
So if Nintendo lose me as a customer and I buy Xbox.next generation I will probably go where I can play my old games are.i think that's the big picture.
@misterMike ah, i see the error of my ways. i posted that as more of a joke than anything but i now realize that this isnt the place for a joke.
@SamusLv7 Well i'm glad they don't solely make what they think fans want them to make as i really enjoyed the 2D Pikmin game, it's a lot better than the reviews made it out to be, sure i'd like them to listen to fans a bit more, but not exclusively, otherwise we'd never get games like Splatoon for instance.
Please understand....
@diablo2
Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft, Valve, Activision, Ubisoft, EA, Bethesda, etc. are all for-profit companies that regularly make anti-consumer decisions. Nintendo is not unique in this regard, and if you think so, you're extremely naive.
@Spudtendo
The netflix situation is that I'd like to watch it in bed on the device I own and my phone is too small.
Not the same for everybody but I'm sure I'm not the only one
I don't do microtranctions,games as a service or competitive games online.
I simply want to buddy up with friends and chat and play cooperatively.
Cheers though
@MysteryCupofJoe Yep, I know people say Splatoon is Nintendo's shooter, but I'd like something a bit more traditional you know?
Well my battery on my phone is always drained when I get home from work.
Plus my friends rightly think they shouldn't need 2 devices to do what should be on one.
It can be done but it's a work around we shouldn't need.
The point is it's not convenient which Nintendo should be thinking about.
Also baring in mind that I and most people I know have no interest in nes games or probably even snes games...what an I paying Nintendo a subscription fee for again?..using my own internet for p2p
@Toadie I am not saying that they should exclusively. What I am saying is that some games like the 2D Marios need improvements that they don't seem to understand because they don't do surveys every year. Also what does making a new IP has to do with listening to what fans want to have in the current franchises? If they want to create new IPs that's completely apart and doesn't have anything to do with improving some franchises.
@Apollocreed
Some of the best games of all time are on NES/SNES, but to each their own. The dedicated server argument is a dead end one, because PSN and XBL are both $60, and no first party PlayStation game has dedicated servers, and only a select few do on XBL. You're only going to see dedicated servers for live service type games, and even then you will be subject to lag if your connection is bad. You're paying Nintendo a fee to play online (a fee 1/3rd the price of PSN/XBL, even cheaper if you go in on the yearly membership with friends/family. For instance I only paid $7 for a year) because consoles are stupid like that, playing online is free on PC.
Yes but I can see where the money goes on PSN and Xbox live.implementing new features and paying for lots of current generation games and previous gen games on Xbox
Where does this money go it isn't spent on system updates and what does it buy you?.
I remember the SNES fondly by the way but not enough to pay a subscription to play the games.
@Doger
Great post and well said.
Well I'm in the UK and here Xbox live and PSN are twice as much as switch online not 3x.
But games like God of war,hitman cod,rise of the tomb raider, assassin's creed,are priced around £10-15 here even used.and you are getting 2-4 a month.
And the subscription is £40 a year.
2 or 3 old nes/SNES games do not in most eyes amount to the same value especially as their appeal is much more limited.
Ok people read this thread for many more honest opinions and not mine.
https://www.neogaf.com/threads/nintendo-plans-to-boost-switch-online-after-surge-in-short-subscription-plans.1472158/
I'm not seeing too many happy customers.
No it's famous for being a gaming forum.
If you read the thread the people commenting are switch online subscribers.
So their opinions dont count?
And a over YouTube?. minorities too?.with thousands of likes on their videos?.
Are you saying minority opinions aren't important either?.like people on YouTube all their subscribers or neogaf?.or this forum or people I know.
Wow there sure are a lot of minorities.
None of their opinions relevant eh.

Official switch online overview video from Nintendo.
67k dislikes and 12k likes.
Irrelevant whingers?
Um that's the official Nintendo video.
Now people on YouTube can't get a job?
You could amuse yourself by learning some manners
Since I haven't been rude to you or anybody here I am merely stating my opinion and pointing to others opinions.
Not sure why that upsets you so much
I have a switch.no I wasn't uninformed I just thought that when they introduced the paid online service which took 1.5 years after the launch (which is when I bought it) that they would have the functions you expect from a paid online service.
the functions required to actually play online with friends.
Right oh.end of discussion
voice and party chat? If you got a phone and Discord, you got it already.
You can point at a lot of different things and conclude, yes they are, or no they aren't listening. It just depends on what is important to you.
I don't care about any of it. Just give me good compelling games to play on quality hardware and Nintendo has consistently done that for a majority of my life.
@Spudtendo Did I ever state otherwise? or even implied it?
Hold on, let me re-read my original comment............
.....................reading...................
Conclusion: Nope, never said / implied it.
Funny how Nintendo is saying they're completely aware of the consumer complaints/preferences yet they do nothing about it.
Switch online since launch has been complete garbage and the arguments defending it are laughable.
"b-b-but it's only $20.."
@astrofan1993 The gameplay differences are pretty significant. The way Mario saves Peach in Super Mario 64 is enormoursly different to the way Mario saves Peach in Super Mario World.
I'd rather Nintendo prioritises new styles of gameplay and mechanics than simply a different story. I'd argue it'd be much staler if each new game was a completley different story and characters...that played exactly like a game that already existed since it's essentially the same experience with a different coat of paint. As opposed to a new experience with a familar coat of paint.
@iLikeUrAttitude
Actually it was only $7 for me since a few of us went in on it together c; If you'd pay $60 for it to be more like PSN/XBL be my guest, but $60 to play online, which is free on PC, is utterly ridiculous. I'll take it being cheap over getting some games that I didn't bother buying when they launched and only add them to my library and not play them.
@apollocreed uhm, you can play online with friends, and i mean yeah its a slight nuiscance(i can spell!) to not be able to use the switch app for many games, but thats no big deal. Im honestly confused on what you're trying to get at
@Apollocreed lol yea right ill take mario 2 over them anyday
@iLikeUrAttitude well it is only 20 bucks.I would agree if the service has been put a year.3 months going on 4
So that’s why the Switch OS doesn’t have folders, themes, proper data management and Virtual Console. That proves how much they “hear” from users.
Almost two years now.
@Apollocreed
I totally agree. I rarely play switch games with friends because the process of inviting/chatting is so terrible.
“I don’t think Nintendo developers are hung up on the classics and unable to develop anything new. You do not have to worry because we are capable to respond to the variety of preferences in today’s world.”
How many 2D side scrolling Mario games are there? Or mainline Pokemon games (cause they are all the same)? Thats not even touching the Online Service, yuck.
However, when Nintendo does make something new, it is quite enjoyable and unique, like ARMS or Splatoon. That being said, can we get a Hero Shooter?
"We are constantly aware" except for when it comes to a well working online service or getting rid of the terrible app.
@misterMike
I don't think PSN is a bad service, far from it. It's objectively a better service than NSO if you care about the kinds of games you get (I don't), but I promise you PSN, XBL, and NSO subscriptions would greatly diminish if they didn't lock online play behind them.
For me, if I want a game I'll buy it so free games isn't much of a selling point especially since by the time they're added to the service, I've lost interest in them. At least with NSO you're getting games you can't otherwise buy on the Switch, even if they're old roms. It's also by far the cheapest service between the three, so it's less intrusive and I don't have to think about it too much. Yeah PSN is better if you want to pay more for it, but I personally don't and as a PC gamer, don't understand why people forgive these guys for locking a feature that should be free behind a service.
@misterMike https://community.eu.playstation.com/t5/PS4/Account-hacked/m-p/25702046 and this is from an official forum. Am I lying?
@WOLF13 https://community.eu.playstation.com/t5/PS4/Account-hacked/m-p/25702046 Am I lying?
Wow....I didn't realize Miyamoto had a Reggie Mode! What happened to the days when if something Nintendo was leaked, it was probably Miyamoto?
@misterMike
It still doesn't excuse that online multiplayer isn't free on consoles. I can play with friends for free on Steam.
@misterMike Hahahaha still, that's a problem that present in Sony's service, not Nintendo.
@WOLF13 I don't see any problems with Nintendo's online service.
@misterMike Hahahaha you have a prosperous life with your mediocre and expensive Sony service.
