Limited Run is known for offering physical Switch games in limited supply. Its latest deal is a bit different from the usual offering. Available from 1st January 2019 for $29.99, the 2018 blind box promotion gives Switch owners the chance to purchase one surprise game and trading card from the company’s collection.
In total, there are seven common games, two uncommon games and two rare games. Each customer can purchase a total of five blind boxes and Limited Run assures potential purchasers it has done its absolute best to minimise the chance of receiving duplicates. If you’re really lucky, you may score a rare Limited Run Games autograph card and there’s also the chance you could receive a one-of-a-kind printing plate card.
Below are the full details:
This blind box contains one random game from our past Nintendo Switch physical releases and one random trading card from our collection. There is a possibility that your box could include a one-of-a-kind printing plate card, which is an actual metal plate used in the production of our trading cards. You may also receive a rare Limited Run Games autograph card - which can normally only be obtained by meeting a member of our team in person.
We have done our absolute best to minimize the chance that you will receive a duplicate game if you order multiple blind boxes. Nintendo Switch blind boxes are packed in cases of twelve and each game in each case is unique. The chance for duplicates only exists when we have to open a new case pack to finish an order. Please note that placing multiple separate orders for blind boxes may result in a higher chance of duplicates since those orders may not be packed out from the same case.
Each blind box has a gatefold design for an awesome unboxing experience. The gatefold holds the trading card on the left and a window on the right side allows you to see the cover of the game inside the box. Make sure to have fun while you unbox these!
The assortments of games are as follows:
- Common (86% of boxes): Flinthook, Mercenary Kings, Slime-San, Saturday Morning RPG, Night Trap, Kingdom, Thumper
- Uncommon (10% of boxes): Thimbleweed Park, Oceanhorn
- Rare (4% of boxes): Yooka-Laylee, Furi
Due to the random nature of these items - no returns or exchanges are accepted, all sales are final. We can not take requests for specific titles because we do not know what is in each blind box.
Are you game enough to put down for some cash for a surprise physical release? Tell us below.

...why on Earth would anyone buy this?
Yes because I love throwing away money....
If they just told us what games we can get...
Thimbleweed park anyday... I pass...
@Ralizah There’s people for everything.
Loot Boxes: The Real Deal!
"We can not take requests for specific titles because we do not know what is in each blind box."
"We have done our absolute best to minimize the chance that you will receive a duplicate game if you order multiple blind boxes."
These feel like contradictory statements. How can they minimize duplication if they don't know?
Is this an attempt at the Mystery box crap? I'd rather spend $30 on a game I know I'll get and like
I only have two I need.. I own all physically but Thumper and Kingdom. Annoying I can’t just buy those two.
@TheDanslator they contradict themselves and their business model all the time. The most frustrating company I deal with. Celeste is gonna be my last purchase with them for a while
Price is way too high for this sort of gamble.
Spend $60 and get 2 copies of Vroom in the Night Sky.
Who has $30 to fritter away!? This is crazy. I wonder which game they have bucket loads of. My money is Mercenary Kings.
Sure, because a person wants to spend $30 on a copy of Saturday Morning RPG, the thrilling RPG game that looks like a Newgrounds flash game from 2003.
They don’t have enough top-tier Switch games to make this a worthwhile gamble. You’ll probably end up with Outlast or something.
Somebody has been drinking too much eggnog.........
Unfortunately, their sending fee to Europe is way to high. Only did it for Golf Story because I really love that game (and the sound track, so I bought the LP). But for some random indie game I will not throw away my money and this absurd sending fee.
I honestly kinda like this, though I can see why people are going against it. Just a bit of spice of the unknown. I mean, it will give me an excuse to actually play these games, because recently for indies, I've only been buying the best of the best not giving a shot to the lesser known quantities. I guess it's just the demon of oversaturation.
What I do dislike though is that night trap is there. It just shouldn't honestly, the idea of it was fun, but it's definitively not a great game.
"Nintendo Switch blind boxes are packed in cases of twelve and each game in each case is unique. The chance for duplicates only exists when we have to open a new case pack to finish an order."
How is each game in a case of 12 unique when there's only 11 total games on offer? Especially when 4 of them are supposed to be considered rarer than the other 7. Something about this doesn't add up.
When regular Limited Run scams just won't do.
I'm assuming this is their way of getting rid of the leftover stock of the games that didn't sell well, considering most of these games aren't anything special (I do love Kingdom though). A bit of a low business practice to exploit the type of people who fall for this sort of thing. I've never bought from Limited Run games and I was on the fence about the Celeste one but I'm officially off the fence now. I'll save my money.
From how LRG is handling this - my money is already for CelesteCE right now and can't waste money for something I already have let alone get a special trading card or signed one or plate card. I already got the CE of those why would I spend more knowing full well I won't get a special plate card. Their own statements are contradictions of each statement. Common LRG why not just put it out there for people to buy as for the special cards and plate card why not just make it a time buy when it opens to buy it if your fast enough to click to buy it. Doing what is going right now is just a thinly viel let's sell what we couldn't sell the first time out. Now if those were CE which I doubt they are just standard cases that make it less worth to buy them let alone know you get probably two of the same game since it say they don't check as well. As other said how can you know and not know at the same time?
don't y'all realize you could flip these games for a profit on ebay?
@CharlieSmile Ohhh you are a genius!
They could just count how many copies of each game they have and sell them as such, but I guess they had to get rid of their excess copies of Thumper and Night Trap somehow.
Meanwhile, I've been waiting four and a half months for West of Loathing, and it isn't even a special edition.
@BenAV : They always order extra as any cartridge orders need to be placed with Nintendo to the nearest 1000 copies. Additional copies are used for replacements and the like. I have no idea what else they do with them (other than this blind box crap that they're trying to pull).
Still waiting to hear about their Wii U game. They were going to announce it in November, however there is currently a lawsuit with the publisher. Hopefully it's resolved soon and they can announce it. Just curious what it is....
Loot crates and boxes are a scam, this promotion is no different. 🖕🏻
These games are sold out and no longer produced so if you don't have them it could be worth a shot. No duds on the list
Pure money grabbing
@TheDanslator @Stocksy I'll be honest, I hate this idea and won't buy it, but they explain how they minimize the chance of duplicates on their website.
Each blind box has 12 games in it, with no repeats. If you order multiple items in the same order, they will pull the games from the same box, meaning no repeats. If you place multiple separate orders, you increase the chances of getting a duplicate, as they would not be pulled from the same box.
@roadrunner343
That makes sense. Thank you for providing those details!
@IHateTombs
FYI, these are not items that failed to sell.
Nintendo Switch games from Limited Run Games are made to order up to the nearest 1000, and they keep a certain number of units for replacements if an order is lost or damaged.
What they're selling are the leftover replacement stock.
How about noooooooooooo.
@IHateTombs
"Items that failed to sell" is an impossibility here, because of the open pre-order system.
Items are ordered within a 2 week pre-order period, payments are upon pre-order and non-refundable, and then fulfilled as soon as the items are manufactured, packaged, and shipped.
@IHateTombs Say 5500 people preorder a game from them. They order 6000 from Nintendo, they have 500 extra incase someone wants a replacement incase the delivery company damaged the package. Say 50 wanted a replacement. They have 450 of that game left. Those 450 did not fail to sell. They are leftovers from possibe replacements.
Some might be sent to influencers to promote LRG, the rest ends up at sales like this.
Stupid offer. If the games were $15 or $20 maybe as at least that makes them cheaper than they initially were on sale for. At $30 most of the titles are the same price as they were in the initial release except this time you can’t pick which one you’re getting. You’d have to be a big Limited Run fan to be interested in this, at which point you likely have the games anyway or enough that a random dip has a bad odds you’ll get one you already own.
Blind "box"
When I saw box, I was thinking more than one game in the box. So no buy from me. And not spending $50 for one ($40 Canadian plus $10 shipping).
I just stick with selectively buying the ones worthy of owning physically.
Will be ordering Celeste and Windjammers on January 1st as a combined order.
I’ll buy one for $5. But $30, tell them they’re dreaming.
I cant afford the lucky dip approach to game spending. this practice seams dumb to me but they will sell no doubt..
Why don't they just put them up for listing and see what gets purchased so what are they so afraid of now? I think something fishy is going on here and if they have inventory put it up for purchase. I think they are trying to make money the hard way. I do think this is to make a quick buck off buyers since they said no return so that would be suspect already.
If the lottery of games had were 50% or more, games I'd like to have, then I'd be interested. But there are only 2 games in the whole list I am remotely interested in.
I also kinda feel like Limited Run Games is a little confused. We aren't interested in them, we are interested in the games. And I for one, am not a fan of the artificial rarity created by deliberately making a limited supply. This sort of thing does nothing but encourage scalpers, who buy all the copies and then sell them at double the price on ebay.
This is an intresting way to get rid of the trash.
I've already got/ordered all their games. So not for me
Got my collection and not worth me buying games when I already have the CE version. If those were all CE versions that be different but it's not. And Plate cards or Cards isn't going to make me spend money just for that reason.
The only SURPRISE is the seller raking in the $$$ the buyers will get buyers REMORSE instead.
@VHSGLITCH Nintendo Switch Online is still a bigger scam.
@TheAwesomeBowser No.
@VHSGLITCH Yes.
