Yooka-Laylee originally began life as a Kickstarter project and went on to become the fastest video game project to reach the one million dollar mark on the crowd-funding platform. This followed with its eventual release on the Nintendo Switch and multiple other systems in 2017
According to a tweet by the official Playtonic Games Twitter account, Yooka-Laylee has now been played by more than one million people. As no other details were provided, we can only assume this latest milestone translates to the combined digital and physical sales across all platforms.
Here’s the tweet below:
In the short period this spiritual successor to Rare’s Banjo-Kazooie has been available, the chameleon and bat have come a long way - making a cameo in Brawlout and even receiving their very own comic.
Are you one of many people who have played this game? Did you buy it when it was released on the Switch? Let us know below.

A pretty male heavy environment lol. Anyway, congrats to the team. I’ll get round to this game at some point I’m sure.
Time for a proper physical release with wide distribution
Kudos, it was a great game
I ordered the LRG physical edition. Can't wait.
Played the first world and lost interest, but I guess that counts.
I rented this from Gamefly during a free 1 month trial, both my sons and I played it. How do they account for that?
Number played is weird unless they have access to account information from Sony, Nintendo and Micrsoft. Besides Gamefly Redbox I believe also had this on PS4 and my library had it.
I'm going with "random large round number guess" on this one.
@KIRO haha yeah. Might go down at least diverse photo of 2018.
“Give the girl the plush toy no one will notice”
I don't care for the game, but I hold no ill will towards Playtonic.
This game's commercial success should lead to them developing more 3D platformers, which I'm down for.
@GrailUK me too!!! Not played it yet on any format and can’t wait. Order standard and special edition
Game was mediocre to me
Well I'm not one of the million
Picked up a copy in a humble bundle recently. The game is quite beautiful on PC and runs at a solid 60fps.
I'd pay $20 for it on switch. Still waiting for that discount. Usually I don't mind the switch tax but with this game being a 6-7 out of 10, and being much cheaper on other consoles I'll wait for the eventual 50% off discount.
@Stocksy Hehe, well you beat me on that front mate Just the standard for me.
shocked its only a million players, if it was exclusive to switch and came out on it first, I think they would have smashed a million easy! Obviously i understand it was kickstarter, but i havent got it on switch because its too expensive and its like a tenner elsewhere but the only platform I would play it on is the switch.
Congrats to the team its a huge achievement regardless, dont know why but i expected it to be at a million a while ago!
@Mooj738 it released to very luke warm reviews and technical issues.
@Moroboshi876 it is getting a broader release through Best Buy. Can pre-order it now. I purchased it from Limited Games in August and looking forward to receiving it soon.
I said proper and I meant it. Available wherever other games are too, European release...
@MarzipanD yeah i know the way it came out. Still for how many devices it was released on makes you think how right you have to get it
I bought it from the eshop on release day here in Australia, actually just a day or two after I had purchased my Switch. Was one of the first games I owned [besides BOTW and Super Mario Odyssey]. I like the game but not nearly as much as I love Banjo-Kazooie.
Just waiting on my physical from Limted Run, then you can add me to that list. Whenever that is....
I couldn't wait to get this game when it arrive on PS4...unfortunately, it wasn't the greatest that I thought it would be and I lost interest in it with almost anything else that came out. It was a gorgeous platform title, but it could have been better, but I also wasn't a big fan of the Banjo games. I guess I'd rather have a newer Conker's Bad Fur Day title, but if the company can create more platform titles like this, I'd be fine with it, considering that it seems to only be Nintendo and Sony that continue the trends with platform titles that are great anymore. Kind of miss the heydays of the Wii, Gamecube, PS2 and Xbox where there were platform titles galore! Heck, I loved playing Dr. Muto!!!!
And I am waiting for my Physical to arrive to even start trying the game.
I am not part of that million.
I wanted to love the game so much. I liked the first world but it gets progressively worse. So much bad design in with the good.
I've got to say that's not a great return considering the legacy behind the game in the first place. I was one of those backers and whilst I have no regrets I will say that it's trying very hard to be Banjo & Kazzoie 3 but it never recaptured that magic. However now they are free from that I do hope that they go on to make more 3D platformers but with a lot more creative freedom
Haven't played it yet. I held out for a physical release and my "Limited Run Games" copy should be shipping sometime in December.
I agree with Moroboshi876 above: It would be nice if there was a proper retail release for this title (not website exclusive or small batches at Best Buy, etc.).
Regarding my expectations: I played through both Banjos back when they released for the N64. I LOVED those games. But I played through both of them to completion in the past year (on Rare Replay on Xbox). I believe by doing so, I've tempered my expectations appropriately. That is, the Banjos were great games, but they are by no means "perfect" like my rose-tinted nostalgic glasses had me believing before my recent playthroughs... The original Banjo especially had a fantastic atmosphere that I doubt can be re-captured. Heck, Banjo-Tooie couldn't (in my humble opinion).
Now with my expectations in check and more realistic, I will hopefully enjoy Yooka-Laylee for what it is.
@KIRO It's lame but that's just the nature of the discipline. More males are typically interested in computers and gaming. As a software developer myself, most of the classes and jobs I've had have been flooded by males. Most companies strive off diversity but if almost all of the applicants are males, then most of the employees will end up as males. Like I said, it's lame but it's just the way it is. I doubt Playtonic is sexist or anything.
I played it after getting it in a recent humble bundle...
it feels so unpolished, they should have spent more time developing it...
I was disappointed in it, but I still feel it was a good game. At the very least, I think they're in a great position now to deliver something special if there's ever a Yooka-Laylee 2; all the foundation is laid for something great, they just need to polish it more.
I know what to expect from it: a good, but flawed game that'll tickle my nostalgia bone and give me good fun while it lasts. I don't need every game to be AAA quality to enjoy it and I never say no to a good collectathon platformer ^_^
I just wish LRG would hurry up with the physical edition already >.>
Just waiting for my Physical copy from LRG to arrive! Played it on PS4 but i can’t wait to play it on the platform it should have been on!!
I am glad to hear this. I hope they are working on a more polished sequel or a new game that takes things to the next level!
Not my sort of game at all but good to hear that it's done pretty well, a great start for Playtonic. Onwards and upwards.
The reviews put me off, that and the high price, more than I would spend on a downloaded game. Had the game originally been a budget price physical release I would have bought it.
Marketing for this game was not good, bad reviews, a delay for the Switch version, and when it was released at a high asking price the PS physical version was on sale for £14.99. The Switch version then had mixed updated reviews about the fixed version.
And if after this post I thought I'll give it a go, it's has not even got a black friday price discount.
Also it's rather subjective to say a million people have played it.
YL is a decent game, feels like a relic from another Gen... like early 2000s.
I'm glad that the update to Brawlout that added yooka laylee also made the game much more playable. I redownloaded it, and actually plaulyed for a couple of hours! It was a major difference. reasonable load times, singular currency, it's like a proper game now.
@zool actually the game plays wonderfully on switch (there were gameplay issues on the other platforms that were dealt with before launch on switch). The game is worth the price and way better than overall talk suggests (as long as you expect a banjo clone that is all that they promise to do)
Yep and I love it
Cool. Can't wait to try it myself.
I've got my digital copy on Switch, I love it!
@Balta666 that's reassuring from someone who has played it. I would like to give it a go, but I don't buy downloaded games unless the price is reasonable, because it has no value once played. But when it's in a sale I will.
