In a week relatively quiet on the Nintendo release front, third-party titles have once again charged their way to the top of the UK charts.
Call of Duty: Black Ops IIII takes the top spot this time around, with a dramatic fall in physical sales over last year's edition suggesting that the general shift to digital is getting stronger and stronger. FIFA 19 is also unsurprisingly hanging in there at the top, where it will likely remain for quite some time.
On the Nintendo side of things, Super Mario Party has dropped to number seven this week with a 45% fall in sales. This isn't quite as drastic as it sounds; Assassin's Creed Odyssey sales have dropped 54% this week, and Forza Horizon 4 has dropped by 67% in comparison. The World Ends With You: Final Remix is the biggest Nintendo console title to enter as a new release this week, debuting at number 21.
Here's a look at this week's top ten all formats chart (physical sales only):
1. (New) Call of Duty: Black Ops IIII
2. (1) FIFA 19
3. (2) Assassin's Creed Odyssey
4. (New) WWE 2K19
5. (3) Forza Horizon 4
6. (4) Spider-Man
7. (5) Super Mario Party
8. (8) Crash Bandicoot: N.Sane Trilogy
9. (6) Shadow of the Tomb Raider
10. (11) Mario Kart 8: Deluxe
Did you buy any of these chart-topping games this week? Have you treated yourself to Super Mario Party yet? Let us know down below.

How's WEWY doing on the eshop though? I want to support but a bit tight on cash
Still not bad
OMG, GTA V not in the top 10? Has everyone finally bought it now?
Not bad, being in the UK two weeks in the top 10 for Mario Party is good going. It's the land of Fifa and COD and soon to be Red Dead Redemption again.... The last two are not even on the Switch. Thats why Nintendo really needs it's exclusive games to sell well. Good third party support also is hard to come by. They need to advertise Diablo 3 and Starlink with the Starfox exclusive content in my view. Both need to sell well over the next few months. If not serious third party support may wither.....
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is still in the top 10. I'm calling it now, it will be the best selling Switch game when Nintendo announces Q2 numbers at the end of the month.
"Call of Duty: Black Ops IIII takes the top spot this time around, with a dramatic fall in physical sales over last year's edition suggesting that the general shift to digital is getting stronger and stronger"
Or the better but less likely alternative, people are becoming bored of it.
Tsk....
The 1st position right now = Worst game in the Universe.
Pathetic...
The gaming taste that sooo Absurd.
Wow, GTAV and Minecraft are really not in the Top 10? The world might be ending
@Anti-Matter You question others in gaming taste?! Really?! You?!
HAHA that is funny!!!
@OorWullie Activision reported a big increase in digital sales yesterday
TWEWU sold way better than I was expecting (even though is most likely to disappear already next week) for such an expensive and lacking port
@Anti-Matter just saying, black ops 2 might be the best FPS of all time, and bo4 looks like it might be even better. Also just face reality. It’s a AAA budget game that just released. It’s gonna be number 1.
@Mando44646
Let's we find better gamer community with BETTER gaming taste.
Probably they still like smaller games that Actually Really Fun & Healthy than those Top 3 games above.
At this rate, the gaming taste on UK right now is BEYOND the Absurdness.
They know NOTHING about Healthy Fun games.
The drought is real. Just look at that top 10. Switch users have nothing.
@OorWullie It's a multiplayer only game. It makes sense that people buy it digitally.
@ButterCup
A garbage AAA as usual in my eyes.
They said number 1, but i don't think so.
I saw the Reality is Suck.
I don't even like at all.
I see something Much Better than those games above.
The Healthy games for Everyone and Family are the Best choices for me.
The World Ends with You, though I like it, is more niche than things like FIFA and COD.
Though I haven't liked COD for years, I understand why it remains strong. It's just too well known, too established. People know what to expect when a new one comes out and they know other people know. Meaning they can trust there will be people to play it with. I might jump of the bandwagon of bashing them for releasing the same game every year, but in a big way, that's actually a strength.
I am mature enough to understand that whether a game fits my personal taste or not, that doesn't mean it's good or bad. I wish other people shared that opinion...
Also, lol, people saying 1 week without a major new release on Switch is a drought... like, where were you guys during the Wii U years when we'd go months without a notable title? There's plenty on the Switch, it's just that people are too lazy to even consider something that's not a AAA major release.
What surprises me is people still get irate when a AAA blockbuster game, with huge advertising and massive fan base reaches number one.
You know, it's quite easy to not get flustered and just go and play the games you like.
@Heavyarms55
Um...
If i can say, some gamers are "I'm Too Old or Too Cool to play Kiddie / Casual / Fun for Everyone games".
And that's why their EGO will NEVER meltdown.
@Anti-Matter so you've played it?
@Anti-Matter Healthy Fun games...huh?
@geordie
Some peoples are NOT following the Mainstream / Popularity.
There are some Anti-Mainstream / Anti-Popular gamers out there.
@Mando44646
Yup.
Healthy Fun games are games that can be played by EVERYONE (Young, Old, Boy, Girl, Anyone) with Lesser violence level and More Family oriented theme.
Never really played CoD, just too boring for me, but I know alot of people like it.
Nice to see Mario Party still there, I know Nintendo isnt that big in UK so I would take this as a win
@IBeAGamer
I DON'T and I WILL NEVER EVER play that Evil rated 18+ FPS games !
@Anti-Matter you have either not read or understood my comment properly.
I couldn't care less for the new COD but I don't get myself in a fury just cos it's number one in a chart.
I'm not bothered if a game is mainstream or not, I'll play games I like.
You seem to think only adult things can be mainstream, do I need to spell out how wrong that line of thinking is?
@Anti-Matter oh your one of those people.. anti mainstream just for the heck of it.
I don't play COD anymore because i played to many already but if you can't understand why people like it, try hitting yourself with a frying pan until some cells start working.
There is simply no competition in that genre it does what it does well with 3 beloved modes. Battle royale, zombies and normal multiplayer.
@Anti-Matter If you are "Anti-Popular" or "Anti-Mainstream" you hold one of the most ridiculously indefensive positions possible. I play far more indie/non-mainstream titles than AAA, but hating something simply because it is popular? That would be ridiculous.
Furthermore, how do you think you are remotely qualified on what makes a good FPS game? As someone that admittedly does not, and will not ever, play such horrendously evil video games, I would say your opinion on the entire genre is null.
That said, as someone that has not played CoD since CoD:MW, I've been really enjoying BO4. Of course people will hate it because it's popular, and even more so because it includes a BR mode, but all of the included modes have been a great deal of fun so far. Granted, I'd probably be sick of it if I purchased annually, but as someone that hasn't played CoD/Battefield seriously for a decade, I have no problems saying I really enjoy this game. Even if it is popular.
@roadrunner343
I DON'T & WILL NEVER play any FPS games.
Just only saw the screenshots, it just made me pissed off.
Lol. This comment section is gold.
I was gonna add to it but maybe next weeks chart
My switch is a mario machine
picture uploading sites
Unrelated, what's the minimum age limit for commenting on this site?
@Anti-Matter Great. Then don't pretend to understand what does or does not make a quality FPS game.
@Anti-Matter thats cool...I guess? But most of my favorite games wouldn't meet that category, if you're going by the typical Nintendo approach to games
@1UP_MARIO
Ooh...
I have All those Mario games.
But i still haven't bought Super Mario Party.
Well.... i want to buy a Japanese New 3DS / 2DS LL in November 2018 so..... i will buy Super Mario Party later.
The COD games were some the best couch multiplayer games on the Wii U. Player vs player, gun game, one person the gamepad, the other on the tv.
I also play CoD MW3(which they gave away for free on PS+) locally, great fun.
Now that I think of it: where are the split screen multiplayer FPS games on the Switch?
COD at #1 was expected. Another port of TWEWY (at an insane price) not doing much at retail, also expected.
Not played a COD since the one where you run out of an exploding ship at the start (whatever it is called)... But that is why DQXI, Torna, Valky4, TR, RD2 and AC:O are all on the schedule... For the rest of us.
I rather read a book than play COD or a bunch of mindless Mario Party minigames. Why you always need access to the biggest selection of games possible.
@Heavyarms55 Yeah...COD is just plain bad. It's lowest common denominator. The campaign can be a fun hollywood blockbuster romp like being your own action hero, I've enjoyed a few of the campaigns, but this one lacks any campaign at all anyway. While multiplayer FPS isn't my favorite genre, I like the genre well enough that I've played almost every franchise from the Doom, Quake, H-L era, through Battlefield, Destiny, Wildlands, Splatoon, Titanfall, The Division.....COD still remains near the bottom of the list in all criterion to me.
It's popular because it's popular, it's accessible, and simplistic. Not because it's a good example of the genre. Sure top tier players do amazing things, but those players could also do amazing things with much more sophisticated games. They're not what makes the game popular. It's the mass market that doesn't play many video games that makes it sell so well. It's Wii Sports with guns. The campaign was the best part.
@Anti-Matter "Tsk....
The 1st position right now = Worst game in the Universe.
Pathetic...
The gaming taste that sooo Absurd."
This once, and this once only, everyone on this forum strongly agrees with your opinion on gaming taste! Well done!
@NEStalgia I'm genuinely curious, why is it so far at the bottom for you? Don't get me wrong, if you were to ask me about franchises as a whole, I'd agree with you - I like pretty much all the ones you listed better. I quit playing CoD after CoD4, mainly because it got stale and stopped innovating.
Admittedly, I decided to pickup BO4 primarily for the Blackout mode, because I really like the concept of BR, I just really don't enjoy Fortnite's gameplay and PUBG is so buggy and maneuvers very poorly. That said, I've been enjoying all of the modes, but again - I'm coming off a decade long break from the franchise. BO4 in particular (I can't speak to the entire franchise) feels like a perfectly competent, high paced FPS game with a bunch of great game modes. Obviously, if you're not big on online multiplayer, it wouldn't be the title for you, but otherwise, I can see why it remains popular. There's just no way I would ever purchase each annual release. Once a decade feels about right for me =)
Picked up TWEWY this week even though the controls on TV are admittedly impossible. Playing handheld is still a blast and the updated soundtrack and visuals make it even better. Once I get onto the new content I'll see how much it adds.
@Anti-Matter If you hate all FPS games, does that mean you hate Borderlands or just the online versus ones?
@Royalblues Horizon 4 does look amazing and I will hopefully get it soon!
@nessisonett
I mean ALL, ALL of them.
For Splatoon case, i don't hate it , just not interested since it made by Nintendo and targeted for kids but still.... FPS games are forbidden in my gaming area.
@Matthew010
Oh, sorry.
I didn't meant that.
@Anti-Matter It's OK, but just try to be more considerate when posting.
I hope WEWY does well but I have to save my money for Diablo 3, Civ 6 and Smash.
You know the comments are going to be fun to read when an
M-rated game is mentioned
@Royalblues I LOVE FORZA! What's the Switches best realistic-racing game?
Can't anyone just play Mario Party or Yu-Gi-Oh? All I need is legacy of the duelist switch
Pretty terrible retail performance by COD BOIIII in the UK. It needs a 60%+ digital attach ratio to approach the launch sales of last year's COD WW2 (which had a 23% digital attach ratio).
At this point, only Red Dead Redemption and Smash Bros Ultimate will be the big sales surprises of the year. Maybe Pokemon Let's Go as well, if the resurgence of Pokemon Go can pull in casual players during the holidays.
@1UP_MARIO Great collection, I have the same apart from Mario Party. Is it worth getting for the single player alone?
21st for TWEWY isn't bad considering it's a pretty niche game and it came out on the 12th, and this chart only goes up to the 13th of October.
@roadrunner343 It's a game that just doesn't really do anything particularly well. It feels like it's own Tencent knockoff. It's a sort of easy listening version of a genre, that does very well at being a generic shooter, but has nothing that gives it any particular hook as to why you would play that shooter. DOOM has it's insane speed and the classic bob and weave of close far for melee/shotgun range. Splatoon borrows more from Doom than most but mixes it with squad play and platforming. Wildlands thrives in the idea of deliberate, strategic operations of recon/scout/plan/execute with actual siege tactics. Battlefield captures the hook of a large scale operation with dozens of grunts all doing their part in the larger theater in a coordinated way. R6:Siege isn't my thing but it's an extremely tight close coordination squad game (voice chat mandatory.) The Division is an excellent close quarters tactical operation with a very well thought out cover system (surpassing even Gears.) Halo comes from the Quake/Half-Life/UT/Q3A school or fast, aggressive, video-game multiplayer. Each one picks a general concept that informs the rest of the gameplay. COD can't decide if it want's to be a Quake/Unreal style run and gun, a Battlefield type large scale operation, or a The Division type tactical game. And as a result it's kind of a generic mishmash of lite versions of all the above concepts without really making much use of the experience any of them can provide. If it were music it would be Muzak. It borrows from the list of all the nameable elements of other better things, and blends them into one Forest Gump experience while totally missing anything that makes the others interesting or intriguing and becomes generic background content. If it weren't already popular thus the "I play because my friends play" effect of online games, I'm doubtful most people would actually choose it. It also, has an infamously prepubescent audience no doubt gained in part because it is a relatively easy to understand game without the nuanced complexities of it's competitors. It lends well to getting into it if you have limited comparison.
@BANJO it would get boring after a while. Multiplayer is where it’s best. I tried it with my wife and kids and we loved it. Tried online but it was laggy and people kept disconnecting. The mini games are great and I hope they add more mini games for online play which would make it better for single player use. I’d recommend it. I got it for 42 pounds on Amazon
@1UP_MARIO thanks, I have not got a Mario Party game in years but as this is a return to form somewhat I might give it a go. Base.com it's £39.85 currently, I'm tempted....
@Anti-Matter you've got to be the world's most persistent troll. You do realise people are allowed to like things other than was you personally dictate? And that your consistent talking down to anyone who enjoys different things is INCREDIBLY rude and immature?
@BANJO good price. I need to start using base
@Anti-Matter you know that I don't like cod either, but I do like fps games. But it is your opinion what you like or don't like.
@1UP_MARIO Generally they seem cheaper. I have many games preordered with them (Yoshi, Sonic Team Racing, Metroid 4, Bayonetta 3 and Smash Bro's) for switch. Smash I got for £42.85 before they raised the price. Grip is also cheap with them at £25.85.....
@NEStalgia Thanks for detailed response. I do agree, I don't think it does any one thing amazingly well. I like that BO4 borrowed from Siege, but I still prefer Rainbow Six Siege's tactical gameplay & hero selection for a standard multiplayer mode. I think Titanfall's movement felt better. It completely lacks singleplayer mode, which many competitors offer. As an overall package though, it does seem to do everything very competently, even if not best in class.
As for BR, it does seem to me to be the best BR available right now. I had a lot of fun playing PUBG, despite it being an absolute technical mess. So even being completely unoriginal, having a polished BR experience is a big win in my book. At this point in life, I am also more inclined for an "Easy listening" type game as you say, so I have been enjoying the other game modes as well, since you can jump in and out for just a few minutes at a time, but I will admit, there's nothing truly groundbreaking or innovative there.
EDIT: The other thing I'll mention, is that at least in BO4, it does feel like CoD went for faster paced, small scale battles. It doesn't feel stuck between quake/battlefield. Apart from the BR mode, it looks like there's only 12 players max. Gameplay if also much quicker than I remember, but again, that was 10 years ago. I still wouldn't say I'm a CoD fan, and I have a ton a critique regarding the franchise as a whole, but I also think it gets a lot of undeserved hate, simply because it's popular. Not accusing you of doing that, you made valid critiques with a lot of good examples, most of which I agree fully with.
@Anti-Matter what?
And here we go yet again... another comments section completely derailed by @Anti-Matter. Isn't anybody else getting sick of this? The same childish, irrelevant comments over and over?
@BANJO wow. Them prices. I cancelled my preorder for smash with Nintendo uk for 59.99 last week and preordered from game for 49.99 but you got it at a great price
@roadrunner343 True, it's certainly a competent product. But does simply being competent without excelling anywhere deserve top spot for a decade? I think that kind of exemplifies why people berate it so much. It's not especially good, it's just that it fails to be bad. Maybe that's a testament to the state of the games industry when that counts as the best thing you can get
That's interesting they've made the pace faster, though, in some ways that still seems weird, because it goes for realistic military game, yet, then goes on to play like an arcade shooter. It's kind of a rock and a hard place. The other companies have the realistic thing going on well, so they have to go the other way, and yet the theme they pick doesn't really lend to arcade action. They tried to switch it up with the space station thing a few years ago, and that went over like a lead balloon. In some ways that's what really rings hollow with it. The theme says it's based on realistic military action. The campaigns said it was outlandish hollywood military action. The campaigns are now gone. And the gameplay wants to be arcade, but without a distinct theme or world to make it stand out. Fortnite (ugh) stands out. Destiny stands out. Other games that don't stand out in theme or environment stand out in mechanics and control elements. COD has pretty standard, generic mechanics, with a standard generic theme. Activision really is lucky that the popularity of it has continued to be solid, because by all expectations I'm not sure the series really would have endured like this were it not popular for being popular. I think they may be shooting themselves in the foot by stripping campaigns though. They're trying to trim all costs where they can, but I think the campaigns at least kept something "unique" to each COD without it looking quite like an empty arena game.
@BANJO I’m amazed. Yoshi 39 pounds. Wolfenstein 2 38 pounds.
Thanks.
@NEStalgia I think it's clear I certainly don't believe it deserves top marks for the decade, since this is the first I've purchased at full price in that time =) Then again, top marks != top selling. Your "Least common denominator" comment certainly rings true with that. That said, I do think the game does more than failing to be bad. I think it's a solid, good game. Just not great or innovative. 7.5-8ish for me, if I were forced to score it.
As for realism, yeah, not a chance... it's super fast paced, arcadey shooter type. And of course, there are zombies, so I threw realism out quite some time ago. I can see why many people would have issues with it if they go into the series looking for that. Visually, I suppose is does evoke that feeling, but definitely not gameplay wise. I'd say Siege does a much better job of that, but even then, I struggle to call any FPS "realistic"...
@roadrunner343 In III zombies were just a sort of side mode, not a core part of the game. Is that not the case with IV? (or IIII gag )
But yeah the fast paced arcadey play still sounds out of place. In the past it was not realistic but realistic in the way movies look realistic, and that was the goal. Going "full arcade" is definitely weird.
Any of the Tom Clancy games are a good straddling line between realism and being fun as a video game. Obviously it's not going to be Sniper: Ghost Warrior, Sniper Elite, Operation Flashpoint, or ArmA where they're legit military simulators with wind and gravity falloff on ballistics etc, nor that level of tedium, but it's a good blend of "realistic tactics and considerations while being a video game and fun." I like the sniper games, I'm not too big on Flashpoint/ArmA, but I love the Tom Clancy games (and am amazed Ubi has not screwed them up with Clancy no longer around to approve them.)
@ButterCup
Black Ops 4 is a campaign-less microtransaction fest. This is coming from someone who really enjoyed BO2.
@1UP_MARIO Yes they are cheap. I have ordered 20+ games from them. No issues so far.. They only take money when the game is dispatched unlike others. I was lucky regarding Smash Bro's as it's more now, my £42.85 was cheap, but they will honour the price I preordered it at. It's not my type of game but I will get it as everyone else will and will play online and lose alot but still have fun....
@BANJO lol. I play casually but it’s more with my kids, nephews and nieces. It’s like a tradition really. You buy Nintendo. You buy smash
@NEStalgia I can't comment on III, but to me, it does feel like Zombies is a pretty substantial part of the game now, although I've mainly played standard multiplayer/blackout. Zombies even show up in the Blackout mode. I'm by no means an expert on the franchise though, so feel free to seek out other opinions/reviews.
As for Tom Clancy games, I agree - Ubi just keeps making Siege better and better. I wasn't impressed at first, and skipped it, but just picked it up a couple months ago for cheap during a Steam sale and really enjoy it. Strictly comparing standard multiplayer modes, Siege beats out BO4, no questions asked. At least in my book. Then again, the reason I like Siege so much more (Tactical, team based gameplay, with lengthier competitive rounds) is the same reason I decided to give BO4 a shot - for those occasions I just don't have time for a full competitive match, and I want a few minutes of mindless, easy listening gunplay.
@1UP_MARIO Great collection. My Smash Collection is weak by comparison. I have Smash Wii, Wii U and soon Switch. Even though I have a 3DS I don't have it for 3DS. I have about 15 sealed games for 3DS. I may never play them, which is sad. I am buying up boxed N64 games currently. Boxed Conkers Bad Fur Day is next but it's not cheap....
@BANJO I know what you mean. Good luck man.
There's no accounting for taste, I see.
Can't say I can blame them for choosing one title over the other, however: one of them is a AAA title with lots of love and high production values poured into it, and the other is Call Of Duty.
@roadrunner343 Wow, that's just flat out weird then! I guess COD found it's unique niche finally....zombies....like the 15 other zombies shooters including Fallout 76.............nevermind....
I mean that just makes no sense at all....but...whatever It was a side-mode in one game that was about human conflicts....
I suppose I don't do "mindless easy listening gunplay" types of gameplay. Splatoon's as close as I get but it's too competitive to be mindless Destiny 2 is the closest to "mindless gunplay" I do but of course those are 20-30 minute missions.
The UK is generally a graveyard for the majority of releases.
If you are not GTA, FIFA, CoD or Battlefront, they just don't care. For diversity and more chances in the market you need to swim to mainland Europe. While those games sell better, in general other games have more healthier sales.
So we've got a Top 10 with 2 Switch exclusives, a PS4 exclusive, a XB1 Console exclusive. A Top 10 with 1 FPS, 1 football game, 1 Wrestling game, 1 platformer, 1 Party game, 2 Arcade racers, 2 open-world games and whatever Tomb Raider is. A Top 10 where every game has a minimum score on Metacritic of 76.
And still people moan. It's like they copy and paste the same whining into every UK charts thread. Have a day off people.
LOL Weren't people saying last week that SMP was going to have some major drop off on the charts? 😂 It only dropping two spots and still remaining in the top 10 is still good.
Some folks just need to get off the negative Nintendo kick, the Switch was supposed to fall off a cliff this past spring, Kirby was supposed to bomb(it sold over million in a matter of months), Mario Tennis was supposed to the same etc.
@ReaderRagfish, I had the same reaction as you, IIII is not 4, IV is 4. That said, I looked up some information online and found a page that supports what both you and @NewAdvent are saying:
https://www.britannica.com/topic/Roman-numeral
The image of the clock shows IIII for 4 o'clock, while the table on the page shows IV as 4. In my opinion, the modern accepted norm for 4 is IV. Looking at the game package, it looks to me to be more of a visual design choice to use IIII instead of IV. In any case, IIII as 4 goes against my elementary education as well and feels wrong to me.
@Anti-Matter why are you melting down over other people's taste? Enjoy your games and, by all means, express yourself but also try harder than just repeating how horrible mature rated games are.
Otherwise you just look like a child having a tantrum.
@BigKing We don’t have anything to play? Right now I have Starlink, Xenoblade 2: Torna and Dark Souls to play (DS releases this Friday). And I’m not even mentioning my backlog.
I just don’t understand why the new call of duty game is doing so well, but then again I haven’t actually tried it for myself, so maybe I’m the one missing out. It just doesn’t seem like a lot of fun.
