Alongside the confirmation that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's single-player Classic mode will be returning, it was also revealed that the game will feature some brand new multiplayer mode styles.
The first of these is Squad Strike. In this mode, players can choose to participate in 5-on-5 or 3-on-3 skirmishes, with each player using either five or three consecutive fighters in one battle. When one of your characters is knocked out, you'll move onto the next, creating a tag-like system that will force you to master several different characters.
Another new mode that centres around the idea of being strong with multiple fighters, is Smashdown. In this mode, players choose their character as normal, entering a fight to see who comes out on top. When the match is over, players choose another fighter to play with for the next round, but any character that has already been used previously becomes unavailable. Players can keep going until the entire roster has been used up, and selection tactics could play a big part in winning this mode. Do you choose someone you're strong with, or pick someone that your opponent usually uses, in the hopes of throwing them off course?
On top of this, it was also announced that Tourney mode will be back in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Up to 32 players can participate in this mode, making it ideal for parties or events with a lot of people. Or just for an epic night in with a couple of friends if you prefer.

Smash down sounds very exciting, and the Squad Strike sounds fun, too! I don't know how I'm more excited for this, but I am. 4 more months!!!
These new modes, alongside Stage Morph, were some of the highlights of the Direct if you ask me. In super excited!
How does one "master each character"? I've never played Smash before. Does one have to memorize different controller combinations for each character?
This smash deserves the title Ultimate!
And i know the "secret" mode is storymode (successor of Subspace)
seeing all those bosses lurkibg around and fighting like a badass killer boss. Hell yeah storymode will return thats the blurred secret mode to be revealed later (closer to release) those cutscenes! Are truly beautifull.
And on top of that, Nintendo acheaved to bring true legendary characters in smash. Ryu, Cloud, Simon belmont, Megaman, Sonic, pacman, snake erc etc etc... All in one game!
Only if Captain N the game master could see this a true reunion lol
@Grant007 Not really. Not like MK or SF. The buttons do the same things, but characters have different attacks and reaches and such. It’s more about being aware of strengths and weaknes then memorizing move sets
@Grant007 All characters work the same when it comes to controller input. There's not a whole lot of combos to memorize afaik, you just have to memorize each ability.
Thanks for the replies. Suddenly I'm way more excited for this game realizing I wouldn't have to memorize tons of combos for each character!
Such a good direct. Every single thing i see about this game makes me want it more and more and more. Every single character, the abundance of stages, over 800 pieces of music, all these new modes and even a hidden one (cmon please be subspace).
I'm just blown away. December can't come fast enough!
So many improvements. Every dream mode I’ve ever imagined is coming true.
Can we have up to 8 players local like in the Wii U version?
Stage morph is friggin amazing. Easily my favourite part of the direct. Imagine that, playing Hyrule castle, only to shift to Final Destination. Sakurai does it again...
Now this is the sort of news that'll get me excited for Smash Ultimate! Really need some diversity to the Smash formula if you expect me to mess around with 100+ stages and characters, and I'm liking the sounds of these. I'm still most excited for Classic mode, if only because the singleplayer in Smash Wii U was so barebones, even if it doesn't look like it'll go full Subspace Emissary on us.
@JDORS Yes, it was confirmed to return at E3.
Tourney mode will still be online as well, right? I beefed up my internet speed to compensate, cause I will avenge myself for the abysmal internet speed I had for SSB4 and horrendous lag times that netted me terrible backside lashings.
Smashdown eh? This harkens back to the days when I was serious about Smash and used to be proficient with ALL characters. SSBU may just be the Smash to get me serious again about competing.
3v3 and 5v5 I see. Not to complain, I love it but, it would be nice if you had a tag option to bring in another character from your team at will for some really diverse strategy. Just map your other 2 characters (3v3) or other 4 characters (5v5) to a direction on the Dpad/Dbuttons and viola. I can dream at least...
This game just get better and more.... Well ultimately amazing! I wonder if they will add a Smash Run from 3ds mode on here as well?
@MeloMan oh that sounds like a great idea! A good use for the d pad... And switching characters can be like Pokémon Trainer switching.
I've played using Smashdown rules with friends, but having it officially in the game is great. Also I really dig the idea of a Final Smash Gauge.
Even though I already got the pre-order to this game as a birthday present a while back, I haven't been nearly as excited as I have been for previous Smash entries. But I've got to admit, this direct had me more interested than anything that was shown at E3.
@Ttimer5 Yes! I loved Smash Run, and the Switch is a great system for it. Here's hoping!
I really hope to see Squad Strike tourneys become a thing.
By the off-chance character metas are figured out early on and people start gravitating towards the potentially OP characters, this mode seems like it'd be a good way to circumvent the issue.
Best news from the Direct after the new characters
@JDORS yes the switch version also has 8 players but even better you can play all the stages with 8 players now
Can't wait for this game to release. If only so that we can start hearing about other games again. Hopefully some from Nintendo too.
@The-Chosen-one Only the other day people were crying, saying "What more can they tell us? We know pretty much everything!" The answer is loads. This game is ridiculously feature-laden, yet they still haven't told us everything...
I doubt my brother will like Smashdown. He only plays Captain Falcon. Sounds fun to me though.
I know this is a little off topic but I wonder why they didnt say anything about the online subscription service since it releases next month. Maybe that means we are getting another direct before the end of the month.
So Smash Bros Ultimate has...
> All previous Smash Bros characters (and echo fighters)
> Ridley, Inkling, Simon Belmont, and King K Rool
> 103 unique stages
> 900 music tracks
> A ton of new assist trophies, Pokemon, and items
> A new Smashdown mode
> A Stage Morph option
> A Final Smash meter option
> A new mode that is supposedly called the "Spirits" mode (which could be the new single-player mode??)
I think talks of this game being an enhanced Wii U port can stop once and for all.
@westman98 it was already discussed that this was not a port. This game was built from the ground up.
New Spirits mode, which probably ties in to Luigi getting killed and you saw his spirit in that cutscene.
Not sure if we were supposed to know about that yet but they managed to read the blurred text and confirm with the name in the Japanese version
@ekwcll
Well some people don't seem to "trust" the official confirmations...
@westman98 Agreed.
squad strike sounds lit. like marvel vs capcom style
So is Squad Strike one long match until the team is eliminated...or is it just Team Battle Mode; a staple of Fighting Game since, at least, Virtua Fighter 2 on the Sega Saturn?
Man, today’s Direct proved to be quite pleasing, just when I thought they had revealed everything. Well played.
I don't really like fighting games (at least not since International Karate on the C64), and I've never played a Smash ... but for some reason I'm starting to get quite excited about this one.
