Bethesda has announced that DOOM Eternal is coming to the Nintendo Switch, with Panic Button - the studio that ported DOOM and Wolfenstein II - handling conversion duties.
The news came at this year's QuakeCon, with the publisher confirming a Nintendo version alongside the PS4, Xbox One and PC editions of the game.
There's no release date as yet, but Bethesda did confirm that players will be able to take control of demons and enter another player's campaign - a bit like Dark Souls, then. There will also be new weapons, such as a massive flamethrower and deadly blade. You'll also get a new dash skill to help navigate the underworld.
No footage of the Switch version has been shown as yet, but some gameplay snippets (presumably PC) have been shown:

This is old news, where have you been NL? 😜
So psyched!!!!
YES! Bless you Panic Button, bless you!
Well, now that it's officially coming to Switch, this is #2 on my "games I'm looking forward to" list, after Metroid Prime 4. Can't wait!
Fantastic news! I'll probably get it on both PS4 and Switch!
I really hope it is day-and-date with the other versions. I will buy it day one on Switch, and probably on PC too. I really love Bethesda games and I am really happy with the support they have shown the Switch.
I'm getting this without hesitation. Can't wait!
This is amazing! the first time a AAA will launch on switch alongside other platforms!
@AlternateButtons I agree. I also believe that the recent additions to UE4 will allow the game to run better on Switch than the previous game. Take care.
Woohoo! Can't wait. DOOM was one of the funnest games I've played in years.
This is a big get for the system! Haven't gotten Doom yet but I think it's safe to say that Bethesda's releases last year sold well and hopefully Nintendo can keep that relationship alive.
Time for some demon slaughter!
Oh HELL yes!!!
DOOM is an incredible game and it's incredible on Switch, I love it. I still have to get Wolf2 for Switch when I'm ready for my next game, DOOM Eternal will be, wait for it, day one. Cannot WAIT.
But Bethesda is abandoning the Switch, armirite??
@Agent721 I see what you did there, and I salute you.
@MartyFlanMJFan
Cheers!
But but but... Switch has no third party support!!!!!
YES !! i am currently playing through the 2016 game on Switch and loving it, this is awesome news for me !!!
@westman98 Yep, this is ultimate proof that the Switch is well and truly done for, what with all these old ports of Wii U and other last gen console games, needless bucket loads of indies, and their own, worthless IP's.
It's pretty obvious that this is just a joke and that the Switch isn't going to get any current gen third party game support at all anymore... /s
Food for the trolls, I say...
@IPrino Doom Eternal is running on a proprietary engine, so upgrades to UE4 won't directly impact it, but it does prove that there's more performance to be had on the Switch.
Doom, Wolfenstein 2, and now Doom Eternal on switch. This is great news, Day 1 purchase. Thank you Bethesda and Panic button.
Great news. The 2016 game is brilliant on all formats. More of the same high standard please.
Great news!!! Loved the first game for ps4 and also the Wolfenstein 2 port for Switch was great! Really hope this launches alongside the other consoles.
Wooooohoooooo. I’m in heaven
I'll be getting this on another platform. I didn't enjoy the switch version of Doom so much after playing the game on PC. Panic Button did a great job, no question there. But for me the Switch is not the right fit for the recent AAA titles. I'll give it another shot when they revise the hardware to make it more powerful.
Buying this day 1.
@westman98 I know you are kidding but to Todd Howard or Bethesda actually say that?
Well, Nintendo is at least, and correctly, once again... DOOMED!
@Brutchie-bear
Of course not.
But people assumed they did.
I really don’t care at all for any of Bethesda’s Switch offerings, but I’m happy they’re coming anyways. Kudos for them supporting the system continually!
Have they ever mentioned how well the 1st game sold on Switch? In the US, I’ve noticed it’s rarely been on sale, which lends me to believe it has and continues to sell well.
@Lumine well, worst case, even there isn't the option, just don't connect to the internet.
@westman98 I really like Bethesda games but I wished they focused more on releasing their last gen games. I really like playing Skyrim on Switch - which unlike Doom runs very well. Fallout 3 would be awesome!
@DTfeartheBEARD Let's not forget Skyrim my good man. The awesomeness just keeps stacking up!
Panic Button did such an amazing job on Doom and Wolfenstein II! This is a day one for me!
Bethesda, Ubisoft, and Square Enix are making other major third party publishers looking straight up lazy, lol. I look forward to preordering Doom Eternal the moment preorders open.
Just make it fit on a cartridge without a mandatory download and I will buy it on Switch, otherwise I will support the other consoles
With DOOM being one of my favourite games this gen I cannot wait for this, I bought the original for both PS4 and Switch and will likely get this for PC and probably Switch too
gooood, gooooood....
I still gotta get the other bethesda games but the more the better. This is a good problem to have.
Hell (no pun intended) yea!
Nice! Bethesda continues to provide surprisingly robust support for the Switch.
Let's hope they're rewarded with good sales.
@WaitroseDad64
I'm surprised Fallout 3 Anniversary isn't happening on any platform. Would be a great core Fallout remaster to complement Fallout 76, which is an online-focused spin-off.
Hell yeah! I don't know why my nipples are hard.
I hate to be petty and that guy....I'm shocked the usual gum flappers with their "Nintendo is doomed" comments haven't come in to move the bar further on why the Switch is a failure.
Wow, so it appears the Switch version will launch same day as the other versions? That's a big deal if so.
Very cool!!! Now the switch finally going to get the game at the same time.
Regardless if your version of choice or not - this is Great news!
@westman98 Well, they did give away 3 with 4 on XBONE physical copies, which probably has some X Enhancements if not will do.
Well I'll be! Guess I'm going to be getting the first one, then. (I didn't like the idea of starting the saga and not being able to finish) Keep it coming, Bethesda!
@UmbreonsPapa I'm sure they're just resting. It's been a busy week for them!
@Medic_alert Oh, okay. The "will launch on..." wording in the Tweet made me think it would be a simultaneous Day One release. Still a good get for the Switch either way.
That's good. That's damn good.
@WaitroseDad64 I'm confused... Isn't Doom and Wolfenstein more "last gen" then Fallout 3?!
@mazzel I think the user meant in terms of franchise entries(?), consider Fallout 3 is 10 years old.
I might be the only one here who doesn’t like overly violent first person shooters (except Anti-Matter). Maybe I’m just too young.
@ballistic90 didn't realize that, thanks for the info. Take c as re
@HobbitGamer OK, following that logic, Fallout is for sure more "last gen" then either Wolfenstein or Doom, as they are the mothers of FPS
I wish PS4 would do cross play and save cos I'd definitely double dip if that was the case, as it stands I'll be getting the switch version, awesome news
I guess I'd better try harder to finish Doom. I love it, but I'm terrible at shooters.
Nice had bin expecting it,but nice to see it confirmed
...I'm sorry, what were the doubters saying about third-parties on the Switch again?
I buying this for sure. Not on my X, but for the Switch, just like I did with the first game.
I don't do FPS personally but this is fantastic news!
Can't remember another time a game of this scale released on Switch simultaneously with the other platforms, so I assume there's more riding on this than usual.
I really was expecting Wolf II to be the last Id game on Switch. Sometimes it's nice to be wrong.
@Spoony_Tech Because god forbid the guys at Nintendo Life take their time to write a story, edit it, make sure their photos and video don't look crappy, and make sure they are as accurate as possible, all while presenting it in a way that caters directly to Nintendo fans. Simply inexcusable.
This is great news!
I’ll go for the Ps4 version. This game meant to be played loud and clear.
The biggest question is will it release the same date as other consoles.
@G-Boy Nah, you're not. The only FPS I could ever get into is the original Halo trilogy.
Fantastic. Bethesda have really put effort in to give us proper triple-A games on the Switch. I hope they'll give us a version of The Elder Scrolls VI.
@Spoony_Tech Sorry didn't notice your smiley emoji. guess i'm the ass here.
game looks good. PC here but it's nice they're giving switch only people SOMETHING; even if that something is a shadowy imitation.
YAAAAAASSSS LETS GOOOOOO! Praying it has a red cartridge.
@Prof_Yoshtonics Agreed, I cannot forget Skyrim (100 hours) lol. I hope Bethesda brings Fallout and The Evil Within next.
@Azzdama Same here. Or cross save from Switch/PC.
Would prefer Rage 2 personally but this is great news nonetheless. Glad it's coming day and date with other platforms!
Yes!! Great news! So glad Bethesda is supporting the hardware!
I remember so many people here saying this wouldn't come to Switch.
This is excellent news, gotta love Bethesda 's support.
@mazz I had 3 YouTube videos on the subject before this article hit. 2 of them where longer then 6 minutes. Those take time as well.
You said what you felt and you're fine. In a way I was joking and in another I wasn't so you're good.
Awesome! Please be day and date! The Switch version is the one I really want.
Awesome news!!!! A truly unexpected but welcome surprise! Much thanks to Bethesda and Panic Button for bringing it to Switch. Now just to wait for preorders to open...
Heck yea! Still yet to get DOOM (was top of my wishlist for ages but too many great games!) But still looking forward to this and great 3rd party support.
Woo!!
Rip and Tear!!!
Day one purchase for me! The Doom reboot was amazing and the gyro controls on the Switch absolutely make it the version I enjoy the most.
Nice!!!
Wow this sound like fun can't wait.
I have to buy it to ensure, on a small scale, that the game sells well so Bethesda won't abandon Nintendo like how other publishers did during the Wii U era.
The first one surprised me at how much I enjoyed on the Switch. So too will I buy this one.
My brother played my physical copy of Doom and he said it reminded him of Metroid Prime. I also got that feeling, did anyone else?
Really liked the previous one. Fast paced gameplay and the game didn't take you the controller away to show you boring scripts unlike a lot of modern AAA. These games fit very well on a handheld system.
I would sell my soul to Panic Button for a port of Dark Souls III (I know, the first one isn't even out on Switch yet)! It's one of my favorite games, this generation (along with Bloodborne, which wouldn't be released on anything but a Sony platform), and it seems that Switch is powerful enough to run it.
@Agent721 You might even say...they're doomed eternally.*
*I didn't come up with this, even though it seems obvious now. I stole it from another comment thread on another site.
Like everyone else - day one. Hopefully same day as PS4 and Xbox too.
Big day for future of switch if it is release parity.
If they can do it on this others are running out of excuses.
Panic button should run classes to teach the less competent companies how to do it properly
HELL YEAH.
@Giygas_95 I’m getting it on my PS4 and Switch as well.
Panic Button should bring the Metroid Prime trilogy to Switch as well.
You’re on the run from the stun of the [massive] flame thrower...!
So if the next Wolfenstein is announced for Switch, will the tagline be 'to heil and back?'
@MasterJay no offense but off the top of my head I remember that a just last year we got FIFA 18 and NBA 2K18 day and date with the other platforms. Unless for some weird reason sports games don't count as AAA?
will pick up doom 2016 in a few days for pc
Nice! Preferred Doom over Wolfenstein if im being completely honest, so this is wonderful news.
@gortsi Nope not in my book. To me, AAA games are realistic games that are mostly shooters, action, and adventure. But that's just what I've been told, truly I think everyone should consider any super high quality release AAA, like botw, odyssey and ssb ultimate, but I personally wouldn't consider sports games that even then, not saying that they're bad, but I wouldn't consider a yearly reskin with a few updates AAA, the industry's best games
Thank you nintendo, panic button, and Bethesda! This is awesome news!
And of course Nintendolife guys
God love Panic Button and Bethesda! This is awesome, loved Doom on Switch, and working through Wolfenstein now, which is also really good! Now if we could just get them to bring over a Fallout Anthology....
@MasterJay well I see what you mean but AAA usually refers to production values, not genres. In this respect sports games usually cost a lot more to make than most games, they are very faithful simulations of their respective sports nowadays, and the presentation is always top notch. But each to their own
If Bethesda is going to start supporting the Switch properly, then I guess I'll have to respond in kind. Between this and the success of Octopath, it should be enough to get this gravy train rolling for 2019 and beyond.
@Orwellianson Also, yes. I never owned these myself when they were out, as I was a broke teen, but I remember liking what I did play at friends' houses. I'd love to play the series in full, even Other M, before I dive into 4. Similar to how I'll pick up Bayo 1 and 2 before the 2019 game.
But but but I've got nothing to pla....oh hang on a sec?
Please, for the love of God, put it on a 32GB cartridge this time! (Or at the very least, issue a limited edition that does)
It's hard for me to get excited when they screwed over the Switch edition of Wolfenstein and even the last DOOM. I just barely gave DOOM a pass due to the single player campaign itself being on the cartridge, but I would double dip if there was ever a reissue with the entirety of the game on cartridge. Wolfenstein is a pass (as much as it pains me) unless I can pick it up for next to nothing as I can't, in good conscience, support this awful practice. I would happily pay above standard retail price otherwise, if that is what it takes.
@G-Boy You’re not alone! I’m not into this kind of stuff either, or most violent, gory, or bloody things. I’m glad it’s being ported to Switch because Nintendo needs all the 3rd party support it can get, but I’m 100% not getting this title.
@gortsi Sports games don't cost much more than a big shooter. Especially since, like most big shooters, they reuse assets often and will use mostly identical assets and push an engine for as long as possible. Not that there's necessarily anything wrong with this, it's just with noting.
The reason the big sports games cost so much to make is exclusive licensing. Companies like EA and 2k pay the appropriate sports organisations for the rights to use things like team names, team logos, player names, and player likenesses. Which, considering the size and popularity of these things, brings an immense cost. They're paying even more so that other companies can't officially use these things. Fifa especially is massive because of its worldwide appeal.
So yes, games like these might technically cost more, but it's not because of their development budget.
So Panic button are now somehow Gods of gaming? How the heck are they pumping out AAA title after AAA title while all the major developers can't even get their games to work (looking at you WWE 2k and Resident Evil 7 Cloud Edition)?
Day one for me, my Switch Overlords. You've earned my trust and cash lol
@gortsi Never heard of it being about cost before, but according to Google I guess you're right, sorry bout dat
@Regpuppy of course, licencing is included in the overall cost, which is also the case with some shooters. COD and other shooters also pay for licencing to gun manufacturers and so on. Can't imagine the Champions League licence came cheaply to EA. Exclusive licencing needs to die though, that's one thing the NBA always got right while FIFA and UEFA continue their crappy practices.
@MasterJay no worries
@MagnaRoader Effort, skill, and a little clever thinking. A lot of licensed ips, like wwe, are use to relying on the pull of their ip. So they sometimes halfass their ports or shunt it off to the lowest bidder just to get it out.
@Regpuppy kinda sad but true. Which is why I'll never support jackasses like 2K. Also why can't Capcom just hand Resident Evil 7 over to Panic Button for porting?
Awesome to hear. I'm really excited for this next entry and it's good to hear it's coming to Switch. I'll probably pick it up on PC instead but who knows, things can change.
@Regpuppy yesssss
Awesome!!!!!
@gortsi I agree that exclusive licenses need to die. But it comes down to ip management. It's easier to let a big established company, like EA, pay you to manage it than it is to invest in a licensing company, or set up their own publisher, to selectively license/hire people to produce games for them. The only other option is leaving it TOO open and risk oversaturation and/or damage to the ip.
I'm sure a lot of our older gamers here remember how all of those horrid games based on cartoons and movies, made us think twice about other games based on them. If we go back to the Atari days, this was the biggest contributor to the crash of the industry, until Nintendo resurrected it with the NES.
Edit: Fixed my tired grammar a bit.
I did not know about this. I'm beyond happy knowing it's Panic Button as they seem to squeeze more out of each released attempt on their converting of those idtech6 engine games. Being doomed again, please.
Very glad to see. Thank you Bethesda. Thank you Panic Button.
I know 2018 has seemed slow for the Switch, but between what Panic Button, NIS, Bethesda, Square, and even Capcom are doing things are a lot better than they have been.
But but fallout shelter... no games!
I think I'm ready for this.
I sat through the entire presentation, my jaw on the floor, and just kept thinking "This is NEVER coming to the Switch!" over and over again in my head. It looks a lot more advanced than both Doom 2016 and Wolfenstein 2.
When I saw the announcement a few minutes later my eyes almost popped out of their sockets. This is just crazy!
I'll probably pick it up on both Switch and on the Xbox One as well.
Nintendo is DooMed Eternally 😂
Thank you Panic Button and Bethesda. Bethesda went from having no games on Nintendo consoles to being the biggest supporters overnight, that includes Indies and third-party. Hell, I'm almost inclined to say they support the Switch more than Nintendo themselves, but not quite there. Hopefully Fallout 3 or New Vegas is next.
@Orwellianson Gotta have the 60fps version and the handheld version, am I right?
Alongside!? There's a surprise!
DOOM is fantastic on the Switch, and I say that as someone who owns the PC version, so I'm very much interested in the sequel. I just hope it's 100% cart with no download.
Still waiting for the announcement of Fallout 3 for the Switch, but I suppose I shouldn't be greedy. Haha
Wow, this is some great news. I was already looking forward for Doom Eternal, but now that it's going to be released on the switch too is even better!
Did not see this coming.
Surprised, but happy to hear it. Looking fwd to picking this up for the switch.
I wish they'd port over a Fallout game. Any one of them I'm not fussy.
I'll be damned (and if I play it, I really will be )
@Zuljaras the other consoles require mandatory downloads too so keep dreaming dude
@Moonlessky how do you know that?
Is it not only the Xbox One X that requires downloads in order to play?
As far as I read the disc based games do not need dls in order to run after installation.
Ok, so to correct our lists from June, Microsoft win e3. Bethesda now win the second place slot.
This is freaking awesome. Doom eternal just went from "i don't care" to "when do pre order open?"
Yes this time the Switch is eternally Doom and I'm excited.
I have a switch and Xbox one x. But I would get it for the switch.
@Zuljaras because I own a ps4 and an xb1 since launch and every major game requires a mandatory installation that takes up hard drive space and these are blurays that have 25gb in storage and games still aren't playable straight from the disc, so what you're asking from the switch tiny cards is unreasonable.
@Moonlessky So I guess everyone in the PS4 forums are lying?
Could you tell me of a games that requires a mandatory update in order to play AFTER you have installed it from the disc?
@Zuljaras any game that has online multiplayer, if you dont have the latest version of the game then you cant play online.
@Moonlessky Ahh ok. I was asking about the single player aspect of the game.
As far as I know lets say Doom or any other game that has both single player AND multiplayer on PS4/XboxOne have fully playable single player right off the disc without ANY downloads required. If I want to play any of the multiplayer/online aspects I have to update it and download additional stuff.
Could you confirm that is the case?
BTW All I want from Doom Eternal for the switch is that to be like the first Doom - Single Player playable off the cart and download option if I want to play multiplayer.
@Zuljaras I'm not moonless KY but that's the case, unless it's single-player online only for no reason like For Honor or Need for Speed (2016).
Yes great news I was waiting to hear this, waiting and hoping.
@Zuljaras honestly, since both the ps4 and xb1 have plenty of storage developers arent shy about gobbling it all up! So they arent as space conscious when it comes to those console. Hopefully they'll do something similiar for this ver on the switch were the multiplayer is an optional download!
@Zuljaras oh and also since usually we have the xb1 connected to the internet all the time the console downloads the updates automatically.
@starfox007 @Moonlessky
Phew! Every time I see something about mandatory downloads for single player only I get nervous
I just want to have the option to play the physical games I buy without any internet involved (unless the game is online like The Elder Scrolls Online, Overwatch etc.).
I know it is lame in todays gaming but I want to OWN the games I buy not rent them or get the incomplete package.
PS: I do not know that "KY" stands for.
@Zuljaras I meant to refer to the other user Moonlessky but autocorrect is terrible. Sorry.
@Giygas_95 totes muhgoats.
A platform that you can play both Metroid Prime and DOOM on. Yup it's official: Nintendo Switch is the single most awesome console ever made:D
@MasterJay NBA 2k18 was the first atcually
If the port is good, this is the version I'll go for.
@Zuljaras
You will have an iccomplete package of most games playing them from disc only unfortunately. They will be playable but single player games often receive updates too. Take Arkham Knight for example, the combat was improved in version 1.14. GTA V is on version 1.44 and it isn’t just the Online that’s been tweaked. God of War is already on 1.13. Even Nintendo do it, Odyssey and BOTW got Day 1 patches. Doom on Switch is technically playable but would miss out on performance updates and Motion Controls etc.etc.
@electrolite77 Yes I know but they are playable. That is what matters for me. I know that patches bring fixes and features as well as DLCs. That is not the issue.
It is a matter of view that such practices as on the Switch small cartridges should be shamed and not supported. That is all
If they release Wolfenstein 2 Complete edition on the Switch I would buy it. But that pathetic attempt from Bethesda will not go by.
I want as you said it "technically playable" games. I will surely update them but I want my piece of plastic to be playable without updates
@mazz I think @Spoony_Tech thought this was the first Doom?
Edit: Oh, right. The pre-order thing.
Nice! Any idea when this is released?
@Moonlessky One thing to remember is that the reason a lot of AAA games are so large on the Xbone and PS4 is the 4k textures. That eats up a LOT of space compared to plain old 1080p, which is why these games lose a lot of gigs in their Switch ports.
Doomguy for Smash!
I'm ecstatic that this will be on Switch! I cannot wait!
Panic butt on= is a Boss and beast at porting AAA ports switch games Haaaa!! So far they have not let us down in bringing us Good graphics and steady framerstes all we need now is a GTA 5 port and Fallout New Vegas, and Borderlands prequal port and I'll be a Happy camper and buy them all three! I gotta write a Dear letter to them maybe they ll hear me out, or take notice from a Hardcore, gaming fan geek Lol.Now off too playing Fortnite!! And Owning people on it.
@NEStalgia I already had Bethesda on second place all along, so nothing to correct for me...
SO F-ING BUYING THIS. Doom was fantastic, getting Wolfy 2 later, and will support DE on Switch.
So happy
@IPrino
It doesn't use UE4... It uses IDTech 7...
They're really going all out with this game at Bethesda.
Looking forward to just how crazy they go with the world building and artwork.
Great news!
plus its using a new gaming engine which is compatible with the switch as well.
HELL YEAH.
Nintendo is Doom
@IPrino
UE4? You couldn’t be more wrong! All Doom games run on idtech which is a proprietary engine of id software. These people (including legendary John Carmack in the past) made their own engines since the dawn of PC gaming.
Thinking it’s running on Unreal Engine is... sacrilege.
Already said I made a mistake. But thanks anyway
I have yet to play the first one.
