Nintendo has had a mixed bag of E3 moments. High and low points are to be expected, and as we've already looked at some of the more embarrassing instances, we thought in the run up to E3 2018 it was time to take a more positive look at things, to bring balance to the universe in an arguably more constructive way than Thanos.
So make sure you check out the video above to see our five top picks. If you're not in 100% agreement with our list for some mad reason that science cannot explain, let us know your picks in the comments below.

I don’t know... Amiibo Festival will always be a big one for me...
Haven’t watched video yet but I’d guess it’s the Nintendo revolution at number 1 well that was my number 1 anyway
Nothing beats a first look at a new Mario Kart for me, followed by a new Pikmin!
I have never been more divided between missing something whilst loving the new approach at the same time.
The pre-filmed Direct way of showing new games off at E3 is probably much smarter and gets people a lot more excited at the end of the day (as well as removes chances of awkwardness) but it just doesn't feel like the same magic as seeing Nintendo representatives on stage with fans screaming their heads off over a reveal.
With that said, I don't think Directs will ever be the same either with Iwata gone.
@AlexOlney good video, just one correction: it'd have been impossible for the Vita to be announced in 2004, you obviously meant the PSP
One of my favorite moments was when Miyamoto showed off an early build of Star Fox Zero and we all naively thought it had a chance at being good.
Best Nintendo event, best any gaming event, is Nintendo Spaceworld where they showed off the GameCube stuff - Zelda and Star Wars mainly. Every thing has been downhill since then.
Sony's E3 with FF7R and Shenmue would be tops if those games weren't vaporware. 🤑
Let's hope this year is more 2002/2004/2014 than 2003/2012 or (shudder) 2008
Twilight Princess reveal for me. It was an amazing build up trailer and the crowd going crazy after the LoZ logo, and when it finished, was just so amazing to see.
Iwata was amazing and yes he will be always in our hearts and Nintendo's.
That being said i would have loved the whole video to be the Metroid Prime 4 teaser because i cannot wait for it!
My Favorite would have to be the reveal of the Nintendo Wii, i loved it and i played with console to no end and i still do it is one of my most treasured consoles and i had some great times with friends.
And i agree with Varkster, the Directs won't be the same however we will continue to remember them as proud gamers and they wil be in our memories forever.
This. Always this.
My most memorable moment was in 2014 when Aonuma snapped his finger and a Zelda Wii U image popped up behind him. The. The slow realization that this wasn’t just concept art, the grass and clouds were moving! This is actual in game footage! My mind was blown.
I didn't even watch the E3 in 2004, but I think still understand these moments pretty well. Twilight Princess still is my favourite Zelda game (I actually kind of hate Breath of the Wild, I guess I'm the only one) and I always love to watch the entire Wii intro (in the Wii version they have a cut-scene after the first part of the intro that has been removed in the HD version). I also really like the music and feeling they managed to capture in Twilight Princess. For me, Twilight Princess is my favourite game of all time. I liked Wind Waker too, more that I thought I would, but that game just didn't have the music and the amazing color palette they featured in Twilight Princess. I love the gloomy kind of dark colours, it really adds to the story. And for me, the story is alway a very big thing in games, I have no imagination, so I love when I don't have to try to pretend at all. I want the game to give me the actual experience, not just let me imagine my own thing, because that never works for me.
And I miss Iwata, he always had such and amazing way to see things and he knew how to share those views with others, he was truly amazing.
Thanos, you say?
checks Infinity War reference off of Game Informer's E3 Bingo
The biggest E3 moments for me had to be the Muppets and the initial reveal for BotW back in 2014. Unfortunately I didn't start fully watching E3 until about 2012 or so.
Also, having played Wind Waker a few months ago and just now starting to wrap up Twilight Princess, I find them quite comparable.
At the time, I think 2013's was the one I was most hyped over. Knowing Super Mario 3D World and Smash 4 were on the way was amazing
The Twilight Princess announcement gives me goosebumps every time! And I didn’t even particularly like that game.
@gortsi beat me to it
@electrolite77 Don't worry, it'll be 2015
I kind of miss the goofiness of the Wii U era E3 Directs. Sketches with Reggie ,Iwata and Shigs always put a smile on my face ,as cheesy as they were. The Muppet sketch was really great. Now it's all a bit too serious.
Twilight Princess reveal. It was one of the first E3s I followed live, they showed exactly what everyone wanted and the audience cheers were just incredible. It’s not one of my favourite Zelda games, not even in the top 5, but that reveal is a masterclass.
Lately Nintendo have been getting way better at giving people what they want (with a twist) but there’s no beating the magic of a live stage presentation. That being said, there’s also no lows like talking about sales data for 30 minutes.
2010 was the best show for me. Nintendo came out swinging with Skyward Sword and just carried on from there. Metroid, Kirby, Resident Evil, Star Fox, Smash Bros, Mario, the games just kept on coming. They were firing them out everywhere, then boom here's Goldeneye, boooom Donkey Kong Country Returns, boooom Kid Icarus Uprising. Oh and then finish off with 3DS demo units brought out right there and then attached to models. All told I think there was over 50 games shown for Wii and 3DS.
Nintendo didn't just 'win' e3 that year, they completely dominated it
Lmao the native american quip made me chuckle, nice try XD
That moment with Miyamoto always makes me smile!
@OorWullie @frogopus @CrimSkies97
I think the reason for things like the muppet sketch and the Robot Chicken stuff in 2014 was to hyde that they didn't have much to show, unlike the Switch era. I mean, the muppet sketch was nice, but it was a precursor to a show announcing Animal Crossing Amiibo Party, Mario Tennis Wii U, Tri Force Heroes and Federation Force. No wonder nostalgia for the muppet isn't universally felt.
I started watching/following E3 with 2008... probably the worst for Nintendo. Skipped 2009 but came back for 2010 when the 3DS was set to be unveiled. 2010 was good and 2011 I remember being awesome. 2012 was pretty meh. 2013 and 2014 were both solid, then 2015 was just a huge slap in the face. 2016 was the only year I was able to watch Nintendo's event live and they didn't have one. Very sad. It was alright because 2017 ended up being great, even if a bit short. Finger crossed this year is even better!
Alex, a tip, either explain what the clip is gonna be then show it in full, or the other way around, but let us see the full clip. This video is a complete failure.
@rjejr Yeah that was a good show.
I wish we still had Nintendo Spaceworld!
@frogopus Muppet Nintendo was the best!
RIP Iwata...
Nothing quite as embarrassing as seeing Wii Music live, in my opinion.
All the 1990's/very early 2000's E3's and all the Space Worlds. Definitely the most exciting time frame for reveals, from my viewpoint. Everything feels more by the book at this point, with few real game changers over the past decade. It's been a loooooooooong time since I've genuinely felt SUPER hyped about anything in console gaming. The industry is in dire need of a 1998-level renaissance. 2017 was on the right track, but not quite there yet.
@Phle I'm a huge fan of Twilight Princess too and well often watch the second intro in the Wii version. I also like all the special moves you learn along the way which made combat more exciting than other Zelda games.
Also, on the note regarding Iwata, he did things like taking a 50% paycut instead of laying off their workers during the 2011 slump. Never forget that. Never forget that in this age of corporate executives raping and pillaging everything they can, and screwing over workers for the highest possible profits and white collar bandit getaways.
You forgot Miyamoto's "welcome to our new baby" (Gamecube reveal).
2010 was one of my personal favorites and I've been watching Nintendo since CES
@datamonkey Thanks for reminding me I never did post the vid.
Nintneod Spaceworld 2000 Gamecube games w/ fan reaction
Less fanbois, better quality.
@rjejr Wow that brought back some memories!
I remember watching it live online on a 56k modem which was a lot harder to do back then.
I was so hyped after that, especially when Link came onto the screen! Makes me feel old af now though!
@datamonkey "when Link came onto the screen"
And then Ntinedo announced WW w/ it's cell shaded graphics and tore the heart out of the collective Zelda fanbase.
I think everybody has forgotten about that now, WW looks good after AC:aF.
@rjejr Hah yeah it was the Spaceworld video that got everyone's hopes up for ultra-realistic Zelda and then they did a Nintendo on us with WW!
I was a bit disappointed in the art style initially but also loved WW and thought it got unfair flack really. Anyway I think they learnt a lesson from that one and they did sort of cave in to fan demand with Twilight Princess I suppose!
@datamonkey "I think they learnt a lesson from that one"
If Nintnedo had learned a lesson MP:FF and AC:aF would have never happened. Things have been better the past year though, that's for sure. Another 20 hours and we'll have a better idea. If they port AC:aF to Switch people will not be happy.
