Octopath Traveler launches next month and Square Enix - along with Nintendo - is slowly but surely ramping up the hype to make sure anyone who considers themselves to be a fan of RPGs knows it's coming.
Nintendo has just released a new commercial which focuses on the eight different characters that are playable in the game. The 30-second clip feels like a tight edit of the E3 trailer that was released a short time ago, and can be viewed below.
From what we've seen of Octopath Traveler, it could be one of 2018's most critically-acclaimed hits. Let us know if you're as excited as we are by posting a comment below.

Yes, Octomania is totally a related game.
Let's get all the information we can before launch so nothing in the game is a surprise.
Not going to watch this, just going to wait for the game. (Truly cannot wait for this game though, had my pre-order in as soon as the Travelling Compendium edition was available on Amazon back in April)
Is it just me or are they giving away way too much information about the game.
Soon you won't need to play it, just watch the video releases.
I need it now!!!! The prologue demo was so amazing, I didn't want it to end. I have the collectors edition pre-order, just two more weeks....
I love the fact that they designed some beautiful character THEN made 16 bits version with a few pixels.
I am sooooooo looking forward to this game, but I won't let anything spoil it.
Alfyn-nators make some noise!
Absolutely cannot wait for this game, its going to take over my life.
So excited for this game!
The character artwork is so nice though, I wish the game looked like that The final game is still great though!
I really hope the main casts interacts with one another through each of their chapters
How is the story going to work in this game? Will it be like you play all characters chapter 1s, then 2s etc and then all your goals align and there's one big final battle?
This game honestly looks so so good though I cannot wait
I played the demo. Wasn't a fan. Not sure why but it irked me. Maybe I'm getting too old for Rpgs. ☹️
@JRJalapeno I guess with time tastes can change. I personally liked it, I had missed a good 2D styled rpg although I also enjoyed Disgea5
I love the look of the game, but I'm a bit concerned by the random encounters
@Rhaoulos I played the prologue demo and loved it myself that I actually look forward to it even more! It's weird because with Lost Sphear, the demo is what convinced me to NOT get the game.... but with Octopath's demo and how it brilliantly handled the intro segment to both set tones and gameplay early on.... Octopath's demo actually cinched my decision to buy the game.
This said, while I've already played the intros of 6 of the 8 characters, I've decided to stop there to leave the last remaining two as a surprise for myself, so I hear you on wishing to keep things a surprise for yourself as well.
Not going to watch al the pre released material, same for the demo that was released just recently. Dont wanne spoil it, gonne buy it anyway
I'm for sure the minority here, but although I tried so hard to like this game (played both demos), I just couldn't. Something about it just made me not like it at all. And I'm over 30 and grew up on games like FF6 and Chrono Trigger (two of my favorite games ever). I think the art style is SUPER ugly although I appreciate the different look they are trying to go for. Anyway...exciting for those waiting for it!
I really like the look of this game and the voice acting (or the few bits heard in the trailer) sound superb.
Now all I need is a Switch...
@Aaron09 That's one of my primary concerns after playing the new demo. So far in chapter 1 at the very least there's not any meaningful interaction between the characters. I'm hoping that changes once everyone is recruited.
I enjoy the demo so much that I now got this pre-order while playing Ys VIII at the moment for it to arrive.
Really looking forward to this, currently playing through the new demo as the dancer and I have to say that the art style is gorgeous. A brilliant mix of 16 bit sprites and some modern touches, truly one of the best looking games on Switch and it plays excellently too
@Tank207 Exactly. I haven’t gotten far in the demo but it looks like you have to recruit everyone before moving onto anyone’s second chapter. So hopefully after that’s done, they’ll interact. Otherwise the only reason to have them on your team is for combat.
Hmm...To try the demo, or leave myself unspoiled and pick up the full game?
@Tyranexx
I'm going to wait until a day or two before the games release then play the demo. That way I can get a head start on the game since the save data from the demo will transfer over. 3 hour head start sounds pretty good to me!
Can someone please share with me why RPG are so popular? What do you enjoy of the the most? Is there a particular game I should try to get into the RPG world? Not sure what I am missing. This games looks fantastic but I can’t appreciate the turn base fights mechanics in the genre. Thanks!
@Crono1973 I guess the publisher is really confident with their product. There are lots of information and a very generous demo. I’m sure they know there’s much more yet to discover!
On pins and needles I tell you, pins and needles!
Tried the demo. Both demos. Not for me
@wratih9: Definitely not a bad plan!
@Aaron09 That's one of my biggest concerns with this game. I'm just not seeing evidence of party banter so far, and that's a HUGE part of classic JRPGs for me.
I'm looking forward to this, but I'm also waiting for reviews. I'll probably be nabbing it digitally, so it doesn't matter if I miss out on the preorder discount from Amazon.
Didn’t try the demo in the event I pick this up, but it looks so good. I’m just nervous it will fall victim to my time honored tradition of getting super into an RPG, playing it to about 75% completion, then mysteriously losing all interest in it. So baffling. I’ve missed the endings of so many great games.
@Francema I'm not pointing my finger at the publisher. I am pointing it at fans who don't know what's good for themselves. Don't spoil it for yourselves people, have some patience.
@Crono1973 Yeah, I agree with your point. I was commenting to the fact that the video is coming from the Developer itself. As a fan, not sure if I was going to watch but also I can asume there will be no spoilers. In fact, this video is not new at all. Came out at the same time as all the other game related info. NL is posting it today beacause reasons.
I could not be more excited for this game
The prologue demo is extremely generous. Probably around 16 hours of gameplay in the demo alone.
@Crono1973 it's just a 30 second TV spot. No details beyond what we already know. Give it a watch, it's quite nice.
@kyleforrester87 I haven't even played the new demo (I played the first one). I remember the days of renting SNES RPG's and not knowing what to expect and being pleasantly surprised occasionally.
I remember the day I rented Final Fantasy 3 on the SNES. I had no idea what to expect, I just knew that it was an RPG like Breath of Fire and Lufia 1. I could see that by looking at the back of the box. It was a 3 day rental period but I returned it right away because I just had to own it and so I went and bought it.
Order of interest, Thief, Hunter, Warrior, the rest.
@Crono1973 yeahh well, the video is basically what they'd show on the back of the box to be fair.
@bimmy-lee I have the same prob it sucks!
I really loved both demos and already pre-ordered the game weeks ago. My only initial concern is the demos didn't show any real interaction among the protagonists. It seems like, when you are playing each character's story, the other characters are just along for the ride.
I am really hoping that impression is wrong, and as you get further into the story they start interacting properly as their stories intertwine. Not just the stock text I saw when I started as the Hunter and she recruited the thief.
Still, I imagine, from what I have seen, that the individual stories are going to be quite good. I just hope these are 8 related and connected stories, not 8 totally random stories thrown into 1 game.
@Francema Fans of RPGs are generally fans of the stories along with the gameplay. This style of turn based gamedplay is more tactical and less reaction based than fast paced real time games like Bayonetta for example. It's well suited to players, not unlike myself, who don't want to be rushed but prefer to enjoy the ride. A good RPG, like Xenoblade Chronicles (though that one isn't turn based, but cool-down based) feels like going on an epic adventure, like watching and entire anime from start to finish, or going through the entire Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings series. Not just book 1. For me, the best are the games that really focus on the characters. If by the end of the story I feel like I know these characters as genuine people, man, that is the best! It gets me invested so much more in the outcome of this otherwise meaningless fictional world and story.
That's my take on it, anyway. Some good RPGs to consider are Xenoblade Chronicles, (or XC2), Almost any Final Fantasy, or Fire Emblem(GBA), Fire Emblem Awakening, or Chrono Trigger - but be careful with that one, I have heard there are some wonky ports.
@Heavyarms55 Thank you! I’ll try one of those in the future and will try to experience it with all this in mind. Xenoblades looks amazing. I am not familiarized with its gameplay. The rest of course that I can recognize as great games out of my zone of interest. As you said these have very complex background stories and I felt like I am always missing the begging of all. Maybe that’s why I am too into Zelda’s games. I know them since day one. With these is like getting late to the party. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!!
@Draxa - I’m not alone! It’s such an annoying trait. I don’t have focus or concentration issues, I just simply stop playing.
I tried the demo, but I couldn't get along with the dialog style, found it a bit tricky to enjoy.
Played the demo and don't much like it. Poor graphic style and to much dialogue.
Me and H'aanit on it. Been looking forward to this game FOREVER.
