News surfacing about Paramount Pictures’ Sonic The Hedgehog movie continues to shock and surprise, with the latest development being the Canadian-American actor and comedian, Jim Carrey, is allegedly in talks to take on the role of Sonic’s arch-nemesis, Dr. Robotnik.
According to Deadline Hollywood, Carrey's villainous character would be fittingly hell-bent on achieving world domination. Sonic, along with the help of James Marsden, are presumably out to stop him. It’s also been noted by a writer from Hollywood Reporter that Carrey would be a live-action person in the film, not just voicing the evildoer.
Compared to a recent description of the blue blur’s personality, this latest update about the upcoming live action and computer animation hybrid film sounds a bit more promising. The 56-year-old actor has already played a number of borderline psychotic characters over the years - starring in the 1994 film, The Mask, and taking on the role of The Riddler in Batman Forever in 1995 - making this seem like an appropriate casting choice.
How do you feel about the possibility of Jim Carrey starring in the Sonic movie? Do you think Doctor Eggman being cast as an actual person rather than an animated character will work? Tell us below.

...Fine by me. Even though the movie will probably still suck. lol
This movie’s production has been peculiar since the beginning.
I'm excited for the miserable forced acting in this movie!
Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik? I don't see how that would work but then again they did manage to get Tim Allen as Santa Claus back then so good luck.

If he is as expensive as he used to be they won't have money for anything else!
The downward spiral continues for the Sonic movie’s quality, ain’t it?
I’ll be curious to see his look
@UmbreonsPapa Seconded. Was actually talking about that with someone earlier today.
What kind of budget is this movie working with? I didn't expect A-listers getting signed on. I was sure this movie was going to be hot garbage, but perhaps I was wrong to judge it so prematurely.
wasn't he being a little crazy recently?
Right. Because everybody loved Batman Forever, right?
How's Alicia Silverstone doing these days?
EDIT: Whoops, my bad. I was thinking of Batman and Robin. Still a stinker though. =P
The Mask of Robotnik !
@JTMnM He's hardly an A-lister anymore. I suggest still planning for a flop.
@fiben1002 Whatever he is, it's a little silly to assume he'd come cheap, no? My point there was about this project's seemingly high budget. That took me by surprise. At the very least, this presents a potential for it to be something decent.
Yes
I'm not sure he's on board for that kind of project anymore.
It probably won’t work... It will be interesting to see what a stinker this movie will become.
I hope he goes for a moody, dramatic performance just to confuse people.
@BensonUii : I stand corrected. Both films look rubbish though.
@fiben1002 He might not be an A-Lister in the sense that he’s in the limelight 24/7 or has a movie every year. But he’s still a big name that, as @JTMnM pointed out, you weren’t expecting to be in this movie.
@Silly_G Both still found plenty of work after their respective Batman movies.
Let me also say while Batman Forever was the beginning of the end for that particular series of movies, it’s miles better than what came directly after. It’s not a great movie looking back. But It isn’t necessarily bad. It was just starting to skew way too much into camp and Val Kilmer was not that great as Batman/Bruce Wayne. Jim Carey, as the Riddler is the highlight of the movie. In my opinion.
I think Jack Black would be better for the role.
We're back to calling him Robotnik now?
@UmbreonsPapa : Alicia Silverstone's career (at least as an A-lister) came to an end after Batman and Robin. She hasn't been able to shed that "valley girl" imagine post-Clueless, and without any serious major roles to shed that image, she has been more or less typecast in that same sort of, like, vacuous role. twiddles hair
I like the woman, but she lacks versatility. She did score a role recently as the mum in one of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid films, but it's a far cry from her days as either the star or a support in a major ensemble piece. I'm sure that she will continue to find work in the years to come as she does possess an endearing persona, but I strongly doubt that she will ever feature in a major production again.
Too bad the once great Jim Carrey has gone of the deep end and is now a complete nut job.
@Yosheel he’s not crazy, a little fed up with the way our society is maybe, but what he talks about is not so well known over here, he talks of buddhist philosophy and kundalini energy which you can experience if you practice. It’s not widely known over here and can sound crazy if you have no idea about what he is talking about.
@freaksloan what you don’t understand can sound crazy..
Well at least he has the height and legs for it I guess lol.
You could have Jim Carrey as Dr Kintobor, before he became Dr Robotnik.
Which live action movie seems weirder so far: Sonic the Hedgehog or Detective Pikachu??
@MH4 Both
@Silly_G A quick Google search will show that she’s actually made an effort to branch out over the years. She’s been active in theater as well since Batman and Robin and if I recall correctly, is currently in a television series. Many actors would probably love to have her consistency in the work she’s done (regardless of whether you or I think any of it is good or bad). Ultimately, I won’t proceed to know how she feels about the trajectory of her career. I do think we as an audience need to get over this idea that just because every movie an actor/actress stars in isn’t an $100 million grossing blockbuster or every show they do doesn’t go for 10+ seasons as a dud of a career.
Despite whether this movie will be good or bad, he makes a good choice for Eggman imo.
I can already see him recycling his Riddler performance from Batman Forever to play Dr. Robotnik/Eggman. All of the characters he's played have very similar mannerisms.
I don't think he's the right one. Sure he's played some interesting villains before, like Riddler, The Grinch and the surprisingly chilling Cable Guy, but I don't think he's right for Robotnik. He mostly has a sort of...set stage personality people relate him with.
@Silly_G Not saying they are good, but have you actually even watched the movies you are trashing?
@UmbreonsPapa
Heh. ^^´ I enjoy campy Batman. (Didn't like the one with Mr. Freeze) Its leagues better then the idiot who is butchering him on the silver screen now, by making him a rude, grumpy, moron. I think the Dark Knight was probably the last good movie with Bats in it. BM vs. SM suuuucked and I wasn't impressed with him in SS or JL.
@Randomname19
Noo. Sorry, but I can't stand him.
@asmi8803 I just kinda remember him disowning some of his older roles/movies because he didn't want to be any kind of bad influence.
Or something like that.
@Malcrash
Par for the course movie wise and Sonic.
Well it's a no watch for me. I will not support anything he is involved in. He is arrogant and self absorbed.
@Malcrash
A live-action Sonic movie sounds stupid right from the outset. Jim Carrey could only be a boon to this disaster of an idea.
For all us 90s kid, Jim Carey was pretty much our third dad or maybe crazy uncle. Second was Robin Williams.
I can say with confidence that I had zero interest in a Sonic movie, but if Carey is cast in the role, I'll watch it.
He seems perfect for the role, though I’d be surprised if he takes it. I feel like every character he’s ever played has been borderline psychotic. It’s fun to laugh sarcastically at what we used to laugh at, but comedy is brilliance, and he’s a smart guy. Not sure if he’s an “A lister” (stupid term) by virtue of what he demands in payment, but he’s definitely an “A lister” in terms of convincing him to do a movie. He had a cool role in a seriously messed up/good movie last year called Bad Batch. Not sure I would have known it was him if Netflix didn’t spoil it in the description. If you’ve seen Man on the Moon, or the Netflix documentary, it’s obvious the guy is brilliant.
I could see this actually working with him playing that part
I dunno, having Jim Carey in a movie that will probably be marketed towards kids may not be a good idea. 20 years ago, it would have been perfect, not so much these days though.
I mean if anybody could do it, it would be him but I'm pretty sure this is one of the signs of the apocalypse
Pretty much the kiss of death, to be honest.
I'll wait and see, but this doesn't seem promising.
Unless Carrey does an amazing job, if the direction leaves a lacking presentation that Mike Pollak could have easily nailed than the director's lack of understanding of the audience is going to be seen in a lot of other decisions in the movie.
B-E-A-utiful...
@Jack_Goetz would be nice.
Actually, Julian Kintobor, the overlander.
I dunno about this. If and I mean big IF this movie happens, I can't see Jim Carey doing this. They should just stick to animation.
Well, he'd have to wear a fat suit, a bald cap, and a fake mustache; but I could see it working.
Excellent choice in my opinion. Love me some Jim Carrey! I have a feeling he will do Dr. Robotnik proud.
I'm sure Jim Carrey will play the part well, but the movie itself sounds painful. They only make these crappy hybrid movies to turn a profit, with zero respect for the source material.
No one has mentioned his character in Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events? Or to lesser extent The Number 23... He has certainly played devious roles well before. Could be interesting to watch if true.
