The GameCube controller is still considered by many diehard Super Smash Bros. fans as the best way to play the game. Since debuting alongside Super Smash Bros. Melee, Nintendo has been able to make it compatible with Brawl for Wii, and also the Wii U entry in the series.
Now, the latest Nintendo Direct presentation has confirmed the controller will also be compatible with Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on the Switch. Given the popularity of it, this announcement isn't all that surprising. It was also somewhat expected when taking into consideration the update the Switch received a while back, making the Wii U adapter compatible with the system and allowing GameCube controllers to be used in titles like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
Are you happy to hear the GameCube controller is compatible with the latest entry in the Smash series? Tell us below.

I wish we could also use it to play actual Gamecube games on Switch.
Expected, but cool nonetheless.
Was there ever any doubt?
Even though is hasn't been said clearly yet, I'm hoping we get a re-release of the controllers, most likely in the style shown in the image of the article.
@Deku-Scrub I'd love a GCN Switch Pro controller. So GCN shaped, wireless, analogue triggers, two shoulder buttons and the addition of home/screen capture buttons. Then we could stop keep our GCN controllers around, and be able to use it for other games.
@roadrunner343 I'd agree, but they'd have to maintain the exact same feel of the current GCN controllers though in the process, which could be tricky
@Deku-Scrub I'd settle for a slightly modified/different version, but if we are truly concerned about the ultra competitive melee players (Extreme minority, I assume) then I would think they could keep the exact same shape/layout by simply adding another Z trigger. Home/Screenshot/+/- is easy enough to squeeze in the center.
Personally, I'd rather see them slightly redesign the shoulder buttons/triggers to make them slightly more comfortable for non-smash games, but that's just me. I gave up on competitive smash years ago =P
Oh boy, this will go great with the Gamecube games we won't get! Ha!
In all seriousness, though, I'm holding out hope. Switch doesn't need a VC service for Gamecube games to pop up. They could do a limited run of Gamecube Selects, which would be a day one purchase for me!
Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to watch the Daemon X Machina trailer again. Best game of the entire Direct!
Now if only they'd let us use our WiiU pro controllers like the gamecube shaped ones. Also, bluetooth headphones/headsets...
@Deku-Scrub I'm hoping they'll have a re-release of the controllers too. It's likely they'll re-release the controller adapters too as the official ones for Wii U seem quite expensive.
the perfect controller.
I STILL don't have one of those adapters lol
Cool but the new logo looks boring as heck compare to the first Super Smash Bros. GameCube controller they had for Wii & Wii U.
Why make it wired? How annoying. I know they want to make it backwards compatible with the actual console but it's just annoying for people who have no need to buy one for competitive play on Melee
would buy one to see why its so prefered ....if they still actually sold them
Nice nice. Now let's take advantage of that compatibility and bring in some GameCube titles to Switch as well!
I wish I could get a Pro Controller with an octagonal gate like on the GC Controller and Wii Classic Controller. I don't wanna give up my wireless controller, but man is it a lot easier to put those Farore's Winds RIGHT on the spot with an octo-gate. I'll get used to it though, I played plenty on the 3DS with the sliding Circle Pad.
