After plenty of teasing and hinting, developer GalaxyTrail has confirmed 2D side-scrolling platformer Freedom Planet is gearing up to make the leap from Wii U to Nintendo Switch in time for the autumn/fall. The studio has teamed up with publisher XSEED to make the Switch-based magic happen.
With two playable characters (plus an unlockable third) and an awesome anime-esque visual style, Freedom Planet still looks and plays like a platforming gem so we're looking forward to seeing it get another shot at stardom on a Nintendo console. It'll also be playable on Switch at E3 if you happen to be making it to the big show this year.
Did you play Freedom Planet on Wii U (or, dare we say it, another platform)? Will it make a good fit for Nintendo Switch? Let us know in the comments below...

Yeah, but what about Freedom Planet 2? That's something I'd imagine people also want when that gets released.
@EvilLucario This port is done by another company Freedom planet 2 is still coming.
i should have gotten this on Wii U, played the Nindies E3 Demo on my Wii U, loved what i played so far. now that it's coming to switch. i'll reconsider that version instead.
My OCD makes me hate the trailer. COLLECT THE CRYSTALS DAMN IT!
Yay another game I bought moons ago on Wii U.
This is what Sonic needs to be , Sonic Mania is the best current Sonic game .
After getting Sonic Mania this game is very whatever for me. I still got it on my Wii U, no need to double dip on this one.
I got this on Wii U as part of a Humble Bundle a few years ago and it frankly couldn’t hold my interest. And at this point there’s just so much to play and so much in my backlog that I don’t dare buy it again.
best game on the wii u e shop!
@bezerker99 don't buy then. Nobody is forcing you to get the game
They might as well just call the Switch the Wii U Version 2.0 since it seems every Wii U game is being ported to it.
Yet another game I have on Wii U being ported.
Honestly frustrating for me. Cause I'm pretty sure the DLC won't ever have a Wii U release.
Sweet, I've been meaning to play this for ages.
I have it on Steam and I can play that whenever, but if I don't play it before it launches on Switch I may get it on there.
@Tasuki this is on PC, Linux, PS4, and Wii U. It’s not a port of a Wii U game, heck it came out on PC first so it’d be slightly more accurate to call this a port of a PC game.
Not gonna double dip on this but cool, hopefully some people who haven’t played it will get to. Heck, now I wish I had it on Switch for the portability, just not enough to pay for it twice.
They waited till E3 week to announce this nonsense - what for. More old retro crap.
God forbid the Switch get the new FATE/Extella game. Why release Fate/Extella: The Umbral Star on Switch if just going to leave them hanging.
Sonic old news. Nothing new and exciting for the console. Sad.
More Wii U crap.
Man, this is the most depressing comment section I've seen in a while. And I was here during the Wii U days!
Good idea of a game, never pulled me in as much as Sonic but the no touch damage feature legit made the game 100 times more fun than Sonic clones. Same with Spark the Electric Jester. I did really enjoy the sequels test demo on PC, so that's the one I'll be waiting for.
Cool! Good game!!
So many ports! But why play them when there are so many new games to play anyway?
Goody, I always wanted to play this, but never did...
@LegendOfPokemon I dunno, but if you never played it the first time around, it’s great!
I will be gladly double dipping for this game.
Hopefully Freedom Planet 2 is right behind it
I hear the Planet grants Freedom to unprofessional voice acting! 🤔 (Joking aside, only one of the guys’s performance strikes me as terrible-and-not-in-a-fun-way.) I think I’ll pick this up because I no longer have easy access to my Wii U.
I got this on Wii U through Humble Bundle. It's not my type of game, but I still enjoyed it.
Got this on Wii U and will be getting it on Switch, hopefully that will get Freedom Planet 2 for Switch as well.
I have to wait till Autumn?! Ugh.
I really liked this game on Wii U, probably the only game I would double dip for from Wii U. Er... besides Bayonetta.
@8-Bit_Superman Just so you know the game has a Classic Mode that removes all the cutscenes.
@MagicEmperor It was a first gig for most of the VAs. Though most of those guys went on to have big careers. Sean Chiplock for instance voices Nintendo games now and Dawn Bennet voices a lot of roles for Funimation.
@Seraphna That’s cool! I was just ribbing. Though one voice in particular sounds out of place and off, IMO. Because I don’t recall the character’s name let alone the VA, I won’t single ‘em out!
If it isn't a physical i couldn't care less. It's a great game but it was an even better game when it came out three years ago.
HOW ORIGINAL
Joking aside, I have little interest in Sonic, let alone Sonic-inspired fan games.
The original nindie demo really caught my eye and immediately bought it on PC and was completely hooked. Fun gameplay, cheesy yet charming characters and story and amazing soundtrack and visuals that were a hallback to the arcadey retro games of the past. Finished it in a few days and played through again. Bought again on Wii U release and played through. Will definitely buy again. My only disappointment is that a Vita version never came out as would have loved using its d-pad. But at least have an 8bitdo SNES pad.
I do hope XSEED consider a physical release in the future.
