It's been 20 years since the original Guilty Gear debuted on PlayStation way back in 1998, so to celebrate, Arc System Works will be porting it to Nintendo Switch. Yup, a game that's been resigned to Sony platforms (and naughty emulators) is finally coming to Nintendo, and we couldn't be more excited.
The original game was a landmark in 2D fighting games, with a combat model that took notes from the success of Street Fighter while offering a fast and frantic action that set itself apart from both Capcom and SNK's offerings back in the late '90s. The announcement was made during a livestream celebrating the series' 20th anniversary, which you can check out below.
No word on when the game will be arriving, but considering the year, we imagine we'll be bringing heaven, hell and plenty of rock to Switch before 2018 is out. Be sure to share your thoughts on the news with us below...

... day 1! Don't even know how much a CIB PSX copy goes nowadays, but this is surely a sweet deal.
"Naughty Emulators"
But emulation done correctly is legal.
I absolutely knew this would happen. This will be a day one purchase for me and I can't wait for some tough battles against Justice.
.................................................................I have no words.
Thank you ASW xxx
What a retro fighting haven the Switch is. All the Neo Geo fighters under the sun almost, a Street Fighter collection and new version of II, now this.
Say Namco, how about some classic collections of Tekken and Soul Caliber?
Wow!
I have the Guilty Gear game which hit the Dreamcast but never had the PSone game.
Let’s Rock!!
Such awesomeness, this is the one I miss since I don't have a freaking PS1 at the time. My knowledge of Guilty Gear starts with X and onwards but I also love to have play the original.
I don't NEED to add more 2D fighting game ports to my Switch, but I've got a soft spot for Guilty Gear.
Yeeeees!!!!!! This makes me happy!
@Menchi187
Exactly. If it's your own personal ISO rip, emulation is fine.
There's also the matter of people illegally selling other people's emulators (coughcoughretron5coughcough) but that's a whole 'nother ball of phlegm.
@Desrever Of course you NEED it! We all NEED it! We also need those other games @Angelic_Lapras_King mentioned. Let's all be needy together.
@Huracan
Never played this.... excited to try though!
Hurrah, this is a great game, before the layers of complex mechanics were added to later versions that made the game impenetrable. I'll definitely pick this one up.
Nintendo definitely needs to bring out an official d-Pad controller though.
There goes another planned Vita purchase of mine, although I still salute it for PS1 support and the regional eShop for actually damn featuring the game in question. But I never dreamed the original Guilty Gear would be an opportunity to buy and play right on Switch... and it's not an opportunity I intend to miss.
No release date, but the announcement alone stacks up to start making this quite a year for fighting games on Switch, too. BlazBlue crossover, Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus R, Blade Strangers, the new Smash Bros and now this - all on top of the continuous influx of Neo-Geo fighters. Then again, this is one of the genres arguably most synonymous with local multiplayer - and Switch has revitalized that concept quite a bit.
@Menchi187 and the content it's used to correctly emulate usually isn't.
@nhSnork Which makes the person bad, not the emulator.
@Menchi187 it makes the act bad, to be precise, but yes. Emulators themselves are just programs, and nowadays they're used in official capacity as well, so to speak.
Yes!I want this
@Menchi187 I never have and never will have an issue with emulators or roms, the devs made more than enough money off these titles back in their hayday and naything on those old systems is fair game today.
No thanks. I'll just pick up XX Reload or whatever it's called when that comes out.
Never had the chance to play the first one till now, awesome~
Too little, too late, already have it on my Vita.

@Steevil
That's interesting to hear. I got a Guilty Gear (and BlazBlue) game once as I loved the look of it, and being a fan of old 2D fighting games from the 16-bit era, I thought this would be similar. But while I was in the tutorial mode, learning about like 12 different types of blocking systems and having to remember ridiculously long strings of combos, I thought to myself, "This is everything that's wrong with modern fighting games. This is why it's a niche genre now". It's interesting to hear that it was once accessible to everyone and not just e-sports players.
Day freaking one. Absolutely loved this back in the day. This, GT, MGS and Tekken 2 & 3 were all I cared about for about a year after i got a psone.
@SmaMan you'd need your own BIOS as well, which nearly no one does
I have this on my PSP, but I’m very tempted to get it again
@Jayvir
The latest version of ePSXe works okay with its own BIOS simulation. The games don't work 100% this way though.
Random PS1 port? Ya know. I don't mind. Let's get more retro ports. I am totally cool with that! I hope it becomes a trend!
Yo. Can we get that Fist of the North Star game next?
Guilty Gear 1 on Switch, because they're not through dodging the question on getting Xrd on Switch yet. At this rate we'll have X, Isuka, Overture and even X Advance on Switch before we ever see Xrd.
yeees! This is the only Guilty Gear I like. Switch is becaming sweet!
Day one for me. This is GOOD news.
I hope this means other Guilty Gear games will be ported as well!
