Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is already a staggeringly expansive game on its own—made even more so by the new game plus mode added last month—but Monolith has been progressively adding even more content to the game through DLC releases. These additions have largely been superficial, mostly Blades and items and such, but an upcoming update will be adding in a new chapter that adds new story content. Though the update still isn’t out yet, dataminers claim that they’ve found information in the most recent patch which leaks details of the forthcoming extra chapter.
Apparently, the chapter will take place during the Aegis War—before the events of the game—and will be tossing the Driver-Blade mechanic form the core game. Instead, you’ll directly control characters like Mythra, Addam, and Lora, all of which will have seven arts. Blade data for Jin, Haze, Malos has also been spotted, suggesting that you can obtain them. Also, Shulk and Fiora will apparently be Blades as well, and Shulk of course says “I’m really feeling it”. Now, none of this is official yet, but it certainly should lead to some interesting revelations if the datamine is accurate.
What do you think? Have you bought the Season Pass for this? Do you think the leak is accurate? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

I still haven't finished the game yet (Still at the Beginning part).
Still focused on other Switch games and other Nintendo backlogs.
Oh sure, because THAT'S CANON!
Honestly I'm actually excited for this...but I want to finish XC1 again before replaying XC2.
Yeah, and this is pretty damn exciting. Though also this is late, it's a few days old by this point.
In addition to the story DLC datamines, there have also been datamines regarding even stronger superbosses. There's a boss with apparently 37m HP at level 150 within the Challenge Mode. Wew. For comparison, the current strongest superboss, Tyrannotitan Kurodil, is level 130 with around ~15m HP. And the final boss has 3m HP for another comparison.
Yeah, the DLC is looking more and more promising as we're learning more about it.
That sounds interesting. Hopefully it will be in a new environment with an actual story.
Story heavy DLC like Frozen Wilds and Curse of the Pharaohs are what Ill pay for (care less about hord more or random armor skins)... Looks like heading in a good direction.
If true, this would be fab. Hoping for a reveal at e3!
But i mean how does Shulk being a blade make any sense whatsoever
I'd love it to be true but sounds a bit wish-fulfilment to me. I doubt there's anything to datamine and it'll all come down in a future update.
Meanwhile I'm still waiting on a discount so I can get the game
I don't like Xeno2. Like, at all. It sucks.
But this seems neat, honestly.
So excited for this. I hope it ties the mystery character in the end of wii u xenoblade. That would be a nice tie together.
Actually sounds pretty cool if true. I'm glad they're making a lot of positive changes to Xeno 2 through DLC. Shame they won't patch up the plot holes in the story, but that's forgivable if they keep making the game more fun/accessible.
If anything I suspect that the Shulk and Fiora are actually leftovers from development. Or they are being included as non canon DLC fun like the Torna blades in NG+.
I'd love to see a DLC chapter built around the Aegis War - but I wont plan on this being accurate until we get some official word. Depending on the nature of the datamine, they could have found cut content from early in development that was never fully deleted, rather than bits and pieces of the new DLC.
@Mew Get over yourself "I don't like it" =/= "it sucks".
A lot of people love the game, and is evidence by its overwhelming positive reviews by almost all reputable sources.
You are entitled to not like something, but you not liking it doesn't make it bad.
Hmmm...might change my mind on the DLC. I was originally certain I wouldn't buy it; it's a pretty steep price for not much content. I guess I'll have to see how much this adds to the game once it comes out.
Most of the other bits of the DLC would just affect a New Game +, and while I loved the game, restarting (mostly) from the beginning isn't terribly appealing given the game's length. Maybe a couple years down the road I'll get nostalgic and run through it again.
@R_Champ I've been playing through the game multiple times to really analyze everything (including the gameplay) and I haven't found very much plot holes in the story. Nearly everything is explained/inferred in some fashion, and there's very little contraditions with each other. May I ask what those were?
If you want to talk about contrived plot devices though, you might have a point since there are some iffy ones that needed to be forced out of the story. Looking at you, Obrona and Haze. Some other story stuff is also pretty sloppily told. But contrived plot devices =/= plot hole. Contrived plot devices are more like something like Obrona's cutting off the ether flow that is super overpowered (which is why they kill her off very early), though one could argue that isn't so contrived and more "just really powerful", considering the stuff Blades can do. Plot holes are more "this event happened but contradicts past established information", and there's really very little to none of that in the game.
Personally though, at the end of the day, as long as the plot hole isn't super out-there I can live with it. There's plot holes and some form of bad writing in quite a few other popular stuff and while it's annoying, I can overlook it if it's not super distractingly bad or detrimental to the story.
@TossedLlama , im afraid you have to wait the next rumored Monolith work .....
Shulk alone has me excited for the season pass, but the story dlc sounds way more interesting than the Zelda DLC
I’m tired of hearing about data mining. Why can’t we just wait for companies to released their content? Being the “first” to reveal the content is pretty self-righteous and is probably the only thing going for these losers in life. I remember the first time I heard about data mining was when Pokémon X&Y were spoiled with Pokémon leaks just a short time away from the actual release date. Pretty annoying stuff and I hope that these companies are able to track these people down and prosecute them.
@Mew I’m sorry you have poor taste. 😜
I’m really feeling it!
I expected something minor and negligible. Ha, I like pleasant surprises.
Hoping it's true, though I also kinda wanted some story regarding what happened after the ending of the game... Maybe playing as Lora would be amazing though.
That sounds awesome!
I honestly wasn't expecting much from this, but wow. That's the best possible DLC I could have hoped for
@NIN10DOXD I just like good games.
@Heavyarms55 I didn't say that it's objectively bad or anything lol
@Anti-Matter Bro you gotta play BOTW and Xenoblade. You will love them. I know they can be tough but, you gotta persevere. You play Portal Knights, you can handle Zelda.
I was willing to believe this until they mentioned Shulk and Fiora being blades. Way too farfetched.
I held off on playing Xeno2 for a long while until I was really ready to be dedicated to it. I was Really bummed that it wasnt a sequel to the WiiU game Chronicles X which I really liked. However, Im enjoying this one now but have been very reserved about the notion of purchasing the pricey DLC. This may tip me in the direction of purchasing.
Has anyone purchased the DLC already? I just left Umon's shipyard and got swallowed by a titan {Uraya?}, still dont understand the combo chains whatsoever, and would like to know if any of the DLC is useful early in the game, all of it at the end of the game maybe, or only for new game+ like someone said???
i really enjoyed the game, but im not buying extra content for the game, i had a blast with it, took me around 90hrs to finish it doing a lot of side stuff, but i felt the game length was about perfect to step away from.
@ouroborous The items you get from the Season Pass are VERY helpful for any part of the game.
As for Blade Combos, you start by using a Special, then you choose the next step with a higher leveled Special in the available elements. For example, say you started with a Fire Special. Now, you can choose to do either a level 2+ Fire or Water Special. Then they diverge again. If you picked Fire, you can do either a level 3-4 Fire or Light Special to finish the combo for MASSIVE damage. If you picked Water, you can do either a level 3-4 Fire or Ice Special to finish the combo.
If you started with an Earth element, you can pick Fire or Earth. From Fire, you can pick Earth or Wind. From Earth, you can pick Electric.
Etc.
You're in Chapter 3 so you'll get Chain Attacks soon, but combat can be described like this:
Autoattacks fuel Arts, which fuel Specials, which fuel Blade Combos, which fuels the Chain Attack, which fuels the Full Burst.
Make sure you learn and practice Blade Combos, because they are the most important thing to learn in this game. I've seen some people fall into the trap of not really wrapping their head around the mechanics then call the combat "slow and tedious" because they don't know how to pull off Blade Combos.
@EvilLucario Thanks.
The thing I dont understand is when the attack/chain tree appears in the top right corner of the screen after you do a Blade Art with Pyra, it shows like if you do another attack of a certain type, it will go up the tree toward sealing something or whatever? But I dont know how to select or activate the next attack, I assume you're supposed to do that before the meter runs out (top right but to the left of the chain attack tree).
But maybe like you said, I'll find out more about it soon.
I've tried switching blades, to maybe use another element in the chain? But neither that nor activating the attacks of anyone else in my party (who might have a different element of attack) seems to count towards advancing the attack chain. It always just stays on the first icon. Tho I swear it moved up the chain once...
Okay I watched a video of Alex's which explained it a little bit, apparently the blade icon goes from level 1 to level 2 etc, ive never seen it do that, but maybe i just have to let it keep charging. So Im starting to get an idea about this now.
@TossedLlama Don’t forget me!
@ouroborous The game tells you in the tutorials about that, and you see it after seeing performing the second step of a Blade Combo, and what me and Alex described is how they work. But yes. Learn it NOW before you progress through the game.
I've been disappointed with the DLC so far. Hardly seems worth half the base game's price.
Sounds exciting! Personally I missed having the arts pallet and didn't enjoy being restricted to 3 arts at time with a "cool down" period if you switch to another Blade. Looking forward to this!
Wait, are Datamines always accurate or something?
@Petraplexity Lmao okay dude
Loved the game, had troubles getting into the first xc, but I didn't have nearly as much trouble on this one. I still have it on my 3DS, but graphically harder to get into. I never picked up xcx on wiiu either so wouldn't mind seeing that bumped to switch to play since I thought it looked really good. Still undecided on playing through the extra DLC content, probably wait to see how long it is, and whether i'm playing other stuff when it comes out.
@Galenmereth I've beaten the main story and I'm still not sure how they would tie in.
