Castle of Heart, that hard as nails platformer that slashed and hacked its way onto the Switch eShop earlier this year, has just received a substantial new update - one that addresses a number of issues players - including our very own Damien McFerran in his review - have raised with its developer.
As you can see from the patch notes below, 7Levels has made a lot of changes post launch, including adjusting combat, general character animations, balancing issues and more. The game certainly won't be any easier, but there's a chance it won't be punishing for all the wrong reasons:
- In-game tutorial – several things were designed from scratch, while others were remodeled. It will help you understand better the core gameplay mechanics, like leveling up and the use of power-ups
- Character’s animations – better control over the main character was our main goal. In order to achieve it, we have polished some animations. The result is that our knight reacts immediately to you want him to do (like jumping, punching, shooting, picking up weapons and so on)
- Combat – we received a lot of feedback on that, so we have focused on improving it, especially on polishing the blocking mechanics
- Second weapon – by popular demand, we have added indicators informing you about the second weapon’s power. A small, yet an important change
- Easy Mode – we have heard your comments loud and clear and we reckon that the game might be a bit too challenging at times. This mode was added for the gamers that simply enjoy exploring the game’s world
- Balance – we have improved this feature and we hope you will notice it
- Bugs – we fixed the ones that we could find, so they shouldn’t distract you any more
Have you been playing Castle of Heart? Have you already played the game post-update? We'd love to hear your thoughts right here on NintendoLife.com...

Wulverblade has also received a pretty big update, adding an easy mode with checkpoints before the bosses, beast mode (not sure what this adds, the description doesn't make it sound like a new difficulty) as well as graphical and framerate improvements and faster load times. Pretty much fixed everything that was wrong with an otherwise excellent game. It's on sale on the Eshop at the moment.and if you enjoy beat 'em ups I highly recommend it.
As for Castle of Heart , it seems like the same can be said on that they've fixed what was wrong with the original release. I haven't bought it and I'm still not sure I will. It is on my wishlist though and if I see it on sale I will consider it.
Might have to consider this one now....
Is this game good? Like Code of Princess good?
I did like the look of this before it was released, so I'm interested in hearing some feedback on the patch.
It’s on sale in NA so maybe I’ll give it another look...
I really am interested in this game, but I look for the words "casual friendly" in write-ups of games at this point in my life, not so much the "hard as nails" notation that this one gets. May consider it if the price hits <$10, but I'm thinking I still have to wait on this for today.
Might fall off the fence now. Really want to love this game!
I will give it a try now. I wanted it but didn't get it because the reviews said the controls were bad. The animations were too slow but if they fixed it then I will finally try it.
Like other have said, I really liked the look of this game but the reviews scared me off buying at launch. With the update and the current 10% off discount I am now likely to add it to my collection.
No stability, no dice. I've grown accustomed to stability updates by Nintendo. So much so that any update without stability will be deemed unacceptable in my eyes😂😂😂
Now it sounds like it should have been at launch However I understand that player feedback is super important also. Glad it´s shaping great, I´ll buy it!
Much respect to the dev, I can tell they really want this game to succeed. Animation was off to from the videos alone... my original complaint. I'll re-backlog it.
Well then...this seems to adresss many of the complaints. I’m weighing a purchase.
First of all, Congrats for the devs because the support they are providing.
But please, Give us a trailer or a video with the changes implemented.
Makes easier consider a buy it after see the changes in action.
Kinda makes me want re-reviews for the updated versions. Nonetheless, very stoked to see a developer going the extra mile, kudos.
@Daftbomb, Agreed I was thinking the same thing after reading this article, it would be awesome if the reviewer here on Nintendolife would do a do over on the review for this title since the developers addressed the issues that had been brought up in the review . I am another one of the ones that the review on this site kept me from purchasing this title on my Switch which I hated because I was really hoping this title turned out good, it looks fantastic and I am going to purchase it now but it would be very noble of Nintendolife to give us an updated review.
Guess I’ll pick this exclusive now
As long as they take away the timed life force draining mechanic I will bite.
A lot of people have complained about "floaty" controls where the main character feels like he's under water while falling. I wonder if this was improved upon....
Good news, I really wanted this game but was put off from the initial reviews and comments.
I just want to chime in here to confirm, like @Fake-E-Lee before me, that having spent several hours playing the updated version, I can gladly say that “Castle of Heart” now consistently delivers the quality experience that I fell in love with while playing the first five stages (i.e. all of Chapter I) upon initial purchase.
@OorWullie, @AJ81, @JJ286, @AcridSkull, @Indienapolis, @bluedogrulez, @Agent721, @FlashBoomerang, @Daftbomb, @Romeo-75, @Flowerlark, @BenGrimm — in short: if you’ve been on the fence, now is the time to invest, especially as a means of reinforcing for developers like @7Levels that there IS both community goodwill and a fiscal return for those who pause to listen to their fans and invest the time and resources needed to calibrate the experience to near-perfection. I can assure all of you that, as someone who posted extensively on the original review page here, practically everything that caused me to give up the game after starting Chapter 2 has been addressed — including a host of quality-of-life improvements that I didn’t even know I wanted, but am thrilled to see in place!
@RagManX I totally understand your thinking, so please let me confirm that the easy mode they've introduced absolutely represents a casual play option. In fact, after playing enough of Normal mode to convince myself I could speak fairly about its adjustments, I personally switched to “easy” because — though I am a “Soulsborne” fan going all the way back to “Demon’s Souls,” an English-supported version of which I imported from Play-Asia before a U.S. edition was even announced — I did not at all approach “Castle of Heart” out of desire for difficulty. Easy mode is a perfect fit for what I personally want from it and I believe you will feel the same.
@chtan69 The life-sapping mechanic is still there, but it has been ratcheted down (“nerfed”) so significantly that it almost might as well not exist. For example, I previously could not pause to look for heart pieces (purple gems) in any stage from 2-2 forward due to this mechanic, but I’ve now had no issue exploring at leisure after clearing enemies from a section where I am convinced that gem has been hidden.
@Diablo2 Yes indeed — while I personally did not mind them, the “floatyness” (also described in several places, errantly I believe, as “input delay”) hasn’t been completely addressed.
^Does anyone know why several of the users I attempted to reply to above did not seem to register properly while others did just fine? Thank you!
@rharalson Thanks for the update. Downloading now....
@rharalson, Thanks for the prompt reply. I am getting ready to purchase Castle of Heart on my Switch and very much looking forward to jumping in. Thanks again for your time and input on this title.
@Shiryu — thank you, so very sincerely, for the effort you made to connect @7Levels to folks here in the Nintendo Life forums back in March. “The proof is in the pudding,” so to speak, as the update they released today is fantastic — and I’m not sure early adopters would have known how to reach them, much less how genuinely open they were to our feedback, without you making the original connection. Thanks again.
@rharalson Thanks for the detailed reply. That makes me want this. Next time I have spare cash, I'll probably pick this up. Appreciate the feedback!
@OorWullie Lesson learned, in future we will do our best to avoid same mistakes.
@whanvee Improvements to overall software stability and other minor adjustments have been made to enhance the user experience:)
@FlashBoomerang Thanks! I'm pretty sure there will be some gameplay videos with changes available shortly, if not.. we will provide one.
@super08mario @diablo2 "Input lag" feeling is reduced and character's animations are polished so knight reacts immediately. We also changed time of some animations. Blocking, shooting, fighting, opening chests, picking up weapon etc. are noticeably faster.
@Fake-E-Lee @rharalson Guys, again, many thanks for all your feedback and effort that helped us to provide this udate. Despite mistakes we made we were warmly welcomed and you gave us push to prepare his patch. It's a great feeling to know that the update met your expectations. Of course our work is not finished yet, we will be around reading all the comments and obviously working on improvements.
@rharalson
Cheers for the response, will download this and Bloodstained when I get back home.
@rharalson My pleasure, all in a day's work.

@7Levels Great job guys! I will definitely consider this game
@7Levels

@OorWullie Jings man! What happened to your avatar?? Oor wullie in space??
@MischiefMaker He levelled up, powered up his bucket and went to where no Scotsman has been before
Wow, I might actually consider this game next time it goes on sale.
@7Levels Just wanted to let you know that I picked up the game and I find it satisfying. Great work!
Bought the game yesterday and it plays really well! Character is responsive, animations are looking good and easy mode is a welcome addition. Great work from the devs.

Sold due to stability!
@7Levels I've been reading some great feedback on the game since the update. I'll be buying it in the next few days. Cheers!
@BenGrimm @super08mario @factoryofdreams @HAL9000 Great! Have fun and of course let us know your thoughts! @Fake-E-Lee I can asure you that we will be listening to players. It's a great feeling to be a part of such community.
Just finished playing some of the game (I didn't play before update so can only compare to written reviews) and can confirm that the knight is responsive in actions, and on easy mode the difficulty is just right. Knight feels durable (though surprisingly nimble for swinging on ropes while being made of rock) and combat is fair.
@7Levels I played through most of the second chapter and it was a noticeable difficulty increase but I like it. You just have to manage your weapons and surroundings to overcome it. With that being said I am happy easy mode is an option so people do not miss this game. The platforming is cool and neat while the combat it is engaging. I'll go through it on normal for the best experience. Thank you for replying to us and I hope you have more luck with this game and in the future.
@super08mario Thanks! We are really happy that after update our game met people expectations. It's possible change difficulty anytime without losing progress from level selection screen but it seems you are doing well on "Normal".
@Fake-E-Lee And it's great to be a part of this community:)
@OorWullie Thanks. Great info.
