Biohazard 7 - known as Resident Evil 7 in the rest of the world - has just been released on Switch in Japan. It's a cloud-based proposition which means you're playing a streamed version of the game from Capcom's servers, rather than running it direct from the console itself.
There's no indication on whether or not Capcom has plans to release the game outside of Japan, but interestingly, it does come with an English language option, buried in its settings:

If you have a Japanese eShop account, then you can give it a try. Have you downloaded the game already? We're in the process of doing that as we speak, but let us know your thoughts by leaving a comment below.

Wish they had just done it properly. Physical cartridge please!
@sandman89 they may have to. From what I’ve seen already it’s basically unplayable(at least over here). Bad connection problems, blurry visuals and delay.
You should remember that the game won't play well outside of Japan. Sure, you can download it, but the servers are so far away that the connection is pretty unstable. Watch GameXplain's video for reference.
@Mr_Pepperami It's not meant to play anywhere else, that's why it's currently a Japan-only release. You can't expect to stream a game from Japan and have it work (and keep in mind that the servers will be more occupied than usual since it's a new release).
It would be impossible to have this game on a switch cart and streaming from England on these servers is pointless
@Mr_Pepperami I wouldn't judge it on people playing in the west.
I seen a video from a gamer in japan and gotta say it's pretty impressive
@Stocksy not sure about that. A switch port with an obvious downgrade maybe under 16GB.
If it isn't then yeah. People are living in a fantasy land if they think the game would come on a 32GB cart.
Pointless anyway as capcom won't port this.
@kobashi100 RE7 is a little over 20GB on PS4. The issue isn't the file size, but I think it's the price of the game card (assuming they can get it to run on the Switch in the first place).
More than likely the English option is to incorporate other Asian territories. Its a pretty common thing to happen these days.
@Octane yeah I meant switch version could be under 16GB with the downgrade. If so then it would definitely come on a 16GB cart. Capcom chose the streaming route though so there is no chance now.
@Mr_Pepperami You mean to tell me that a thoroughly, utterly terrible idea from the very start... actually turned out to be a thoroughly, utterly terrible idea? Gosh, I’m hardly surprised! (Opinion.) Yeah, I also watched some videos and read some accounts. It’s kinda hard to be immersed and scared when the scariest thing is the way the game is distributed...
Edit: I strongly dislike the very notion of cloud-streaming games, but I was also referring to playing a Japanese game with such a distribution from, say, halfway across the globe.
Paying $20 for a game that will inevitably suffer (even if only to a relative degree) from slightly blurry/glitchy video quality at times, some level of input lag most-all of the time, and maybe even being fully disconnected some of the time--and in around half a years time you'll have the game taken away from you entirely--is this a future for gaming that anyone genuinely wants?
Could-streamed games have their place and might even be pretty cool in the future, but this is not their time. The whole tech behind them just isn't good enough for playing most games properly, and this is not the kind of consumer-friendly business model they need/deserve either as far as I'm concerned. And the real irony is that I think OnLive actually got closer to getting it right a few years back than where we are with now with this kind of thing. It was just a little overpriced, imo, and suffered from the same tech issues mentioned above (but you'd think they'd have improved the technical issues at least somewhat by now if they were still going).
In principle it's great that RE7 is coming to Switch, but I am not impressed or happy with what Capcom is doing here.
This reminds me of when I got the online "console" and controller and then the service went down forever a few days later. Good times...
I also got a steamlink and then they announced the new apps that make it redundant. It never worked well anyways. Even with it being in the same network asmy computer.
I just don't think we're there yet with cloud gaming or game streaming tech. Ah well. There will always be some company trying to profit off of our hopes.
I am waiting to hear how well it runs. If it runs well, I will try it out.
@impurekind Here, here!
RE7 weights around 20GB on the PS4. Considering that Switch version would have lower resolution textures, it could easily fit on the 16GB cart. It’s just a lazy port, if you ask me.
Surely could have ported this to switch 720p and 30fps. PS4 version so atmospheric because of the near photorealism at times, with excellent lighting and shadows. Switch version could get close with worse textures.
@Damo
"Have you downloaded the game already? We're in the process of doing that as we speak..."
Does that mean that you're going to review it? I would be fascinated to hear how this holds up against other platforms, and what the performance is like.
@Krzysztof it's not a port. it's the PC version via the cloud.
@Heavyarms55 I tried it this morning and it played smoothly enough. The only issue I had was that the sound was popping in and out constantly...
That and that with only fifteen minutes I could only get into the house and the demo time finished just when I was going upstairs. I didn't have time to try anything... I just wandered around some empty rooms. I would've liked to know how the game run with some action heavy scenes...
I'm not giving Capcom my money for this thing....
@PtM erm no
Physical release only please.
Although doubtful given Capcom’s Over stingey approach in carts selected for their games.
Half release on a cart with huge download for remaining game.
@maruse Yeah, the only way I was gonna pay money for this was if it ran nearly perfect here in Japan. And even then, I own a PS4 too. Thinking some more I decided there is really no reason to get a game on Switch that is also on PS4 if the Switch version cannot take advantage of the hybrid nature of the console. Some people say they don't play the Switch as a portable, but I know I do quite regularly.
This still might be nice for people who don't own a PS4 or Xbone or I think there is a PC version too but I am too lazy to confirm, but otherwise, I really no longer see much point in this type of Switch release.
Thanks for sharing your experience with the demo!
Capcom is trying real hard, people. Give them some credit.
Trying real hard to not do anything that is remotely good for business and/or fans, obviously. I want this game on Switch, I really do, and was really looking forward to see anything about it ever happening. Anything but this. Double dip for a visual downgrade with all of the content? No-brainer. But I'll avoid this at any cost above absolutely free.
@maruse That's a real shame. I hope they consider increasing the demo time if they really expect anyone to buy into this version over there.
Don't get me wrong, I think this is a neat experiment, but I would never want a model like this to ever be used in the future. The whole idea of paying for a game and having it taken away from you after some time leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Cool experiment but it needs some tweaking to be feasible to a guy like me.
@Octane what is the file size on PSVR? I think that version is a better comparison.
No thanks. I tried out On-Live before and I didn't like it. Not a bad concept but it is ultimately too flawed for me to spend any money on.
@Dpullam Exactly, this is the kind of stuff that the anti-digital gamers are always complaining about, but this time it is actually true.
@RailX There's no different version. The PS4 game is just playable in VR.
@Octane oh ok. Everywhere online I read about RE7 on Switch talks about the game being scaled back to run for PSVR, since it is seperate hardware to PS4.
Sorry if I am mistaken, I do not own said hardware, so only go by what I read.
@RailX Well, as expected, the image quality is a little worse in VR, but the resolution doesn't take a hit. Textures seem to be the same as well. I'm not entirely sure what it's doing to downgrade the image quality, but I believe it's all done while it's rendering (less AA applied for instance). There's no separate game file or something like that.
For comparison, the Xbox One version of RE7 is also around 20GB.
@Octane Makes sense. Thanks for having a proper conversation with me about it. Appreciated.
File size isn’t the issue, as much as I love my Switch, and as much as I would support the physical release, the system isn’t capable of running this game without SERIOUS DOWNGRADING THE VISUALS. You guys are asking a Tegra x1 to do what a GTX 1060 equipped core i7 with 16gb of ram can’t handle on max settings... There are some games that should be made for the switch, and some games that the system just can’t handle, and this is one of them. Unfortunately we are gonna have to wait until the next generation of switch hardware releases to get these kind of games on the go (maybe).
Dragonball FighterZ on the other hand should already be out on the switch!!!
