Whatever you think of Nintendo’s latest and wackiest creation, Labo has been pretty indicative of the company's aggressive marketing in the weeks since its brief yet impactful reveal in January.
With a combination of Nintendo’s fitting mantra of ‘thinking outside the box’, utilising the console's many new features and tapping into the universal appeal of creating and customising, Labo looks to be yet another feather in the Switch’s increasingly impressive and diverse cap.
The Switch has been a runaway success, none more so than in Japan, where not only has it been posting record-breaking sales numbers week on week, but Labo itself is having a huge publicity push, the likes not seen since the launch of Super Mario Odyssey last October.
Check out just how crazy things are getting by looking at the images below, then tell us how you're getting on with Labo.

"Japan Goes Absolutely Potty About Nintendo Labo"
Well, Nintendo's marketing has. To me, the title implied some pictures showing sales. Anyway, I'm glad to see this getting a big push. Creativity for all ages should be encouraged, and is something that seems to be frowned upon after a certain age in the West.
they “went potty”
oh you crazy Brits
@RainbowGazelle yeah, that's just bad titling (that even a work? Lol). Misleading.
Was expecting to see thousands of people in stores trying to buy Labo.
It's just displays. We'll find out on Wednesday how it went at least.
@RainbowGazelle I’d say creativity after a certain age is frowned upon even more in Japan than in say the US.
Seriously, I think this whole Labo thing is going to be huge! It's basically the Switch's "Wii Sports" in many ways, and certainly in how it's going to appeal to families and casuals and help sell a crap-load of systems.
Wow !
@impurekind Dunno, I'm still kinda skeptical. It will certainly be remembered, for better or worse. But I'm foreseeing more than a few people having regrets about buying into Labo 6 months from now.
Of course 6 months from now someone could be looking at this very comment and laugh at me. You're welcome, future buddy
@roboshort I have to agree with @RainbowGazelle about the creativy thing.
You are seen in a negative light if your "creativity" doesn't follow everyone elses. Just look at the grade school and middle school system in America (least from my experience).
I don't have anything to say.
Nintendo did said that NX is a console with 'New Experience' and 'New ways to Play'. Back then people assumed it's VR but it's the opposite: instead of putting you inside the game, the game came out into the real world.
@SmaggTheSmug Well, I don't know how long its popularity will last--it's definitely a gimmick product--but I have no personal doubt that while it lasts it is going to be huge and sell a load of Switches..
"Thinking outside the box" -heh, there's something funny about that when it's applied to the thinking behind labo. I can't wait to get mine though anyways 😀
Imagine what new Labo kits are going to be released for Christmas! It is, after all, the PERFECT Christmas gift for kids on Xmas day!
I'm just imagining them constructing some sort of labo kit around the entire Nintendo section that makes it interact with people coming to look at and buy games and accessories. XD
I saw videos of kids with it and they love it.
I'll check it out down the line when they're cheap. Just to satisfy my curiosity
@Meaty-cheeky Thanks for letting us know 😐
Unlike in the West, Nintendo really invests in marketing in Japan. I mean REALLY invests. Like REALLLLLLLLLLLY invests.
Curious in it but not enough to purchase it at this point. Then again, I don’t consider myself part of the target audience. Do wish it the best though.
Its ironic, I consider Nintendo to be on both extremes when it comes to gaming. Some games barely budge from past experiences (although this may be changing) and then they go and produce something completely different from anyone else that bemuses people on addition to intrigues. I guess it plays on curiosity.
Lol at all those unsold Wii U Microphones nestled snugly under the Labo display.
I'm curious about how functional the Labo software is without the cardboard contraptions as I'm more interested in the software itself as opposed to the novelty of the product as a whole.
Ah, yes, such a runaway success that we get photos of shelves clogged with Nintendo Labia kits and not a single shopper browsing them. Meanwhile, over here I haven't yet seen any displays at all.

Didn't really see much of Japan going absolutely potty for Labo in the gallery. More that "Labo is available in stores".
@Heavyarms55 Here in Netherlands it is being marketed pretty strong (at least on television) also. gonna pick up the variety kit for my kids as soon as i am certain i can get a replacement set along with it so that they can both build their own sets. Just to prevent havoc in the house when my six year old breaks the thing my 9 year old created.
I must be one of the very few here... but I totally don't get it why this is a hit at all.. i guess since it's more Kids console so maybe it makes sense, but doesn't do anything for me....
That pun
@Heavyarms55 I would say the street takeover in New York City for the release of Super Mario Odyssey along with a recreation of the dance etc was pretty impressive. They don't bother so much with the UK sadly.
I think the reason we haven’t seen more of the new yoshi game is due to it being tied into Labo in some way. The art style of that game from what I’ve seen matches up perfectly with some kind of Labo crossover
I'm not interested in playing any of it, but absolutely love the idea and especially how they designed the boxes and floor spaces. Labo is going to need a larger area at E3
I'm just curious if we are even going to get sales numbers for this in the video game sales charts as it really is more of a toy than a game. Nintendo itself doesn't even list it as a Switch game, it has it's own separate website.

My Labo experience is a great one! My Variety Kit is super fun, and I can't wait to get the Robot!
I'm really curious about sales figures for the US, though. Doesn't seem that big over here, but the potential for it to be huge is there.
@Eigotaku I don't get it, what's so 'crazy' about some products on shelves in an electronic store?
@BraveBiT Labo was absent from the Nintendo area at Warsaw Good Game expo this weekend, but it's a rather small event. I asked the guys there about it and they said they didn't get enough space for Labo.
People were lining up for Just Dance and ARMS though.
@Shade_Koopa I’m just saying it’s even worse in Japan.
I expected toilets.
@RainbowGazelle
I know, was expecting crazy Black Friday-esque pictures of people climbing over each other to get a Labo. Instead it's just pictures of the inside of a store with no customers in it that could be any store in the world.
Can't wait until Friday. I hope Nintendo can deliver on the day because I'm booked off work...
@dunnyone Then don't post at all.

I wasn't going to invest in Labo, because, you know.... money. But my son has a ton on birthday and holiday money squirreled away, since he is frugal as ****, and he pulled the trigger.
Got the last Variety Kit target had. Seems to be more popular than the Robot suit around here. Decent exposure in the Video Game area and plenty of people checking it out.
I let my kids at it by themselves (11 and 9), and at the current speed, i'd say they'll have a month of building fun before they are even done. So far they build the RC cars and are loving them. Playing with the sensors and the changing the frequency and playing with both cars at once.
Our neighbors came over to check it out. They do a lot of STEM stuff with their kids and they were impressed with it. They are discussing getting a Switch now.
Truth is, I don't see this getting a ton of play long term like something like Mario Kart, but i'm not sure it has to for us to feel we got value out of it. And my 11-year-old is into programming (Minecraft and Unity), so maybe the Garage will give him some fresh ideas.
Either way, we are happy with the purchase and wishing Nintendo all the best.
Reminds me of that Simpsons episode with Gabo the puppet.
LABO! LABO!! LABO!!!!
"With a combination of Nintendo’s fitting mantra of ‘thinking outside the box’... "
More like Nintendo's marketing of wanting you to think outside of the box that you yourself put together...
@dunnyone Don't go there, I'm giving you a last warning.
Labo is like marmite. You either like it or you
I’m confused- where is Nintendo Life’s LABO review??
@HappyMaskedGuy Maybe they're too busy playing with it to write a proper review.
I had a choice between Labo & God of War this weekend. I chose Kratos. I could not justify $70 US for cardboard. Hopefully I can grab it on a Black Friday sale come November.
Here in Indonesia, the price of LABO are pretty expensive.
It cost Approximate IDR 1,850,000 or US$ 132.55 !!
https://drakuli.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=95&product_id=16189
Tax !
I guess i will pending the order until August 2018 until i have adequate budget to buy LABO Variety kit. I switch with Penguin Wars Switch for my shopping day in May 2018.
Dun know, dun care. Still not buying one... la la la la la
Meanwhile the occidental world goes "potty" for a mid-aged bald sweaty wrestler with an axe adventuring with an idiotic kid in a poor written interactive b-movie.
I love japanese much more now.
@CorvoRevo stop being snooty
Interested in seeing the sales numbers, I think it will sell decent on curiousity, but word of mouth seems to be mixed out there, so not sure if it will have staying power. Sounds like especially something like the robot is going to take a ton of patience to complete, which is something the target audience IE kids generally don't have.
Me and the kids are having a blast so far with it!
Should we be concerned by how much is still on the shelves? Because I find it hard to believe Nintendo has finally rectified their stock issues.
I don't have a desire for this game, and surprisingly neither of my sons do either. I'm very surprised that my youngest doesn't want this. He loves to draw, paint, and make crafts. He also loves video games! But when I told him this finally came out on Friday, he said he wasn't interested in buying it.
"Gee look at all these people lined up in front of stores for Labo" - Said no one ever. Future bargain bin trash
Glad Labo is having success, even though at this point its just perceived success since its too early for sales numbers. I'm in my 40's and this just doesn't appeal to me at all, but its not meant to. Labo is something my little nephews will like & I think its cool Nintendo is marketing something to this audience. Kudos!
Built 2 this weekend. The 10-15 minute building walking thing with the legs on it. Super cool, got to play a videogame with my cat. Perfect short burst of build time, really cool reward for building. Then I built the house, and was like wtf. SO limited what that house does. Was expecting some sort of tamagotchi thing. Yanno, feed it everyday to keep alive or something. Something slight to extend replay. Instead, you get some simple mini-games for food that changes the color of it. Minimal interaction with the house itself. Wasn't expecting a whole universe out of it, but even my childhood self, would have been really let down in not being able to do more with it. Might return the unopened Robot Kit and put that 80 bucks toward PS4, unless it reviews well (got 2 weeks for a return). Feels like Kirby all over again, so clever, but so boring.
was the store closed?...
Where are the customers????????
Potty? They used the bathroom?
Wish Nintendo products were that visible here in Norway... Here its usually 1 or 2 display copies and the rest in a storingroom.
Hopefully Labo does well.
nintendo should focus on gaming, making deals with 3th parties.
its already shamefull the specs are already outdates for 3th party products.
i dont know about you guys in north america, but we europeans want to see games, for us this is just overpriced cardboard. wich i can understand in the land of origami will be succesfull.
i like the switch, buti bought it for the historical great games breath of the wild and mario odyssey. but ro be honoust i already see again that familiar decline of the wii-u and gamecube, n64.
Less Labo, more games please!!!!!
these product wont sell well in europe.
it just uses to much space in stores where there
should be laying games.
gamestores here already struggle with space to promote 3 brands, in some cases even 4 systems (3ds,ps4,xbox one,switch)
if labo is not in your local store, thats prob the case.
@FinalFrog
yeah it means.
La boooooschittttt
@PALversusNTSC
We will see European peoples like LABO ideas.
You just don't know yet.
@impurekind
LABO is gimmick ?
But that Gimmick is Fun to do.
Playing the games in same routines over and over again sometimes kinda boring.
Why don't we try Different way to play ?
@Alucard83
The fact that some guy or girl on a message board, with a fictional character made up from a game that's played on a child's toy, and STILL seemingly well invested in a kids hobby makes it seem like you're a bit of a try hard at trying to be edgy and mature. I understand if it isn't for you. Hell, a lot of s*** that people are raving about these days I hardly even care to understand. The fact that you're trying to label a console with all these things with toys those shows that maybe you're on as mature grown up as you think you are. See adults don't really care what other people see it as or go out of their way to place labels. They just do what they want to do and enjoy what they want without any of that.
All these damn things are toys for real. And that's why the majority of people out there that aren't gamers look at folks like yourseld and laugh when you're trying to act like you're more mature because of what toy you picked 😆. As they look at you and see you still playing with toys; no matter how you try to rationalize it. So just embrace it and let it be.
Three local stores I've been to this weekend had all of their Labo in stock still. Not catching on very well in my area apparently.
I think what nintendolife mean is sarcastic potty mean going crazy for something and in these images you can clearly see full shelves and no one going potty!
I believe they are saying it failed in Japan!
